Complete Equations of State for Cyclotetramethylene Tetranitramine

Complete equations of state for the volumetric deformation of the β-polymorph of cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine (β-HMX) have been derived from its Helmholtz free energy. Dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations were used to compute the dependence of the frequencies of the vibrational normal modes on specific volume. Here, the normal mode frequencies were used directly to generate both a tabular equation of state and an approximate model where the sum over normal mode frequencies is replaced by a set of five Debye models.

Trends in electrocatalytic activity and stability of transition-metal nitrides

Transition metal nitrides (TMNs) are a class of electrocatalyst support materials similar to transition metal carbides (TMCs) with the advantage of avoiding the issues arising from graphitic carbon surface deposits during synthesis. Inspired by previous studies suggesting that TMCs could be used to reduce Pt loading for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), this work explored the feasibility of TMN-supported Pt and Au as HER electrocatalysts. Here this study established a volcano-like trend between electrochemical HER activity and hydrogen-binding energy (HBE) calculated from density functional theory. The Pt/TiN and Au/TiN materials were used to extend knowledge from well-characterized thin films to powder catalysts. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements provided additional characterization of the Pt/TiN and Au/TiN catalysts under HER conditions. Trends in the electrochemical stability of TMNs were also investigated over a wide range of potentials and pH values, which can be used to guide future studies for TMN-supported electrocatalysts.

The effect of water vapor on surface oxygen exchange kinetics of thin film (La,Sr)(Co,Fe)O 3-δ

Oxygen reduction and transport in electrochemical applications are strongly affected by the reactant gas composition, including impurities such as water. Understanding the relationship between oxygen reactivity and humidity is key for attaining stability and high efficiency of solid oxide fuel cells, which are especially attractive for transportation applications as low emission power generation devices. Both short- and long-term effects of moisture have previously been associated with use of ambient air. To better understand these effects, we study oxygen exchange kinetics at the cathode surface and the cathode/electrolyte interface using La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) epitaxial thin films as a model-surface system. In situ synchrotron X-ray techniques evaluate the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics in response to environmental variables. The results suggest a clear enhancement of the ORR rate upon short term exposure of the perovskite-structured films to water. Finally, on the basis of these measurements, along with in situ X-ray characterization of Sr segregation and computational first-principles studies, we suggest a model for this increased ORR activity that may lead to further improvements by stabilizing active cathode surface configurations.

Polysulfide reduction and Li 2 S phase formation in the presence of lithium metal and solid electrolyte interphase layer

Lithium sulfur battery is an attractive next generation technology that can meet many demands of modern society. Unfortunately, the lithium sulfur battery faces unique issues related to the polysulfide shuttle effect, that is due to reduction products dissolving in the electrolyte and their subsequent reduction on the lithium metal electrode. This adds further problems to the already challenging needs of understanding and engineering a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer with desired properties. One of the most important SEI properties is its passivation of lithium metal which is critically important to the overall battery performance. Passivation is difficult to measure experimentally without the influence of many factors. This study reports an investigation of the reduction of the intermediate Li 2 S 8 over lithium already passivated with Li 2 O, Li 2 CO 3 , LiOH, LiF and Li 2 S along with exploration of Li 2 S 8 reduction over pristine lithium nanoclusters using first principles computational models. Significant formation of Li 2 S phase nucleation is found to stabilize the reduction products of the Li 2 S 8 . Here, the formation of Li 2 S is explored in-depth with lithium nanocluster-based models determining a 2 V potential increase for the reduction of polysulfides due to the formation of Li 2 S. This investigation demonstrates passivation effects of important SEI components including Li 2 S.

Graphene-supported single atom catalysts for high performance lithium-oxygen batteries

The optimal choice of d-block metals in single atom catalysts (SACs) is crucial for designing efficient electrocatalysts for activating the Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/ Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in lithiumoxygen batteries (LOBs). Herein, we used the Quantum Mechanics methods to understand the origin of reactivity for a series of 16 d-block metals supported on nitrogen-doped graphene as SACs for ORR and OER in LOBs. Based on the Gibbs free energy calculations, we found that among the 16 SACs investigated, Zn-SAC exhibits the highest electrochemical activity with the lowest overpotential of 0.17 V. Here we then used machine learning (ML) to develop an intrinsic descriptor, phi, that correlates the catalytic activity with electronic and chemical properties of the catalytic centers at the M-N 4 active site on graphene surface. We established a linear relationship between phi and the catalytic activity that provides guidance for designing efficient SACs for electrocatalysis in LOBs. To validate these predictions, we report electrochemical measurements showing that Zn-SAC exhibits an ultra-stable cyclability with reduced overpotentials over Mo-SAC and nitrogen-doped graphene (NG), confirming our theoretical prediction. This fundamental work provides a deep understanding on the rational design of efficient SACs for OER/ ORR in LOBs.

