Comments on the entanglement spectrum of de Sitter space

We argue that the Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole entropy formula does not imply that the entanglement spectrum of the vacuum density matrix of de Sitter space is flat. Specifically, we show that the expectation value of a random projection operator of dimension d >> 1, on a Hilbert space of dimension D >> d and in a density matrix ρ = e –K with strictly positive spectrum, is $\frac{d}{D} \large{(}1 + o \large{(}\frac{1}{\sqrt{d}}\large{)}$, independent of the spectrum of the density matrix. In addition, for a suitable class of spectra the asymptotic estimates Tr (ρK) ~ ln D – o(1) and Tr [ρ(K – $\langle$K$\rangle$) 2 ] = a $\langle$K$\rangle$ are compatible for any order one constant a. We discuss a simple family of matrix models and projections that can replicate such modular Hamiltonians and the SdS entropy formula.

Entanglement entropy of a superflow

We consider the theory of N free Dirac fermions with a uniformly winding mass, me iqx , in two spacetime dimensions. This theory (which describes for instance a superconducting current in an N-channel wire) has been proposed to have a higher-spin gravity with scalar matter as the large-N dual. To order m 2 , however, thermodynamic quantities in it can be computed using standard general relativity instead. Here, we consider the question if the same is true for the entanglement entropy (EE). By comparing results obtained on two sides of the duality, we find that general relativity indeed accounts correctly for the EE of an interval to order m 2 (and all orders in q).

Probing Hawking radiation through capacity of entanglement

We consider the capacity of entanglement in models related with the gravitational phase transitions. The capacity is labeled by the replica parameter which plays a similar role to the inverse temperature in thermodynamics. In the end of the world brane model of a radiating black hole the capacity has a peak around the Page time indicating the phase transition between replica wormhole geometries of different types of topology. Similarly, in a moving mirror model describing Hawking radiation the capacity typically shows a discontinuity when the dominant saddle switches between two phases, which can be seen as a formation of island regions. In either case we find the capacity can be an invaluable diagnostic for a black hole evaporation process.

Universal behavior of entanglement entropies in interface CFTs from general holographic spacetimes

In previous work universal behavior was conjectured for the behavior of the logarithmic terms in the entanglement entropy of intervals in 1+1 dimensional interface conformal field theories (ICFTs). These putative universal terms were exhibited both in free field theories as well as a large class of holographic models. In this work we demonstrate that this same behavior in fact is realized in any holographic ICFT, significantly strengthening the case for the conjecture.

Hollow-grams: generalized entanglement wedges from the gravitational path integral

Recently, Bousso and Penington (BP) made a proposal for the entanglement wedge associated to a gravitating bulk region. In this paper, we derive this proposal in time-reflection symmetric settings using the gravitational path integral. To do this, we exploit the connection between random tensor networks (RTNs) and fixed-geometry states in gravity. We define the entropy of a bulk region in an RTN by removing tensors in that region and computing the entropy of the open legs thus generated in the “hollowed” RTN. We thus derive the BP proposal for RTNs and hence, also for fixed-geometry states in gravity. By then expressing a general holographic state as a superposition over fixed-geometry states and using a diagonal approximation, we provide a general gravitational path integral derivation of the BP proposal. We demonstrate that the saddles computing the Rényi entropy Sn depend on how the bulk region is gauge-invariantly specified. Nevertheless, we show that the BP proposal is universally reproduced in the n → 1 limit.

Knitting wormholes by entanglement in supergravity

We construct a single-boundary wormhole geometry in type IIB supergravity by perturbing two stacks of N extremal D3-branes in the decoupling limit. The solution interpolates from a two-sided planar AdS-Schwarzschild geometry in the interior, through a harmonic two-center solution in the intermediate region, to an asymptotic AdS space. The construction involves a CPT twist in the gluing of the wormhole to the exterior throats that gives a global monodromy to some coordinates, while preserving orientability. The geometry has a dual interpretation in $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 SU(2N) Super Yang-Mills theory in terms of a Higgsed SU(2N) → S(U(N) x U(N)) theory in which $\mathcal{O}$(N 2 ) degrees of freedom in each SU(N) sector are entangled in an approximate thermofield double state at a temperature much colder than the Higgs scale. We argue that the solution can be made long-lived by appropriate choice of parameters, and comment on mechanisms for generating traversability. We also describe a construction of a double wormhole between two universes.

