Energetic particle activity at 5-min and 10-s time resolution in the magnetotail and its relation to auroral activity

The paper examines several energetic particle bursts associated with substorm events in the magnetotail using data from the Imp 7 and 8 spacecraft experiments. Individual proton and electron bursts observed by the spacecraft do not always coincide nor does magnetotail activity correlate strongly with auroral activity on time scales less than 1 hr. The pitch angle distributions were determined with a time resolution of 10 s by combining magnetic field and particle measurements on Imp 8; during intense particle bursts the 0.3-MeV protons exhibit unidirectional or bidirectional anisotropies along the magnetic field. The data suggest the presence of small localized acceleration regions in the magnetotail observable when magnetically connected to the spacecraft; little evidence is found for a single neutral line extending across the width of the magnetotail.

Current and projected use of carbon composites in United States aircraft

Carbon composite materials are finding limited use in both civil and military aircraft structures to exploit their weight saving potential for improved performance or fuel efficiency. Since these needs are growing, and a manufacturing cost savings potential is also recognized, wider use of composites in the near future may be expected. Carbon composites generally involve fiber volume fractions in excess of 60 percent in a variety of orthotropic sandwich or solid laminates. Bidirectional woven carbon cloth, common in recently designed structure, may provide higher, more uniform laminate conductivities than tape.

MPS Solidification Model. Volume 2: Operating guide and software documentation for the unsteady model

The operation of solidification Model 2 is described and documentation of the software associated with the model is provided. Model 2 calculates the macrosegregation in a rectangular ingot of a binary alloy as a result of unsteady horizontal axisymmetric bidirectional solidification. The solidification program allows interactive modification of calculation parameters as well as selection of graphical and tabular output. In batch mode, parameter values are input in card image form and output consists of printed tables of solidification functions. The operational aspects of Model 2 that differ substantially from Model 1 are described. The global flow diagrams and data structures of Model 2 are included. The primary program documentation is the code itself.

On the use of off-nadir pointing for increased temporal resolution of Earth observing satellite systems

The change in radiance expected at a satellite in a LANDSAT type orbit by pointing the sensor across track was examined with simulated data. The simulation incorporated the bidirectional reflectance distribution function of a spherical geometry grass canopy and scattering under clear, light haze and heavy haze atmospheric conditions. The results indicate that if the sensor pointed up to + or - 37 deg off nadir (up to three tracks east and west) through a clear atmosphere, between 50% and 75% of the orbital path between 60 deg N and 60 deg S would have two or more off-nadir views within + or - 5% of nadir. Although increased atmospheric scattering causes large variations in across track radiance, it appears possible, using various combinations of views depending on atmospheric conditions, that at least two views could be obtained with radiances within + or - 5% of each other over atmospheric visibilities from 23 km to 4 km.

Advanced dc motor controller for battery-powered electric vehicles

A motor generation set is connected to run from the dc source and generate a voltage in the traction motor armature circuit that normally opposes the source voltage. The functional feasibility of the concept is demonstrated with tests on a Proof of Principle System. An analog computer simulation is developed, validated with the results of the tests, applied to predict the performance of a full scale Functional Model dc Controller. The results indicate high efficiencies over wide operating ranges and exceptional recovery of regenerated energy. The new machine integrates both motor and generator on a single two bearing shaft. The control strategy produces a controlled bidirectional plus or minus 48 volts dc output from the generator permitting full control of a 96 volt dc traction motor from a 48 volt battery, was designed to control a 20 hp traction motor. The controller weighs 63.5 kg (140 lb.) and has a peak efficiency of 90% in random driving modes and 96% during the SAE J 227a/D driving cycle.

On the angular variation of solar reflectance of snow

Spectral and integrated solar reflectance of nonhomogeneous snowpacks are derived assuming surface reflection of direct radiation and subsurface multiple scattering. For surface reflection, a bidirectional reflectance distribution function derived for an isotropic Gaussian faceted surface is considered, and for subsurface multiple scattering an approximate solution of the radiative transfer equation is studied. Solar radiation incident on the snowpack is decomposed into direct and atmospherically scattered radiation. Spectral attenuation coefficients of ozone, carbon dioxide, water vapor, aerosol, and molecular scattering are included in the calculation of incident solar radiation. Illustrative numerical results are given for a case of North American winter atmospheric condition. The calculated dependence of spectrally integrated directional reflectance (or albedo) on solar elevation is in qualitative agreement with available observations.

