Full-potential KKR within the removed-sphere method: A practical and accurate solution to the Poisson equation

Here an efficient and accurate generalization of the removed-sphere method (RSM) to solve the Poisson equation for total charge density in a solid with space-filling convex Voronoi polyhedra (VPs) and any symmetry is presented. The generalized RSM avoids the use of multipoles and VP shape functions for cellular integrals, which have associated ill-convergent large, double-internal L sums in spherical-harmonic expansions, so that fast convergence in single-L sums is reached. Our RSM adopts full Ewald formulation to work for all configurations or when symmetry breaking occurs, such as for atomic displacements or elastic constant calculations. The structure-dependent coefficients A L that define RSM can be calculated once for a fixed structure and speed up the whole self-consistent-field procedure. The accuracy and rapid convergence properties are confirmed using two analytic models, including the Coulomb potential and energy. We then implement the full-potential RSM using the Green's function Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) method for real applications and compare the results with other first-principle methods and experimental data, showing that they are equally as accurate.

Steady-state junction current distribution in p-n GaN diodes measured using low-energy electron microscopy (LEEM)

Here, we report on the measurement of the lateral distribution of the junction current of an electrical biased p-n GaN diode by electron emission microscopy using a low-energy electron microscope. The vacuum level at the surface of the diode was lowered by deposition of cesium to achieve negative electron affinity, allowing overflow electrons at the surface of the biased diodes to be emitted and their spatial distribution imaged. The results were compared to the literature, and a good match with analytical solutions by Joyce and Wemple was obtained.

Hund's metal physics: From SrNiO 2 to LaNiO 2

We study the normal state electronic structure of the recently discovered infinite-layer nickelate superconductor, Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 , using density functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory calculations. Starting with the multiorbital compound SrNiO 2 , our calculations show that despite large charge-carrier doping from SrNiO 2 to LaNiO 2 , the Ni-3d total occupancy is barely changed due to the decreased hybridization with the occupied oxygen-2p states and increased hybridization with the unoccupied La-5d states. Thus, using SrNiO 2 as a reference, La 1-x Sr x NiO 2 is naturally and conclusively found to be a multiorbital electronic system with characteristic Hund's metal behaviors, such as metallicity, the importance of high-spin configurations, tendency towards orbital differentiation, and the absence of magnetism in regimes which are ordered according to static mean-field theories. Finally, our results are in good agreement with the existing spectroscopic studies and make an essential step towards an understanding of the electronic structures of Nd 1-x Sr x NiO 2 .

Measurements of nonequilibrium interatomic forces using time-domain x-ray scattering

Here, we demonstrate an experimental approach to determining the excited-state interatomic forces using femtosecond x-ray pulses from an x-ray free-electron laser. We determine experimentally the excited-state interatomic forces that connect photoexcited carriers to the nonequilibrium lattice dynamics in the prototypical Peierls-distorted material, bismuth. The forces are obtained by a constrained least-squares fit of a pairwise interatomic force model to the excited-state phonon dispersion relation as measured by the time- and momentum-resolved x-ray diffuse scattering. We find that photoexcited carriers weaken predominantly the nearest-neighbor forces, which drives the measured softening of the transverse acoustic modes throughout the Brillouin zone as well as the zone-center A 1g optical mode. This demonstrates a bond-selective approach to measuring electron-phonon coupling relevant to a broad range of photoinduced phase transitions and transient light-driven states in quantum materials.

High spin polarization in the disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeMnVGa

Here in this paper, we report the successful synthesis of a Fe-based highly spin-polarized quaternary Heusler alloy FeMnVGa and its structural, magnetic, and transport properties probed through different experimental methods and theoretical techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on different types of structures reveal that the structure with Ga at 4a, V at 4b, Mn at 4c, and Fe at 4d (space group F$\bar{4}$3m) possess minimum energy among all the ordered variants. Ab initio simulations in the most stable ordered structure show that the compound is a ferromagnet having a large spin-polarization (89.9%). Neutron diffraction reveals that the compound crystallizes in disordered type-2 structure (space group Fm$\bar{3}$m) in which Ga occupies at 4a, V 4b and Fe/Mn occupy 4c/4d sites with 50:50 proportions. The structural disorder is further confirmed by x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectrometry results, and DFT calculations. Magnetization studies suggest that the compound orders ferromagnetically below T C ~ 293 K and the saturation magnetization follows the Slater-Pauling rule. Mössbauer spectrometry, along with neutron diffraction, suggest that Mn is the major contributor to the total magnetism in the compound, consistent with the theoretical calculations, which also indicates that spin polarization remains high (81.3%), even in the presence of such large atomic disorder. The robustness of the half-metallic ferromagnetic (HMF) property in the presence of disorder is a quite unique characteristic over other reported HMF in literature and makes this compound quite promising for spintronics applications.

