Estimation of Electromechanical Modes of Oscillation in the Eastern Interconnection from Ambient PMU Data

A power system's inter-area electromechanical modes of oscillation determine if the system is small-signal stable. Mode meters are tools that estimate the modes based on ambient synchrophasor measurements, allowing continuous monitoring of the system's stability margin. This paper reports on the application of mode meter algorithms to 21 months of synchrophasor measurements from the United States Eastern Interconnection (EI). Estimates for three modes were updated every minute, providing a much more comprehensive set of results than previous studies based on disturbance recordings. The detailed signal designs and mode meter configurations provided in this paper can be used to accelerate mode meter deployments in the EI. Analysis of the mode estimates reveal for the first time how seasonal load changes and system reconfiguration impact the EI system's dynamics.

Impact of Quaternary-Pumped Storage Hydropower on Frequency Response of U.S. Western Interconnection with High Renewable Penetrations: Preprint

As renewable penetration increases in the United States, maintaining stability and reliability of low-inertia power grid by providing sufficient frequency control capability becomes a challenge. Advanced pumped storage hydro technologies (APSH) will be expected to play an important role for future grid as not only an energy supplier, but also as an ancillary services provider. This paper studies the impact of using quaternary pumped storage hydropower (Q-PSH), as one of the newly proposed APSH technology, to provide primary frequency response. To quantify the impact of Q-PSH on frequency response of the U.S. Western Interconnection, a user-defined dynamic model of Q-PSH is developed on the GE Positive Sequence Load Flow (PSLF) platform and is implemented in a set of detailed U.S. Western Electricity Coordination Council (WECC) planning cases in which renewable penetration levels are 20%, 40%, 60% and 80%. Simulation results show that Q-PSH can help improve frequency nadir and settling frequency comparing to the conventional PSH.

System and method for scalable optical interconnect for quantum computing

The present disclosure relates to an interconnect system for interfacing an electronic subsystem to a qubit package, wherein the qubit package has a plurality of independent qubits. The system makes use of an optical fiber cable having a plurality of optical fibers, which is interfaced to the electronic subsystem. A 3D optical structure is used which has a plurality of internal waveguides, and which is configured to interface the optical fiber cable to the qubit package. The 3D optical structure further has at least one subsystem for using the plurality of waveguides to receive signals of a first type from at least one of the qubits package or the optical fiber cable, to convert the signals from the first type to a second type, and to transmit the signals in the second type to the other one of the fiber optic cable or the qubit package.

Accommodation of Silicon in an Interconnected Copper Network for Robust Li-Ion Storage

Silicon (Si)-based materials are one of the most promising anodes to be applied in rechargeable lithium ion batteries. However, the active Si/electrolyte interface causes continuous side reactions and poor conductivity, which significantly decreases the cycling stability. Cu is the only metallic current collector that has been known to promote electron conduction and lithium-ion transfer without alloying reaction occurrence. However, to the best current knowledge, scalable interface engineering incorporating Cu has not been reported. In this study, this conductive Cu interface (CCI) is constructed through a self-assembly carbothermic reduction method to achieve efficient protection of Si/electrolyte interfaces while allowing for fast Li + diffusion. The energy barrier of lithium-ion diffusion through Cu is calculated to be 0.1965 eV, which is much lower than that through Au, Fe, and Ni films. Benefiting from the enhanced interfacial protection and kinetics of Si with CCI, a fading rate of only 0.068% is maintained for 1000 cycles and an aerial capacity of 4.78 mAh cm -2 is achieved after 280 cycles, which is comparable to the industry standards required for practical application.

Security Enhancements for Distributed Energy Resource Systems Interconnected with Distribution Networks: Final Technical Report

The revised IEEE 1547 Standard defines new complex communication-adjustable voltage and frequency regulation and ride-through characteristics, while maintaining the general antiislanding requirement for unintentional islanding situations. Unintentional islanding is prohibited while intentional islanding is specifically allowed, thus effectively enabling microgrid operation mode. Further, IEEE 1547-2018 Standard introduces new requirements in terms of interoperability so that the DER plant/circuit segments may be seamlessly integrated with the utility networks but at the same time become vulnerable to a cyber-attack. Traditional cybersecurity measures including encryption, authentication and role-based access control may not be fully implementable to all communication protocols specified in the IEEE 1547 Standard. Therefore, in this project we have identified, researched, implemented and tested several cyberphysical approaches that rely mostly on the behavior of the DER circuit and may help with validating the incoming command and control action potentially coming through an insecure communications channel. Additionally, we have built semantic models and communications profiles for DER facilities and have implemented lightweight IEC 61850 based publisher-subscriber GOOSE messaging mechanism, with security extensions in terms of authentication and encryption. The project proposed information models for integration into UCA OpenFMB 2.0 profiles focusing on grid code compliance.

Residential and Small Commercial Solar Photovoltaic and Storage Permitting, Inspection, and Interconnection Timelines: A Retrospective Review (2017-2023)

This report is part of the ongoing Solar Time-Based Residential Analytics and Cycle Time Estimator (SolarTRACE) project, led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The SolarTRACE project utilizes time-stamped project-level data provided by installer-partners to assess nationwide and AHJ- and utility-level PI&I and other solar PV adoption timelines since 2017. Our dataset now covers 22% of residential solar and 33% of residential storage installs in the U.S. since 2017. This report provides an update to our previous 2022 report (Cruce et al., 2022b) and includes: updated 2017 2023 project timelines for residential rooftop solar PV up to 20kW; updated tracking of permitting process changes at nearly 4,000 AHJs nationwide; and first-ever reporting of timelines for residential PV+storage projects up to 20kW.
