A new approximate sum rule for bulk alloy properties

A new, approximate sum rule is introduced for determining bulk properties of multicomponent systems, in terms of the pure components properties. This expression is applied for the study of lattice parameters, cohesive energies, and bulk moduli of binary alloys. The correct experimental trends (i.e., departure from average values) are predicted in all cases.

Dynamic compensatory pattern matching in a fuzzy rule-based control system

A dynamic compensatory matching procedure is suggested as a method to generate an aggregated measure for evaluating the appropriateness of rules for control systems. It is a dynamic weighted matching technique which takes into account incomplete information under real-time requirements. The initial weights of importance of variables are generated with a generalized neural network architecture and a gradient descent algorithm. An intuitive compensatory scheme based on correlations among input variables of training data is adopted so that the system is coherent to a noisy environment.

Myths and legends in learning classification rules

This paper is a discussion of machine learning theory on empirically learning classification rules. The paper proposes six myths in the machine learning community that address issues of bias, learning as search, computational learning theory, Occam's razor, 'universal' learning algorithms, and interactive learnings. Some of the problems raised are also addressed from a Bayesian perspective. The paper concludes by suggesting questions that machine learning researchers should be addressing both theoretically and experimentally.

A fuzzy controller with nonlinear control rules is the sum of a global nonlinear controller and a local nonlinear PI-like controller

The fuzzy controllers studied in this paper are the ones that employ N trapezoidal-shaped members for input fuzzy sets, Zadeh fuzzy logic and a centroid defuzzification algorithm for output fuzzy set. The author analytically proves that the structure of the fuzzy controllers is the sum of a global nonlinear controller and a local nonlinear proportional-integral-like controller. If N approaches infinity, the global controller becomes a nonlinear controller while the local controller disappears. If linear control rules are used, the global controller becomes a global two-dimensional multilevel relay which approaches a global linear proportional-integral (PI) controller as N approaches infinity.

WARP: Weight Associative Rule Processor. A dedicated VLSI fuzzy logic megacell

During the last five years Fuzzy Logic has gained enormous popularity in the academic and industrial worlds. The success of this new methodology has led the microelectronics industry to create a new class of machines, called Fuzzy Machines, to overcome the limitations of traditional computing systems when utilized as Fuzzy Systems. This paper gives an overview of the methods by which Fuzzy Logic data structures are represented in the machines (each with its own advantages and inefficiencies). Next, the paper introduces WARP (Weight Associative Rule Processor) which is a dedicated VLSI megacell allowing the realization of a fuzzy controller suitable for a wide range of applications. WARP represents an innovative approach to VLSI Fuzzy controllers by utilizing different types of data structures for characterizing the membership functions during the various stages of the Fuzzy processing. WARP dedicated architecture has been designed in order to achieve high performance by exploiting the computational advantages offered by the different data representations.

On slender-body theory and the area rule at transonic speeds

The basic ideas of the slender-body approximation have been applied to the nonlinear transonic-flow equation for the velocity potential in order to obtain some of the essential features of slender-body theory at transonic speeds. The results of the investigation are presented from a unified point of view which demonstrates the similarity of slender-body solutions in the various Mach number ranges. The transonic area rule and some conditions concerning its validity follow from the analysis.

General rules for metal aircraft construction

The Commissariat of Aviation deems it expedient to issue a few rules of a general character which should be followed by constructors in designing aircraft, into the manufacture of which metal enters to a considerable extent. The materials covered include: aluminum, duralumin, soft steel, high-resistance steel, in sheets, tubing, and shaped elements.

A correlation by means of transonic similarity rules of the experimentally determined characteristics of 18 cambered wings of rectangular plan form

The effects of one type of camber on the aerodynamic characteristics of rectangular wings at high subsonic and transonic speeds have been studied by applying the transonic similarity rules to the correlation of experimental data for a series of 18 cambered wings having NACA 63A2XX and 63A4XX sections, aspect ratios from 1 to 4, and thicknesses from 4 to 8 percent. The data were obtained by use of a transonic bump over a Mach number range of 0.6 to 1.1.

Applicability of the Hypersonic Similarity Rule to Pressure Distributions which Include the Effects of Rotation for Bodies of Revolution at Zero Angle of Attack

The analysis of Technical Note 2250, 1950, is extended to include the effects of flow rotation. It is found that the theoretical pressure distributions over drive cylinders can be related by the hypersonic similarity rule with sufficient accuracy for most engineering purposes. The error introduced into pressure distributions and drag effective cylinders by ignoring the rotation term in the characteristic equations is investigated.

On the application of transonic similarity rules to wings of finite span

The transonic aerodynamic characteristics of wings of finite span are discussed from the point of view of a unified small perturbation theory for subsonic, transonic, and supersonic flows about thin wings. This approach avoids certain ambiguities which appear if one studies transonic flows by means of equations derived under the more restrictive assumption that the local velocities are everywhere close to sonic velocity. The relation between the two methods of analysis of transonic flow is examined, the similarity rules and known solutions of transonic flow theory are reviewed, and the asymptotic behavior of the lift, drag, and pitching-moment characteristics of wings of large and small aspect ratio is discussed. It is shown that certain methods of data presentation are advantageous for the effective display of these characteristics.

A correlation by means of transonic similarity rules of experimentally determined characteristics of a series of symmetrical and cambered wings of rectangular plan form

Transonic similarity rules are applied to the correlation of experimental data for a series of related rectangular wings of varying aspect ratio, thickness, and camber. The data correlation is presented in two parts: the first part presents the correlation for a series of 22 wings having symmetrical NACA 63a-series sections; the second part is concerned with a study of one type of camber by correlation of the data for a series of 18 cambered wings having NACA 63a2xx and 63a4xx sections.

Some rules for polydimensional squeezing

The review of the following results is presented: For mixed state light of N-mode electromagnetic field described by Wigner function which has generic Gaussian form, the photon distribution function is obtained and expressed explicitly in terms of Hermite polynomials of 2N-variables. The momenta of this distribution are calculated and expressed as functions of matrix invariants of the dispersion matrix. The role of new uncertainty relation depending on photon state mixing parameter is elucidated. New sum rules for Hermite polynomials of several variables are found. The photon statistics of polymode even and odd coherent light and squeezed polymode Schroedinger cat light is given explicitly. Photon distribution for polymode squeezed number states expressed in terms of multivariable Hermite polynomials is discussed.

Rule based design of conceptual models for formative evaluation

A Human-Computer Interface (HCI) Prototyping Environment with embedded evaluation capability has been investigated. This environment will be valuable in developing and refining HCI standards and evaluating program/project interface development, especially Space Station Freedom on-board displays for payload operations. This environment, which allows for rapid prototyping and evaluation of graphical interfaces, includes the following four components: (1) a HCI development tool, (2) a low fidelity simulator development tool, (3) a dynamic, interactive interface between the HCI and the simulator, and (4) an embedded evaluator that evaluates the adequacy of a HCI based on a user's performance. The embedded evaluation tool collects data while the user is interacting with the system and evaluates the adequacy of an interface based on a user's performance. This paper describes the design of conceptual models for the embedded evaluation system using a rule-based approach.
