Investigation of an electronic image enhancer for radiographs.

Radiographs of nuclear and aerospace components were studied with a closed-circuit television system to determine the advantages of electronic enhancement in radiographic nondestructive evaluation. The radiographic images were examined on a television monitor under various degrees of magnification and enhancement. The enhancement was accomplished by generating a video signal whose amplitude is proportional to the rate of change of density. Points, lines, edges, and other density variations that are faintly registered in the original image are rendered in sharp relief. Examples of the applications of this mode of enhancement are discussed together with the system's dynamic response and resolution.

Digital enhancement of multispectral MSS data for maximum image visibility

A systematic approach to the enhancement of images has been developed. This approach exploits two principal features involved in the observation of images: the properties of human vision and the statistics of the images being observed. The rationale of the enhancement procedure is as follows: in the observation of some features of interest in an image, the range of objective luminance-chrominance values being displayed is generally limited and does not use the whole perceptual range of vision of the observer. The purpose of the enhancement technique is to expand and distort in a systematic way the grey scale values of each of the multispectral bands making up a color composite, to enhance the average visibility of the features being observed.

Observations of enhanced ion line frequency spectrum during Arecibo ionospheric modification experiment

The Arecibo 430 MHz incoherent scatter radar (ISR) was used to monitor the effects of modifying the ionosphere by a high power HF transmitter feeding the 305 m reflector antenna. When in the ordinary magnetoionic mode parametric instabilities develop in the ionosphere near the reflection level. Manifestations of these instabilities are the strong enhancement of Langmuir oscillations in the direction of the ISR beam at a wavelength of 35 cm and the simultaneous much weaker enhancement of ion oscillations in that direction. The spectral analysis of the enhanced peak with a height resolution of 2.4 km shows that the ionic mode enhancement most often has a double humped frequency spectrum corresponding to up- and down-going ion acoustic waves. The shape of the frequency spectrum is interpreted in terms of a stable oscillation which is driven by a secondary electrostatic field caused by nonlinear interaction of Langmuir waves within a cone centered on the magnetic field and by the scattering of the pump field on stable Langmuir waves travelling along the direction of the ISR.

Analog enhancement of radiographic images

The paper shows how analog methods for edge sharpening, contrast enhancement, and expansion of the range of gray levels of particular interest are effective for easy on-line application to video viewing of X-ray roentgenograms or to fluoroscopy. The technique for analog enhancement of radiographic images is a modified version of the system designed by Fuchs et al. (1972), whereby an all directional second derivative signal called detail signal is used to produce both vertical and horizontal enhancement of the image. Particular attention is given to noise filtration and contrast enhancement. Numerous radiographs supplement the text.

Land classification of south-central Iowa from computer enhanced images

The author has identified the following significant results. The Iowa Geological Survey developed its own capability for producing color products from digitally enhanced LANDSAT data. Research showed that efficient production of enhanced images required full utilization of both computer and photographic enhancement procedures. The 29 August 1972 photo-optically enhanced color composite was more easily interpreted for land classification purposes than standard color composites.

Preferential enhancements of the solar flare-accelerated nuclei carbon to zinc from about 20-300 MeV/nucleon

IMP 8 satellite measurements with a charged-particle telescope are examined which show that three large solar flares in late 1977 displayed preferential enhancements of abundances from C through Fe at energies of about 20 to 400 MeV/nucleon. It is found that the differential energy spectra of C, O, Mg, Si, and Fe, as well as protons and helium, are best fitted by power laws in energy per nucleon or rigidity with an index of 2.3 + or - 0.2, that the spectra of most of the even-Z nuclei have essentially the same slope, and that all the enhancements were independent of energy in the range from 20 to 300 MeV/nucleon. A plot of enhancement factor vs. Z is presented which clearly demonstrates the preferential enhancement of abundances with increasing Z in one of the solar flares, where the nuclei reached such high energies that they must have escaped the corona fully stripped of electrons. Implications for theories of solar-flare acceleration of the nuclei are considered.

