Exploring Object Detection and Image Classification Tasks for Niche Use Case in Naturalistic Driving Studies

Naturalistic driving studies consist of drivers using their personal vehicles and provide valuable real-world data, but privacy issues must be handled very carefully. Drivers sign a consent form when they elect to participate, but passengers do not for a variety of practical reasons. However, their privacy must still be protected. One large study includes a blurred image of the entire cabin which allows reviewers to find passengers in the vehicle; this protects the privacy but still allows a means of answering questions regarding the impact of passengers on driver behavior. A method for automatically counting the passengers would have scientific value for transportation researchers. We investigated different image analysis methods for automatically locating and counting the non-drivers including simple face detection and fine-tuned methods for image classification and a published object detection method. We also compared the image classification using convolutional neural network and vision transformer backbones. Our studies show the image classification method appears to work the best in terms of absolute performance, although we note the closed nature of our dataset and nature of the imagery makes the application somewhat niche and object detection methods also have advantages. We perform some analysis to support our conclusion.

AI foundation models for experimental fusion tasks

Artificial Intelligence (AI) foundation models, while successful in various domains of language, speech, and vision, have not been adopted in production for fusion energy experiments. This brief paper presents how AI foundation models can be used for fusion energy diagnostics, enabling, for example, visual automated logbooks to provide greater insights into chains of plasma events in a discharge, in time for between-shot analysis.

Ocean Energy Systems Wave Energy Modeling Task 10.4: Numerical Modeling of a Fixed Oscillating Water Column

This paper reports on an ongoing international effort to establish guidelines for numerical modeling of wave energy converters, initiated by the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Program for Ocean Energy Systems. Initial results for point absorbers were presented in previous work, and here we present results for a breakwater-mounted Oscillating Water Column (OWC) device. The experimental model is at scale 1:4 relative to a full-scale installation in a water depth of 12.8 m. The power-extracting air turbine is modeled by an orifice plate of 1–2% of the internal chamber surface area. Measurements of chamber surface elevation, air flow through the orifice, and pressure difference across the orifice are compared with numerical calculations using both weakly-nonlinear potential flow theory and computational fluid dynamics. Both compressible- and incompressible-flow models are considered, and the effects of air compressibility are found to have a significant influence on the motion of the internal chamber surface. Recommendations are made for reducing uncertainties in future experimental campaigns, which are critical to enable firm conclusions to be drawn about the relative accuracy of the numerical models. It is well-known that boundary element method solutions of the linear potential flow problem (e.g., WAMIT) are singular at infinite frequency when panels are placed directly on the free surface. This is problematic for time-domain solutions where the value of the added mass matrix at infinite frequency is critical, especially for OWC chambers, which are modeled by zero-mass elements on the free surface. A straightforward rational procedure is described to replace ad-hoc solutions to this problem that have been proposed in the literature.

Lahaina Energy Partnership Community Workshop: Technical Assistance Task Updates and Discussion [Slides]

The Lahaina Energy Partnership (LEP) is an initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to support energy planning and rebuilding efforts in Hawaii's historic town of Lahaina on Maui as the community recovers from a devastating fire on August 8, 2023, with technical assistance provided by NLR. This presentation provides an update on NLR's technical assistance efforts for May 2026.
