Heliostat Observation System Commercialization Qualification HOS-C-Q (Final Technical Report)

Heliostat fields are one of the main components of a concentrated solar thermal plant. As GEN3 technology has been developed at pilot plant level targeting higher temperatures >700C, having a precise Heliostat field control system will enable the success of the GEN3 technology. Heliogen Inc. has developed the next generation of control systems for heliostat fields. Their early development was on single facet heliostats at their R&D facility in Lancaster, California. This new system allows for a closed loop integration to a current open loop setup of a regular Heliostat control system. Sandia National Laboratories and Heliogen Inc. have partnered together to test Heliogen’ s innovative new SOHOT system at the National Solar Thermal Test Facility.

Barriers and Alternatives to Encryption in Critical Nuclear Systems

Over the past decade, cybersecurity researchers have released multiple studies highlighting the insecure nature of I&C system communication protocols. In response, standards bodies have addressed the issue by adding the ability to encrypt communications to some protocols in some cases, while control system engineers have argued that encryption within these kinds of high consequence systems is in fact dangerous. Certainly, control system information between systems should be protected. But encrypting the information may not be the best way to do so. In fact, while in IT systems vendors are concerned with confidentiality, integrity, and availability, frequently in that order, in OT systems engineers are much more concerned with availability and integrity that confidentiality. In this paper, we will counter specific arguments against encrypting control system traffic, and present potential alternatives to encryption that support nuclear OT system needs more strongly that commodity IT system needs while still providing robust integrity and availability guarantees.

Characterizing Connected Lighting Systems

In the context of evaluating a lighting control system, characterization refers to the identification and description of key attributes and distinctive features of that system. NGLS has to date characterized both the form and function of 14 lighting control systems installed in the Living Lab at Parsons School of Design in New York City. The goal of NGLS characterizations in the Living Lab has been to achieve a broad understanding of “these types of systems” as a class, rather than a detailed description of any individual system.

A Novel Modular, Reconfigurable Battery Energy Storage System: Design, Control, and Experimentation

This paper presents a novel modular, reconfigurable battery energy storage system. The proposed design is characterized by a tight integration of reconfigurable power switches and DC/DC converters. This characteristic enables isolation of faulty cells from the system and allows fine power control for individual cells toward optimal system-level performance. An optimal power management approach is developed to extensively exploit the merits of the proposed design. Based on receding-horizon convex optimization, this approach aims to minimize the total power losses in charging/discharging while allocating the power in line with each cell’s condition to achieve state of-charge (SoC) and temperature balancing. By appropriate design, the approach manages to regulate the power of a cell across its full SoC range and guarantee the feasibility of the optimization problem. Here, we perform extensive simulations and further develop a lab-scale prototype to validate the proposed system design and power management approach.

Entangled Photon Pair Source Demonstrator Using the Quantum Instrumentation Control Kit System

Here, we report the first demonstration of using the Quantum Instrumentation and Control Kit (QICK) system on RFSoC-FPGA technology to drive the electro-optic intensity modulator that generate time-bin entangled photon pairs and to detect the photon signals. With the QICK system, we achieve high levels of performance metrics including coincidence-to-accidental ratio exceeding 150, and entanglement visibility exceeding 95%, consistent with performance metrics achieved using conventional waveform generators. We also demonstrate simultaneous detector readout using the digitization functional of QICK, achieving internal system synchronization time resolution of 3.2 ps. The work reported in this paper represents an explicit demonstration of the feasibility for replacing commercial waveform generators and time taggers with RFSoC-FPGA technology in the operation of a quantum network, representing a cost reduction of more than an order of magnitude.

A Methodology for Robust Load Reduction in Wind Turbine Blades Using Flow Control Devices

Decades of wind turbine research, development and installation have demonstrated reductions in levelized cost of energy (LCOE) resulting from turbines with larger rotor diameters and increased hub heights. Further reductions in LCOE by up-scaling turbine size can be challenged by practical limitations such as the square-cube law: where the power scales with the square of the blade length and the added mass scales with the volume (the cube). Active blade load control can disrupt this trend, allowing longer blades with less mass. This paper presents the details of the development of a robust load control system to reduce blade fatigue loads. The control system, which we coined sectional lift control or SLC, uses a lift actuator model to emulate an active flow control device. The main contributions of this paper are: (1) Methodology for SLC design to reduce dynamic blade root moments in a neighborhood of the rotor angular frequency (1P). (2) Analysis and numerical evidence supporting the use of a single robust SLC for all wind speeds, without the need for scheduling on wind speed or readily available measurements such as collective pitch or generator angular speed. (3) Intuition and numerical evidence to demonstrate that the SLC and the turbine controller do not interact. (4) Evaluation of the SLC using a full suite of fatigue and turbine performance metrics.

