Design of a pool boiler heat transport system for a 25 kWe advanced Stirling conversion system

The overall operating temperature and efficiency of solar-powered Stirling engines can be improved by adding a heat transport system to more uniformly supply heat to the heater head tubes. One heat transport system with favorable characteristics is an alkali metal pool boiler. An alkali metal pool boiler heat transport system was designed for a 25-kW advanced Stirling conversion system (ASCS). Solar energy concentrated on the absorber dome boils a eutectic mixture of sodium and potassium. The alkali metal vapors condense on the heater head tubes, supplying the Stirling engine with a uniform heat flux at a constant temperature. Boiling stability is achieved with the use of an enhanced boiling surface and noncondensible gas.

Flexible Solar Cells

Solar cell "modules" are plastic strips coated with thin films of photovoltaic silicon that collect solar energy for instant conversion into electricity. Lasers divide the thin film coating into smaller cells to build up voltage. Developed by Iowa Thin Film Technologies under NASA and DOE grants, the modules are used as electrical supply for advertising displays, battery rechargers for recreational vehicles, and to power model airplanes. The company is planning other applications both in consumer goods and as a power source in underdeveloped countries.

The Cost of Comfort in Your Home: Peak-Time Energy and Cost Savings from Setpoint Adjustment of Space Heating and Cooling

This poster presents the tradeoff between energy costs and thermal comfort in homes. Residential heating and cooling systems use a thermostat control to maintain a comfortable temperature range, but tighter temperature control leads to higher annual energy costs. We estimate the impact of temperature setpoint adjustment on annual energy costs using a residential building model developed at NREL. We show that increasing the allowable temperature range reduces energy costs in all five of the climate zones in the U.S. Annual costs reduced by about $100, with larger savings in areas with more heating and/or cooling loads.

Preliminary evaluation of a space AMTEC power conversion system

As original evaluation of a space solar energy source coupled with Alkali Metal Thermoelectric Conversion (AMTEC) is presented here. This study indicates that an AMTEC system would have 30 percent of the mass of a photovoltaic system and 70 percent of the mass of a Stirling cycle system at the 35-kWe level of power generation modules typical of the baseline for the U.S. Space Station. The operating temperatures and sodium heat pipe components for solar receiver/TES hardware (currently being developed by NASA) integrate well with AMTEC power conversion. AMTEC is therefore an attractive alternative specifically for space solar power generation.

Conversion of magnetic field energy into kinetic energy in the solar wind

The outflow of the solar magnetic field energy (the radial component of the Poynting vector) per steradian is inversely proportional to the solar wind velocity. It is a decreasing function of the heliocentric distance. When the magnetic field effect is included in the one-fluid model of the solar wind, the transformation of magnetic field energy into kinetic energy during the expansion process increases the solar wind velocity at 1 AU by 17 percent.

The emergent photophysics and photochemistry of molecular polaritons: a theoretical and computational investigation (Final Technical Report)

When molecules are placed between closely spaced mirrors, they interact strongly with the photons that are trapped between them, generating new quantum states which are no longer exclusively material nor photonic alone, but rather, coherent superpositions of both. These hybrid states are known as molecular polaritons, given that they arise from the strong interaction between the electric field of light and the electrical polarization of the molecules. Recently, experimental advances in nano‐ and microfabrication of molecular polariton architectures have successfully demonstrated their feasibility to control the rate and outcome of a certain class of chemical reactions in condensed phases. Importantly, these reactions proceed in strongly dissipative environments such as liquid solvents and lossy mirrors that allow for photons to escape from their confinement. The purpose of this research is to formulate quantum mechanical theories and computational tools that can elucidate the origin of these intriguing phenomena and simultaneously predict capabilities that this new generation of molecular materials affords. Attention is placed on harnessing polaritons to carry out photophysics and photochemistry that challenge currently existing paradigms, such as the optimization of energy conversion processes in organic solar cell or light‐emitting devices, or unconventional phenomena such as long‐range excitation energy transfer, remote control of chemical reactions, and a new quantum mechanical regime of chemical reactivity due to wavefunction overlaps amongst a large number of molecular polaritons (Bose condensation). This research explores a frontier of Chemistry and Physics where electrons, vibrations, and photons interact strongly with each other to generate emergent behavior that can be creatively exploited to address contemporary challenges in Basic Energy Sciences.