Multispectral histogram normalization contrast enhancement

A multispectral histogram normalization or decorrelation enhancement which achieves effective color composites by removing interband correlation is described. The enhancement procedure employs either linear or nonlinear transformations to equalize principal component variances. An additional rotation to any set of orthogonal coordinates is thus possible, while full histogram utilization is maintained by avoiding the reintroduction of correlation. For the three-dimensional case, the enhancement procedure may be implemented with a lookup table. An application of the enhancement to Landsat multispectral scanning imagery is presented.

Concentrator-enhanced photovoltaic arrays for deep space applications

The useful operational range of photovoltaic solar arrays has been limited to 1.5 AU (Mars orbit) due primarily to solar intensity constraints. Preliminary results indicate that the use of concentrator mirrors in conjunction with solar arrays can extend the practical operating range of photovoltaic space power sources to at least 9.5 AU (Saturn orbit). Various aspects of concentrator-enhanced photovoltaic arrays such as size, structure, thermal characteristics, intensity uniformity, pointing accuracy requirements, deployment methods, power performance and system mass are presented. Based on this information, concentrator-enhanced photovoltaic arrays are superior, with respect to power-to-mass and cost, to existing power sources used for deep space missions. The sensitivity of concentrator-enhanced solar arrays to particulate radiation was also examined for representative deep space missions. Results are presented which show that a radiation-degraded, deep space, concentrator-enhanced solar array's performance exceeds that of existing RTG power sources.

Evaluation of aircraft microwave data for locating zones for well stimulation and enhanced gas recovery

Imaging radar was evaluated as an adjunct to conventional petroleum exploration techniques, especially linear mapping. Linear features were mapped from several remote sensor data sources including stereo photography, enhanced LANDSAT imagery, SLAR radar imagery, enhanced SAR radar imagery, and SAR radar/LANDSAT combinations. Linear feature maps were compared with surface joint data, subsurface and geophysical data, and gas production in the Arkansas part of the Arkoma basin. The best LANDSAT enhanced product for linear detection was found to be a winter scene, band 7, uniform distribution stretch. Of the individual SAR data products, the VH (cross polarized) SAR radar mosaic provides for detection of most linears; however, none of the SAR enhancements is significantly better than the others. Radar/LANDSAT merges may provide better linear detection than a single sensor mapping mode, but because of operator variability, the results are inconclusive. Radar/LANDSAT combinations appear promising as an optimum linear mapping technique, if the advantages and disadvantages of each remote sensor are considered.

On the enhancement of the IMF magnitude during 1978-1979

The magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) exhibits an enhancement during 1978 to 1979 relative to all years back to 1963. It is shown that IMF magnitude variations over the 1966 to 1979 period represent the combined effect of variations in both the radial flux density of the IMF and the degree of spiraling of the IMG, consistent with the theoretical model of Parker. The 1978 to 1979 IMF magnitude enhancement is due to an enhancement of radial flux which was in turn related to an increase of magnetic flux leaving solar active regions. It is also shown that during the corotating stream dominated years 1973 to 1976, the IMF was less wound up than during other years, and that 1973 to 1974 were years of enhanced radial flux.

Shock-associated low-energy ion enhancements observed by Voyagers 1 and 2

Observations of shock-associated ion enhancements at energies of not less than 30 keV are presented from data gathered by Voyagers 1 and 2. Observations include examples of energetic storm particle events associated with flare-produced shocks and examples of corotating particle events (CPE) associated with forward and reverse shocks that bound corotating interaction regions in the outer heliosphere. Most of the CPE have recurrent double-peaked intensity enhancements showing little or no velocity dispersion at peak intensities, time durations of several days, and soft energy spectra extending up to 5 MeV/nucleon. The lowest energy ion enhancements are confined mainly downstream of the corotating interaction regions with the magnitude and duration of the upstream enhancements increasing with increasing ion energy. The observations are consistent with the dynamical and kinematical effects expected when low energy ions are accelerated at quasi-perpendicular shocks.

