Space radiator simulation manual for computer code

A computer program that simulates the performance of a space radiator is presented. The program basically consists of a rigorous analysis which analyzes a symmetrical fin panel and an approximate analysis that predicts system characteristics for cases of non-symmetrical operation. The rigorous analysis accounts for both transient and steady state performance including aerodynamic and radiant heating of the radiator system. The approximate analysis considers only steady state operation with no aerodynamic heating. A description of the radiator system and instructions to the user for program operation is included. The input required for the execution of all program options is described. Several examples of program output are contained in this section. Sample output includes the radiator performance during ascent, reentry and orbit.

Throat-bypass bleed systems for increasing the stable airflow range of a Mach 2.50 axisymmetric inlet with 40-percent internal contraction

The results of an experimental investigation to increase the stable airflow range of a super sonic mixed-compression inlet are presented. Various throat-bypass bleeds were located on the inlet cowl. The bleed types were distributed porous normal holes, a forward slanted slot, or distributed educated slots. Large inlet stability margins were obtained with the inlet throat bleed systems if a constant pressure was maintained in the throat-bypass bleed plenum. Stability limits were determined for steady-state and limited transient internal air flow changes. Limited unstart angle-of-attack data are presented.

Improved turbine disk design to increase reliability of aircraft jet engines

An analytical study was conducted on a bore entry cooled turbine disk for the first stage of the JT8D-17 high pressure turbine which had the potential to improve disk life over existing design. The disk analysis included the consideration of transient and steady state temperature, blade loading, creep, low cycle fatigue, fracture mechanics and manufacturing flaws. The improvement in life of the bore entry cooled turbine disk was determined by comparing it with the existing disk made of both conventional and advanced (Astroloy) disk materials. The improvement in crack initiation life of the Astroloy bore entry cooled disk is 87% and 67% over the existing disk made of Waspaloy and Astroloy, respectively. Improvement in crack propagation life is 124% over the Waspaloy and 465% over the Astroloy disks. The available kinetic energies of disk fragments calculated for the three disks indicate a lower fragment energy level for the bore entry cooled turbine disk.

Time-dependent, non-Newtonian behavior of viscoelastic materials

A kinetic model for characterizing the shear stress or shear strain rate of thixotropic materials is developed and combined with Oldroyd's viscoelastic model (1953) modified in this paper in order to predict the first normal stress difference. In order to test the method, transient and steady state data have been obtained with a Weissenberg rheogoniometer used to measure the constant stress and constant shear rate of a solution of polymethyl methacrylate in diethylphthalate. A computer was used to facilitate data acquisition.

Finite element solutions of free surface flows

A procedure is presented for using NASTRAN to determine the flow field about arbitrarily shaped bodies in the presence of a free surface. The fundamental unknown of the problem is the velocity potential which must satisfy Laplace's equation in the fluid region. Boundary conditions on the free surface may involve second order derivatives in space and time. In cases involving infinite domains either a tractable radiation condition is applied at a truncated boundary or a series expansion is used and matched to the local finite elements. Solutions are presented for harmonic, transient, and steady state problems and compared to either exact solutions or other numerical solutions.

TACT1, a computer program for the transient thermal analysis of a cooled turbine blade or vane equipped with a coolant insert. 1. Users manual

A computer program to calculate transient and steady state temperatures, pressures, and coolant flows in a cooled, axial flow turbine blade or vane with an impingement insert is described. Coolant side heat transfer coefficients are calculated internally in the program, with the user specifying either impingement or convection heat transfer at each internal flow station. Spent impingement air flows in a chordwise direction and is discharged through the trailing edge and through film cooling holes. The ability of the program to handle film cooling is limited by the internal flow model. Sample problems, with tables of input and output, are included in the report. Input to the program includes a description of the blade geometry, coolant supply conditions, outside thermal boundary conditions, and wheel speed. The blade wall can have two layers of different materials, such as a ceramic thermal barrier coating over a metallic substrate. Program output includes the temperature at each node, the coolant pressures and flow rates, and the inside heat-transfer coefficients.

