Structural defect characterization of silicon dendritic web ribbons

An EBIC study of the cross section of silicon dendritic web ribbon has revealed that recombination-active structural defects are mainly concentrated in the inner part of the ribbon, particularly at and near the twin plane, whereas the material near the surface has significantly fewer defects. An analysis of the distribution of etch pits due to slip dislocations created by shear stress indicates that a minimum in the dislocation density is frequently observed in the ribbon adjacent to the dendrite.

Postbuckling and failure characteristics of stiffened graphite-epoxy shear webs

Results are presented from an experimental study of the postbuckling response and failure characteristics of flat, stiffened graphite-epoxy shear webs in which attention was given to the influence of stiffener attachment concepts, circular holes, and low speed impact damage on postbuckling performance. The laminate specimens chosen for testing are typical of those employed for transport aircraft primary structures. Test results show that low speed impact damage midway between stiffeners initiated specimen failure; the strength of an impact-damaged specimen was less than that of the corresponding control specimen.

Dislocation dynamics of web type silicon ribbon

Silicon ribbon grown by the dendritic web process passes through a rapidly changing thermal profile in the growth direction. This rapidly changing profile induces stresses which produce changes in the dislocation density in the ribbon. A viscoplastic material response function (Haasen-Sumino model) is used herein to calculate the stresses and the dislocation density at each point in the silicon ribbon. The residual stresses are also calculated.

Dislocation dynamics and the viscoplastic buckling of dendritic web type silicon ribbon

The effect of dendrites (reinforced edges) on the residual stresses, dislocation densities and buckling behavior during growth of web type silicon ribbon is studied. A viscoplastic material response function (Haasen-Sumino model) is used to calculate the stresses and the disloction density at each point in the silicon ribbon. In addition, the role of dendrites on the viscoplastic buckling behavior of the ribbon is investigated. The critical thicknesses, the corresponding deflection shapes and lateral deflection speeds are calculated. These results are then compared with similar data obtained for flat plates.

Reduction Of Stresses In Growing Silicon Webs

New trenched lid intercepts less radiation from edges of growing silicon ribbon, giving rise to faster growth and temperature distribution resulting in lower residual stress. Cutting trench in susceptor lid allows edges of growing ribbon of silicon to cool more rapidly. Edges cool and solidify nearly same rate as center of ribbon, and thermal stress in ribbon reduced. Because of more-effective edge cooling, wider ribbon grown, and withdrawn at faster rate. Productivity of dendritic-web growth furnace increased.

Structural response of bead-stiffened thermoplastic shear webs

The results of an experimental and analytical study of the structural response and failure characteristics of selected bead-stiffened thermoplastic shear-webs are presented. Results are given for specimens with one stiffeneer, with two stiffeners, and different stiffener geometries. Selected analytical results that were obtained with the Computational Structural Mechanics (CSM) Testbed computer code are presented. Analytical results that describe normal and transverse shear stress are also presented.

The initial torsional stiffness of shells with interior webs

A method of calculating the stresses and torsional stiffness of thin shells with interior webs is summarized. Comparisons between experimental and calculated results are given for 3 duralumin beams, 5 stainless steel beams and 2 duralumin wings. It is concluded that if the theoretical stiffness is multiplied by a correction factor of 0.9, experimental values may be expected to check calculated values within about 10 percent.

Analysis of square shear web above buckling load

A solution of Von Karman's fundamental equations for plates with large deflections is presented for the case of a shear web divided into square panels by reinforcing struts. Numerical solutions are given for struts of infinite rigidity and for struts the weight of which is one-fourth the weight of the sheet. The results are compared with Wagner's diagonal tension theory as extended by Kuhn and by Langhaar. It is found that the diagonal tension theory as developed by Kuhn agrees best with the present paper in the practical range when r=1/4. Kuhn's theory is in especially good agreement for the force in the strut when r=1/4.

Flat sheet metal girders with very thin metal web. Part I : general theories and assumptions

The object of this report was to develop the structural method of sheet metal girders and should for that reason be considered solely from this standpoint. The ensuing methods were based on the assumption of the infinitely low stiffness in bending of the metal web. This simplifies the basis of calculations to such an extent that many questions of great practical importance can be examined which otherwise cannot be included in any analysis of the bending stiffness of the buckled plate. This report refers to such points as the safety in buckling of uprights to the effect of bending flexibility of spars, to spars not set parallel, etc.

World wide web implementation of the Langley technical report server

On January 14, 1993, NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) made approximately 130 formal, 'unclassified, unlimited' technical reports available via the anonymous FTP Langley Technical Report Server (LTRS). LaRC was the first organization to provide a significant number of aerospace technical reports for open electronic dissemination. LTRS has been successful in its first 18 months of operation, with over 11,000 reports distributed and has helped lay the foundation for electronic document distribution for NASA. The availability of World Wide Web (WWW) technology has revolutionized the Internet-based information community. This paper describes the transition of LTRS from a centralized FTP site to a distributed data model using the WWW, and suggests how the general model for LTRS can be applied to other similar systems.

TOGA COARE Satellite data summaries available on the World Wide Web

Satellite data summary images and analysis plots from the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Response Experiment (TOGA COARE), which were initially prepared in the field at the Honiara Operations Center, are now available on the Internet via World Wide Web browsers such as Mosaic. These satellite data summaries consist of products derived from the Japanese Geosynchronous Meteorological Satellite IR data: a time-size series of the distribution of contiguous cold cloudiness areas, weekly percent high cloudiness (PHC) maps, and a five-month time-longitudinal diagram illustrating the zonal motion of large areas of cold cloudiness. The weekly PHC maps are overlaid with weekly mean 850-hPa wind calculated from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) global analysis field and can be viewed as an animation loop. These satellite summaries provide an overview of spatial and temporal variabilities of the cloud population and a large-scale context for studies concerning specific processes of various components of TOGA COARE.

Using the World-Wide Web to Facilitate Communications of Non-Destructive Evaluation

The high reliability required for Aeronautical components is a major reason for extensive Nondestructive Testing and Evaluation. Here at Langley Research Center (LaRC), there are highly trained and certified personal to conduct such testing to prevent hazards from occurring in the workplace and on the research projects for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The purpose of my studies was to develop a communication source to educate others of the services and equipment offered here. This was accomplished by creating documents that are accessible to all in the industry via the World Wide Web.