Enhanced growth of whistlers due to bunching of untrapped electrons

Man-made signals propagating in the whistler mode in the magnetoshere have been observed to be amplified and to trigger other VLF emissions in the absence of other detectable magnetospheric signals in ground-based recordings. The absence of other magnetospheric signals implies that the growth rate of the triggered wave is enhanced over background noise. It is shown that, for at least low amplitude triggering waves, the phase bunching of untrapped electrons can account for the observed enhanced growth. The phase bunching is initially produced by perturbations in the electron trajectories due to their interactions with the front of the wave. Due to the inhomogeneity of the geomagnetic field, the phase-bunched electrons are able to gyroresonantly interact with a later portion of the triggering wave. Because the electrons are phase bunched, the electrons can lose energy to the wave faster than phase-random electrons and are thereby able to produce enhanced growth. Plasma conditions for which this phase bunching is effective in producing enhanced growth are derived.

An analysis at mesospheric coherent-scatter power enhancements during solar flare events

Solar flares produce increases in coherent-scatter power from the mesosphere due to the increase in free electrons produced by X-ray photoionization. Thirteen such power enhancements were observed at Urbana. When such an enhancement occurs at an altitude containing a turbulence layer with constant strength, the relative enhancement of electon density is estimated from the enhancement in power. Such estimates of enchanced electron density are compared with estimates of the X-ray photoionization at that altitude, deduced from geostationary satellite measurements. It is found that possible types ion-chemical reaction scheme may be distinguished, and the nonflare ion-pair production function may be estimated. The type of ion-chemical scheme and the nonflare ion-production function are shown to depend on the solar zenith angle.

Color enhancement of highly correlated images. I - Decorrelation and HSI contrast stretches

Conventional enhancements for the color display of multispectral images are based on independent contrast modifications or 'stretches' of three input images. This approach is not effective if the image channels are highly correlated or if the image histograms are strongly bimodal or more complex. Any of several procedures that tend to 'stretch' color saturation while leaving hue unchanged may better utilize the full range of colors for the display of image information. Two conceptually different enhancements are discussed: the 'decorrelation stretch', based on principal-component (PC) analysis, and the 'stretch' of 'hue' - 'saturation' - intensity (HSI) transformed data. The PC transformation in scene-dependent, but the HSI transformation is invariant. Examples of images enhanced by conventional linear stretches, decorrelation stretch, and by stretches of HSI transformed data are compared. Schematic variation diagrams or two- and three-dimensional histograms are used to illustrate the 'decorrelation stretch' method and the effect of the different enhancements.

Enhanced biogenic emissions of nitric oxide and nitrous oxide following surface biomass burning

Recent measurements indicate significantly enhanced biogenic soil emissions of both nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O) following surface burning. These enhanced fluxes persisted for at least six months following the burn. Simultaneous measurements indicate enhanced levels of exchangeable ammonium in the soil following the burn. Biomass burning is known to be an instantaneous source of NO and N2O resulting from high-temperature combustion. Now it is found that biomass burning also results in significantly enhanced biogenic emissions of these gases, which persist for months following the burn.

Turbulence enhancement in free shear flows under multifrequency excitation

The interactions of multifrequency wave-packet with the background turbulence in a round jet are studied. The process explains the mechanisms governing the later stages of the laminar-turbulent transitions as well as the effect of multifrequency excitation on turbulent jets. In a multifrequency-excited jet, mixing enhancement was found to be a result of the turbulence enhancement rather than simply the amplification of forced wave components. The excitation waves pump energy from the mean flow to the turbulence, thus enhancing the latter. The high-frequency wave enhance the turbulence close to the jet exit, but the low-frequency waves are most effective further downstream.

A multiwavelength study of the Eridanus soft X-ray enhancement

We present soft X-ray, N(H), and IR maps of the Eridanus soft X-ray enhancement. Soft X-ray maps from the HEAO 1 A-2 LED experiment, processed with a maximum entropy method (MEM) algorithm, show that the enhancement consists of two distinct components: a large hook-shaped component and a small circular component at different temperatures. Both of these are located in 'holes' in the IR emission, and they correspond to N(H) features at very different velocities. The dust surrounding the X-ray enhancements appears to be associated with several high-latitude molecular clouds, which allow us to obtain a probable distance of about 130 pc to the near edge of the main enhancement. The total power emitted by the hot gas is then about 10 exp 35 to 10 exp 36 ergs/s. We consider alternative interpretations of these objects as adiabatic supernova remnants or as stellar wind bubbles and conclude that they are more likely to be stellar wind bubbles, possibly reheated by a SN explosion in the case of the main, hook-shaped object.
