Quantum theory of an optical maser. VI - Transient behavior.

The transient behavior of a laser is discussed using the quantum theory as did Scully and Lamb. The formal solution of the density-matrix equation is expressed in terms of exponentially decaying eigenmodes. Some of the lower decay constants are obtained numerically. The equations for the moments of the density matrix are then derived and solved by a truncation method. The equations of motion are integrated numerically for the case where the average number of photons in a laser cavity has the realistically large value 1.3 x 100,000. An alternative Fokker-Planck-equation approach is discussed.

The occultation of beta Scorpii by Jupiter. VI - The masses of beta Scorpii A1 and A2

From images of the spectroscopic binary beta Sco A, formed by the Jovian atmosphere during its 1971 May 13 occultation by Jupiter, the angular separation of the binary components was found to be 0.001496 plus of minus 0.000018 arcsec. The combination of this measurement, the elements of the spectroscopic orbit, and the parallax determination of Bertiau (1958) yields masses of 21.1 plus or minus 3.2 solar masses for the primary (B0.5 V) and 12.7 plus or minus 1.9 solar masses for the secondary. New observations are suggested for improving the accuracy of the mass determinations.

Variable features on Mars. VI - An unusual crater streak in Mesogaea

An unusual prominent dark streak located in Mesogaea (near 8 deg N, 191 deg W) is described. Its appearance is unlike that of most dark streaks on Mars, many of which have ragged outlines, are variable on short time-scales, and are presumed to be erosional. The Mesogaea streak has a tapered smooth outline, and no changes within it were observed. It is suggested that this streak is depositional and that the low-albedo material originated within the associated crater itself. The source area is identified with a compact low-albedo region on the crater floor. Two possible origins for the dark material are suggested:(1) deflation from a recently exposed and relatively unconsolidated subsurface deposit, and (2) production of ash by a volcanic vent.

The C-12/C-13 ratio in stellar atmospheres. VI - Five luminous cool stars

A simple curve-of-growth technique is described for extracting the C-12/C-13 ratio for M stars from high-resolution spectra of CO infrared vibration-rotation lines. The technique is applied to the CO lines at 1.6 and 2.3 microns in spectra of two M supergiants (Alpha Ori and Alpha Sco), two M giants (Alpha Her and Beta Peg), and a Mira-type variable (Chi Cyg). As a check on the CO analysis, the C-12/C-13 ratio is derived from the red CN system at 8000 A for Alpha Sco, Alpha Ori, and Beta Peg. The CO analysis is also applied to the K giant Alpha Boo as a check. The CN and CO results are found to be in general agreement, and the C-12/C-13 ratio in all the examined stars is shown to be considerably lower than the solar-system value. It is suggested that these stars were formed from clouds with a C-12/C-13 ratio of 40 to 89 and that their atmospheres now exhibit an enhancement of C-13 abundance due to internal production and mixing to the surface.

Superalloy eutectic composites with the VI A refractory elements - Cr, Mo and W

The paper discusses the phase equilibria for the ternary systems NiAlCr, NiAlMo, and NiAlW, with emphasis on reactions from the liquid state, although some of the solid state reactions are mentioned. It is shown that eutectics in the Ni-Al-refractory element (Cr, Mo, W) systems offer the potential for high-temperature turbine blade and vane applications. In particular, it is shown that the phase diagrams of these ternary systems can be manipulated to alter the eutectic phases and morphologies by simple quaternary alloying modifications. The resultant combination of chemistry and structure can be controlled to ensure a behavior that is well-matched to hot section component materials requirements.

Application of photometric analyses for interpretation of Mars-Mariner VI and VII imagery

The application of radiometric analysis in the interpretation of Mariner 6 and 7 imagery is investigated and illustrated. The following types of problems were felt could be addressed using this imagery: (1) evaluation of local reflectivity changes; (2) augmentation of geological mapping; (3) discrimination of atmospheric phenomena; and (4) investigation of polar cap structure.

Stellar model chromospheres. VI - Empirical estimates of the chromospheric radiative losses of late-type stars

A method is developed for estimating the nonradiative heating of stellar chromospheres by measuring the net radiative losses in strong Fraunhofer line cores. This method is applied to observations of the Mg II resonance lines in a sample of 32 stars including the sun. At most a small dependence of chromospheric nonradiative heating on stellar surface gravity is found, which is contrary to the large effect predicted by recent calculations based on acoustic-heating theories.