Magnetic interactions and excitations in SrMnSb 2

The magnetic interactions in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) Dirac semimetal candidate SrMnSb 2 are investigated using ab initio linear response theory and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Our calculations reveal that the first two nearest in-plane couplings (J 1 and J 2 ) are both AFM in nature, indicating a significant degree of spin frustration, which aligns with experimental observations. The orbital resolution of exchange interactions shows that J 1 and J 2 are dominated by direct and superexchange, respectively. In a broader context, a rigid-band model suggests that electron doping fills the minority spin channel and results in a decrease in the AFM coupling strength for both J 1 and J 2 . To better compare with INS measurements, we calculate the spin-wave spectra within a linear spin-wave theory, utilizing the computed exchange parameters. Although the calculated spin-wave spectra somewhat overestimate the magnon bandwidth, they exhibit overall good agreement with measurements from INS experiments.

Electronic structure, self-doping, and superconducting instability in the alternating single-layer trilayer stacking nickelates La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7

Motivated by the recently proposed alternating single-layer trilayer stacking structure for the nickelate La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 , we comprehensively study this system using ab initio and random-phase approximation techniques. Here, our analysis unveils similarities between this novel La 3⁢ Ni 2 ⁢O 7 structure and other Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate superconductors, such as a similar charge-transfer gap value and orbital-selective behavior of the eg orbitals. Pressure primarily increases the bandwidths of the Ni e g bands, suggesting an enhancement of the itinerant properties of those e g states. By changing the cell volume ratio V/V 0 from 0.9 to 1.10, we found that the bilayer structure in La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 always has lower energy than the single-layer trilayer stacking La 3 ⁢Ni 2 ⁢O 7 . In addition, we observe a “self-doping” effect (compared to the average 1.5 electrons per eg orbital per site of the entire structure) from the trilayer to the single-layer sublattices and this effect will be enhanced by overall electron doping. Moreover, we find a leading d x 2 -y 2 -wave pairing state that is restricted to the single layer. Because the effective coupling between the single layers is very weak, due to the nonsuperconducting trilayer in-between, this suggests that the superconducting transition temperature T c in this structure should be much lower than in the bilayer structure.

Effect of non-stoichiometry and pressure on superconductivity in topological semimetal PdTe

Research into topological superconductivity has been at the forefront of condensed matter physics due to both fundamental interest and potential applications in quantum computing. PdTe, is such a superconductor with a transition temperature T c ∼ 4.5 K and exhibits a nontrivial topological electronic structure, thus receiving significant attention. We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the pressure effect on superconductivity by applying chemical non-stoichiometry and hydrostatic pressure. While T c decreases with increasing pressure through electrical resistivity, magnetization, and specific heat measurements, chemical pressure has a distinct impact from hydrostatic pressure, which could increase T c by creating negative pressure via non-stoichiometric Pd x Te with x > 1. Accompanied with this is a sign change of the Hall coefficient from negative at x < 1 to positive at x > 1. This indicates extreme sensitivity of the electronic structure to chemical non-stoichiometry, which occurs as a Pd vacancy for x < 1 and Pd interstitial for x > 1.

Ferroelectrics everywhere: Ferroelectricity in magnesium substituted zinc oxide thin films

We demonstrate ferroelectricity in Mg-substituted ZnO thin films with the wurtzite structure. Zn 1–x Mg x O films are grown by dual-cathode reactive magnetron sputtering on (111)-Pt // (0001)-Al 2 O 3 substrates at temperatures ranging from 26 to 200 °C for compositions spanning from x = 0 to x = 0.37. X-ray diffraction indicates a decrease in the c-lattice parameter and an increase in the a-lattice parameter with increasing Mg content, resulting in a nearly constant c/a axial ratio of 1.595 over this composition range. Transmission electron microscopy studies show abrupt interfaces between Zn 1–x Mg x O films and the Pt electrode. When prepared at pO 2 = 0.025, film surfaces are populated by abnormally oriented grains as measured by atomic force microscopy for Mg concentrations >29%. Raising pO 2 to 0.25 eliminates the misoriented grains. Optical measurements show increasing bandgap values with increasing Mg content. When prepared on a 200 °C substrate, films display ferroelectric switching with remanent polarizations exceeding 100 μC cm –2 and coercive fields below 3 MVcm –1 when the Mg content is between ~30% and ~7%. Substrate temperature can be lowered to ambient conditions, and when doing so, capacitor stacks show only minor sacrifices to crystal orientation and nearly identical remanent polarization values; however, coercive fields drop below 2 MV/cm. Using ambient temperature deposition, we demonstrate ferroelectric capacitor stacks integrated directly with polymer substrate surfaces.

