Multiphase Modeling in a Parallel Plate Fluidized Bed Receiver for Concentrating Solar Power

A novel high temperature particle solar receiver is developed by using a light trapping planar cavity configuration. As particles fall through the cavity, the concentrated solar radiation warms the boundaries of the receiver and in turn heats the particles. Particles flow through the system, forming a packed bed at the lower end, leaving the system from the bottom at a constant flow rate. Air is introduced to the system as the fluidizing medium to improve particle heat transfer and mixing. A laboratory scale cavity receiver is built and a near IR quartz lamp is used to provide flux to the vertical wall of the heat exchanger. The system is modeled using a continuum two-fluid method. The computational model matches the experimental system size and the particle size distribution is assumed monodisperse. A conduction model that accounts for the effects of solid concentration is implemented, and the heat flux boundary condition matches the experimental setup. Radiative heat transfer is estimated using a widely used correlation during the post-processing step to determine an overall heat transfer coefficient. The model is validated against testing data and achieves less than 30% discrepancy and a heat transfer coefficient greater than 1000 W/m2K.

Structural response of α-quartz under plate-impact shock compression

Because of its far-reaching applications in geophysics and materials science, quartz has been one of the most extensively examined materials under dynamic compression. Despite 50 years of active research, questions remain concerning the structure and transformation of SiO 2 under shock compression. Continuum gas-gun studies have established that under shock loading quartz transforms through an assumed mixed-phase region to a dense high-pressure phase. While it has often been assumed that this high-pressure phase corresponds to the stishovite structure observed in static experiments, there have been no crystal structure data confirming this. In this study, we use gas-gun shock compression coupled with in situ synchrotron x-ray diffraction to interrogate the crystal structure of shock-compressed α-quartz up to 65 GPa. Our results reveal that α-quartz undergoes a phase transformation to a disordered metastable phase as opposed to crystalline stishovite or an amorphous structure, challenging long-standing assumptions about the dynamic response of this fundamental material.

Ballistic characterization of additively manufactured extrusion deposited thermoplastic composite plates

Additive manufacturing (AM) is rapidly emerging in high performance applications such as army ground vehicles, automotive and transportation. However, the response of AM parts/components to extreme loading such as high velocity impacts is less studied. In this work, the performance under ballistic impact of AM panels is evaluated using a medium velocity gas gun, generating projectile velocities up to 400 m/s. The preferential print orientation properties are considered in order to evaluate whether the panels exhibit isotropic or anisotropic behavior under impact. Surface morphology is investigated by milling the beads smooth on samples and comparing the impact on as-printed samples to those that are smoothed. The effect of nickel chromium micron (nichrome) wire embedded in the AM panels (during print) of polycarbonate-carbon fiber (PC-CF) and polycarbonate-glass fiber (PC-GF) are explored. Thermoplastic polyurethane-acrylonitrile butadiene styrene/carbon fiber (TPU-ABS/CF), Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene-carbon-fiber (ABS-CF) AM samples absorbed >50% of the impact energy. The ballistic performance was noted to be in the following order – ABS-CF > TPU-ABS/CF > PC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was conducted to study the interface between the nichrome wire and the polymer-fiber matrix. This work is the first of its kind exploring into the capabilities of AM panels as ballistic materials. This study leads the way for developing AM panels that are easily manufactured and exhibit superior ballistic resistance.

(U) Validation and Optimization of a 1-Dimensional Quasi-Isentropic Compression Model Using a Functionally Graded Material Flyer Plate

The fields studying highly compressed materials have been around for many years. These fields have given birth to better understandings of the solar fusion cycle and the liquid-metallic core of Jupiter. The highest pressures achieved have been at the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and more recently, the Z-Machine. One method to achieve higher levels of compression is to use quasi-isentropic (QI) compression. In practice, this means minimizing the amount of temperature increase of the target material. In their paper, J.H. Nguyen et. al. manufactured a functionally graded material (FGM) in order to help them achieve QI compression. The aim of the study described in this paper is to validate a 1-dimensional (1D) FLAG model that uses an FGM flyer to compress a copper (Cu) target. Once validated, the density/composition profile of the FGM is varied and optimized using Markov Chain Monte Carlo, specifically using a Metropolis-Hastings algorithm to find the optimal FGM profile that minimizes the temperature increase in the copper.

A parallel-plate avalanche counter for the prompt fission neutron spectrum measurement

Neutrons, gamma’s, and fission fragments are among the prompt fission observables. Their precision measurements are fundamental to advance our understanding of fission and any application of fission. For our programmatic need, the χ matrix, which defines as the outgoing neutron spectrum as a function of incoming neutron energy, is sparsely populated and poorly measured for 233,235,238 U and 239,240 Pu. To improve the quality of those χ matrices, a joint LANLLLNL project was undertaken to measure their prompt fission neutron spectra at the LANSCE/WNR facility using neutron detector arrays and a charged-particle detector for the fission-fragment detection. A typical setup is shown in Fig. 1, where one of neutron detector array with a charged-particle detector is given.

Final Design for Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments using High 240 Pu Content Plutonium/Aluminum Zero Power Research Reactor Plates with Polyethylene Moderator (IER 520 Final Design CED-2 Report)

The US Department of Energy Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) convened a multinational Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) meeting in July of 2011 to discuss the data and experimental needs of criticality safety practitioners. The number one and two priority integral experiment data needs were for 239 Pu and 240 Pu, with special emphasis on cross section performance in the intermediate energy range (from 0.625 eV to 100 keV). LLNL measured five critical configurations with LANL for the plutonium test bed (IER-184) and published the experiments as International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project evaluation PUMET-MIXED-002. Modeling of the benchmark configurations using ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data showed significant overprediction of reactivity for configurations that had a large percentage of fissions in the intermediate energy regime. This report documents a variation on the TEX plutonium test bed to provide a test of 240 Pu cross sections, with sensitivity of the configuration to 240 Pu radiative capture and fission cross sections a priority for the design.

Numerical Modeling of the Effects of Coating Plates on Terminal Ballistic Performance

This report deals with the development and evaluation of a numerical model to examine applied coating to a metal substrate subjected to a ballistic impact. The numerical model will be used to examine the benefit of the coating in resisting penetration due to the impact. For a detailed examination the Retch-Ipson curve is used as a metric. The numerical data is plotted and then fit to the Retch-Ipson curve and error calculations are used to compare the difference between the numerical output and the experimental data. This initial study is an examination of a few shortcomings of the standard material models used, and demonstrate the future work that is needed to understand the ballistic behavior of materials.

Experimental Study of Fixed Plate Insert for Window Protection

Evidenced from experiments to date, NorthStar can expect that potentially significant changes in the target cooling passages are likely due to disk shape changes by thermal distortions or breakage. In the bulk of the target the result will be increased He flow in some channels and decreased flow in others.
