VULCAN-CFD User Manual: Ver. 7.2.0

VULCAN-CFD offers a comprehensive set of capabilities to enable the simulation of continuum flowfields from subsonic to hypersonic conditions. The governing equations that are employed include allowances for both chemical and thermal nonequilibrium processes, coupled with a wide variety of turbulence models for both Reynolds-averaged and large eddy simulations. The software package can simulate two-dimensional, axisymmetric, or three-dimensional problems on structured multiblock meshes or fully unstructured meshes. A parabolic (i.e., space-marching) treatment can also be used for any subset of a structured mesh that can accommodate this solution strategy. The flow solver provides a significant level of geometric flexibility for structured grid simulations by allowing for arbitrary face-to-face C(0) continuous and non-C(0) continuous block interface connectivities. The unstructured grid paradigm allows for mixed element unstructured meshes that contain any combination of tetrahedral, prismatic, pyramidal, and hexahedral cell elements. The flow solver is also fully parallelized using MPI (Message Passing Interface) libraries in a data-parallel fashion, allowing for efficient simulations on modern High Performance Computing (HPC) systems. This document provides information related to the installation and execution of the VULCAN-CFD software package. A detailed description of the physical and numerical models available in the software are provided in the VULCAN-CFD Theory Manual.

A large scale software system for simulation and design optimization of mechanical systems

The concept of an advanced integrated, networked simulation and design system is outlined. Such an advanced system can be developed utilizing existing codes without compromising the integrity and functionality of the system. An example has been used to demonstrate the applicability of the concept of the integrated system outlined here. The development of an integrated system can be done incrementally. Initial capabilities can be developed and implemented without having a detailed design of the global system. Only a conceptual global system must exist. For a fully integrated, user friendly design system, further research is needed in the areas of engineering data bases, distributed data bases, and advanced user interface design.

Theoretical Tools and Software for Modeling, Simulation and Control Design of Rocket Test Facilities

A rocket test stand and associated subsystems are complex devices whose operation requires that certain preparatory calculations be carried out before a test. In addition, real-time control calculations must be performed during the test, and further calculations are carried out after a test is completed. The latter may be required in order to evaluate if a particular test conformed to specifications. These calculations are used to set valve positions, pressure setpoints, control gains and other operating parameters so that a desired system behavior is obtained and the test can be successfully carried out. Currently, calculations are made in an ad-hoc fashion and involve trial-and-error procedures that may involve activating the system with the sole purpose of finding the correct parameter settings. The goals of this project are to develop mathematical models, control methodologies and associated simulation environments to provide a systematic and comprehensive prediction and real-time control capability. The models and controller designs are expected to be useful in two respects: 1) As a design tool, a model is the only way to determine the effects of design choices without building a prototype, which is, in the context of rocket test stands, impracticable; 2) As a prediction and tuning tool, a good model allows to set system parameters off-line, so that the expected system response conforms to specifications. This includes the setting of physical parameters, such as valve positions, and the configuration and tuning of any feedback controllers in the loop.

Real-Time Simulation

Coryphaeus Software, founded in 1989 by former NASA electronic engineer Steve Lakowske, creates real-time 3D software. Designer's Workbench, the company flagship product, is a modeling and simulation tool for the development of both static and dynamic 3D databases. Other products soon followed. Activation, specifically designed for game developers, allows developers to play and test the 3D games before they commit to a target platform. Game publishers can shorten development time and prove the "playability" of the title, maximizing their chances of introducing a smash hit. Another product, EasyT, lets users create massive, realistic representation of Earth terrains that can be viewed and traversed in real time. Finally, EasyScene software control the actions among interactive objects within a virtual world. Coryphaeus products are used on Silican Graphics workstation and supercomputers to simulate real-world performance in synthetic environments. Customers include aerospace, aviation, architectural and engineering firms, game developers, and the entertainment industry.

