Stage separation of parallel-staged shuttle vehicles, a capability assessment

The separation concept for stage separation of parallel staged space shuttle vehicles is discussed. The forward link separation concept is emphasized. The effects of aerodynamic interference and component mass are analyzed. Qualitative measurements used to perform a preliminary evaluation of various separation system concepts are presented. Line drawings are included to clarify the mechanisms and spacecraft structures used in stage separation.

Evaluation of an electrochemical N2/H2 gas separator

A program was successfully completed to evaluate an electrochemical nitrogen/hydrogen (N2/H2) separator for use in a spacecraft nitrogen (N2) generator. Based on the technical data obtained a N2/H2 separator subsystem consisting of an organic polymer gas permeator first stage and an electrochemical second and third stage was estimated to have the lowest total spared equivalent weight, 257 kg (566 lb), for a 15 lb/day N2 generation rate. A pre-design analysis of the electrochemical N2/H2 separator revealed that its use as a first stage resulted in too high a power requirement to be competitive with the organic polymer membrane and the palladium-silver membrane separation methods. As a result, program emphasis was placed on evaluating the electrochemical. A parametric test program characterized cell performance and established second- and third-stage electrochemical N2/H2 separator operating conditions. A design verification test was completed on the second and third stages. The second stage was then successfully endurance tested for 200 hours.

Separate surfaces for automatic flight controls.

The purpose of this paper is to describe an investigation of separate surface stability augmentation systems for general aviation aircraft. The program objective were twofold: first, a wind tunnel program to determine control effectiveness of separate surfaces in the presence of main surfaces, and hinge moment feedback from separate surfaces via the main surfaces to the pilot; second, a theoretical study to determine the minimum performance of actuators and sensors that can be tolerated, the best slaving gains to be used with separate surfaces, and control authority needed for proper operation under direct pilot control, under autopilot control, and in failure situations. On the basis of the results obtained, it has been concluded that separate surface systems are feasible and advantageous for use in general aviation aircraft.

Separation dynamics of S-II derivative launch vehicle

Computer program analyzes separation dynamics between two vehicles from time prior to separation to later time when separation may be considered complete. Program also may be used in evaluating various separation schemes and synthesizing separation systems by manipulation of data and various program options.

Boundary layer separation and reattachment

A review of developments in a new model for boundary-layer separation is presented. The separation model encompasses timevarying as well as steady-flow conditions. Engineering criteria in terms of calculable pressure gradients are obtained for both laminar and turbulent boundary-layer separation. These criteria, together with limited information on time-dependent separations, should be of value in predicting flows in turbomachinery. The reattachment of boundary layers is also shown to fit within the separation model.

Differential electrophoretic separation of cells and its effect on cell viability

An electrophoretic separation method was applied to the separation of cells. To determine the efficiency of the separation, it was necessary to apply existing methodology and develop new methods to assess the characteristics and functions of the separated subpopulations. Through appropriate application of the widely used isoelectric focusing procedure, a reproducible separation method was developed. Cells accumulated at defined pH and 70-80% remained viable. The cells were suitable for further biologic, biochemical and immunologic studies.

Flow processes in overexpanded chemical rocket nozzles. Part 1: Flow separation

An investigation was made of published nozzle flow separation data in order to determine the parameters which affect the separation condition. A comparison of experimental data with empirical and theoretical separation prediction methods leads to the selection of suitable equations for the separation criterion. The results were used to predict flow separation of the main space shuttle engine.

Experiments on supersonic boundary-layer separation in three dimensions

A detailed experimental study of three-dimensional separation in supersonic flow is described. Three-dimensional wedges affixed to flat plates were used to generate the flow fields that were used to examine the relationship of cross flow to the extent of separation. Models with strong transverse pressure gradients resulted in a diminished extent of separation about the model plane of symmetry but demonstrated expansive growth of separation to a limit with distance from the plane of symmetry. A secondary flow region was found embedded in the separated flow.

Space shuttle Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) separation

The system is described which is used to separate the solid rocket boosters from the space shuttle after they have expended most of their propellant and their thrust is near burnout. The dynamics of the separation are simulated in a computer program so that the separation system can be analyzed. The assumptions and ground rules used in analyzing this system are explained and the method of analysis is delineated. The capability of the separation system is presented together with data which may be used to aid in the design of the external tank and solid rocket booster interface. The results of a parameter study to determine the sensitivity of the separation to the initial state of the space shuttle are also presented.

Functioning of inorganic/organic battery separators in silver-zinc cells

The results of three experimental studies related to the inorganic/organic battery separator operating mechanism are described: saponification of the plasticizer, resistivity of the simulated separators, and zincate diffusion through the separators. The inorganic/organic separator appears to be a particular example of a general class of ionic conducting films composed of inorganic fillers and/or substrates bonded together by an organic polymer containing an incompatible plasticizer that may be leached by the electrolyte. The I/O separator functions as a microporous film of varying tortuosity with essentially no specific chemical inhibition to zincate diffusion.

Incidence angle bounds for lip flow separation of three 13.97-centimeter-diameter inlets

Low speed wind tunnel tests were conducted to establish a procedure for determining inlet-lip flow separation and to make preliminary examination of the incidence angle bounds for lip flow separation on inlets intended for the nacelles of STOL (short takeoff and landing) aircraft. Three inlets were tested. Two of the inlets had short centerbodies with lower lip area contraction ratios of 1.30 and 1.44. The third inlet had a cylindrical centerbody extended forward into the inlet throat with a lower lip area contraction ratio of 1.44. The inlets were sized to fit a 13.97 centimeter-diameter fan. For inlet throat Mach numbers less than about 0.43, the lip flow separation angle was increased by either increasing the ratio of throat velocity to freestream velocity (Vt/Vo) or by increasing the lower lip area contraction ratio. For throat Mach numbers greater than a certain value (ranging from 0.43 to 0.52), increasing throat Mach number in some cases resulted in a decrease in the lip flow separation angle. Extending a cylindrical centerbody into the inlet throat increased the flow separation angle for nearly all values of Vt/Vo.

