Description of texts of auxiliary programs for processing video information. Part 2: SUODH program of automated separation of quasihomogeneous formations

The algorithm, block diagram, complete text, and instructions are given for the use of a computer program to separate formations whose spectral characteristics are constant on the average. The initial material for operating the computer program presented is video information in a standard color-superposition format.

Bandwidth compression of color video signals

The different encoder/decoder strategies to digitally encode video using an adaptive delta modulation are described. The techniques employed are: (1) separately encoding the R, G, and B components; (2) separately encoding the I, Y, and Q components; and (3) encoding the picture in a line sequential manner.

The effect of interference on delta modulation encoded video signals

An adaptive delta modulator which encodes composite color video signals was shown to provide a good response when operating at 16 Mb/s and near-commercial quality at 23Mb/s. The ADM was relatively immune to channel errors. The system design is discussed and circuit diagrams are included.

A 12 GHz satellite video receiver: Low noise, low cost prototype model for TV reception from broadcast satellites

A 12-channel synchronous phase lock video receiver consisting of an outdoor downconverter unit and an indoor demodulator unit was developed to provide both low noise performance and low cost in production quantities of 1000 units. The prototype receiver can be mass produced at a cost under $1540 without sacrificing system performance. The receiver also has the capability of selecting any of the twelve assigned satellite broadcast channels in the frequency range 11.7 to 12.2 GHz.

Video Target Tracking and Ranging System

Proposed target tracking and ranging system uses two automatic video target trackers to keep two TV cameras trained on object being tracked. Microcomputer calculates range and range-rate information by triangulation. Input data for calculation are position coordinates of two cameras and pan and tilt aiming angles of two cameras. System is useful for target ranging at distances up to about 1,000 feet (300 m) in such applications as vehicle collision avoidance, traffic monitoring and surveillance. Also substitutes for short-range radar in situations where radar signal can not be tolerated.

Video framerate, resolution and grayscale tradeoffs for undersea telemanipulator

The product of Frame Rate (F) in frames per second, Resolution (R) in total pixels and grayscale in bits (G) equals the transmission band rate in bits per second. Thus for a fixed channel capacity there are tradeoffs between F, R and G in the actual sampling of the picture for a particular manual control task in the present case remote undersea manipulation. A manipulator was used in the MASTER/SLAVE mode to study these tradeoffs. Images were systematically degraded from 28 frames per second, 128 x 128 pixels and 16 levels (4 bits) grayscale, with various FRG combinations constructed from a real-time digitized (charge-injection) video camera. It was found that frame rate, resolution and grayscale could be independently reduced without preventing the operator from accomplishing his/her task. Threshold points were found beyond which degradation would prevent any successful performance. A general conclusion is that a well trained operator can perform familiar remote manipulator tasks with a considerably degrade picture, down to 50 K bits/ sec.

Development of an autonomous video rendezous and docking system

Video control systems using three flashing lights and two other types of docking aids were evaluated through computer simulation and other approaches. The three light system performed much better than the others. Its accuracy is affected little by tumbling of the target spacecraft, and in the simulations it was able to cope with attitude rates up to 20,000 degrees per hour about the docking axis. Its performance with rotation about other axes is determined primarily by the state estimation and goal setting portions of the control system, not by measurement accuracy. A suitable control system, and a computer program that can serve as the basis for the physical simulation are discussed.

A color video display technique for flow field surveys

A computer driven color video display technique has been developed for the presentation of wind tunnel flow field survey data. The results of both qualitative and quantitative flow field surveys can be presented in high spatial resolutions color coded displays. The technique has been used for data obtained with a hot-wire probe, a split-film probe, a Conrad (pitch) probe and a 5-tube pressure probe in surveys above and behind a wing with partially stalled and fully stalled flow.

Status Panel For Video Cassette Recorders

Central array of light-emitting diodes displays status of 30 video cassette recorders (VCR's) monitoring integrated testing of Space Shuttle. Remote status panel linked to VCR's by one 37-conductor cable. Transistor/ transistor logic chips in interface circuit allow LED array to function without drawing power from VCR control circuits.

Orbital thermal analysis of lattice structured spacecraft using color video display techniques

A color video display technique is demonstrated as a tool for rapid determination of thermal problems during the preliminary design of complex space systems. A thermal analysis is presented for the lattice-structured Earth Observation Satellite (EOS) spacecraft at 32 points in a baseline non Sun-synchronous (60 deg inclination) orbit. Large temperature variations (on the order of 150 K) were observed on the majority of the members. A gradual decrease in temperature was observed as the spacecraft traversed the Earth's shadow, followed by a sudden rise in temperature (100 K) as the spacecraft exited the shadow. Heating rate and temperature histories of selected members and color graphic displays of temperatures on the spacecraft are presented.

A new architecture for adaptive transform compression of NTSC composite video signal

In orthogonal transform coding of NTSC video signal, the data is processed in blocks. Processing a block of data that is maximally correlated leads to larger compression. This paper describes a new architecture for arranging the pixels in a block that yields higher correlation than the adjacent pixel blocks. The data is processed using adaptive, intrafield, discrete cosine transform, variable bit allocation coding. In subjective tests, the picture quality was good for an average of about 2 bits/pel for intrafield processing.

NTSC composite video at 1.6 bits/pel

An adaptive algorithm for intraframe compression of NTSC composite color video signal is described. With an average of 80 percent compression (1.6 bits/pixel) and a bit error rate of 0.0001, excellent broadcast quality pictures were obtained. This is confirmed by a subjective evaluation of processed pictures by five viewers. The algorithm and the results of the subjective evaluation are given in this paper.

Balloon-borne video cassette recorders for digital data storage

A high-speed, high-capacity digital data storage system has been developed for a new balloon-borne gamma-ray telescope. The system incorporates sophisticated, yet easy to use and economical consumer products: the portable video cassette recorder (VCR) and a relatively newer item - the digital audio processor. The in-flight recording system employs eight VCRs and will provide a continuous data storage rate of 1.4 megabits/sec throughout a 40 hour balloon flight. Data storage capacity is 25 gigabytes and power consumption is only 10 watts.
