Stabilization of nonlinear systems using linear observers

It is shown that a linear observer can always be employed to stabilize a nonlinear system which contains a true Popov type nonlinearity in the closed interval from 0 to k, where k is finite, provided the nonlinear function and a completely observable output of the linear portion are available as inputs to the observer. Taking into consideration the case in which a completely observable output is not available from the linear portion, stabilization is shown to be possible if the original linear approximation of the system is asymptotically stable.

Estimation of material properties of a nonlinearly elastic bar

A method of determining certain characteristic flexural rigidities and elastic properties of nonlinearly elastic materials is presented. An estimation method utilizing perturbation methods and a least squares fitting technique is used to solve the nonlinear differential equation derived from the moment curvature relation, subject to boundary values representing deflections of the bar at discrete points. Deflection data from numerical simulations of a nonlinearly elastic, prismatic bar are used to demonstrate the estimation method. Numerical experiments relating the accuracy of the identification to the number and accuracy of the boundary values are presented. Conclusions based on the numerical experiments are included.

Nonlinear equations of motion for the elastic bending and torsion of twisted nonuniform rotor blades

The equations of motion are developed by two complementary methods, Hamilton's principle and the Newtonian method. The resulting equations are valid to second order for long, straight, slender, homogeneous, isotropic beams undergoing moderate displacements. The ordering scheme is based on the restriction that squares of the bending slopes, the torsion deformation, and the chord/radius and thickness/radius ratios are negligible with respect to unity. All remaining nonlinear terms are retained. The equations are valid for beams with mass centroid axis and area centroid (tension) axis offsets from the elastic axis, nonuniform mass and stiffness section properties, variable pretwist, and a small precone angle. The strain-displacement relations are developed from an exact transformation between the deformed and undeformed coordinate systems. These nonlinear relations form an important contribution to the final equations. Several nonlinear structural and inertial terms in the final equations are identified that can substantially influence the aeroelastic stability and response of hingeless helicopter rotor blades.

A class of finite dimensional optimal nonlinear estimators

Finite dimensional optimal nonlinear state estimators are derived for bilinear systems evolving on nilpotent and solvable Lie groups. These results are extended to other classes of systems involving polynomial nonlinearities. The concepts of exact differentials and path-independent integrals are used to derive optimal finite dimensional estimators for a further class of nonlinear systems.

Suppression of nonlinear oscillations in combustors with partial length acoustic liners

An analytical model is formulated for a three-dimensional nonlinear stability problem in a rocket motor combustion chamber. The chamber is modeled as a right circular cylinder with a short (multi-orifice) nozzle, and an acoustic linear covering an arbitrary portion of the cylindrical periphery. The combustion is concentrated at the injector and the gas flow field is characterized by a mean Mach number. The unsteady combustion processes are formulated using the Crocco time lag model. The resulting equations are solved using a Green's function method combined with numerical evaluation techniques. The influence of acoustic liners on the nonlinear waveforms is predicted. Nonlinear stability limits and regions where triggering is possible are also predicted for both lined and unlined combustors in terms of the combustion parameters.

NOLIN: A nonlinear laminate analysis program

A nonlinear, plane-stress, laminate analysis program, NOLIN, was developed which accounts for laminae nonlinearity under inplane shear and transverse extensional stress. The program determines the nonlinear stress-strain behavior of symmetric laminates subjected to any combination of inplane shear and biaxial extensional loadings. The program has the ability to treat different stress-strain behavior in tension and compression, and predicts laminate failure using any or all of maximum stress, maximum strain, and quadratic interaction failure criteria. A brief description of the program is presented including discussion of the flow of information and details of the input required. Sample problems and a complete listing of the program is also provided.

NASTRAN nonlinear vibration analysis of beam and frame structures

A capability for the nonlinear vibration analysis of beam and frame structures suitable for use with NASTRAN level 15.5 is described. The nonlinearity considered is due to the presence of axial loads induced by longitudinal end restraints and lateral displacements that are large compared to the beam height. A brief discussion is included of the mathematical analysis and the geometrical stiffness matrix for a prismatic beam (BAR) element. Also included are a brief discussion of the equivalent linearization iterative process used to determine the nonlinear frequency, the required modifications to subroutines DBAR and XMPLBD of the NASTRAN code, and the appropriate vibration capability, four example problems are presented. Comparisons with existing experimental and analytical results show that excellent accuracy is achieved with NASTRAN in all cases.

Nonlinearities in analyses of unsteady flow around oscillating wings

An analysis of nonlinearities involved in unsteady subsonic viscous flow around wings at high Reynolds numbers is presented. The finite element method was applied for the numerical integration of the vorticity transport equations. Physical and numerical aspects of the nonlinearities are discussed. Magnification of nonlinearities in the convection terms near wing surfaces due to changing geometry at leading and trailing edges of the wing chord is determined. As a bubble is generated near the leading edge, the timewise variation of vorticity and pressure distributions over the surface is shown. The different procedures for the integration of the vorticity transport equations in three dimensions along spanwise, chordwise, and normal directions are discussed.