A Unique Software System For Simulation-to-Flight Research

"Simulation-to-Flight" is a research development concept to reduce costs and increase testing efficiency of future major aeronautical research efforts at NASA. The simulation-to-flight concept is achieved by using common software and hardware, procedures, and processes for both piloted-simulation and flight testing. This concept was applied to the design and development of two full-size transport simulators, a research system installed on a NASA B-757 airplane, and two supporting laboratories. This paper describes the software system that supports the simulation-to-flight facilities. Examples of various simulation-to-flight experimental applications were also provided.

Hardware and software reliability estimation using simulations

The simulation technique is used to explore the validation of both hardware and software. It was concluded that simulation is a viable means for validating both hardware and software and associating a reliability number with each. This is useful in determining the overall probability of system failure of an embedded processor unit, and improving both the code and the hardware where necessary to meet reliability requirements. The methodologies were proved using some simple programs, and simple hardware models.

Psyche Hardware Abstraction Simulation Environment (PHASE): Development of High-Fidelity Downlink Model for Flight Software Performance Testing

NASA’s Katherine Johnson Independent Verification and Validation (IV&V) Independent Test Capability (ITC) Team develops high fidelity software-only simulations (or “digital-twins”) of NASA’s most critical missions that are then used for software verification and validation (V&V). One such digital-twin simulator nearing maturity is the Psyche Hardware Abstraction Simulation Environment (PHASE). PHASE utilizes an instruction set simulator along with ITC-developed avionics models. PHASE includes a newly-developed model of the telecom hardware with a high-fidelity downlink interface, capable of supporting reconfigurable downlink data rates and transmission modes. The different downlink transmission modes allow more processing to be ceded from software onto the telecom hardware. Thus, we are able to monitor the performance of the downlink software module in the time-partitioned OS and perform more realistic dynamic testing based on software’s resource utilization. This presentation will cover PHASE, avionics modeling, the downlink model, and its usage for flight software performance testing.

A Simulation Architecture for Air Traffic Over Urban Environments Supporting Autonomy Research in Advanced Air Mobility

As part of its research, NASA investigates concepts, aircraft, and operations related to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM). One of the most challenging scenarios for AAM will be enabling safe routine access near densely populated urban centers. AAM flight operations over a regional area require a moderately high-fidelity simulation capability to develop and evaluate autonomy technologies in the urban environment. This paper aims to describe a system to simulate flight operations around regions such as the San Francisco-Oakland Bay area at a moderately-high scale (tens to hundreds of flights) that incorporates detailed vehicle models and control necessary to support research in airborne autonomy. The flight vehicle utilizes NASA AAM concept vehicle dynamics integrated with a custom flight management system and flight control system to simulate all flight phases accurately. The simulation incorporates a detailed simulated urban environment and includes glass cockpit displays to monitor aircraft operations. Simulation models integrate to simulate air and ground-based sensors, such as Radar and LiDAR. As a commercially available rendering engine, X-Plane 11 is used as the renderer to simulate vision-based sensors (such as onboard and ground-based cameras) with a detailed graphical model of a city at different times of the day and weather conditions. This paper presents the simulation and software architecture used for simulating AAM traffic over this urban region. This system enables the evaluation of NASA research concepts in autonomy for urban AAM operations on the path toward flight test evaluation.

Functional evaluation of the Galileo attitude and articulation control subsystem using FUNSIM

The functional performance of the Galileo spacecraft's attitude and articulation control subsystem is evaluated. The tests are performed utilizing the simulation program developed on an IBM 370 system known as the Functional Simulation (FUNSIM). FUNSIM is an entirely software-based simulation which uses the actual flight software in HAL/S and simulated spacecraft dynamics in FORTRAN language. A description of how the test cases were selected to verify that the algorithms perform functionally correctly, and a summary of the problems encountered are included in the paper. The benefits of having an alternative test bed such as FUNSIM to the real-time simulation test beds which utilize the spacecraft hardware components in discovering the problems are described. A sample test case which shows that the desired tasks were performed functionally correctly is included in the paper. The commands in this test are selected to start the dual-spin spacecraft initially in launch mode and lead it all the way to inertial mode. Major attitude control algorithms such as rotor and platform attitude estimators, clock and core platform attitude estimators, clock and core platform controllers, and the command turn and burn are examined.