Nuclear quantum effects on the quasiparticle properties of the chloride anion aqueous solution within the GW approximation

Photoelectron spectroscopy experiments in ionic solutions reveal important electronic structure information, in which the interaction between hydrated ions and water solvent can be inferred. Based on many-body perturbation theory with GW approximation, we theoretically compute the quasiparticle electronic structure of chloride anion solution, which is modeled by path-integral abinitio molecular dynamics simulation by taking account the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs). The electronic levels of hydrated anion as well as water are determined and compared with the recent experimental photoelectron spectra. It is found that NQEs improve the agreement between theoretical prediction and experiment because NQEs effectively weaken the hybridization of the between the Cl – anion and water. Furthermore, our study indicates that NQEs plays a small but non-negligible role in predicting the electronic structure of the aqueous solvation of ions of the Hofmeister series.

Probing putative orbital differentiation effects via Eu 2+ spin dynamics in Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2

Here, in this work, we report x-ray powder diffraction, elemental analysis, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) in single crystals of Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2 . We observed a breakdown of the previously reported scaling between the Eu 2+ Korringa relaxation rate obtained from ESR and the spin density wave temperature evolution for Sr-rich samples. This result suggests a distinct evolution of the orbital differentiation of the Fe 3d bands along the Sr-based series when compared to the Ba counterpart. We argue that this difference is related to a larger splitting between the structural (tetragonal-to-orthorhombic) and the Fe-driven spin density wave transitions induced by Eu doping in this series. In fact, our results indicate that the two transitions follow an opposite x-Eu dependence for Sr-concentrated samples. Our work shows that Sr 1-x Eu x Fe 2 As 2 series and the comparison with their Ba-based counterparts are exciting platforms to be explored for understanding the interplay among orbital differentiation, magnetism, and structural distortions in the iron pnictides

Hourglass-type bulk Ni 3 d band and Ce 4 f Kondo resonance states in the potential topological Kondo semimetal CeNiSn via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of CeNiSn, which is a potential topological Kondo insulator and a Dirac nodal-loop semimetal, has been investigated by employing temperature (T) dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The Fermi surfaces (FSs) and the band structures of CeNiSn for three orthogonal crystallographic planes are measured, in which both the very dispersive bands and the flat bands are observed, having mainly the Ni 3d character and the Ce 4f character, respectively. The measured FSs and ARPES bands agree reasonably well with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Fermi-edge (E F ) photon energy (hν) map along k b (=k (010) ) shows that the metallic E F -crossing states on the (010) surface have the three-dimensional character, suggesting that the observed E F -crossing metallic states do not correspond to the topological surface states of the two-dimensional character. On the other hand, albeit weak, the features of the hourglass-type bulk band crossings are observed along SXS, with the energies and the slopes being similar to those predicted by the DFT calculations, supporting the Dirac semimetallic nature of CeNiSn. In T-dependent ARPES, the Ce 4f Kondo resonance states are clearly revealed at low T, which become much suppressed above ~80 K. This feature is consistent with the Kondo temperature of CeNiSn, estimated from its ρ(T) data. This work demonstrates the importance of the coherent Kondo states in determining the topological properties of CeNiSn.

Single-crystalline orthorhombic GdAlGe as a rare-earth magnetic Dirac nodal-line metal

Crystal engineering is a method for discovering new quantum materials and phases, which may be achieved using external pressure or strain. Chemical pressure is unique in that it generates internal pressure perpetually to the lattice. As an example, GdAlSi from the rare-earth (𝑅) 𝑅⁢Al⁢𝑋 (𝑋=Si or Ge) family of Weyl semimetals is considered. Replacing Si with the larger isovalent element Ge creates sufficiently large chemical pressure to induce a structural transition from the tetragonal structure of GdAlSi, compatible with a Weyl semimetallic state, to an orthorhombic phase in GdAlGe, resulting in an inversion-symmetry-protected nodal-line metal. We find that GdAlGe hosts an antiferromagnetic ground state with two successive orderings, at 𝑇 N ⁢1=35K and 𝑇 N ⁢2=30K. In-plane isothermal magnetization shows a magnetic field induced metamagnetic transition at 6.2 T for 2 K. Furthermore, electron-hole compensation gives rise to a large magnetoresistance of ∼100% at 2 K and 14 T. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and density functional theory calculations reveal a Dirac-like linear band dispersion over an exceptionally large energy range of ∼1.5eV with a high Fermi velocity of ∼10 6 m/s, a rare feature not observed in any magnetic topological materials.

