Linear polarization–direction correlations in $\gamma $-ray scattering experiments

Scattering measurements with incident linearly polarized γ rays provide information on spins, parities, and γ-ray multipolarity mixing coefficients, and, therefore, on the nuclear matrix elements involved in the transitions. Here, we present the general formalism for analyzing the observed angular correlations. The expressions are used to compute three-dimensional radiation patterns, which are important tools for optimizing experimental setups. Frequently, γ-ray transitions can proceed via two multipolarities that mix coherently. In such cases, the relative phases of the nuclear matrix elements are important when comparing results from different measurements. We discuss different phase conventions that have been used in the literature and present their relationships. Finally, we propose a basic experimental geometry consisting of detectors located at four different spatial locations. For this geometry, we present the measured anisotropies of the emitted γ rays in graphical format as an aid in the data analysis.

Gamma-Ray Mirrors (Quarterly Progress Report Q2 FY20 Jan-Mar 2020)

During the second quarter of FY20, the optic design, or Phase II Task 2 of the project, continued. Our investigation of two full revolution shell designs has shown that the radius of the optic would be small to maintain throws to reasonable limits. These efforts are informing our alternative segmented optics design in Q3. We have also started investigating the Kirkpatrick-Baez Optic as a backup option.

Gamma-Ray Mirrors. Quarterly Progress Report Q3 FY20 April-June 2020

During the third quarter of FY20, the optic design, or Phase II Task 2 of the project, continued. Our effort was focused on verifying 3D ray-tracing simulations representative of the IFEL set-up with cross-code comparison. Simulations for a single reflection Kirkpatrick-Baez optic showed the feasibility of a design that provides 1D focusing at the detector. Following an increase in scope of work in June, we have been actively engaging in preparations to conduct an additional experiment at IFEL before the end of the fiscal year.

Introduction to InterSpec for Gamma-Ray Analysis [Slides]

InterSpec is a spectrum viewing and analysis tool that can be used for nuclide identification and quantification. Developed at Sandia National Laboratories, it is open source and can be obtained at: https://github.com/sandialabs/interspec/releases. These slides do not cover nuclide quantification and only touch on nuclide identification (ID).

Exploring Gamma-Ray and Neutron Spectroscopy Missions to Mars Caves [Slides]

In this work, we investigate the sensitivity of active neutron detector systems in Mars caves using MCNP6 to model neutron transport in different cave geometries, compositions, and detectors to determine if active neutron measurements can be used to identify the hydration of cave walls vs floor vs ceilings, and to perform a concept study for potential future Mars cave missions in search of hydration and habitable regions.

Nuclear Excitation and Fission Studies with Short Pulsed Laser-Driven High Energy Gamma Rays

We propose the development of a platform to study photon excitation of high Z nuclei utilizing a high energy (70 J) short pulsed (500 fs) laser to drive > 5 MeV γ-radiation. The laser beam will be focused onto a specially prepared foam or corrugated conveying target, where it generates relativistic MeV electrons via ponderomotive and wake-field acceleration mechanisms. γ-emission is produced in the form of bremsstrahlung in the same target or in a separated high-Z γ-production target hit by the accelerated MeV electrons. The high energy γ-rays will be utilized to provide nuclear state excitation in the short time domain. The γ platform will allow to investigate photo fission of high Z target material positioned in an auxiliary target chamber in the γ-ray beam path via the established gas transport scheme. The photo fission yield will provide furthermore diagnostic information on the produced γ-yield. In addition, γ-spectroscopy will be used to identify γ-lines for the diagnostic of the excited state population of high Z target nuclei. This research capability is relevant to the understanding of how nuclear excitation effects fission, in relevance to recent astrophysical observations on element nucleosynthesis. These processes involve neutron-rich fragments and processes such as fission recycling (e. g. in neutron stars outer crusts).
