Sub-micron surface plasmon resonance sensor systems

A sensor for detecting the presence of a target analyte, ligand or molecule in a test fluid, comprising a light transmissive substrate on which an array of surface plasmon resonant (SPR) elements is mounted is described. A multi-channel sensor for detecting the presence of several targets with a single micro-chip sensor is described. A multi-channel sensor including collections of SPR elements which are commonly functionalized to one of several targets is also described. The detectors sense changes in the resonant response of the SPR elements indicative of binding with the targets.

Sub-micron surface plasmon resonance sensor systems

Wearable or implantable devices combining microfluidic control of sample and reagent flow and micro-cavity surface plasmon resonance sensors functionalized with surface treatments or coatings capable of specifically binding to target analytes, ligands, or molecules in a bodily fluid are provided. The devices can be used to determine the presence and concentration of target analytes in the bodily fluids and thereby help diagnose, monitor or detect changes in disease conditions.

Design of high-transmission plasmonic wavelength and polarization filters for infrared photodetectors

We have designed plasmonic filters that simultaneously perform wavelength and polarization filtering in the wavelength range 3-5 micrometers. In this work we outline the design and present the simulated results of our filters. The filters consist of sub wavelength slits in a thin metal sheet which is deposited on top of a gallium antimonide (GaSb) substrate and a spacer layer of SiO2. This configuration makes our filters suitable for integration with GaSb based infrared photodetectors and photodetector arrays that are used in space applications. Our work opens up the possibility of using these detector arrays for highly compact Earth-observing infrared polarimeters and multispectral imaging applications.

System and method for plasmonic control of short pulses in optical fibers

The present disclosure relates to an optical waveguide system. The system has a first waveguide having a core-guide and a cladding material portion surrounding and encasing the core-guide to form a substantially D-shaped cross sectional profile with an exposed flat section running along a length thereof. The core-guide enables a core-guide mode for an optical pulse signal having a first characteristic, travelling through the core-guide. A material layer of non-linear material is used which forms a second waveguide. The material layer is disposed on the exposed flat section of the cladding material portion. The material layer forms a plasmonic device to achieve a desired coupling with the core-guide to couple optical energy travelling through the core-guide into the material layer to modify the optical energy travelling through the core-guide such that the optical energy travelling through the core-guide has a second characteristic different from the first characteristic.

Plasmon-Assisted Directional Infrared Photoluminescence of HgTe Nanocrystals

HgTe nanocrystals offer a unique spectral tunability with both absorption and emission covering the near and mid-infrared as well as the THz window. Nevertheless, a very limited amount of work is dedicated to electroluminescence from this material. An efficient diode not only requires designing a structure that achieves a high electrical efficiency (i.e., efficient electron and hole injections), but also finding a way to efficiently extract the emitted photons. The shift from visible to infrared certainly demands revisiting the strategies proposed for shorter wavelengths (microlens arrays). Here, a metallic grating is used to enhance the photoluminscence signal up to a factor of 4 while enabling directionality in the emission, which is driven by the grating period.
