Definition of multipath/RFI experiments for orbital testing with a small applications technology satellite

An investigation was made to define experiments for collection of RFI and multipath data for application to a synchronous relay satellite/low orbiting satellite configuration. A survey of analytical models of the multipath signal was conducted. Data has been gathered concerning the existing RFI and other noise sources in various bands at VHF and UHF. Additionally, designs are presented for equipment to combat the effects of RFI and multipath: an adaptive delta mod voice system, a forward error control coder/decoder, a PN transmission system, and a wideband FM system. The performance of these systems was then evaluated. Techniques are discussed for measuring multipath and RFI. Finally, recommended data collection experiments are presented. An extensive tabulation is included of theoretical predictions of the amount of signal reflected from a rough, spherical earth.

Equations of motion for the X-14 Aircraft, phase 2 study

A study of the control and power requirements of the X-14 VTOL aircraft is presented. The complete equations of motion for X-14 are derived. The fundamental assumption is that the aircraft is a single rigid body. The equations of motion are derived with respect to a set of axes fixed to the aircraft. Additional assumptions used are that any wind disturbances are irrotational that the twin engines used on the aircraft rotate in the same direction at the same speed and that the engine exhaust is diverted by means of vanes to provide a direction varying thrust vector. The equations obtained are subsequently linearized about various reference conditions and numerical values for the trim parameters and the stability derivatives at these conditions are tabulated.

Calculation of retroreflector array transfer functions

Computer programs have been developed for calculating the transfer function of a retroreflector array. The transfer functions provide range corrections and effective reflecting areas for the retroreflector arrays carried by satellites now in orbit. This information can be used to estimate laser echo signal strengths and to correct laser range measurements in order to obtain the range to the center of mass of the satellite. The values are tabulated for various angles of incidence of the laser beam with respect to the symmetry axis of the satellite. Transfer functions have been computed for the following satellites: BE-B, BE-C, Geos 1, D1C, D1D, Geos 2, Peole, and Geos C.

Optical transmission measurements on monocrystalline and polycrystalline cesium iodide

A summary is presented of optical measurements performed on a variety of cesium iodide samples to characterize quantitatively the optical quality of the materials, and to define and measure parameters which determine its suitability as a detector material for high energy cosmic ray experiments on HEAO-A. The general case of light transmission through a long rectangular slab under multiple internal reflections is discussed along with transmission and scattering as a function of wavelength at normal incidence. Scattering parameters are tabulated for encapsulated single crystal CsI and polyscin.

Chemical nonequilibrium effects on the inviscid flow in the windward plane of symmetry of two simplified shuttle configurations

A theoretical study was made to delineate the effects of thermochemical nonequilibrium in the inviscid flow field of a representative space shuttle orbiter configuration. The study was based on experimental pressure data which was used as an input to a stream tube computer program. The pressure data from two configurations are tabulated. Calculations were restricted to the windward plane of symmetry and the calculations covered an altitude range from 200,000 to 250,000 feet at velocities of 16,000 to 24,000 feet per second respectively. Angles of attack of 20 and 40 degrees were included. The calculations show that the nonequilibrium effects are confined largely to the entropy layer expect at the highest altitude, where significant nonequilibrium effects are observed in the entire inviscid flow field.

Analytical and experimental performance of optimal controller designs for a supersonic inlet

The techniques of modern optimal control theory were applied to the design of a control system for a supersonic inlet. The inlet control problem was approached as a linear stochastic optimal control problem using as the performance index the expected frequency of unstarts. The details of the formulation of the stochastic inlet control problem are presented. The computational procedures required to obtain optimal controller designs are discussed, and the analytically predicted performance of controllers designed for several different inlet conditions is tabulated. The experimental implementation of the optimal control laws is described, and the experimental results obtained in a supersonic wind tunnel are presented. The control laws were implemented with analog and digital computers. Comparisons are made between the experimental and analytically predicted performance results. Comparisons are also made between the results obtained with continuous analog computer controllers and discrete digital computer versions.

