Role of High-Spin Species and Pendant Amines in Electrocatalytic Alcohol Oxidation by a Nickel Phosphine Complex

We report the development of active and efficient electrocatalysts for oxidation of alcohols using earth-abundant metals will aid the progress towards a renewable energy economy. Here we present a detailed mechanistic study of electrocatalytic benzyl alcohol oxidation by a molecular nickel complex containing pendant amines using a combination of kinetic studies, NMR spectroscopy, and density functional theory. The catalyst preferentially binds alcohol in high-spin octahedral geometry, but this complex is not readily deprotonated by exogeneous base and inhibits catalysis. Dissociation of one or more solvent ligands returns the complex to a low-spin state that can be deprotonated. Kinetic modeling indicates the off-cycle high-spin intermediate lowers the catalytic turnover frequency by a factor of eight, suggesting that substantial gains in activity can be attained by improvements to the catalyst coordination geometry. In a second finding, we demonstrate the pendant amine of the catalyst only functions as a proton relay for the potential-determining step, oxidation of a nickel hydride intermediate, but does not have a substantial impact on the overall rate for oxidation of benzyl alcohol to benzaldehyde. This result contradicts the common expectation for pendant amines to participate in rate-limiting proton transfer reactions.

Angular Distribution of Dimuons from Drell-Yan Production in p+Fe Interactions at 120 GeV Beam Energy

In the E906/SeaQuest Fermilab experiment, we report a measurement of the angular distributions by measuring the angular parameters $\lambda$, $\mu$, and $\nu$ of Drell-Yan dimuons produced using a 120 GeV proton beam incident on an iron target. The angular distribution in the naive Drell-Yan model does not show any $\cos2\phi$ dependency, where $\phi$ denotes the azimuthal angle of dimuons in the Collins-Soper frame. However, pion-induced Drell-Yan experiments, such as NA10 and E615, have observed a significant dependence on $\cos2\phi$. The Boer–Mulders function, a transverse momentum-dependent distribution function, represents the correlation between the transverse spin and the transverse momentum of the quark. A non-zero Boer-Mulders function or an improved higher-order Drell-Yan model considering QCD effects can produce a $\cos 2\phi$ modulation in the Drell-Yan angular distribution. To measure the angular distributions, we have used an event mixing method to construct the combin atorial background, which was then subtracted from the data to isolate the Drell-Yan signal. Following this, we corrected the detector, trigger, and reconstruction efficiencies using a doubly-iterative Bayesian Unfolding method. This iterative unfolding technique improves the response matrix based on the results of the previous unfolding step, ensuring robust convergence without exaggeration of uncertainties. The angular distributions of the dimuons were measured over the invariant mass range $5.0 < M_{\mu^+ \mu^-} < 8.0$ $GeV/c^2$, with dimuon transverse momentum $P_T < 2$ GeV/c and Feynman-x $-0.18 < x_F < 0.9$. The measured angular distributions are then compared with the QCD calculations for $p + \text{Fe}$ interactions, and proton-induced angular distribution measurements from other experiments. We have observed weak $\cos 2\phi$ modulations as a function of $P_T$. For $P_T > 1.0 \, \text{GeV}/c$, the predicted NNLO perturbative QCD value of $\nu$ is larger than what we have me asured at E906/SeaQuest. Moreover, we have not observed a strong dependence of $\nu$ on the kinematic variables, such as dimuon mass $M_{\mu^+ \mu^-}$ and Bjorken-$x$. The spin alignment of the virtual photon, $\lambda$, measured from the SeaQuest Drell-Yan $p+\text{Fe}$ data, is found to be strongly dependent on $P_T$, decreasing as $P_T$ increases. $\lambda$ also holds to the upper bound condition $\lambda < 1.0$ within the statistical uncertainty, showing a trend similar to that predicted by NNLO perturbative QCD. However, for $1.0 < P_T < 2.0 \, \text{GeV}/c$, the extracted $\lambda$ value from SeaQuest is smaller than that predicted by perturbative QCD at NNLO.

