Evaluating some computer enhancement algorithms that improve the visibility of cometary morphology

The observed morphology of cometary comae is determined by ejection circumstances and the interaction of the ejected material with the local environment. Anisotropic emission can provide useful information on such things as orientation of the nucleus, location of active areas on the nucleus, and the formation of ion structure near the nucleus. However, discrete coma features are usually diffuse, of low amplitude, and superimposed on a steep intensity gradient radial to the nucleus. To improve the visibility of these features, a variety of digital enhancement algorithms were employed with varying degrees of success. They usually produce some degree of spatial filtering, and are chosen to optimize visibility of certain detail. Since information in the image is altered, it is important to understand the effects of parameter selection and processing artifacts can have on subsequent interpretation. Using the criteria that the ideal algorithm must enhance low contrast features while not introducing misleading artifacts (or features that cannot be seen in the stretched, unprocessed image), the suitability of various algorithms that aid cometary studies were assessed. The strong and weak points of each are identified in the context of maintaining positional integrity of features at the expense of photometric information.

Molecules with enhanced electronic polarizabilities based on defect-like states in conjugated polymers

Highly conjugated organic polymers typically have large non-resonant electronic susceptibilities, which give the molecules unusual optical properties. To enhance these properties, defects are introduced into the polymer chain. Examples include light doping of the conjugated polymer and synthesis, conjugated polymers which incorporate either electron donating or accepting groups, and conjugated polymers which contain a photoexcitable species capable of reversibly transferring its electron to an acceptor. Such defects in the chain permit enhancement of the second hyperpolarizability by at least an order of magnitude.

Forced convection and flow boiling with and without enhancement devices for top-side-heated horizontal channels

The effect of enhancement devices on flow boiling heat transfer in coolant channels, which are heated either from the top side or uniformly was studied. Studies are completed of the variations in the local (axial and circumferential) and mean heat transfer coefficients in horizontal, top-heated coolant channels with smooth walls and internal heat transfer enhancement devices. The working fluid is freon-11. The objectives are to: (1) examine the variations in both the mean and local (axial and circumferential) heat transfer coefficients for a circular coolant channel with either smooth walls or with both a twisted tape and spiral finned walls; (2) examine the effect of channel diameter (and the length-to-diameter aspect ratio) variations for the smooth wall channel; and (3) develop and improved data reduction analysis. The case of the top-heated, horizontal flow channel with smooth wall (1.37 cm inside diameter, and 122 cm heated length) was completed. The data were reduced using a preliminary analysis based on the heated hydraulic diameter. Preliminary examination of the local heat transfer coefficient variations indicated that there are significant axial and circumferential variations. However, it appears that the circumferential variation is more significant than the axial ones. In some cases, the circumferential variations were as much as a factor of ten. The axial variations rarely exceeded a factor of three.

Millimeter-wave sensor image enhancement

Images from an airborne, scanning radiometer operating at a frequency of 98 GHz have been analyzed. The millimeter-wave images were obtained in 1985-1986 using the JPL millimeter-wave imaging sensor. The goal of this study was to enhance the information content of these images and make their interpretation easier. A visual-interpretative approach was used for information extraction from the images. This included application of nonlinear transform techniques for noise reduction and for color, contrast, and edge enhancement. Results of using the techniques on selected millimeter-wave images are discussed.

Ultrasonic correlator versus signal averager as a signal to noise enhancement instrument

Ultrasonic inspection of thick and attenuating materials is hampered by the reduced amplitudes of the propagated waves to a degree that the noise is too high to enable meaningful interpretation of the data. In order to overcome the low Signal to Noise (S/N) ratio, a correlation technique has been developed. In this method, a continuous pseudo-random pattern generated digitally is transmitted and detected by piezoelectric transducers. A correlation is performed in the instrument between the received signal and a variable delayed image of the transmitted one. The result is shown to be proportional to the impulse response of the investigated material, analogous to a signal received from a pulsed system, with an improved S/N ratio. The degree of S/N enhancement depends on the sweep rate. This paper describes the correlator, and compares it to the method of enhancing S/N ratio by averaging the signals. The similarities and differences between the two are highlighted and the potential advantage of the correlator system is explained.

