An overview of fatigue failures at the Rocky Flats Wind System Test Center

Potential small wind energy conversion (SWECS) design problems were identified to improve product quality and reliability. Mass produced components such as gearboxes, generators, bearings, etc., are generally reliable due to their widespread uniform use in other industries. The likelihood of failure increases, though, in the interfacing of these components and in SWECS components designed for a specific system use. Problems relating to the structural integrity of such components are discussed and analyzed with techniques currently used in quality assurance programs in other manufacturing industries.

HPC Molecular Simulation Tries Out a New GPU: Experiences on Early AMD Test Systems for the Frontier Supercomputer

Molecular simulation is an important tool for nu- merous efforts in physics, chemistry, and the biological sciences. Simulating molecular dynamics requires extremely rapid cal- culations to enable sufficient sampling of simulated temporal molecular processes. The Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Cray EX Frontier supercomputer installed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) will provide an exascale resource for open science, and will feature graphics processing units (GPUs) from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD). The future LUMI supercomputer in Finland will be based on an HPE Cray EX platform as well. Here we test the ports of several widely used molecular dynamics packages that have each made substantial use of acceleration with NVIDIA GPUs, on Spock, the early Cray pre-Frontier testbed system at the OLCF which employs AMD GPUs. These programs are used extensively in industry for pharmaceutical and materials research, as well as academia, and are also frequently deployed on high-performance computing (HPC) systems, including national leadership HPC resources. We find that in general, performance is competitive and installation is straightforward, even at these early stages in a new GPU ecosystem. Our experiences point to an expanding arena for GPU vendors in HPC for molecular simulation.

SWAS Spacecraft T/V Test, Unique In Chamber Tests Systems Actuation

The Sub-Millimeter Wave Astronomy Satellite (SWAS) is the third mission of the Small Explorer (SMEX) Project at Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). It is a path finding mission to study the chemical composition of interstellar galactic clouds to help determine the process of star formation. The spacecraft recently completed a month-long then-nal vacuum/thermal balance test in the Solar Environmental Simulator, the largest thermal vacuum facility at Goddard. Rather extensive fixturing was required for the test, considering the small size of the spacecraft, and two unusual deployments were completed in order to accomplish the goals of the test. This paper discusses the space simulation testing of the fully integrated SWAS spacecraft and the unique fixturing required.

MODEL DEVELOPMENT AND VERIFICATION OF A 1,350°C AIR RECEIVER TEST SYSTEM

Open-loop volumetric receivers work with air at atmospheric pressure and are suitable for single-cycle or multicycle power plants. A novel additively manufactured (AM) silicon carbide (SiC), ceramic matrix composite (CMC) volumetric receiver was developed that consisted of a lattice structure, which absorbs solar radiation and converts it into heat energy. Heat energy from the porous receiver was transferred to heated ambient air. The receiver acted as a convective heat exchanger, transferring heat to the fluid through convection. Engineering was facilitated to develop a high-temperature air receiver test bed at Sandia national Laboratories (SNL) capable of demonstrating a 50kWth open-loop volumetric SiC air receiver module developed by General Electric Aerospace Research (GE Aerospace). This paper presents the development of the high temperature AM SiC-CMC air receiver, the test bed, and the first testing operations of this device, which was experimentally demonstrated to achieve 1,350°C for over 3.5 hours of operation, based on input flux levels of 67–91 W/cm2 0.5-2.5 kg/s flow rates. From the test campaign results, based on the measured convective heat transfer to the airflow and bounded radiative-loss assumptions, the solar-thermal efficiency of HOTSSTAR test module was estimated to be approximately as high as 74% for representative test conditions.

The SuperCam Instrument Suite on the NASA Mars 2020 Rover: Body Unit and Combined System Tests