Genuine k -partite correlations and entanglement in the ground state of the Dicke model for interacting qubits

Here, in this work, we calculate and study correlations of the Dicke model in the presence of qubit–qubit interaction. Whereas the analysis of correlations among its subsystems is essential for the understanding of corresponding critical phenomena and for performing quantum information tasks, the majority of correlation measures are restricted to bipartitions due to the inherent challenges associated with handling multiple partitions. To circunvent this we employ the calculation of Genuine Multipartite Correlations (GMC) based on the invariance of our model under particle permutation. We then quantify the correlations within each subpart of the system, as well as the percentage contribution of each GMC of order $k$, highlighting the many-body behaviors for different regimes of parameters. Additionally, we show that GMC signal both first- and second-order quantum phase transitions present in the model. Furthermore, as GMC encompasses both classical and quantum correlations, we employ Quantum Fisher Information (QFI) to detect genuine multipartite entanglement. Ultimately, we map the Dicke model with interacting qubits to spin in solids interacting with a quantum field of magnons, thus demonstrating a potential experimental realization of this model.

Spin-orbit entanglement in the Color Glass Condensate

We compute the spin-orbit correlations of quarks and gluons at small-x and show that the helicity and the orbital angular momentum of individual partons are strongly anti-aligned even in unpolarized or spinless hadrons and nuclei. Combined with the fact that gluons in the Color Glass Condensate are linearly polarized, our finding indicates that the helicity and the orbital angular momentum of single gluons are maximally entangled in a quantum mechanical sense.

Entanglement Effect and Angular Momentum Conservation in a Nonseparable Tunneling Treatment

The important, and often dominant, role of tunneling in low temperature kinetics has resulted in numerous theoretical explorations into the methodology for predicting it. Nevertheless, there are still key aspects of the derivations that are lacking, particularly for nonseparable systems in the low temperature regime, and further explorations of the physical factors affecting the tunneling rate are warranted. In this work we obtain a closed-form rate expression for the tunneling rate constant that is a direct analog of the rigid-rotor-harmonic-oscillator expression. This expression introduces a novel "entanglement factor" that modulates the reaction rate. Furthermore, we are able to extend this expression, which is valid for nonseparable systems at low temperatures, to properly account for the conservation of angular momentum. In contrast, previous calculations have considered only vibrational transverse modes and so effectively employ a decoupled rotational partition function for the orientational modes. We also suggest a simple theoretical model to describe the tunneling effects in the vicinity of the crossover temperature (the temperature where tunneling becomes the dominating mechanism). This model allows one to naturally classify, interpret, and predict experimental data. Among other things, it quantitatively explains in simple terms the so-called "quantum bobsled" effect, also known as the negative centrifugal effect, which is related to curvature of the reaction path. Taken together, the expressions obtained here allow one to predict the thermal and E-resolved rate constants over broad ranges of temperatures and energies.

Is solid copper oxalate a spin chain or a mixture of entangled spin pairs?

Macroscopic assemblies of interacting spins give rise to a broad spectrum of behaviors determined by the spatial arrangement of the magnetic sites and the electronic interactions between them. Compounds of copper (II), in which each copper carries spin 1/2, exhibit a vast variety of physical properties. For antiferromagnetically coupled spin sites, there are two limiting scenarios: spin chains in which the spins can exhibit a long-range order or a mixture of dimers in which the spins within each pair are entangled but do not communicate with the spins from other dimers. In principle, the two types can be distinguished on the basis of experimental observations and modeling using empirically parameterized effective Hamiltonians, but in practice, ambiguity may persist for decades, as is the case for copper oxalate. Here we use high-level ab initio calculations to establish the validity of the nearest-site Heisenberg model and to predict the interaction strength between the magnetic sites. Finally, the computed magnetic susceptibility provides an unambiguous interpretation of magnetic experiments performed throughout half a century, clearly supporting the infinite spin-chain behavior of solid copper oxalate.