Integrated Coordination of Voltage Regulators with Distributed Cooperative Inverter Control in Systems with High Penetration of DGs

Increased penetration of distributed generation (DG) in recent years has a significant impact on operation and control of power systems. One of the main issues with the increased penetration of DGs is the effect of voltage rise. This paper investigates integration of coordinated voltage regulator (VRs) operation with cooperative distributed inverter control to maintain voltages in appropriate limits in distribution systems with high penetration of DGs. The coordinated VR control is used to optimize the settings of multiple nested VRs while the cooperative distributed control optimally dispatches reactive power of the DGs. The integrated approach is compared with the case without coordinated VRs control (uncoordinated local control). Simulation results illustrate the effective performance of the proposed method to achieve unified voltage profile.

Performance of the LLRF System for the Fermilab PIP-II Injector Test

PIP-II IT is a test facility for the PIP-II project where the injector, warm front-end, and the first two superconducting cryomodules are being tested. The 8-cavity half-wave-resonator (HWR) cryomodule operating at 162.5 MHz is followed by the 8-cavity single-spoke resonator(SSR1) cryomodule operating at 325 MHz. The LLRF systems for both cryomodules are based on a common SOC FPGA-based hardware platform. The resonance control systems for the two cryomodules are quite different, the first being a pneumatic system based on helium pressure and the latter a piezo/stepper motor type control. The data acquisition and control system can support both CW and Pulsed mode operations. Beam loading compensation is available which can be used for both manual/automatic control in the LLRF system. The user interfaces include EPICS, Labview, and ACNET. Testing of the RF system has progressed to the point of being ready for a 2 mA beam to be accelerated to 25 MeV. The design and performance of the field control and resonance control system operation with beam are presented in this paper.

Providing Thermal Stability for an Exascale Supercomputer: A Case Study of Frontier's Cooling System

High performance computing (HPC) systems frequently produce large dynamic power swings, even under typical operating conditions, that can present a significant challenge for their direct-liquid cooling systems. Further, the primary cooling loops that must remove this waste heat have response times measured in minutes while the underlying HPC component thermal stress is measured in seconds. The per-socket power demand for both compute processing units (CPUs) and graphic processing units ( GPUs) continues to increase with each successive generation while case temperatures are declining. New HPC systems are expected to exacerbate the challenge of these dynamic power swings and the impact on effective and timely cooling systems. This paper describes the cooling and controls system for Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Frontier Supercomputer, the first sustained exascale system, as a case study for this situation. The cooling and control system for Frontier demonstrates specific success, but with a number of trade-offs and decisions that suggest further design and operating optimizations for the community at large to consider.

Electrical circuit control in power systems

Electrical circuit control techniques in power systems are disclosed herein. In one embodiment, a supervisory computer in the power system can be configured to fit phasor measurement data from phasor measurement units into a Gaussian distribution with a corresponding Gaussian confidence level. When the Gaussian confidence level of the fitted Gaussian distribution is above a Gaussian confidence threshold, the supervisory computer can be configured to perform an ambient analysis on the received phasor measurement data to determine an operating characteristic of the power system. The supervisory computer can then automatically applying at least one electrical circuit control action to the power system in response to the determined operating characteristic.

Predictive Coordinated and Cooperative Voltage Control for Systems With High Penetration of PV

In this paper, we propose a predictive coordinated and cooperative voltage control method in a power distribution system with high penetration of photovoltaic (PV) units. First, an integrated coordinated voltage control of voltage regulators (VRs) tap positions and cooperative distributed control of the reactive power output from PV inverters are used to maintain system voltages within an appropriate bandwidth. Next, solar power forecasting is applied to predict voltage changes, which are used to set the VR tap positions and capacitor switch status to prevent large voltage fluctuations. The fine tuning of voltage adjustment is then achieved by cooperative control of PV inverters to maintain a uniform voltage profile across the system. The proposed method is tested on a modified IEEE 123-node test feeder with high penetration of PVs using real measurement data and compared with the base case. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the integrated voltage control, as well as the enhancement from the predictive control through solar power forecasting-enabled voltage change estimates. Comparison to previous work in the literature shows significant improvement in terms of voltage deviation and reduction in excessive tap changes.

Online Model-Free Chance-Constrained Distribution System Voltage Control Using DERs

This paper proposes an online data-driven distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) optimization method using chance-constrained formulation to address distribution system voltage regulation. This is achieved via the local sensitivity factor (LSF)-enabled reformulation of the DER control into a linear programming (LP) problem, which is easy and computationally efficient to solve. The LSF is estimated using online measurements and does not need the assumption of node load information. The latter is usually required for existing optimization-based methods but is difficult to obtain in practice. To mitigate measurement uncertainties, a scenario-based chance-constrained formulation is constructed. Compared with other control methods, the results carried out in a realistic distribution system show that the proposed method can effectively eliminate voltage violation issues.