Thallium-based scintillators for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy: Ce 3+ - doped Tl 2 LaCl 5 and Tl 2 LaBr 5

In this paper we report on the crystallographic and scintillation properties of Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and Tl 2 LaBr 5 :Ce 3 + , two novel thallium-containing high-resolution scintillators for gamma-ray spectroscopy. Crystals of Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and Tl 2 LaBr 5 :Ce 3 + were grown by the Vertical Bridgman method up to 1-inch diameter and 1-inch long. Single crystals of Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and Tl 2 LaBr 5 :Ce 3 + belong to the orthorhombic system with space group 62 and have a density of 5.16 and 5.98 g/cm 3 , respectively. The scintillators show high light yields of up to 68,000 photons/MeV, excellent gamma-ray energy resolution of ≤ 3% at 662 keV, a fast scintillation decay, and a proportional response over a wide range of energies from 32 keV up to 1275 keV. Density Functional Theory calculations show that the Ce 3 + energy levels are inside the bandgap despite the smaller bandgap of Tl 2 LaCl 5 and Tl 2 LaBr 5 compared to K 2 LaCl 5 and K 2 LaBr 5 . Finally, a systematic Ce 3 + concentration study was performed for Tl 2 LaCl 5 :Ce 3 + and trends observed.

Iridate Li8IrO 6 : An Antiferromagnetic Insulator

In this work, a polycrystalline iridate Li 8 IrO 6 material was prepared via heating Li 2 O and IrO 2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li 8 IrO 6 adopts the nonpolar space group $R\bar{3}$ with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO 4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO 6 and LiO 6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c -axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir 4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li 8 IrO 6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment $μ_{\text{eff}}$ (Ir) = 1.73 $μ_{\text{B}}$ and insulating character indicate that Li 8 IrO 6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.

Formation of 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 during Thermochemical Reduction of 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 : Identification of a Polytype in the Ba(Ce,Mn)O 3 Family

The resurgence of interest in a hydrogen economy and the development of hydrogen-related technologies has initiated numerous research and development efforts aimed at making the generation, storage, and transportation of hydrogen more efficient and affordable. Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) is a process that potentially exhibits numerous benefits such as high reaction efficiencies, tunable thermodynamics, and continued performance over extended cycling. Although CeO 2 has been the de facto standard STCH material for many years, more recently 12R-Ba 4 CeMn 3 O 12 (BCM) has demonstrated enhanced hydrogen production at intermediate H 2 /H 2 O conditions compared to CeO 2 , making it a contender for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the thermo-reduction stability of 12R-BCM dictates the oxygen partial pressure (pO 2 ) and temperature conditions optimal for cycling. In this study, we identify the formation of a 6H-BCM polytype at high temperature and reducing conditions, experimentally and computationally, as a mechanism and pathway for 12R-BCM decomposition. 12R-BCM was synthesized with high purity and then controllably reduced using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) data is used to identify the formation of a 6H-Ba 3 Ce 0.75 Mn 2.25 O 9 (6H-BCM) polytype that is formed at 1350 degrees C under strongly reducing pO 2 . Density functional theory (DFT) total energy and defect calculations show a window of thermodynamic stability for the 6H-polytype consistent with the XRD results. These data provide the first evidence of the 6H-BCM polytype and could provide a mechanistic explanation for the superior water-splitting behaviors of 12R-BCM.