Electric field dependence of nanoscale cathodoluminescence inside Cr doped β-Ga 2 O 3 interfaces

Chromium (Cr) is a common impurity in β-Ga 2 O 3 crystals, where its characteristic R1 and R2 luminescence lines are susceptible to both the host crystal field and externally applied fields. Here, in this work, we demonstrate that the Cr cathodoluminescence (CL) quenches toward the bulk of the crystal but enhances with applied reverse bias, reflecting the effect of free carrier depletion with increasing electric field. Furthermore, we illustrate that the R1/R2 CL intensity ratio, measured as the integrated area ratio of R1 to R2, can be used as a direct probe of the electric field in a Ni-β-Ga 2 O 3 : Cr Schottky diode. This optical calibration method provides a complementary approach to conventional C–V and I–V measurements for determining electric field strength in the depletion region of β-Ga 2 O 3 -based Schottky diodes and can be extended to other semiconductors and multilayer device structures.

Hysteretic Responses of Skyrmion Lattices to Electric Fields in Magnetoelectric Cu 2 OSeO 3

Electric field control of topologically nontrivial magnetic textures, such as skyrmions, provides a paradigm shift for future spintronics beyond current silicon-based technology. While significant progress has been made by X-ray and neutron scattering studies, direct observation of such nanoscale spin structures and their dynamics driven by external electric fields remains a challenge to understand underlying mechanisms and harness functionalities. Here, using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy combined with in situ electric and magnetic fields at liquid helium temperatures, we report the crystallographic-orientation dependent skyrmion responses to electric fields in thin slabs of magnetoelectric Cu 2 OSeO 3 . We show electric fields not only stabilize the hexagonally packed skyrmion lattices in the entire sample in a hysteretic manner but also induce the rotation of their reciprocal vector discretely by 30°. Furthermore, the nonvolatile and energy-efficient skyrmion-lattice control by electric fields demonstrated in this work provides an important foundation for designing skyrmion-based qubits and memory devices.

Ferro-ionic states and domains morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles

Unique polar properties of nanoscale hafnia-zirconia oxides (Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 ) are of great interest for condensed matter physics, nanophysics, and advanced applications. These properties are connected (at least partially) to the ionic–electronic and electrochemical phenomena at the surface, interfaces, and/or internal grain boundaries. Here, we calculated the phase diagrams, dielectric permittivity, spontaneous polar, and antipolar ordering, as well as the domain structure morphology in Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 nanoparticles covered by ionic–electronic charge originating from surface electrochemical adsorption. We revealed that the ferro-ionic coupling supports the polar long-range order in nanoscale Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 , induces, and/or enlarges the stability region of the labyrinthine domains toward smaller sizes and smaller environmental dielectric constant at low concentrations of the surface ions. The ferro-ionic coupling causes the transition to the single-domain ferro-ionic state at high concentrations of the surface ions. We predict that the labyrinthine domain states, being multiple-degenerated, may significantly affect the emergence of the negative differential capacitance state in the nanograined/nanocrystalline Hf x Zr 1–x O 2 films.

Origin of insulating and nonferromagnetic SrRuO 3 monolayers

The electro-magnetic properties of ultrathin epitaxial ruthenate films have long been the subject of debate. Here we combine experimental with theoretical investigations of (SrTiO 3 ) 5 -(SrRuO 3 ) n -(SrTiO 3 ) 5 (STO 5 -SRO n -STO 5 ) heterostructures with n = 1 and 2 unit cells, including extensive atomic-resolution scanning-transmission-electron-microscopy imaging, electron-energy-loss-spectroscopy chemical mapping, as well as transport and magneto-transport measurements. The experimental data demonstrate that the STO 5 -SRO 2 -STO 5 heterostructure is nearly stoichiometric, metallic, and ferromagnetic with T C ~ 128 K, even though it lacks the characteristic bulk-SRO octahedral tilts and matches the cubic STO structure. In contrast, the STO 5 -SRO 1 -STO 5 heterostructure features Ru-Ti intermixing in the RuO 2 layer, also without octahedral tilts, but is accompanied by a loss of metallicity and ferromagnetism. Density-functional-theory calculations show that stoichiometric n = 1 and n = 2 heterostructures are metallic and ferromagnetic with no octahedral tilts, while non-stoichiometry in the Ru sublattice in the n = 1 case opens an energy gap and induces antiferromagnetic ordering. Furthermore, the results indicate that the observed non-stoichiometry is the cause of the observed loss of metallicity and ferromagnetism in the n = 1 case.