Search for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW and axion-like particles mediating nonresonant ZZ or ZH production at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search has been performed for heavy resonances decaying to ZZ or ZW and for axion-like particles (ALPs) mediating nonresonant ZZ or ZH production, in final states with two charged leptons (ℓ = e, μ) produced by the decay of a Z boson, and two quarks produced by the decay of a Z, W, or Higgs boson H. The analysis is sensitive to resonances with masses in the range 450 to 2000 GeV. Two categories are defined corresponding to the merged or resolved reconstruction of the hadronically decaying boson. The search is based on data collected during 2016–2018 by the CMS experiment at the LHC in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . No significant excess is observed in the data above the standard model background expectation. Upper limits on the production cross section of heavy, narrow spin-2 and spin-1 resonances are derived as functions of the resonance mass, and exclusion limits on the production of bulk graviton particles and W' bosons are calculated in the framework of the warped extra dimensions and heavy vector triplet models, respectively. In addition, upper limits on the ALP-mediated diboson production cross section and ALP couplings to standard model particles are obtained in the framework of linear and chiral effective field theories. These are the first limits on nonresonant ALP-mediated ZZ and ZH production obtained by the LHC experiments.

Search for a new scalar decaying into new spin-1 bosons in four-lepton final states with the ATLAS detector

A search is conducted for a new scalar boson S, with a mass distinct from that of the Higgs boson, decaying promptly into four leptons ( ℓ = e , μ) via an intermediate state containing two on-shell, promptly decaying new spin-1 bosons Z d : S → Z d Z d → 4 ℓ , where the Z d boson has a mass between 15 and 300 GeV, and the S boson has a mass between either 30 and 115 GeV or 130 and 800 GeV. The search uses proton–proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV. No significant excess above the Standard Model background expectation is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the production cross-section times branching ratio, σ ( g g → S ) × B ( S → Z d Z d → 4 ℓ ) , as a function of the mass of both particles, m S and m Z d .

Double echo symmetry-based REDOR and RESPDOR pulse sequences for proton detected measurements of heteronuclear dipolar coupling constants

1 H{X} symmetry-based rotational echo double resonance pulse sequences (S-REDOR) and symmetry-based rotational echo saturation pulse double resonance (S-RESPDOR) solid-state NMR experiments have found widespread application for 1 H detected measurements of difference NMR spectra, dipolar coupling constants, and internuclear distances under conditions of fast magic angle spinning (MAS). In these experiments the supercycled $\text{R4}^2_1 (\text{SR4}^2_1)$ symmetry-based recoupling pulse sequence is typically applied to the 1 H spins to reintroduce heteronuclear dipolar couplings. However, the timing of $\text{SR4}^2_1$ and other symmetry-based pulse sequences must be precisely synchronized with the rotation of the sample, otherwise, the evolution of 1 H CSA and other interactions will not be properly refocused. For this reason, significant distortions are often observed in experimental dipolar dephasing difference curves obtained with S-REDOR or S-RESPDOR pulse sequences. Here we introduce a family of double echo (DE) S-REDOR/S-RESPDOR pulse sequences that function in an analogous manner to the recently introduced $t_1$-noise eliminated (TONE) family of dipolar heteronuclear multiple quantum coherence (D-HMQC) pulse sequences. Through numerical simulations and experiments the DE S-REDOR/S-RESPDOR sequences are shown to provide dephasing difference curves similar to those obtained with S-REDOR/S-RESPDOR. However, the DE sequences are more robust to the deviations of the MAS frequency from the ideal value that occurs during typical solid-state NMR experiments. In this work, the DE sequences are shown to provide more reliable 1 H detected dipolar dephasing difference curves for nuclei such as 15 N (with isotopic labelling), 183 W and 35 Cl. The double echo sequences are therefore recommended to be used in place of conventional S-REDOR/S-RESPDOR sequences for measurement of weak dipolar coupling constants and long-range distances.

Observation of electroweak production of two jets and a $Z$-boson pair

Electroweak symmetry breaking explains the origin of the masses of elementary particles through their interactions with the Higgs field. Besides the measurements of the Higgs boson properties, the study of the scattering of massive vector bosons with spin 1 allows the nature of electroweak symmetry breaking to be probed. Among all processes related to vector-boson scattering, the electroweak production of two jets and a $Z$-boson pair is a rare and important one. Here we report the observation of this process from proton–proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 recorded at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. We consider two different final states originating from the decays of the $Z$-boson pair: one containing four charged leptons and another containing two charged leptons and two neutrinos. The hypothesis of no electroweak production is rejected with a statistical significance of 5.7$σ$, and the measured cross-section for electroweak production is consistent with the Standard Model prediction. In addition, we report cross-sections for inclusive production of a $Z$-boson pair and two jets for the two final states.