Revealing topographic lineaments through IHS enhancement of DEM data

Intensity-hue-saturation (IHS) processing of slope (dip), aspect (dip direction), and elevation to reveal subtle topographic lineaments which may not be obvious in the unprocessed data are used to enhance digital elevation model (DEM) data from northwestern Nevada. This IHS method of lineament identification was applied to a mosiac of 12 square degrees using a Cray Y-MP8/864. Square arrays from 3 x 3 to 31 x 31 points were tested as well as several different slope enhancements. When relatively few points are used to fit the plane, lineaments of various lengths are observed and a mechanism for lineament classification is described. An area encompassing the gold deposits of the Carlin trend and including the Rain in the southeast to Midas in the northwest is investigated in greater detail. The orientation and density of lineaments may be determined on the gently sloping pediment surface as well as in the more steeply sloping ranges.

Magnetic flux transport of decaying active regions and enhanced magnetic network

Several series of coordinated observations on decaying active regions and enhanced magnetic network regions on the sun were carried out jointly at Big Bear Solar Observatory and at the Huairou Solar Observing Station of the Bejing Astronomical Observatory in China. The magnetic field evolution in several regions was followed closely for three to seven days. The magnetic flux transport from the remnants of decayed active regions was studied, along with the evolution and lifetime of the magnetic network which defines the boundaries of supergranules. The magnetic flux transport in an enhanced network region was studied in detail and found to be negative. Also briefly described are some properties of moving magnetic features around a sunspot. Results of all of the above studies are presented.

Relativistic electron enhancements - Simultaneous measurements from synchronous and low altitude satellites

This paper presents, for the first time, simultaneous measurements of trapped relativistic electron enhancements at synchronous altitude and precipitating electrons in the bounce loss cone at low altitudes. The measurements show that the daily variations in the precipitation flux for L greater than 5 correlated well with the daily variations in the total flux at high altitude, both with respect to sudden enhancements as well as flux depletions. The daily averaged precipitating flux (E greater than 1 MeV) at L = 6.1 to 7.1 was about 0.3 percent of the daily averaged directional flux (E not less than 1.5 MeV) observed at synchronous altitude, whereas within narrow spikes the precipitating directional fluxes were often within a factor of 10 of the daily averaged trapped fluxes. Strong depletions in the synchronous altitude not less than 1.5 MeV electron intensities are shown to be associated with low-altitude measurements of the equatorward movement of precipitating spikes to lower L shells.

Enhancement of the no-vent fill process

This paper presents an analytical and experimental evaluation of an enhanced techniques for no-vent fill. The method entails injecting liquid through the top of the receiver vessel, thereby increasing surface area and agitation of the ullage/liquid interface. Both of these factors promote condensation induced ullage collapse, and reduce compressive impedance to the incoming liquid. The enhanced process was analyzed by modifying the surface area algorithm of an existing tank thermodynamic code to model a downward-pointing, conical jet impringing on a steadily rising liquid surface. Transient pressure and temperature measurements from several tests with Freon-114 were input into the revised model to calculate condensation rate as a function of fill level. By expressing these rates in dimensionless form (i.e., in terms of Stanton number and Prandtl number), an empirical correlation similar to the submerged jet model of Brown and Sonin (1989) was derived. This provided a basis for developing an expression which relates top fill to bottom fill performance.

Mixing enhancement of reacting parallel fuel jets in a supersonic combustor

Pursuant to a NASA-Langley development program for a scramjet HST propulsion system entailing the optimization of the scramjet combustor's fuel-air mixing and reaction characteristics, a numerical study has been conducted of the candidate parallel fuel injectors. Attention is given to a method for flow mixing-process and combustion-efficiency enhancement in which a supersonic circular hydrogen jet coflows with a supersonic air stream. When enhanced by a planar oblique shock, the injector configuration exhibited a substantial degree of induced vorticity in the fuel stream which increased mixing and chemical reaction rates, relative to the unshocked configuration. The resulting heat release was effective in breaking down the stable hydrogen vortex pair that had inhibited more extensive fuel-air mixing.