Bi-directional streaming of solar wind electrons greater than 80 eV - ISEE evidence for a closed-field structure within the driver gas of an interplanetary shock

In near time coincidence with the arrival of helium enriched plasma driving the shock wave disturbance of November 12-13, 1978, strong bi-directional streaming of solar wind electrons greater than about 80 eV was observed with Los Alamos instrumentation on ISEE 3. The streaming persisted for many hours simultaneously parallel and anti-parallel to the interplanetary magnetic field which was directed roughly perpendicular to the sun-satellite line. This example of bidirectional streaming cannot be explained by field line connection to the earth's bow shock or the outward propagating interplanetary shock which passed ISEE 3 approximately 16 hours earlier. The event is explained if the local interplanetary field was a part of a magnetic bottle rooted at the sun or a disconnected loop propagating outward.

Modeling the effects of various radiant transfers in mountainous terrain on sensor response

A model is developed for the study of remote sensing spectral data problems encountered in mountainous terrain, where slope orientation with respect to sources of incident radiation must be considered for accurate classification of multispectral data. The model simulates the effects of solar, sky and adjacent slope irradiance fluxes and the bidirectional reflectance properties of the target surface on sensor response for various slope orientations. The errors associated with two practical techniques used to account for topographic effects on sensor response were evaluated in light of the model, and it was found that the simple cosine correction of the direct solar source showed reflectance errors greater than 11% while the technique considering both direct solar and diffuse sky sources was 50% more accurate.

The albedo of snow for partially cloudy skies

The albedo of snow is defined as the ratio of reflected to incident solar energy, and it is an important parameter in the earth's radiation budget analysis and in the study of snowpack's thermal conditions. An approximate model for calculating the incident spectral flux for partially cloudy skies is presented. The input parameters for the calculation are atmospheric precipitable water, turbidity, ozone content, surface pressure, the optical thickness of clouds, and the grain size of snow crystals. The spectral snow reflectance model considers both specular surface reflection and volumetric multiple scattering. The surface reflection is calculated by using a crystal-shape-dependent bidirectional reflectance distribution function; the volumetric multiple scattering is calculated by using a crystal-size-dependent approximate solution in the radiative transfer equation. The model yields spectral and integrated solar flux and snow reflectance as a function of solar elevation and fractional cloud-cover. The illustrative insolation and albedo values were obtained from spectral reflectance and incident flux for representative parameters of Antarctic coastal regions. A simple relationship between grain size and the overcast albedo was obtained. For a set of grain size and shape, the albedo as a function of solar elevation and fractional cloud cover was tabulated.

Simulated directional radiances of vegetation from satellite platforms

A computer modeling and simulation investigated the effects of off-nadir viewing, canopy geometry and density, solar zenith angle, and atmospheric conditions on the radiance of several vegetated targets. Effects on the normalized difference (ND) index were also investigated, and two wavelengths of 0.68 and 0.80 micron were simulated at nine sensor zenith angles, five sensor azimuths, and nine solar zenith angles. Seven canopies of low, medium, and high densities were observed, and bidirectional reflectance functions of other canopies were discussed. A modified Turner's (1974) atmospheric radiative transfer model was used for 2300 simulation runs. Off-nadir viewing effects were more pronounced in the red than the infrared, and the variability was found to be a function of canopy geometry. The ND index eliminated much of the variability seen in the individual bands, while the overall variability decreased with increasing biomass, and increased with increasing solar zenith angles.