High speed cylindrical roller bearing analysis, SKF computer program CYBEAN. Volume 2: User's manual

The CYBEAN (Cylindrical Bearing Analysis) was created to detail radially loaded, aligned and misaligned cylindrical roller bearing performance under a variety of operating conditions. Emphasis was placed on detailing the effects of high speed, preload and system thermal coupling. Roller tilt, skew, radial, circumferential and axial displacement as well as flange contact were considered. Variable housing and flexible out-of-round outer ring geometries, and both steady state and time transient temperature calculations were enabled. The complete range of elastohydrodynamic contact considerations, employing full and partial film conditions were treated in the computation of raceway and flange contacts. Input and output architectures containing guidelines for use and a sample execution are detailed.

Spacecraft charging results for the DSCS-3 satellite

Spacecraft charging results are presented for the DSCS-3 satellite for a severe geomagnetic substorm. Spacecraft charging results were obtained by the use of the electrostatic charging analysis program (ESCAP). The ESCAP computer code which can determine both the transient or steady state differential charging potentials was an engineering design tool that utilized a circuit theory approach to spacecraft charging. Using the ESCAP code, the steady state (static) differential potentials of the outer spacecraft surfaces and metallic structure were obtained for the DSCS-3 satellite when under the influence of a severe geomagnetic substorm during the local midnight-to-dawn quadrant of its geosynchronous orbital path. The results indicated that, in the steady state, most of the DSCS-3 outer surface materials will not achieve differential potentials large enough to produce an electrostatic discharge.

The transient and steady state response of the respiratory control system for variations in volumetric fractions of inspired gases and special system parameters are modeled. The program contains the capability to change workload. The program is based on Grodins' respiratory control model and can be envisioned as a feedback control system comprised of a plant (the controlled system) and the regulating component (controlling system). The controlled system is partitioned into 3 compartments corresponding to lungs, brain, and tissue with a fluid interconnecting patch representing the blood.

Synthesis of a control model for a liquid nitrogen cooled, closed circuit, cryogenic nitrogen wind tunnel and its validation

The details of the efforts to synthesize a control-compatible multivariable model of a liquid nitrogen cooled, gaseous nitrogen operated, closed circuit, cryogenic pressure tunnel are presented. The synthesized model was transformed into a real-time cryogenic tunnel simulator, and this model is validated by comparing the model responses to the actual tunnel responses of the 0.3 m transonic cryogenic tunnel, using the quasi-steady-state and the transient responses of the model and the tunnel. The global nature of the simple, explicit, lumped multivariable model of a closed circuit cryogenic tunnel is demonstrated.

Three-dimensional analysis of charging events on days 87 and 114, 1979, from SCATHA

Angular distributions of ions and electrons from the Spacecraft Charging at High Altitudes (SCATHA) were investigated for the floating potential and the differential charging of the spacecraft as deduced from Liouville's theorem. The following was found: (1) short time charging events on the spacecraft are associated with short time increases of the intensity of 10 keV to 1 MeV electrons; (2) short time changes of the spacecraft differential potential are associated with simultaneous short time changes of the spacecraft floating potential; (3) solar UV intensities in penumbra anticorrelate with the spacecraft floating potentials; (4) NASCAP predicts correct forms of sunshade asymmetric surface potentials; (5) certain enhancements of the intensity of energetic ions diminishes the absolute value of the spacecraft surface potential; (6) spacecraft discharging events in times shorter than 20 sec did not change in the spectrum of the energetic plasma; (7) partial discharging of the spacecraft occurred upon entry into a magnetically depleted region; and (8) steady state potentials and transient potentials of duration less than 30 seconds are simulated by the NASCAP code.

In addition, the program was updated to properly direct roller-to-raceway contact load vectors automatically in those cases where roller or ring profiles have small radii of curvature. Input and output architectures containing guidelines for use and two sample executions are detailed.