Experimental study of 53 Cr via the (𝑑, 𝑝⁢𝛾) reaction

Excited states in 53 Cr were studied via the 52 Cr ⁢(𝑑, 𝑝⁢𝛾) reaction up to the neutron-separation threshold. Proton-𝛾 angular correlations and 𝛾 decay branching ratios were measured in particle-𝛾 coincidences between the Super-Enge Split-Pole Spectrograph (SE-SPS) and CeBr 3 Array (CeBrA) demonstrator of the John D. Fox Accelerator Laboratory at Florida State University. Previous spin-parity assignments from a (𝑑,𝑝) singles experiment at the SE-SPS are supported and 𝛾-ray transitions in 53 Cr are reported. We firmly assign higher-lying excited states to 53 Cr because overlapping excited states and contaminants could be identified better due to the complementary 𝛾-decay information. We also correct some of the previously reported excitation energies and present a reanalysis of previously measured 52 Cr (𝑑, 𝑝)⁢ 53 Cr angular distributions guided by the complementary 𝛾-ray information. Based on this reanalysis, the fragmentation of the neutron 2⁢𝑝 3/2 , 2⁢𝑝 1/2 , 1⁢𝑓 5/2 , 1⁢𝑔 9/2 , and 2⁢𝑑 5/2 single-particle strengths is reassessed for 53 Cr. Here, a comparison to the corresponding strengths in 55 Fe is presented.

Evolution of the j - 1 anomalous states of the j - 3 multiplets

We report in the nuclear shell model the j -1 anomaly is associated with unusual ordering of the j and j -1 states of a j -3 split multiplet. In the mass regions placed away from the doubly magic nuclei, the j-1 levels are found to be below the respective j states. The anomalous ordering of the levels is most prominent in the silver isotopic chain, but a similar effect is observed also in other systems with pure three-hole configurations. The correlation between the Δ E = E j-1 - E j energy splitting, observed in some odd-mass nuclei, and the even-even core's 2 + level energy is well pronounced in the (28,50) neutron and proton shells and to a lesser extent in the lower and higher (20,28) and (50, 82)

Search for new phenomena in events with two opposite-charge leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{\mathrm{s}} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

The results of a search for direct pair production of top squarks and for dark matter in events with two opposite-charge leptons (electrons or muons), jets and missing transverse momentum are reported, using 139 fb –1 of integrated luminosity from proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV, collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider during Run 2 (2015–2018). This search considers the pair production of top squarks and is sensitive across a wide range of mass differences between the top squark and the lightest neutralino. Additionally, spin-0 mediator dark-matter models are considered, in which the mediator is produced in association with a pair of top quarks. The mediator subsequently decays to a pair of dark-matter particles. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background, and limits are set at 95% confidence level. The results exclude top squark masses up to about 1 TeV, and masses of the lightest neutralino up to about 500 GeV. Limits on dark-matter production are set for scalar (pseudoscalar) mediator masses up to about 250 (300) GeV.

Determination of the relative orientation between 15 N- 1 H dipolar coupling and 1 H chemical shift anisotropy tensors under fast MAS solid-state NMR

Here, in this work, we have proposed a proton-detected three-dimensional (3D) 15 N- 1 H dipolar coupling (DIP)/ 1 H chemical shift anisotropy (CSA)/ 1 H chemical shift (CS) correlation experiment to measure the relative orientation between the 15 N- 1 H dipolar coupling and the 1 H CSA tensors under fast magic angle spinning (MAS) solid-state NMR. In the 3D correlation experiment, the 15 N- 1 H dipolar coupling and 1 H CSA tensors are recoupled using our recently developed windowless C-symmetry-based $C3^{1}_{3}$-ROCSA (recoupling of chemical shift anisotropy) DIPSHIFT and $C3^{1}_{3}$-ROCSA pulse-based methods, respectively. The 2D 15 N- 1 H DIP/ 1 H CSA powder lineshapes extracted using the proposed 3D correlation method are shown to be sensitive to the sign and asymmetry of the 1 H CSA tensor, a feature that allows the determination of the relative orientation between the two correlating tensors with improved accuracy. The experimental method developed in this study is demonstrated on a powdered U- 15 N L-Histidine.HCl·H 2 O sample.

