Formulation, Design and Experimental Verification of an Open Circuit Electro-Hydraulic Actuator

With the recent electrification trend in the fluid power area, more research has been incentivized to the proposal of cost-effective and energy-efficient solutions for hydraulic systems. Hence, electro-hydraulic actuator (EHA) architectures receive increasing attention. The paper proposes a novel open-circuit EHA architecture, with the goal to obtain a cost-effective mobile solution while maximizing the overall system efficiency. The proposed EHA is capable of meeting or exceeding traditional off-road machine performance, therefore enabling further electrification of off-road machines. Four-quadrant functionality, covering the full speed range, is achieved by a combination of a variable electro-hydraulic drive and valves with different functions and is validated by numerical as well as experimental methods. Here, a simulation model based on the Amesim environment and a dedicated test setup was developed to verify the performance. The good match between simulation and experimental results confirms the potential of the formulation approach of the proposed EHA for applications with different duty cycles and power levels.

SAS4A/SASSYS-1 Verification Testing for Sodium Fast Reactor Applications: Acceptance Testing Report

SAS4A/SASSYS-1 (SAS) is a simulation tool used to perform deterministic analyses of anticipated events as well as design basis and beyond design basis accidents for advanced liquid-metal-cooled nuclear reactors. With its origin as SAS1A in the late 1960s, the SAS series of codes has been under continuous use and development for over forty-five years and represents a critical investment in safety analysis capabilities for the U.S. Department of Energy. To support demonstration of software pedigree and confirm key functional requirements, this report has been generated to provide detailed verification of the software. Although SAS was developed to support the analysis of any liquid-metal-cooled nuclear reactor, the acceptance testing described in this document focuses on the verification of SAS capabilities as they relate to pool-type Sodium Fast Reactors (SFRs). This report includes documentation of the test problem definition, analytical solution(s), computational solution(s), acceptance criteria, comparisons of analytical/computational solutions, and determination of acceptance of the computational solution(s). Deviations from acceptance criteria are noted.

HLPW-4/GMGW-3: High-Order Discretization Technology Focus Group Workshop Summary

This paper summarizes the High-Order Technical Focus Group (HO-TFG) submissions for the joint 4th AIAA High Lift Prediction (HLPW-4) and 3rd Geometry and Mesh Generation Workshop (GMGW-3). The goal of the workshop was to assess the state-of-the-art in mesh generation and computational fluid dynamics software. The Common Research Model High-Lift (CRM-HL) variant served as the primary focus of the workshop, and a two-dimensional airfoil section from the CRM-HL was used as a verification test case. Here, the HO-TFG was tasked with generating high-order curved meshes for both geometries, and computing high-order solutions using both Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and scale-resolving formulations. While limited by computational resources, the final results demonstrate the potential of higher-order methods to increase solution accuracy with a lower degree-of-freedom count relative to second-order discretizations.

Apollo experience report: Guidance and control systems; lunar module mission programer

A review of the concept, operational requirements, design, and development of the lunar module mission programer is presented, followed by a review of component and subsystem performance during design-feasibility, design-verification, and qualification tests performed in the laboratory. The system was further proved on the unmanned Apollo 5 mission. Several anomalies were detected, and satisfactory solutions were found. These problems are defined and examined, and the corrective action taken is discussed. Suggestions are given for procedural changes to be used if future guidance and control systems of this type are to be developed.

Bending stresses due to torsion in cantilever box beams

The paper beings with a brief discussion on the origin of the bending stresses in cantilever box beams under torsion. A critical survey of existing theory is followed by a summary of design formulas; this summary is based on the most complete solution published but omits all refinements considered unnecessary at the present state of development. Strain-gage tests made by NACA to obtained some experimental verification of the formulas are described next. Finally, the formulas are applied to a series of box beams previously static-tested by the U.S. Army Air Corps; the results show that the bending stresses due to torsion are responsible to a large extent for the free-edge type of failure frequently experienced in these tests.

Flight Testing ALHAT Precision Landing Technologies Integrated Onboard the Morpheus Rocket Vehicle

A suite of prototype sensors, software, and avionics developed within the NASA Autonomous precision Landing and Hazard Avoidance Technology (ALHAT) project were terrestrially demonstrated onboard the NASA Morpheus rocket-propelled Vertical Testbed (VTB) in 2014. The sensors included a LIDAR-based Hazard Detection System (HDS), a Navigation Doppler LIDAR (NDL) velocimeter, and a long-range Laser Altimeter (LAlt) that enable autonomous and safe precision landing of robotic or human vehicles on solid solar system bodies under varying terrain lighting conditions. The flight test campaign with the Morpheus vehicle involved a detailed integration and functional verification process, followed by tether testing and six successful free flights, including one night flight. The ALHAT sensor measurements were integrated into a common navigation solution through a specialized ALHAT Navigation filter that was employed in closed-loop flight testing within the Morpheus Guidance, Navigation and Control (GN&C) subsystem. Flight testing on Morpheus utilized ALHAT for safe landing site identification and ranking, followed by precise surface-relative navigation to the selected landing site. The successful autonomous, closed-loop flight demonstrations of the prototype ALHAT system have laid the foundation for the infusion of safe, precision landing capabilities into future planetary exploration missions.

The reduction, verification and interpretation of MAGSAT magnetic data over Canada

Consideration is being given to representing the magnetic field in the area 40 deg N to 83 deg N by means of functions in spherical coordinates. A solution to Laplace's equation for the magnetic potential over a restricted area was found, and programming and testing are currently being carried out. Magnetic anomaly modelling is proceeding. The program SPHERE, which was adapted to function correctly on the Cyber computer, is now operational, for deriving gravity and magnetic models in a spherical coordinate system.

Midfidelity Model Verification for a Point-Absorbing Wave Energy Converter with Linear Power Take-Off

In the preliminary design stage of a wave energy converter (WEC), fast and reliable simulation tools are required. High-fidelity numerical models are usually employed to study the wave-structure interaction, yet the computational cost is demanding. Instead, mid-fidelity models provide simulations in the order of real time. In this study, Uppsala University WEC operates in a relatively mild sea state and is modeled using WEC-Sim. The model is verified based on OpenFOAM simulations. To analyze the ability of mid-fidelity model to capture the WEC dynamics, the system is investigated separately in 1, 2 and 3 DoF. The contribution of viscous phenomena is examined. Moreover, linear and weakly non-linear solutions provided by WEC-Sim are studied. The results obtained indicate that the viscous effects in heave and surge motion can be neglected but not for the pitch. The weakly non-linear WEC-Sim solution successfully agrees with the CFD, whereas the linear solution could drive to misleading results.

Optimizing MeV photon dose generation in laser-solid interactions via stable beam propagation

Bremsstrahlung MeV x rays with high doses are essential for radiography of dense objects. Intense, short-pulse laser-driven MeV x-ray sources offer a promising solution, but understanding how the dose scales with laser intensity is crucial for their development. While theory predicts a square root scaling with laser intensity, experimental verification has been hindered by significant shot-to-shot variations, often exacerbated by long preplasma scale lengths from low laser contrast. Here, we demonstrate low shot-to-shot dose variation and confirm the theoretical scaling using high-contrast OMEGA EP laser interactions with millimeter-thick tantalum foils, achieving MeV x-ray doses up to 5.4 rad at 1 m for E photon > 500 keV. Simulations reveal that the unique focal spot of the OMEGA EP laser enables efficient x-ray generation and reduced variability by facilitating deeper laser penetration into dense plasma, even with shorter preplasma scale lengths.