Two Cycling Centers in One Molecule: Communication by Through-Bond Interactions and Entanglement of the Unpaired Electrons

Many applications in quantum information science (QIS) rely on the ability to laser- cool molecules. The scope of applications can be expanded if laser-coolable molecules possess two or more cycling centers, i.e., moieties capable of scattering photons via multiple absorption-emission events. Here in this paper we employ equation-of-motion coupled-cluster method for double electron attachment (EOM-DEA-CCSD) to study the electronic structure of hypermetallic molecules with two alkaline earth metals connected by an acetylene linker. The electronic structure of the molecules is similar to that of two separated alkali metals; however, the interaction between the two electrons is weak and largely dominated by through-bond interactions. The communication between the two cycling centers is quantified by the extent of the entanglement of the two unpaired electrons associated with each center. This contribution highlights the rich electronic structure of hypermetallic molecules that may advance various applications in QIS and beyond.

Nonlinear Shear Rheology of Entangled Polymer Rings

Steady-state shear viscosity η($\bar{γ}$) of unconcatenated ring polymer melts as a function of the shear rate $\bar{γ}$ is studied by a combination of experiments, simulations, and theory. Experiments using polystyrenes with Z ≈ 5 and Z ≈ 11 entanglements indicate weaker shear thinning for rings compared to linear polymers exhibiting power law scaling of shear viscosity η ~ $\bar{γ}$ –0.56 ± 0.02 , independent of chain length, for Weissenberg numbers up to about 10 2 . Nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations using the bead-spring model reveal a similar behavior with η ~ $\bar{γ}$ -0.57 ± 0.08 for 4 ≤ Z ≤ 57. Viscosity decreases with chain length for high $\bar{γ}$. In our experiments, we see the onset of this regime, and in simulations, which we extended to Wi ~ 10 4 , the nonuniversality is fully developed. In addition to a naive scaling theory yielding for the universal regime η ~ $\bar{γ}$ –0.57 , we developed a novel shear slit model explaining many details of observed conformations and dynamics as well as the chain length-dependent behavior of viscosity at large $\bar{γ}$. The signature feature of the model is the presence of two distinct length scales: the size of tension blobs and much larger thickness of a shear slit in which rings are self-consistently confined in the velocity gradient direction and which is dictated by the size of a chain section with relaxation time 1/$\bar{γ}$. These two length scales control the two normal stress differences. In this model, the chain length-dependent onset of nonuniversal behavior is set by tension blobs becoming as small as about one Kuhn segment. This model explains the approximate applicability of the Cox–Merz rule for ring polymers.

Smoother Surfaces Enhance Diffusion of Nanorods in Entangled Polymer Melts

Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the diffusion of thin nanorods in entangled polymer melts for varying nanorod length and roughness. While prior studies observed a nanorod parallel diffusion constant scaling inversely with rod length D ∥ ~ l –1 , here, we show that this scaling is not universal and depends sensitively on the nanorod surface roughness. We observe D ∥ ~ l –k , where k < 1 and decreases with decreasing surface roughness. The weaker scaling is driven by the non-Gaussian diffusion of nanorods due to the emergence of an intermittent hopping process that becomes more pronounced with decreasing roughness at the monomer scale. Analysis shows that the mean hop size grows for smoother rods but shows little to no variation with rod length. The mean hopping frequency shows no dependence on either rod length or roughness, suggesting it originates from the polymer melt environment. Further, our results show that the small-scale features of the nanorod surface strongly influence the large-scale and long-time transport of nanorods in polymer matrices, creating new material design opportunities for precisely engineered nanocomposites.