Observation of a pseudoscalar excess at the top quark pair production threshold

A search for resonances in top quark pair ($t\overline{t}$) production in final states with two charged leptons and multiple jets is presented, based on proton–proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV , corresponding to 138 fb −1 . The analysis explores the invariant mass of the $t\overline{t}$ system and two angular observables that provide direct access to the correlation of top quark and antiquark spins. A significant excess of events is observed near the kinematic $t\overline{t}$ threshold compared to the non-resonant production predicted by fixed-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD). The observed enhancement is consistent with the production of a color-singlet pseudoscalar ($^1S^{[1]}_{0}$) quasi-bound toponium state, as predicted by non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics. Using a simplified model for $^1S^{[1]}_{0}$ toponium, the cross section of the excess above the pQCD prediction is measured to be $8.8^{+1.2}_{-1.4}$ pb.

Search for magnetic monopoles and stable particles with high electric charges in $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

We present a search for magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects using LHC Run 2 $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector. A total integrated luminosity of 138 fb –1 was collected by a specialized trigger. No highly ionizing particle candidate was observed. Considering the Drell-Yan and photon-fusion pair production mechanisms as benchmark models, cross-section upper limits are presented for spin-0 and spin-1/2 magnetic monopoles of magnetic charge 1g D and 2g D and for high-electric-charge objects of electric charge 20 ≤ |z| ≤ 100, for masses between 200 GeV and 4000 GeV. The search improves by approximately a factor of three the previous cross-section limits on the Drell-Yan production of magnetic monopoles and high-electric charge objects. Also, the first ATLAS limits on the photon-fusion pair production mechanism of magnetic monopoles and high-electric-charge objects are obtained.

Search for heavy pseudoscalar and scalar bosons decaying to a top quark pair in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for pseudoscalar or scalar bosons decaying to a top quark pair ($\textrm{t}$$\bar{\textrm{t}}$) in final states with one or two charged leptons is presented. The analyzed proton–proton collision data was recorded at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The invariant mass $m_{{\textrm{t}}{\bar{\textrm{t}}}}$ of the reconstructed $\textrm{t}$$\bar{\textrm{t}}$ system and variables sensitive to its spin and parity are used to discriminate against the standard model background. Interference between pseudoscalar or scalar boson production and the standard model $\textrm{t}$$\bar{\textrm{t}}$ continuum is included, leading to peak-dip structures in the $m_{{\textrm{t}}{\bar{\textrm{t}}}}$ distribution. An excess of the data above the background prediction, based on perturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations, is observed near the kinematic $\textrm{t}$$\bar{\textrm{t}}$ production threshold, while good agreement is found for high $m_{{\textrm{t}}{\bar{\textrm{t}}}}$. The data are consistent with the background prediction if the contribution from a simplified model of a color-singlet $^1\textrm{S}^{|1|}_0$ ${{\textrm{t}}{\bar{\textrm{t}}}}$ quasi-bound state $η_{\textrm{t}}$, inspired by nonrelativistic QCD, is added. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the coupling between the pseudoscalar or scalar bosons and the top quark for boson masses in the range 365–1000 GeV, relative widths between 0.5% and 25%, and two background scenarios with or without $η_{\textrm{t}}$ contribution.

Magnetic Moment of Proton Drip-Line Nucleus (9)C

The magnetic moment of the proton drip-line nucleus C-9(I(sup (pi)) = 3/2, T(sub 1/2) = 126 ms) has been measured for the first time, using the beta-NMR detection technique with polarized radioactive beams. The measure value for the magnetic moment is 1mu(C-9)! = 1.3914 +/- 0.0005 (mu)N. The deduced spin expectation value of 1.44 is unusually larger than any other ones of even-odd nuclei.