Zero liquid carryover whole-body shower vortex liquid/gas separator

The development and evaluation of a liquid/gas vortex type separator design eliminating liquid and semi-liquid (suds) carryover into air recirculating system were described. Consideration was given to a number of soaps other than the "Miranol JEM" which was the low sudsing soap used in previous test runs of the space shower. Analysis of test parameters and prototype testing resulted in a revised separator configuration and a better understanding of the suds generating mechanism in the wastewater collection system. The final design of the new separator provides for a wider choice of soaps without leading to the problem of "carryover". Furthermore, no changes in separator-to-shower interfaces were required. The new separator was retrofitted on the "space shower" and satisfactorily demonstrated in one-g testing.

Modifications of the law of the wall and algebraic turbulence modelling for separated boundary layers

Various modifications of the conventional algebraic eddy viscosity turbulence model are investigated for application to separated flows. Friction velocity is defined in a way that avoids singular behavior at separation and reattachment but reverts to the conventional definition for flows with small pressure gradients. This leads to a modified law of the wall for separated flows. The effect on the calculated flow field of changes in the model that affect the eddy viscosity at various distances from the wall are determined by (1) switching from Prandtl's form to an inner layer formula due to Clauser at various distances from the wall, (2) varying the constant in the Van Driest damping factor, (3) using Clauser's inner layer formula all the way to the wall, and (4) applying a relaxation procedure in the evaluation of the constant in Clauser's inner layer formula. Numerical solutions of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations are used to determine the effects of the modifications. Experimental results from shock-induced separated flows at Mach numbers 2.93 and 8.45 are used for comparison. For these cases improved predictions of wall pressure distribution and positions of separation and reattachment are obtained from the relaxation version of the Clauser inner layer eddy viscosity formula.

Continuous-flow electrophoretic separator for biologicals

In the near absence of gravity, a continuous-flow type of electrophoretic separator can be operated with a much thicker separation chamber than is possible under 1 g conditions. This should permit either better resolution or shorter separation time per unit of sample. An apparatus to perform experiments on sounding rockets is under development and will be described. The electrophoresis cell is 5 mm thick by 5 cm wide with 10 cm long electrodes. It is supplied with buffer, sample, and coolant at about 4 C through the use of a passive refrigerant system. UV sample detection and provision for recovery and cold storage of up to 50 sample fractions are now being added to the basic unit. A wide range of operating conditions are electronically programmable into the unit, even up to a short time before flight, and a further range of some parameters can be achieved by exchanging power supplies and by changing gears in the motor drive units of the pump. The preliminary results of some separation studies on various biological products using a commercially available electrophoretic separator are also presented.

New separators for nickel-zinc batteries

Flexible separators consisting of a substrate coated with a mixture of a polymer and organic and inorganic additives were cycle tested in nickel-zinc cells. By substituting a rubber-based resin for polyphenylene oxide in the standard inorganic-organic separator, major improvements in both cell life and flexibility were made. Substituting newsprint for asbestos as the substrate shows promise for use on the zinc electrode and reduces separator cost. The importance of ample electrolyte in the cells was noted. Cycle lives and the characteristics of these flexible, low-cost separators were compared with those of a standard microporous polypropylene separator.

A study of a plume induced separation shock wave, including effects of periodic plume unsteadiness

A wind tunnel investigation was conducted to study the flow field in which separation is caused by an expanding plume, with emphasis on effects associated with periodic unsteadiness in the plume. The separation shock was photographed with high speed motion pictures, from which mean shock position and excursion data were reported. Pressure fluctuations were measured beneath the separation shock. A response of the separation shock to plume periodic unsteadiness was identified, and the magnitude of a corresponding transfer function was defined. Small harmonic effects in plume response to periodic unsteadiness were noted. The stabilizing effect of a lateral surface protuberance near the separation shock wave was investigated. The protuberance configuration was a lateral circular cylinder, and various diameters, all less than the boundary layer thickness, were employed.

Analysis of separation of the space shuttle orbiter from a large transport airplane

The feasibility of safely separating the space shuttle orbiter (140A/B) from the top of a large carrier vehicle (the C-5 airplane) at subsonic speeds was investigated. The longitudinal equations of motion for both vehicles were numerically integrated using a digital computer program which incorporates experimentally derived interference aerodynamic data to analyze the separation maneuver for various initial conditions. Separation of the space shuttle orbiter from a carrier vehicle was feasible for a range of dynamic-pressure and flight-path-angle conditions. By using an autopilot, the vehicle attitudes were held constant which ensured separation. Carrier-vehicle engine thrust, landing gear, and spoilers provide some flexibility in the separation maneuver.

Use of experimental separation limits in the theoretical design of V/STOL inlets

Experimental data from several model inlets are used to generate two parameters which are related to the limit of operation for inlet flow separation. One parameter, called the diffusion ratio, is the ratio of the peak velocity on the inlet surface to the velocity at the diffuser exit and is related to the boundary-layer separation at low throat Mach numbers. The other parameter, the peak Mach number on the inlet surface, is related to the separation at high throat Mach numbers. These parameters are easily calculated from potential flow solutions and thus can be used as a design tool in screening proposed inlet geometries. An illustrative example of an application to an inlet design study for a tilt nacelle VTOL airplane is presented. The value of contraction ratio required to meet the operating requirements yet allow the inlet to remain free of separation as indicated by the two separation parameters is shown.
