Optically selective, acoustically resonant gas detecting transducer

A gas analyzer is disclosed which responds to the resonant absorption or emission spectrum of a specific gas by producing an acoustic resonance in a chamber containing a sample of that gas, and which measures the amount of that emission or absorption by measuring the strength of that acoustic resonance, e.g., the maximum periodic pressure, velocity or density achieved. In the preferred embodiment, a light beam is modulated periodically at the acoustical resonance frequency of a closed chamber which contains an optically dense sample of the gas of interest. Periodic heating of the absorbing gas by the light beam causes a cyclic expansion, movement, and pressure within the gas. An amplitude is reached where the increased losses were the cyclic radiation energy received. A transducing system is inclined for converting the pressure variations of the resonant gas into electronic readout signals.

Comparison of concurrent strain gage- and pressure transducer-measured flight loads on a lifting reentry vehicle and correlation with wind tunnel predictions

Concurrent strain gage and pressure transducer measured flight loads on a lifting reentry vehicle are compared and correlated with wind tunnel-predicted loads. Subsonic, transonic, and supersonic aerodynamic loads are presented for the left fin and control surfaces of the X-24B lifting reentry vehicle. Typical left fin pressure distributions are shown. The effects of variations in angle of attack, angle of sideslip, and Mach number on the left fin loads and rudder hinge moments are presented in coefficient form. Also presented are the effects of variations in angle of attack and Mach number on the upper flap, lower flap, and aileron hinge-moment coefficients. The effects of variations in lower flap hinge moments due to changes in lower flap deflection and Mach number are presented in terms of coefficient slopes.

Attaching strain transducers to fragile materials

A-shaped clamp prevents damage to thin, brittle specimens and supports displacement transducer away from heated zone. Also it defines reference points for strain measurement on specimen surface thus preventing specimen cracking due to unequal thermal expansion between clamp and holder.

Adaptation of ion beam technology to microfabrication of solid state devices and transducers

A number of areas were investigated to determine the potential uses of ion beam techniques in the construction of solid state devices and transducers and the packaging of implantable electronics for biomedical applications. The five areas investigated during the past year were: (1) diode-like devices fabricated on textured silicon; (2) a photolithographic technique for patterning ion beam sputtered PVC (polyvinyl chloride); (3) use of sputtered Teflon as a protective coating for implantable pressure sensors; (4) the sputtering of Macor to seal implantable hybrid circuits; and (5) the use of sputtered Teflon to immobilize enzymes.

Flutter spectral measurements using stationary pressure transducers

Engine-order sampling was used to eliminate the integral harmonics from the flutter spectra corresponding to a case-mounted static pressure transducer. Using the optical displacement data, it was demonstrated that the blade-order sampling of pressure data may yield erroneous results due to the interference caused by blade vibration. Two methods are presented which effectively eliminate this interference yielding the blade-pressure-difference spectra. The phase difference between the differential-pressure and the displacement spectra was evaluated.

Digital ultrasonic signal processing: Primary ultrasonics task and transducer characterization use and detailed description

This manual describes the use of the primary ultrasonics task (PUT) and the transducer characterization system (XC) for the collection, processing, and recording of data received from a pulse-echo ultrasonic system. Both PUT and XC include five primary functions common to many real-time data acquisition systems. Some of these functions are implemented using the same code in both systems. The solicitation and acceptance of operator control input is emphasized. Those operations not under user control are explained.

Solar cell angular position transducer

An angular position transducer utilizing photocells and a light source is disclosed. The device uses a fully rotatable baffle which is connected via an actuator shaft to the body whose rotational displacement is to be measured. The baffle blocks the light path between the light source and the photocells so that a constant semicircular beam of light reaches the photocells. The current produced by the photocells is fed through a resistor, a differential amplifier measures the voltage drop across the resistor which indicates the angular position of the actuator shaft and hence of the object.

Flutter spectral measurements using stationary pressure transducers

The paper deals with an analysis procedure, based on engine-order sampling, which eliminates effectively the engine harmonics from the overall flutter spectra obtained with a case-mounted static pressure transducer. Qualitative spectral analyses of pressure data, performed on the basis of blade order sampling, are examined. The interference of blade motion with the pressure signal in the steep gradient portion of the blade passage is demonstrated, using optimal displacement spectra. Two methods which remove the contribution of blade motion from the blade-pressure-difference spectra are described.

Low current linearization of magnetic amplifier for dc transducer

A magnetic amplifier having two saturable reactor cores with a separate excitation winding on each connected in series opposition, a common control winding, and a common output winding, is adapted for use as a low level signal transducer. The separate excitation windings are excited in push-pull mode through a center tapped transformer, and at least one diode is included in series with a load resistor connected to the output winding. A resistor in series with the output winding and load resistor is connected between the center tap of the excitation transformer and the connection between the two excitation windings of the saturable cores. This series resistor provides a return current path for the output winding and allows the excitation windings of the saturable cores to operate as primary windings of transformers.

Ultrasonic imaging using trapped energy mode Fresnel lens transducers

Trapped-energy focusing transducers operating in the 2-5 MHz range have been fabricated by plating concentric rings of electrodes on a piezoelectric plate. The concentric ring structure acts as a Fresnel lens and can be used to obtain excellent lateral focusing of ultrasonic waves. The trapping is sufficiently strong to permit optimization of electrode spacings to suppress spurious virtual foci and ring sidelobes.