A search for exotic decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles, H → aa, where one decays into a photon pair and the other into a τ-lepton pair, is presented. Hadronic decays of the τ-leptons are considered and reconstructed using a dedicated tagger for collimated τ-lepton pairs. The search is performed in the mass range of the a boson between 10 GeV and 60 GeV. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background expectation. Model-independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the γγττ final state, B$$ \mathcal{B} $$(H → aa → γγττ), ranging from 0.2% to 2%, depending on the a-boson mass hypothesis.

Conceptual design of DIII-D experiments to diagnose the lifetime of spin polarized fuel

Abstract In magnetic fusion experiments, the cross sections for the D-T and D- 3 He fusion reactions are increased by as much as 50% if the fuel remains spin polarized parallel to the magnetic field. The goal of this study is to assess the feasibility of lifetime measurements of spin polarization, in magnetic fusion relevant conditions, on the DIII-D tokamak using relative changes in charged fusion product (CFP) loss measurements that depend upon the differential fusion cross section d σ /dΩ. Relative measurements that capture changes in the escaping CFP pitch, poloidal, and energy distributions are studied in two realistic TRANSP calculated plasma scenarios: (a) vector-polarized 3 He and D pellets are injected into a hot hydrogen plasma to produce thermonuclear reactions, and (b) a tensor-polarized deuterium pellet is injected into an L-mode hydrogen background plasma that includes unpolarized 3 He neutral beam injection. Ideal CFP signals in both scenarios show substantial pitch sensitivity to polarization for 14.7 MeV proton detection at a poloidal angle of − 56 ∘ (on the outer wall in the ion ∇ B direction), and strong sensitivity to polarization for 3.6 MeV alpha flux detection by an array of poloidal detectors. Energy-resolved measurements of 14.7 MeV protons are also sensitive to the degree of polarization for the − 56 ∘ port in the beam-plasma scenario. A realistic assessment of CFP signals in the thermonuclear scenario show count rates in the range of 2 × 10 4 cps for pitch-resolved proton detection and 2 × 10 5 cps for alpha flux measurements. Reduced chi-squared χ r 2 calculations show polarization lifetime measurements are feasible for either proton or alpha detection of both enhanced or suppressed polarization for the thermonuclear scenario. Measurements of gamma rays produced in the weak D + 3 He → γ + 5 Li branch complement the CFP measurements.

Search for dark matter production in association with a single top quark in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV

A search for the production of a single top quark in association with invisible particles is performed using proton-proton collision data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . In this search, a flavor-changing neutral current produces a single top quark or antiquark and an invisible state nonresonantly. The invisible state consists of a hypothetical spin-1 particle acting as a new mediator and decaying to two spin-1/2 dark matter candidates. The analysis searches for events in which the top quark or antiquark decays hadronically. No significant excess of events compatible with that signature is observed. Exclusion limits at 95% confidence level are placed on the masses of the spin-1 mediator and the dark matter candidates, and are compared to constraints from the dark matter relic density measurements. In a vector (axial-vector) coupling scenario, masses of the spin-1 mediator are excluded up to 1.85 (1.85) TeV with an expectation of 2.0 (2.0) TeV, whereas masses of the dark matter candidates are excluded up to 0.75 (0.55) TeV with an expectation of 0.85 (0.65) TeV.

Two photon exchange with nuclei from $e^+/e^-$ elastic cross section ratios

Hadronic box diagrams pose a significant source of radiative corrections to lepton scattering and β -decay measurements, yet their calculation remains highly model-dependent. Two-photon exchange is a box diagram generally relevant to most lepton scattering experiments, and is directly detectable via multiple observables. Single-spin asymmetries (SSA) are sensitive to the imaginary part of the TPE amplitude, while the ratio of $e^+/e^-$ elastic scattering cross sections is sensitive to the real part of the TPE amplitude. While SSA measurements have been reported for several complex nuclei, measurements of the $e^+/e^-$ ratio exist only for the proton. Proposed here is a measurement of the $e^+/e^-$ ratio on 4 He, a feasible nuclear target for which the ratio’s deviation from unity due to TPE is expected to be on order of 1–2%. Choosing a low Z nucleus minimizes Coulomb distortions, which could greatly overwhelm TPE for heavier nuclei. The proposed 19-day program, including measurements at three kinematic settings between 0.3 < Q 2 < 0.4 GeV 2 , would be made possible by the addition of a positron source at Jefferson Lab.
