Cumulative listings of the R and D file data are presented. All Earth Resources Program information available at the Manned Spacecraft Center is in Vol. 1. Sensor data collected during flights over NASA test sites and from missions flown by subcontractors supporting the Earth Resources Survey Program are included in Vol. 2.
The research concerned with the liaison, interface, coupling, and technology transfer processes that occur in research and development is reported. Overviews of the functions of communication and coupling in the R and D processes, and the theoretical considerations of coupling, communication, and values are presented along with descriptions of the field research program and the instrumentation.
The methods are presented by which the scales and indicators are combined to provide measures of the variables used in the similarity propositions. These variables are constructs employed to describe the relationships among various phenomena occurring in R and D organizations. The character of these constructs as revealed by the characteristics of the measures derived from response patterns is presented. The reliability and validity of the measures are considered, and test procedures are discussed.
An attempt was made to identify social impacts, both beneficial and detrimental, which would or could flow from the introduction of advanced civil aviation systems. A broad range of social impact areas was investigated which included economic, environmental, political, sociological, psychological, legal, and urban/regional developmental factors. Data are arranged into two major parts. In the first part, a series of Major Policy Issues are identified and discussed which appear, on the basis of the social impact study, to merit serious consideration. The discussion of each "Issue' is presented both to explain its relevance and to raise considerations which will bear on its satisfactory resolution. The second part views the same overall body of information in a different manner: a series of "Findings' are pointed out from which more concrete guidance for R and D policy can be derived, and a set of "Candidate Basic Federal Undertakings' thus derived are presented.
An experimental investigation was conducted using the UARL 1.2-megw r-f induction heater to simulate thermal environment and fuel region characteristics expected in nuclear light bulb reactors. Argon was injected at the ends of the test chamber to provide radial-inflow vortex flow pattern. In some tests, simulated fuel consisting of a mixture of argon gas with either tungsten hexafluoride gas, uranium hexafluoride gas, or tungsten particles was injected into the discharge region from probes located at the centers of the end walls. The encouraging initial results obtained are discussed.
Expressions for band-to-band Auger recombination, including the effects of photoinduced carriers in intrinsic photoconductors, are presented. They show good agreement with the expressions published by van Vliet (1958) and Long (1967) for g-r noise in intrinsic photoconductors for the case of band-to-band radiative recombination.
Fluxgate magnetometer data obtained by OGO-5 near perigee were used to establish the existence of large field depressions in the magnetosphere under conditions of varying degree of disturbance at distances ranging from 2.3 to 3.6 R sub E at all local times. The results also provide the average delta B at these distances when Dst, as being derived at present, is zero.
Thermophysical properties data for oxygen at pressures below 5000 psia have been extrapolated to higher pressures (5,000-10,000 psia) in the temperature range 100-600 R. The tables include density, entropy, enthalpy, internal energy, speed of sound, specific heat, thermal conductivity, viscosity, thermal diffusivity, Prandtl number, and dielectric constant.
The design of a previously developed basic variable R load simulator was entended to increase its power dissipation and transient handling capabilities. The delivered units satisfy all design requirements, and provides for a high power, modular simulation capability uniquely suited to the simulation of complex load responses. In addition to presenting conclusions and recommendations and pertinent background information, the report covers program accomplishments; describes the simulator basic circuits, transfer characteristic, protective features, assembly, and specifications; indicates the results of simulator evaluation, including burn-in and acceptance testing; provides acceptance test data; and summarizes the monthly progress reports.
Because of the current high degree of interest in the development of a standard nonlinear test method, analytical and experimental comparisons have been made between the R-curve, COD, J-integral and nonlinear energy methods. A general definition of fracture toughness is proposed and the fundamental definitions of each method are compared to it. Experimental comparisons between the COD, J-integral, nonlinear energy and standard ASTM methods have been made for a series of compact tension tests on several aluminum alloys. Some of the tests were conducted according to the ASTM standard method E399-72, while the specimen thickness was reduced below the minimum requirement for plane strain fracture toughness testing for several other test series. The fracture toughness values obtained by the COD method were significantly higher than the toughness values obtained by the other three methods. All of the methods displayed a tendency to yield higher toughness values as the thickness was decreased below the ASTM plane strain requirement.
Visual and photoelectric observations of R Coronae Borealis are presented, including a number of observations surrounding the 1974 minimum. The recent visual history of the variable is examined and the discrete cloud obscuration model is considered.
Benefit-cost analysis is defined and some government investment criteria are discussed in relation to federal agency research and development program planning. The benefits of applied research and development are examined on the basis of a decision tree approach, and R and D project selection is considered, with attention paid to the multi-attribute problem.
Using the technique of heterodyne interferometry, measurements were made of the spatial distribution of 11 micron radiation from four late type stars. The circumstellar shells surrounding VY Canis Majoris, alpha Orionis, and alpha Scorpii were resolved, whereas that of R Leonis was only partially resolved at a fringe spacing of 0.4 sec.
A NASA method is described for forecasting remote sensing needs in the last decade of this century and for planning the necessary space system technology R&D. Five- and ten-year plans for earth observations in various disciplines are extrapolated forward to circa 1995 via a scenario which envisions major advances in remote sensing and information management. Space system studies identify the 'technology drivers', and development programs are initiated to develop the enabling technology. An example is given for a multipurpose large-aperture microwave radiometer spacecraft.
Observations of ultraviolet emission lines and continuum with the IUE observatory, H-alpha flux density and line profiles of H-alpha and forbidden O III lambda-5007 with the CTIO Fabry-Perot interferometer, and detection of the 85 GHz continuum with the 11 m dish of the NRAO are presented. Comments on their relation to previous work on R Aquarii are made.
