Design and Analysis of Subscale and Full-Scale Buckling-Critical Cylinders for Launch Vehicle Technology Development

NASA s Shell Buckling Knockdown Factor (SBKF) project has the goal of developing new analysis-based shell buckling design factors (knockdown factors) and design and analysis technologies for launch vehicle structures. Preliminary design studies indicate that implementation of these new knockdown factors can enable significant reductions in mass and mass-growth in these vehicles. However, in order to validate any new analysis-based design data or methods, a series of carefully designed and executed structural tests are required at both the subscale and full-scale levels. This paper describes the design and analysis of three different orthogrid-stiffeNed metallic cylindrical-shell test articles. Two of the test articles are 8-ft-diameter, 6-ft-long test articles, and one test article is a 27.5-ft-diameter, 20-ft-long Space Shuttle External Tank-derived test article.

Buckling Analysis for Stiffened Anisotropic Circular Cylinders Based on Sanders Nonlinear Shell Theory

Nonlinear and bifurcation buckling equations for elastic, stiffened, geometrically perfect, right-circular cylindrical, anisotropic shells subjected to combined loads are presented that are based on Sanders' shell theory. Based on these equations, a three-parameter approximate Rayleigh-Ritz solution and a classical solution to the buckling problem are presented for cylinders with simply supported edges. Extensive comparisons of results obtained from these solutions with published results are also presented for a wide range of cylinder constructions. These comparisons include laminated-composite cylinders with a wide variety of shell-wall orthotropies and anisotropies. Numerous results are also given that show the discrepancies between the results obtained by using Donnell's equations and variants of Sanders' equations. For some cases, nondimensional parameters are identified and "master" curves are presented that facilitate the concise representation of results.

Buckling tests of light-metal tubes

I will attempt to determine mathematically the buckling-strength curves of various centrally loaded light-metal tubes which exhibit conspicuous differences of behavior under compressive loads. For this purpose I will employ Von Karman's method, after adapting it to special conditions.

ON THE BUCKLING OF THIN ELASTIC SHELLS

The differential equations which must be solved to predict the buckling load are reviewed. The different possible physical interpretations of these equations are discussed.

BUCKLING OF INITIALLY IMPERFECT AXIALLY COMPRESSED CYLINDRICAL SHELLS

The effects of imperfections on the buckling strength of pressurized cylinders under axial compression are studied. The imperfection factor is considered in the finite-deflection compatibility equation, as well as in the equilibrium equation. A new relation to express the imperfection as an explicit exponential function of pressure and radius thickness ratio is proposed. A method for finding the exponential function is described, and the solution for the critical stress is found in a fairly simple form. The relation of decrease of stability with respect to magnitude of imperfections if found.

THERMAL BUCKLING OF CYLINDERS

Several theoretical and experimental investigations on the buckling of cylinders due to both axial and circumferential thermal stresses are reviewed. Differences that exist among the various results are discussed and areas of future work are indicated.

Buckling of Orthotropic and Stiffened Conical Shells

Donnell type stability equations for thin circular orthotropic conical shells are presented and solved for external pressure, axial compression and combined loading. The solution is likewise applied to stiffened conical shells. Correlation with equivalent cylindrical shells yields a simple approximate stability analysis for orthotropic or ring-stiffened conical shells under hydrostatic pressure. The general instability of stiffened conical shells under hydrostatic pressure is also analysed by a more accurate approach. Preliminary experimental results for buckling of ring-stiffened conical shells under hydrostatic pressure are presented and discussed.