Polishing the Gold Standard: The Role of Orbital Choice in CCSD(T) Vibrational Frequency Prediction

While CCSD(T) with spin-restricted Hartree-Fock (RHF) orbitals has long been lauded for its ability to accurately describe closed-shell interactions, the performance of CCSD(T) on open-shell species is much more erratic, especially when using a spin-unrestricted HF (UHF) reference. Previous studies have shown improved treatment of open-shell systems when a non-HF set of molecular orbitals, like Brueckner or Kohn-Sham density functional theory (DFT) orbitals, is used as a reference. Inspired by the success of regularized orbital-optimized second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (κ-OOMP2) orbitals as reference orbitals for MP3, we investigate the use of κ-OOMP2 orbitals and various DFT orbitals as reference orbitals for CCSD(T) calculations of the corrected ground-state harmonic vibrational frequencies of a set of 36 closed-shell (29 neutrals, 6 cations, 1 anion) and 59 open-shell diatomic species (38 neutrals, 15 cations, 6 anions). The aug-cc-pwCVTZ basis set is used for all calculations. The use of κ-OOMP2 orbitals in this context alleviates difficult cases observed for both UHF orbitals and OOMP2 orbitals. Removing two multireference systems and 12 systems with ambiguous experimental data leaves a pruned data set. Overall performance on the pruned data set highlights CCSD(T) with a B97 orbital reference (CCSD(T):B97), CCSD(T) with a κ-OOMP2 orbital reference (CCSD(T):κ-OOMP2), and CCSD(T) with a B97M-rV orbital reference (CCSD(T):B97M-rV) with RMSDs of 8.48 cm -1 , and 8.50 cm -1 , and 8.75 cm -1 respectively, outperforming CCSD(T):UHF by nearly a factor of 5. Moreover, the performance on the closed- and open-shell subsets shows these methods are able to treat open-shell and closed-shell systems with comparable accuracy and robustness. CCSD(T) with RHF orbitals is seen to improve upon UHF for the closed-shell species, while spatial symmetry breaking in a number of restricted open-shell HF (ROHF) references leads CCSD(T) with ROHF reference orbitals to exhibit the poorest statistical performance of all methods surveyed for open-shell species. The use of κ-OOMP2 orbitals has also proven useful in diagnosing multireference character that can hinder the reliability of CCSD(T).

Semi-Automated Creation of Density Functional Tight Binding Models through Leveraging Chebyshev Polynomial-Based Force Fields

Density functional tight binding (DFTB) is an attractive method for accelerated quantum simulations of condensed matter due to its enhanced computational efficiency over standard density functional theory (DFT) approaches. However, DFTB models can be challenging to determine for individual systems of interest, especially for metallic and interfacial systems where different bonding arrangements can lead to significant changes in electronic states. In this regard, we have created a rapid-screening approach for determining systematically improvable DFTB interaction potentials that can yield transferable models for a variety of conditions. Our method leverages a recent reactive molecular dynamics force field where many-body interactions are represented by linear combinations of Chebyshev polynomials. This allows for the efficient creation of multi-center representations with relative ease, requiring only a small investment in initial DFT calculations. Here, we have focused our workflow on TiH 2 as a model system and show that a relatively small training set based on unit-cell-sized calculations yields a model accurate for both bulk and surface properties. Our approach is easy to implement and can yield reliable DFTB models over a broad range of thermodynamic conditions, where physical and chemical properties can be difficult to interrogate directly and there is historically a significant reliance on theoretical approaches for interpretation and validation of experimental results.

The Reaction Rates of Amidogen and Ammonia with Nitrous Oxide: Implications for Combustion Mechanisms

Pulsed laser photolysis experiments with laser-induced fluorescence detection of NH 2 set an upper limit to the rate constant for reaction with N 2 O of k < 1 × 10 −15 cm 3 molecule −1 s −1 at 513 K. Computations were based on geometries and anharmonic frequency analysis (B2PLYP-D3/cc-pVTZ) followed by coupled cluster calculations extrapolated to the infinite basis set limit, with corrections for core−valence electron correlation, scalar relativistic effects, and correlation up to CCSDT(Q). Species that showed multireference character were quantified with MRCI(7,7)+Q/cc-pVTZ theory. Rate constants were obtained for the dominant product channel H 2 NN + NO, along with HN 3 + OH, H 2 NO + N 2 , NNH + HNO, ON(NH) 2 and HNNH + NO. The last channel is slow even at 2500 K, contrary to an early empirical estimate and confirming recent suggestions. Modeling of literature experiments on oxidation of NH 3 by N 2 O shows that all channels are too slow to make a significant impact on the loss of N 2 O in ammonia flames. Similarly, the direct NH 3 + N 2 O reaction is found to be negligibly slow.
