Bias Correction of Hydrologic Projections Strongly Impacts Inferred Climate Vulnerabilities in Institutionally Complex Water Systems
Water-resources planners use regional water management models (WMMs) to identify vulnerabilities to climate change. Frequently, dynamically downscaled climate inputs are used in conjunction with land-surface models (LSMs) to provide hydrologic streamflow projections, which serve as critical inputs for WMMs. Here, we show how even modest projection errors can strongly affect assessments of water availability and financial stability for irrigation districts in California. Specifically, our results highlight that LSM errors in projections of flood and drought extremes are highly interactive across timescales, path-dependent, and can be amplified when modeling infrastructure systems (e.g., misrepresenting banked groundwater). Common strategies for reducing errors in deterministic LSM hydrologic projections (e.g., bias correction) can themselves strongly distort projected climate vulnerabilities and misrepresent their inferred financial consequences. Overall, our results indicate a need to move beyond standard deterministic climate projection and error management frameworks that are dependent on single simulated climate change scenario outcomes.

FY22 X-Hab: Rochester Institute of Technology: Gamification and Performance-Based Monitoring of Sensorimotor Training Activities
Proprioception is the body’s ability to sense movement, action, and location. Proprioceptive training is crucial for astronauts because humans balance system, cognitive functions, and muscle tone heavily rely on Earth’s gravity. The goal of this project is to create a training system that strengthens those characteristics to ensure astronauts not only maintain their coordination and cognitive skills, but improve upon them as well. Furthermore, the system’s live biofeedback provides astronauts with sensorimotor feedback to correct any balance dysfunction. The completed system prototype and data collected from it will support NASA’s knowledge base about the use of gamification for sensorimotor training activities.

NASA Small Spacecraft Systems Virtual Institute – Building A SmallSat Community
Small spacecraft (smallsats) continue to find meaningful applications in the exploration of space and the Earth. Many agencies, companies, and universities are successfully exploiting these lower cost platforms, with their associated higher flight frequencies to rapidly develop and test novel technologies, conduct robotic exploration missions, and perform a wide range of science investigations. In addition to their lower costs to develop, integrate, launch, and operate, smallsats foster alternate approaches that can be used to conduct space research. This allows non-traditional individuals, groups, and organizations to contribute to space exploration and science applying novel management approaches spanning mission design, testing, and operations. Many of these approaches are based on collaborations and networks and have origins in related industries. Over time, a smallsat community has evolved to embody a new way of doing space. NASA, through various methods supports the development and growth of these communities, both within the agency and externally. This paper describes the processes, tools, and resources that NASA has developed and deployed to enable, inform, streamline, and sustain the smallsat community for the benefit of the space agency.

Goddard Institute for Space Studies Research Publications 2022
The GISS Research Publications document was initiated in 1992 as an annual summary of our research based on quick inexpensive reproduction of excerpts of published papers. Its aim is twofold: to communicate in and outside the GISS community what we do and how we got about it, as well as to record annual accomplishments, providing a continual basis for measuring progress.