Mechanically Accelerated Depolymerization of Entangled Linear Polymer Melts

Mechanical forces can enhance the chemical depolymerization of synthetic polymers when shear flow accelerates chain scission. To quantify the extent of mechanically-accelerated scission, the effect of simple shear flow (duration and strength) with low Weissenberg and Deborah numbers was investigated by considering the impact of applied work in both simple shear and shear dominated mixed flows. Hydrogenated polyisoprene was chosen as a model linear, entangled system. The conditions (strain amplitude, frequency, and shearing time) necessary to increase chain scission were assessed in the rubbery melt. Shear flow accelerated chain scission at higher temperatures, suggesting an activated process. Isothermal scission versus work curves were superposed by applying shift factors a T,S , whose Arrhenius-like temperature dependence gave an apparent activation energy for chain scission of ~ 110 kJ/mol, which is likely a combination of the activation energy of viscosity and bond energy. This work provides a base for quantifying the impact of shear on depolymerization of polymer melts and highlight the connection between viscous dissipation and scission chemistry.

Elucidating Polymer Binder Entanglement in Freestanding Sulfide Solid-State Electrolyte Membranes

This study advances the development of flexible, sheet-type sulfide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for use in all-solid-state batteries, emphasizing the important and previously insufficiently investigated role of polymer binder entanglement. Here, the molecular weight of polymer binders is pivotal in crafting robust, freestanding SSE films. Our research uncovers a dual impact: higher molecular weight binders bolster the structural integrity of SSE films but elevate grain boundary resistance and diminish critical current density, whereas lower molecular weight poly(isobutylene) films, despite their more uniform distribution, lack the essential strain hardening or strength for sustained active material contact. Crucially, full cells employing higher molecular weight binders demonstrate improved discharge capacity retention, contrasting sharply with the notable capacity degradation in lower molecular weight cells. Our findings not only deepen the comprehension of binder influences in solid-state batteries but also chart a course for refining all-solid-state battery technologies, a key stride for the future of energy storage solutions.

Unconventional bipartite entanglement in the quantum dimer magnet Yb2Be 2 SiO 7

The quantum dimer magnet, with antiferromagnetic intradimer and interdimer Heisenberg exchange between spin-1/2 moments, is known to host an (|$\uparrow$$\downarrow$$\rangle$ - |$\downarrow$$\uparrow$$\rangle$)/$\sqrt{2}$ singlet ground state when the intradimer exchange is dominant. Rare-earth-based quantum dimer systems with strong spin-orbit coupling offer the opportunity for tuning their magnetic properties by using magnetic anisotropy as a control knob. Here, we present bulk characterization and neutron scattering measurements of the quantum dimer magnet Yb 2 Be 2 SiO 7 . We find that the Yb3+ ions can be described by an effective spin-1/2 model at low temperatures and the system does not show signs of magnetic order down to 50 mK. The magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron spectroscopy data can be well-described by an isolated dimer model with highly anisotropic exchange that stabilizes a singlet ground state with a wavefunction (|$\uparrow$$\uparrow$$\rangle$ - |$\downarrow$$\downarrow$$\rangle$)/$\sqrt{2}$ or (|$\uparrow$$\uparrow$$\rangle$ + |$\downarrow$$\downarrow$$\rangle$)/$\sqrt{2}$. Our results show that strong spin-orbit coupling can induce unusual entangled states of matter in quantum dimer magnets.

Entanglement of a nuclear spin qubit register in silicon photonics

Colour centres provide an optical interface to quantum registers based on electron and nuclear spin qubits in solids. The T centre in silicon is an emerging spin–photon interface that combines telecom O-band optical transitions and an electron spin in a scalable photonics platform. Here, in this study, we integrate T centres into single-mode photonic waveguides in a silicon-on-insulator platform. We demonstrate the initialization, coherent control and state read-out of a three-qubit register based on the electron spin of a T centre coupled to a hydrogen and a silicon nuclear spin. The spin register exhibits spin echo coherence times of 0.41(2) ms for the electron spin, 112(12) ms for the hydrogen nuclear spin and 67(7) ms for the silicon nuclear spin. We use nuclear–nuclear two-qubit gates to generate entanglement between the two nuclear spins with a fidelity of F = 0.77(3) and a coherence time of ${T}_{2}^{* }=2.60(8)$ ms. Our results show that a T centre in silicon photonics can realize a multi-qubit register with an optical interface for quantum communication.