Quenching of the fluorescence of NO2

The fluorescence yield of NO2 was monitored at 25 C with incident wavelengths of 4047, 4358, and 4800A at fluorescence wavelengths of 4860, 5577, and 6300A. The NO2 pressure was varied between 0.004 and 0.080 torr. Measurements were taken both in the absence of foreign gases and in the presence of up to 30 torr. He, N2, and O2 at each NO2 pressure. In the absence of foreign gases, the self quenching follows a Stern-Volmer quenching mechanism, but foreign-gas quenching shows marked deviations from this mechanism. Both from lifetime and kinetic considerations, it is argued that the electronic state formed by absorption of the radiation cannot be the emitting state. Emission occurs from several vibrational levels of the emitting state, the various vibrational levels being formed by collisional cascade reactions. The appropriate quenching rate constant ratios were measured and tabulated. Even the two electronic state mechanism is insufficient to explain all the observations.

Transition splices and cost comparison

The development and testing of two designs of transition splices are reported. The design goal was to produce splice terminations that are electrically insulated to withstand the environmental conditions of commercial aircraft and are capable of being repaired and reworked on installed cables with the use of hand tools. In addition, a cost study comparison of FCC vs. RCC is reported. The comparison was made on a basis of 10 aircraft with each vehicle using approximately 100,000 feet of wiring and 2,000 connectors. The results are tabulated for seven different wiring configurations.

Local skin friction coefficients and boundary layer profiles obtained in flight from the XB-70-1 airplane at Mach numbers up to 2.5

Boundary-layer and local friction data for Mach numbers up to 2.5 and Reynolds numbers up to 3.6 x 10 to the 8th power were obtained in flight at three locations on the XB-70-1 airplane: the lower forward fuselage centerline (nose), the upper rear fuselage centerline, and the upper surface of the right wing. Local skin friction coefficients were derived at each location by using (1) a skin friction force balance, (2) a Preston probe, and (3) an adaptation of Clauser's method which derives skin friction from the rake velocity profile. These three techniques provided consistent results that agreed well with the von Karman-Schoenherr relationship for flow conditions that are quasi-two-dimensional. At the lower angles of attack, the nose-boom and flow-direction vanes are believed to have caused the momentum thickness at the nose to be larger than at the higher angles of attack. The boundary-layer data and local skin friction coefficients are tabulated. The wind-tunnel-model surface-pressure distribution ahead of the three locations and the flight surface-pressure distribution ahead of the wing location are included.

Experimental investigation of liquid propellant dynamics in a double cylindrical tank

Experimental data are presented for verifying the computer program for computing propellant oscillation modes and frequencies for tanks of any shape, fill level, or orientation. The experimental apparatus including the tank, support and excitation system, and instrumentation is described along with the procedures. Results showing slosh forces and moments are tabulated for different fill heights. It was found that for the vertical tank excited along the long axis, the frequencies of the higher modes are significantly higher than with the tank tilted. Little difference was noted for excitation along the short axis.

A study of ventricular contractility and other parameters possibly related to vasodepressor syncope

The effects of diminished orthostatic and exercise tolerance resulting from prolonged bedrest were studied by noninvasion methods to determine if alterations in myocardial contractility were induced by bedrest. These methods were apexcardiography, systolic time intervals, and echocardiography. It is concluded that bedrest causes detrimental alterations in the contractile state of the myocardium which accounts for the decreases in maximal oxygen uptaken during exercise after bedrest. Tabulated test data are included.

Hot and cold atmospheres for Vandenberg AFB, California (1973 version)

Extreme atmospheres, pertaining to summer (hot) and winter (cold) conditions for Vandenberg Air Force Base, California, are presented from 0- to 90-km altitudes. Computed values of pressure, e, kinetic temperature, virtual temperature, density, and relative differences (percentages from Vandenberg Reference Atmosphere, 1971 (VRA 71)) of the atmospheric parameters versus altitude are tabulated in increments of 250 m. Hydrostatic and gas law equations were used in conjunction with radiosonde and rocketsonde thermodynamic data in determining the vertical structure of the two atmospheric models. The summer-type density profile deviated from -9.0 percent (of the VRA-71) at the ground to 28.4 percent at 74.5-km altitude. The winter density profile went from 5.2 percent at the surface to -31.4 percent at 72 km.