Contactless measurement of the photovoltage in BiVO 4 photoelectrodes

The power output of photoelectrochemical devices for solar energy-to-fuel conversion is determined by the photovoltage of the junction under illumination. In the presence of fast redox couples, the photovoltage can be obtained directly from current–voltage measurements of the device. However, for slow redox couples (H + /H 2 , O 2 /H 2 O) used in solar fuel photoelectrodes, photovoltage measurements are not straightforward, due to the kinetic overpotentials during charge transfer. Here we show that the photovoltage of BiVO 4 electrodes in contact with fast electron donors KI, Na 2 SO 3 or H 2 O 2 or K 4 Fe(CN) 6 can be measured in a contactless way with vibrating Kelvin probe surface photovoltage (SPV) spectroscopy. The photovoltage varies with illumination wavelength and intensity and matches the open circuit potential of the electrodes, obtained separately from electrochemical measurements. Plots of the photovoltage versus irradiance can be used to predict the oxidizing power of each electrode under zero applied bias. Except for K 4 Fe(CN) 6 , which causes shunting in the BiVO 4 electrode, photovoltage values correlate well with the built-in potential of each junction. Furthermore, the ability to obtain photovoltage information through contactless SPV measurements will be useful in the search for solid–liquid junctions with superior energy conversion properties.

The 2022 solar fuels roadmap

Abstract Renewable fuel generation is essential for a low carbon footprint economy. Thus, over the last five decades, a significant effort has been dedicated towards increasing the performance of solar fuels generating devices. Specifically, the solar to hydrogen efficiency of photoelectrochemical cells has progressed steadily towards its fundamental limit, and the faradaic efficiency towards valuable products in CO 2 reduction systems has increased dramatically. However, there are still numerous scientific and engineering challenges that must be overcame in order to turn solar fuels into a viable technology. At the electrode and device level, the conversion efficiency, stability and products selectivity must be increased significantly. Meanwhile, these performance metrics must be maintained when scaling up devices and systems while maintaining an acceptable cost and carbon footprint. This roadmap surveys different aspects of this endeavor: system benchmarking, device scaling, various approaches for photoelectrodes design, materials discovery, and catalysis. Each of the sections in the roadmap focuses on a single topic, discussing the state of the art, the key challenges and advancements required to meet them. The roadmap can be used as a guide for researchers and funding agencies highlighting the most pressing needs of the field.

In-situ thermophysical measurement of flowing molten chloride salt using modulated photothermal radiometry

Molten salts are leading candidates for high-temperature heat transfer fluids (HTFs) for thermal energy storage and conversion systems in concentrated solar power (CSP) and nuclear energy power plants. The ability to probe molten salt thermal transport properties in both stationary and flowing status is important for the evaluation of their heat transfer performance under realistic operational conditions, including the temperature range and potential degradation due to corrosion and contamination. However, accurate thermal transport properties are usually challenging to obtain even for stagnant molten salts due to different sources of errors from convection, radiation, and corrosion, let alone at flowing status. To the best of authors’ knowledge, there is no available in-situ technique for measuring flowing molten salt thermal conductivity. Here, we report the first in-situ flowing molten salt thermal conductivity measurement using modulated photothermal radiometry (MPR). We could successfully perform the first in-situ thermal conductivity measurement of flowing molten NaCl-KCl-MgCl 2 in the typical operating temperature (520 and 580 °C) with flow velocities ranging from around 0.3 to 1.0 m s -1 . The relative change of the molten salt thermal conductivity was measured. Gnielinski’s correlation was also used to estimate the heat transfer coefficient h of the flowing NaCl-KCl-MgCl 2 in the given experimental condition. Furthermore, the work showed the potential of the MPR technique serving as an in-situ diagnostics tool to evaluate the heat transfer performance of flowing molten salts and other high-temperature HTFs.