Optical emission enhancements in Be stars

Be stars show enhancement of optical emission up to a few magnitudes. Optical continuum enhancements due to (1) conversion of Lyman continuum photons of the Be star to visual photons in the envelope of the Be star, (2) emission from the H II region formed by X-ray and EUV emission from a compact object in binary motion around the Be star, and (3) emission from an accretion disk around the compact object, are considered. These considerations indicate that large increases of optical emission (above 0.5 mag) would need an ionizing source other than the Be star (for example, an accreting compact object emitting radiation). Specific examples of large increases of optical emission as in the sources Gamma Cas and 4U 0115 + 63 are discussed.

Enhanced Method Of Reduction Of Dynamical Models

Enhanced projection-and-assembly method is recent product of efforts to model mathematically dynamics of vibrations of large, flexible structures. In projection-and-assembly method modes contributing significantly to control input and output points selected at system (overall structure) level, then projected (in abstract mathematical sense) onto components of system. In enhanced version, static correction modes capture static contributions of those modes neglected in reduced-order model. Reduced models for suppressing vibrations of structures made more accurate.

Flow boiling with enhancement devices for cold plate coolant channel design

Future space exploration and commercialization will require more efficient heat rejection systems. For the required heat transfer rates, such systems must use advanced heat transfer techniques. Forced two phase flow boiling heat transfer with enhancements falls in this category. However, moderate to high quality two phase systems tend to require higher pressure losses. This report is divided into two major parts: (1) Multidimensional wall temperature measurement and heat transfer enhancement for top heated horizontal channels with flow boiling; and (2) Improved analytical heat transfer data reduction for a single side heated coolant channel. Part 1 summarizes over forty experiments which involve both single phase convection and flow boiling in a horizontal channel heated externally from the top side. Part 2 contains parametric dimensionless curves with parameters such as the coolant channel radius ratio, the Biot number, and the circumferential coordinate.

Space charge enhanced plasma gradient effects on satellite electric field measurements

It has been recognized that plasma gradients can cause error in magnetospheric electric field measurements made by double probes. Space charge enhanced Plasma Gradient Induced Error (PGIE) is discussed in general terms, presenting the results of a laboratory experiment designed to demonstrate this error, and deriving a simple expression that quantifies this error. Experimental conditions were not identical to magnetospheric conditions, although efforts were made to insure the relevant physics applied to both cases. The experimental data demonstrate some of the possible errors in electric field measurements made by strongly emitting probes due to space charge effects in the presence of plasma gradients. Probe errors in space and laboratory conditions are discussed, as well as experimental error. In the final section, theoretical aspects are examined and an expression is derived for the maximum steady state space charge enhanced PGIE taken by two identical current biased probes.

Oxygen stabilization induced enhancement in superconducting characteristics of high-Tc oxides

In an attempt to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the high temperature superconducting oxides, high T(sub c) composites were prepared composed of the 123 compounds and AgO. The presence of extra oxygen due to the decomposition of AgO at high temperature is found to stabilize the superconducting 123 phase. Ag is found to serve as clean flux for grain growth and precipitates as pinning center. Consequently, almost two orders of magnitude enhancement in critical current densities were also observed in these composites. In addition, these composites also show much improvement in workability and shape formation. On the other hand, proper oxygen treatment of Y5Ba6Cu11Oy was found to possibly stabilize superconducting phase with T(sub c) near 250 K. I-V, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements indicate the existence of this ultra high T(sub c) phase in this compound. Detailed structure, microstructure, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of the superconducting composites and the ultra high T(sub c) compound are presented and discussed.

Real-time edge-enhanced optical correlator

Edge enhancement of an input image by four-wave mixing a first write beam with a second write beam in a photorefractive crystal, GaAs, was achieved for VanderLugt optical correlation with an edge enhanced reference image by optimizing the power ratio of a second write beam to the first write beam (70:1) and optimizing the power ratio of a read beam, which carries the reference image to the first write beam (100:701). Liquid crystal TV panels are employed as spatial light modulators to change the input and reference images in real time.