Spectral properties /0.04 to 0.75 microns/ of soils exposed at the Viking 1 landing site

The bidirectional reflectance and photometric function (Hapke, 1981) was determined for seven patches of soil located near the Viking Lander 1 spacecraft. The soil photometric function has a prominent opposition effect in addition to a phase function that is strongly backscattering. The ratio of reflectances at a 1 deg phase angle to that at a 10 deg phase angle averages 1.25, 1.24, and 1.19 for blue, green, and red wavelengths respectively. The photometric function has a wavelength dependence, which causes color ratios to vary by up to 33% as a function of phase angle. Estimates of soil reflectance at a 5 deg phase angle averaged over the blue and green passbands of the Viking Lander cameras are 0.11 and 0.17, respectively, while estimates over the red channel range from 0.30 to 0.39. Brightness and color variations within the soil can be correlated with particle size, finer-grained soil being brighter and redder than coarser-grained soil. Lander soils, homogeneous in nature, are typical of brighter soils covering a large portion of the Martian surface.

Design and implementation of a telecommunication interface for the TAATM/TCV real-time experiment

The traffic situation display experiment of the terminal configured vehicle (TCV) research program requires a bidirectional data communications tie line between an computer complex. The tie line is used in a real time environment on the CYBER 175 computer by the terminal area air traffic model (TAATM) simulation program. Aircraft position data are processed by TAATM with the resultant output sent to the facility for the generation of air traffic situation displays which are transmitted to a research aircraft.

Thematic mapper performance

The thematic mapper primarily and its difference from MSS is reviewed. The TM has 30 meter resolution and the MSS has 80 meter resolution. This provides on agriculture an ability to accurately classify 10 acre fields with the TM versus 70 acre fields with the MSS data. There are six reflected light bands in the thematic mapper. Two bands are a new spectral region out in the IR, the shortwave IR region, as opposed to MSS's four reflected light bands. Four thematic mapper reflected light bands in the visible portion of the spectrum are designated to enhance the classification capability. The TM has better signal-to-noise ratio performance and radiometric sensitivity. The scan efficiency is increased through the use of bidirectional scanning, which gives a scan efficiency of 85% versus 45% with the multispectral scanner and more detectors per band. Greater encoding resolution is obtained in the multiplexer, 8 bit resolution versus 6 bits for MSS.

BRDF measurements of sunshield and baffle materials for the IRAS telescope

Measurements of the far-infrared bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDF) of four samples of Martin Black coating and one sample of gold coated aluminum from the telescope to be flown on the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) are presented. At incidence angles near 35 deg Martin Black is a diffuse reflector at wavelengths as long as 36 microns. The gold coated aluminum sample from the IRAS sunshield has a visible grain which causes a strong diffraction enhancement of the BRDF at large nonspecular angles. This enhancement from the sunshield will increase the stray light level inside the telescope.

Regionally applicable angular reflectance models

Determination of the angular variation of the reflected radiance field in order to infer the reflected component of the Earth radiation budget from medium or narrow field of view radiometer measurements is discussed. An average angular model applicable at 250 to 1000 km is presented and evaluated. The nature of the convergence of the radiance patterns to the regional means is also discussed. Radiances measured during summer Monex 1979, from Hudson Bay to Saudi Arabia, were averaged and then normalized by multiplying by pi and dividing by the scene-averaged reflected flux density. This casts the model into the inverse of the bidirectional reflectance normalization coefficient, which has the value of unity for an isotropic surface. The reflected component of the Earth's radiation budget is inferred to an accuracy of about 2.5%.

Scattering characteristics of Martin Black at 118 microns

BRDF (bidirectional reflectance distribution function) values for 0.000118 m radiation at different angles of incidence and different scattering angles from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite telescope baffle coated with Martin Black are presented. Data from scatterometer experiments are collected and the BRDF and beta - beta sub 0 (sin theta sub s - sin theta sub 0) values are calculated based on the geometry, the voltage readings, the attenuators in the beam, and the calculated reference levels. A composite curve of forward and backward scattering data for several angles of incidence shows a peak near the specular direction (beta - beta sub 0 = 0), which is the instrument profile reduced by the 20% specular reflection of the Martin Black. The nonspecular part of the reflectivity indicates the slightly specular but largely Lambertian character of the coating. Data for the specular reflectivity as a function of the incidence angle unexpectedly shows a decrease in the specular reflectance with increasing angle of incidence.
