A Framework for Distributed Rover Control and Three Sample Applications

In order to develop quality control software for multiple robots, a common interface is required. By developing components in a modular fashion with well-defined boundaries, roboticists can write code to program a generic rover, and only require very simple modifications to run on any robot with a properly implemented framework. The proposed framework advances a Generic Rover that could be any rover, from Real World Interface's All Terrain Robot Vehicle Jr. series to the Fido-class rovers from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to any other research robot. Using these generic hardware interfaces, software designers and engineers can concentrate on the actual code, and not have to worry about hardware details. In addition to the hardware support framework, three sample applications have been developed to demonstrate the flexibility and extensibility of the framework.

The Fate of Trace Contaminants in a Crewed Spacecraft Cabin Environment

Trace chemical contaminants produced via equipment offgassing, human metabolic sources, and vehicle operations are removed from the cabin atmosphere by active contamination control equipment and incidental removal by other air quality control equipment. The fate of representative trace contaminants commonly observed in spacecraft cabin atmospheres is explored. Removal mechanisms are described and predictive mass balance techniques are reviewed. Results from the predictive techniques are compared to cabin air quality analysis results. Considerations are discussed for an integrated trace contaminant control architecture suitable for long duration crewed space exploration missions.

Information Management System for the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB)

A study was made to establish the requirements for an integrated state-wide information management system for water quality control and water quality rights for the State of California. The data sources and end requirements were analyzed for the data collected and used by the numerous agencies, both State and Federal, as well as the nine Regional Boards under the jurisdiction of the State Board. The report details the data interfaces and outlines the system design. A program plan and statement of work for implementation of the project is included.

In situ characterization of material extrusion printing by near-infrared spectroscopy

Material extrusion printing of reactive resins and inks present a unique challenge due to the time-dependent nature of the rheological and chemical properties they possess. As a result, careful print optimization or process control is important to obtain consistent, high quality prints via additive manufacturing. Here, we present the design and use of a near-infrared (NIR) flow through cell for in situ chemical monitoring of reactive resins during printing. Differences between in situ and off-line benchtop measurements are presented and highlight the need for in-line monitoring capability. Additionally, in-line extrusion force monitoring and off-line post inspection using machine vision is demonstrated. By combining NIR and extrusion force monitoring, it is possible to follow cure reaction kinetics and viscosity changes during printing. When combined with machine vision, the ability to automatically identify and quantify print artifacts can be incorporated on the printing line to enable real-time, artificial intelligence-assisted quality control of both process and product. Together, these techniques form the building blocks of an optimized closed-loop process control strategy when complex reactive inks must be used to produce printed hardware.

Arroyo Seco Improvement Program Annual Report for 2020

The Arroyo Seco Improvement Program is being carried out at Sandia National Laboratories, California in order to address erosion and other streambed instability issues in the Arroyo Seco as it crosses the Sandia National Laboratories, California. The work involves both repair of existing eroded areas, and habitat enhancement. This work is being carried out under the requirements of Army Corps of Engineers permit 2006-400195S and California Regional Water Quality Control Board, San Francisco Bay Region Water Quality Certification Site No. 02-01-C0987.

Development of LaRC 160/NR150B2 polyimide graphite hybrid composites

A method for co-curing NR150B2 and LaRC 160 prepregs into hybrid composites was developed. The processing characteristics and the properties of the hybrid composites were compared with those of laminates fabricated from the individual component prepregs. Resin forms were selected and optimized and a new NR150 formulation was investigated. The new formulation greatly facilitated the processing and the performance of this system. Quality control techniques were evaluated and developed, high quality laminates were fabricated from both individual resin systems, and hybrid laminates were successfully co-cured. Optimum hybrid forms were investigated and several novel approaches were explored. An optimum hybrid system was developed that utilizes a LaRC curing schedule but shows no degradation of mechanical properties after aging 500 hr in air at 260 C.

Intelligent Processing Equipment Projects at DLA

The Defense Logistics Agency is successfully incorporating Intelligent Processing Equipment (IPE) into each of its Manufacturing Technology thrust areas. Several IPE applications are addressed in the manufacturing of two 'soldier support' items: combat rations and military apparel. In combat rations, in-line sensors for food processing are being developed or modified from other industries. In addition, many process controls are being automated to achieve better quality and to gain higher use (soldier) acceptance. IPE applications in military apparel include: in-process quality controls for identification of sewing defects, use of robots in the manufacture of shirt collars, and automated handling of garments for pressing.

ARJUNA: An Electrochemical Interface Mapping Probe for Solid-State Batteries

Solid-state batteries (SSBs) are promising candidates for next-generation energy storage, although their performance can be compromised by interfacial heterogeneity within the electrolyte. Furthermore, ensuring the quality of large form-factors electrolyte film is crucial for establishing a robust manufacturing platform for solid-state batteries. Herein, we report on the use of ARJUNA, an electrochemical interface mapping system, to characterize heterogeneities at solid electrolyte interfaces and to serve as a quality control system for SSB manufacturing. In addition to spatial mapping, the proposed system can also probe the interface behavior as a function of pressure and temperature. We present the operating principle, design, instrumentation, and evaluation of the system alongside a typical hybrid solid electrolyte produced using two common manufacturing processes. This report showcases the capability of ARJUNA to probe the heterogeneity and quality of processed solid electrolyte films.

Cultured cardiac fibroblasts and myofibroblasts express Sushi Containing Domain 2 and assemble a unique fibronectin rich matrix

Highlights: • Cultured cardiac fibroblasts and myofibroblasts derived from normal human hearts express the novel marker SUSD2. • Under high density culture conditions, human cardiac myofibroblasts deposit a matrix scaffold rich in fibronectin. • Cultured dermal fibroblasts do not express SUSD2 and did not for form scaffolds in vitro. Cardiac fibroblasts and myofibroblasts assemble and maintain extracellular matrix during normal development and following injury. Culture expansion of these cells yield a bioengineered matrix that could lead to intriguing therapeutic opportunities. For example, we reported that cultured rat cardiac fibroblasts form a matrix that can be used to delivery therapeutic stem cells. Furthermore, we reported that matrix derived from cultured human cardiac fibroblasts/myofibroblasts converted monocytes into macrophages that express interesting anti-inflammatory and pro-angiogenic properties. Expanding these matrix investigations require characterization of the source cells for quality control. In these efforts, we observed and herein report that Sushi Containing Domain 2 (SUSD2) is a novel and consistent marker for cultured human cardiac fibroblast and myofibroblasts.