Jump resonant frequency islands in nonlinear feedback control systems

A new type of jump resonance is predicted and observed in certain nonlinear feedback control systems. The new jump resonance characteristic is described as a 'frequency island' due to the fact that a portion of the input-output transfer characteristic is disjoint from the main body. The presence of such frequency islands was predicted by using a sinusoidal describing function characterization of the dynamics of an inertial gyro employing nonlinear ternary rebalance logic. While the general conditions under which such islands are possible has not been examined, a numerical approach is presented which can aid in establishing their presence. The existence of the frequency islands predicted for the ternary rebalanced gyro was confirmed by simulating the nonlinear system and measuring the transfer function.

Theoretical and experimental comparisons of the nonlinear energy method to the J-integral, R-curve and COD methods in fracture toughness testing

Because of the current high degree of interest in the development of a standard nonlinear test method, analytical and experimental comparisons have been made between the R-curve, COD, J-integral and nonlinear energy methods. A general definition of fracture toughness is proposed and the fundamental definitions of each method are compared to it. Experimental comparisons between the COD, J-integral, nonlinear energy and standard ASTM methods have been made for a series of compact tension tests on several aluminum alloys. Some of the tests were conducted according to the ASTM standard method E399-72, while the specimen thickness was reduced below the minimum requirement for plane strain fracture toughness testing for several other test series. The fracture toughness values obtained by the COD method were significantly higher than the toughness values obtained by the other three methods. All of the methods displayed a tendency to yield higher toughness values as the thickness was decreased below the ASTM plane strain requirement.

Nonlinear analysis of bonded joints with thermal effects

Nonlinear results are presented for adhesive bonded joints. It is shown that adhesive nonlinearities are only significant in the predicted adhesive shear stresses. Adherend nonlinearities and temperature dependent properties are shown to have little effect upon the adhesive stress predictions under mechanical and thermal loadings.

Description of a computer program and numerical techniques for developing linear perturbation models from nonlinear systems simulations

A numerical technique was developed which generates linear perturbation models from nonlinear aircraft vehicle simulations. The technique is very general and can be applied to simulations of any system that is described by nonlinear differential equations. The computer program used to generate these models is discussed, with emphasis placed on generation of the Jacobian matrices, calculation of the coefficients needed for solving the perturbation model, and generation of the solution of the linear differential equations. An example application of the technique to a nonlinear model of the NASA terminal configured vehicle is included.

Spread F bubbles - Nonlinear Rayleigh-Taylor mode in two dimensions

The paper discusses long-wavelength developed bottomside spread F which has been attributed to the Rayleigh-Taylor instability. The nonlinear saturation amplitude and the k spectrum of the inertia-dominated Rayleigh-Taylor instability is found in two directions: east-west and vertical. As in the collisional case (Chaturvedi and Ossakow, 1977), the dominant nonlinearity is found to be two-dimensional. It is found that the linearly most unstable modes, which are primarily horizontal, saturate by the nonlinear generation of vertical spatial harmonics. The harmonics are damped by diffusion or recombination. The resulting amplitude spectrum indicates that bubbles are vertically elongated in both inertial and collisional regimes.

Nonlinear dynamic response of wind turbine rotors

The nonlinear equations of motion for a rigid rotor restrained by three flexible springs representing the flapping, lagging and feathering motions are derived using Lagrange's equations for arbitrary angular rotations. These are reduced to a consistent set of nonlinear equations using nonlinear terms up to third order.

Investigation of nonlinear motion simulator washout schemes

An overview is presented of some of the promising washout schemes which have been devised. The four schemes presented fall into two basic configurations; crossfeed and crossproduct. Various nonlinear modifications further differentiate the four schemes. One nonlinear scheme is discussed in detail. This washout scheme takes advantage of subliminal motions to speed up simulator cab centering. It exploits so-called perceptual indifference thresholds to center the simulator cab at a faster rate whenever the input to the simulator is below the perceptual indifference level. The effect is to reduce the angular and translational simulation motion by comparison with that for the linear washout case. Finally, the conclusions and implications for further research in the area of nonlinear washout filters are presented.

Generation of linear dynamic models from a digital nonlinear simulation

The results and methodology used to derive linear models from a nonlinear simulation are presented. It is shown that averaged positive and negative perturbations in the state variables can reduce numerical errors in finite difference, partial derivative approximations and, in the control inputs, can better approximate the system response in both directions about the operating point. Both explicit and implicit formulations are addressed. Linear models are derived for the F 100 engine, and comparisons of transients are made with the nonlinear simulation. The problem of startup transients in the nonlinear simulation in making these comparisons is addressed. Also, reduction of the linear models is investigated using the modal and normal techniques. Reduced-order models of the F 100 are derived and compared with the full-state models.

Nonlinear interaction of waves in boundary-layer flows

First-order nonlinear interactions of Tollmien-Schlichting waves of different frequencies and initial amplitudes in boundary-layer flows are analyzed by using the method of multiple scales. For the case of two waves, a strong nonlinear interaction exists if one of the frequencies w2 is twice the other frequency w1. Numerical results for flow past a flat plate show that this interaction mechanism is strongly destabilizing even in regions where either the fundamental or its harmonic is damped in the absence of the interaction. For the case of three waves, a strong nonlinear interaction exists when w3 = w2- w1. This combination resonance causes the amplitude of the wave with the difference frequency w3 to multiply many times in magnitude in a short distance even if it is damped in the absence of the interaction. The initial amplitudes play a dominant role in determining the changes in the amplitudes of the waves in both of these mechanisms.