The SuperCam instrument suite provides the Mars 2020 rover, Perseverance, with a number of versatile remote-sensing techniques that can be used at long distance as well as within the robotic-arm workspace. These include laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), remote time-resolved Raman and luminescence spectroscopies, and visible and infrared (VISIR; separately referred to as VIS and IR) reflectance spectroscopy. A remote micro-imager (RMI) provides high-resolution color context imaging, and a microphone can be used as a stand-alone tool for environmental studies or to determine physical properties of rocks and soils from shock waves of laser-produced plasmas. SuperCam is built in three parts: The mast unit (MU), consisting of the laser, telescope, RMI, IR spectrometer, and associated electronics, is described in a companion paper. The on-board calibration targets are described in another companion paper. Here we describe SuperCam’s body unit (BU) and testing of the integrated instrument. The BU, mounted inside the rover body, receives light from the MU via a 5.8 m optical fiber. The light is split into three wavelength bands by a demultiplexer, and is routed via fiber bundles to three optical spectrometers, two of which (UV and violet; 245–340 and 385–465 nm) are crossed Czerny-Turner reflection spectrometers, nearly identical to their counterparts on ChemCam. The third is a high-efficiency transmission spectrometer containing an optical intensifier capable of gating exposures to 100 ns or longer, with variable delay times relative to the laser pulse. This spectrometer covers 535–853 nm ( $105\text{--}7070~\text{cm}^{-1}$ Raman shift relative to the 532 nm green laser beam) with $12~\text{cm}^{-1}$ full-width at half-maximum peak resolution in the Raman fingerprint region. The BU electronics boards interface with the rover and control the instrument, returning data to the rover. Thermal systems maintain a warm temperature during cruise to Mars to avoid contamination on the optics, and cool the detectors during operations on Mars. Results obtained with the integrated instrument demonstrate its capabilities for LIBS, for which a library of 332 standards was developed. Examples of Raman and VISIR spectroscopy are shown, demonstrating clear mineral identification with both techniques. Luminescence spectra demonstrate the utility of having both spectral and temporal dimensions. Finally, RMI and microphone tests on the rover demonstrate the capabilities of these subsystems as well.

Bid-in Price-Sensitive Load: A Comparison with Fixed Load in a Realistic Test System

Bulk power systems operations, in both simulation and practice, are often built on the principle of minimizing production costs, which assumes to first order that demand is fixed and that the only degrees of freedom for balancing generation and load are supply-side unit commitment and dispatch decisions. The purpose of this report is to interrogate the value of welfare-maximizing markets that not only physically balance demand and supply but also ensure that market outcomes provide consumer value by directly maximizing welfare, defined as the value of consumption minus production costs.

Integrated Off-Gas System Tests on the DM1200 Melter with RPP-WTP LAW Sub-Envelope C1 Simulants (Final Report)

The report documents melter and off-gas performance results obtained on the DM1200 during processing of LAW Sub-Envelope Cl feed. The principal objectives of the DM1200 melter testing were to demonstrate suitable processing and production rates for LAW Cl feed; characterize the glass product for elemental composition, the presence of organic compounds, and TCLP response for metals; and measure destruction and removal efficiencies (DREs) for organic compounds across the melter and off-gas treatment components. The feed was spiked with organic compounds for part of the testing duration. Data were collected for both process engineering needs and to support regulatory activities. The data needed for regulatory support were collected using EPA methods and independent data analyses and data checking were performed.

Nominal and adversarial synthetic PMU data for standard IEEE test systems

GridSTAGE (Spatio-Temporal Adversarial scenario GEneration) is a framework for the simulation of adversarial scenarios and the generation of multivariate spatio-temporal data in cyber-physical systems. GridSTAGE is developed based on Matlab and leverages Power System Toolbox (PST) where the evolution of the power network is governed by nonlinear differential equations. Using GridSTAGE, one can create several event scenarios that correspond to several operating states of the power network by enabling or disabling any of the following: faults, AGC control, PSS control, exciter control, load changes, generation changes, and different types of cyber-attacks. Standard IEEE bus system data is used to define the power system environment. GridSTAGE emulates the data from PMU and SCADA sensors. The rate of frequency and location of the sensors can be adjusted as well. Detailed instructions on generating data scenarios with different system topologies, attack characteristics, load characteristics, sensor configuration, control parameters are available in the Github repository - https://github.com/pnnl/GridSTAGE. There is no existing adversarial data-generation framework that can incorporate several attack characteristics and yield adversarial PMU data. The GridSTAGE framework currently supports simulation of False Data Injection attacks (such as a ramp, step, random, trapezoidal, multiplicative, replay, freezing) and Denial of Service attacks (such as time-delay, packet-loss) on PMU data. Furthermore, it supports generating spatio-temporal time-series data corresponding to several random load changes across the network or corresponding to several generation changes. A Koopman mode decomposition (KMD) based algorithm to detect and identify the false data attacks in real-time is proposed in https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/document/9303022. Machine learning-based predictive models are developed to capture the dynamics of the underlying power system with a high level of accuracy under various operating conditions for IEEE 68 bus system. The corresponding machine learning models are available at https://github.com/pnnl/grid_prediction.
