What is the Role of Nb in Nickel-Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes for Lithium-Ion Batteries?

Nickel-rich layered metal oxide LiNi 1–y–z Mn y Co z O 2 (1 – y – z ≥ 0.8) materials are the most promising cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles. However, they lose more than 10% of their capacity on the first cycle, and interfacial/structural instability causes capacity fading. Coating and substitution are possible direct and effective solutions to solve these challenges. In this Letter, Nb coating and Nb substitution on LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) is easily produced through a scalable wet chemistry method followed by sintering from 400 to 800 °C. A Li-free Nb oxide treatment is found to remove surface impurities forming a LiNbO 3 /Li 3 NbO 4 surface coating, to reduce the first capacity loss and to improve the rate performance. Furthermore, Nb substitution stabilizes the structure, as evidenced by less heat evolution on heating, thus providing better long cycling stability with a 93.2% capacity retention after 250 cycles.

High-Nickel Cathodes with Mechanical and Interfacial Robustness via Tailored Concentration Gradients for Stable Li-Ion Batteries

Here, we have developed a versatile mathematical framework integrated with an automated reactor system to design and reify highly customizable full concentration gradient (FCG) in high-nickel cathodes for advanced Li-ion batteries. This method provides precise and independent control of the average composition, slope, and curvature of FCGs, enabling the optimization of structural and mechanical properties of the cathode materials. We have showcased this method with Ni 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 (OH) 2 precursors of controlled FCGs, which unlocked an optimized cathode with excellent cycling stability without crack formation after repeated cycles. This work opens up new possibilities for the design and manufacturing of advanced cathode materials, enabling safer, high-performance batteries.

Quantitative Analysis and Prediction of Thermal Runaway Metrics of High-Nickel Oxide Cathodes by Machine Learning Models

The pursuit of higher energy density in lithium-ion batteries has made high-nickel (Ni) layered oxides leading cathode candidates for next-generation electric vehicles. However, their poor thermal stability, particularly at Ni contents ≥ 90%, increases the risk of cathode-initiated thermal runaway. Furthermore, we present a data-driven framework combining linear and nonlinear machine learning models to predict key thermal runaway descriptors from a high-throughput differential scanning calorimetry database. With cathode composition and state of charge (SOC) as input features, the ensemble model accurately predicts peak temperature, heat release, and peak heat flow. SHAP analysis identifies Ni content and SOC as the dominant factors controlling thermal runaway temperature, while SOC primarily governs heat release and peak heat flow. Al, Mg, and Mn improve thermal stability by strengthening metal–oxygen bonding and delaying structural transformation, whereas B mainly reduces heat release through surface passivation. Validation with a new cathode composition confirms accurate prediction of SOC-dependent thermal runaway behavior and critical SOC.

Nickel Enhances InPd-Catalyzed Nitrate Reduction Activity and N 2 Selectivity

Palladium–indium (PdIn) is a well-established bimetallic composition for reductively degrading nitrate anions, one of the most ubiquitous contaminants in the groundwater. However, the scarcity and the variable price of these rare-earth and platinum group critical metals may hinder their use for water treatment. Nickel (Ni), a nonprecious metal in the same element group as Pd, could partially replace and lower Pd usage if the resulting trimetallic composition is sufficiently catalytically active. Herein, we report the synthesis and nitrate reduction catalysis of activated carbon-supported “In-on-Pd-on-Ni” catalysts (InPdNi/AC). While bimetallic InPd/AC (0.05 wt % In, 1.3 wt % Pd) was expectedly active, trimetallic InPdNi/AC containing the same In amount, much less Pd (0.1 wt %), and 1 wt % Ni was >17 more active (k cat ≈ 20 vs 349 L min –1 g surface metal –1 ). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that Pd gained electron density from Ni, correlating to the increased nitrate reduction activity. Ammonium byproduct selectivity for InPdNi/AC (18% at 50% nitrate conversion) was lower compared to that of InPd/AC (48%), suggestive of the higher surface coverage of NO or its greater reactivity with NO 2 – , which led to more N 2 . Accounting for the catalyst precursor, manufacturing costs, and spent metal recovery, we calculated that Ni incorporation lowered the net catalyst cost significantly (from $\$$1028/kg to $\$$170/kg). The trimetallic composition lowered, by ∼26 times, the catalyst cost of a stirred tank reactor sized to the same treatment capacity as that for the bimetallic case. In conclusion, the results demonstrate that the partial replacement of the precious metal with an earth-abundant one leads to a higher efficiency and lower cost denitrification catalyst, via a material strategy that should be beneficial for other clean-water catalytic systems.

Understanding the Mechanism of High Capacitance in Nickel Hexaaminobenzene-Based Conductive Metal-Organic Frameworks in Aqueous Electrolytes

Recently, intrinsically conductive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have demonstrated promising performance in fast-charging energy storage applications and may outperform some current electrode materials (e.g., porous carbons) for supercapacitors in terms of both gravimetric and volumetric capacitance. In this report, we examine the mechanism of high capacitance in a nickel hexaaminobenzene-based MOF (NiHAB). Using a combination of in situ Raman and X-Ray absorption spectroscopies, as well as detailed electrochemical studies in a series of aqueous electrolytes, we demonstrate in this work that the charge storage mechanism is in fact a pH-dependent surface pseudocapacitance, and, unlike typical inorganic systems, where transition metals change oxidation state during charge/discharge cycles, NiHAB redox activity is ligand-centered.

Realization of an Ideal Cairo Tessellation in Nickel Diazenide NiN 2 : High-Pressure Route to Pentagonal 2D Materials

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials are based on highly symmetric hexagonal structural motifs. In contrast, lower-symmetry structures may have exciting anisotropic properties leading to various applications in nanoelectronics. In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN 2 which possesses atomic-thick layers comprised of Ni 2 N 3 pentagons forming Cairo-type tessellation. The layers of NiN 2 are weakly bonded with the calculated exfoliation energy of 0.72 J/m 2 , which is just slightly larger than that of graphene. The compound crystallizes in the space group of the ideal Cairo tiling (P4/mbm) and possesses significant anisotropy of elastic properties. The single-layer NiN 2 is a direct-band-gap semiconductor, while the bulk material is metallic. Furthermore, this indicates the promise of NiN 2 to be a precursor of a pentagonal 2D material with a tunable direct band gap.

Multiple Mechanisms Mapped in Aryl Alkyl Ether Cleavage via Aqueous Electrocatalytic Hydrogenation over Skeletal Nickel

We present here detailed mechanistic studies of electrocatalytic hydrogenation (ECH) in aqueous solution over skeletal nickel cathodes to probe the various paths of reductive catalytic C–O bond cleavage among functionalized aryl ethers relevant to energy science. Heterogeneous catalytic hydrogenolysis of aryl ethers is important both in hydrodeoxygenation of fossil fuels and in upgrading of lignin from biomass. The presence or absence of simple functionalities such as carbonyl, hydroxyl, methyl, or methoxyl groups is known to cause dramatic shifts in reactivity and cleavage selectivity between sp3 C–O and sp2 C–O bonds. Specifically, reported hydrogenolysis studies with Ni and other catalysts have hinted at different cleavage mechanisms for the C–O ether bonds in α-keto and α-hydroxy β-O-4 type aryl ether linkages of lignin. Our new rate, selectivity, and isotopic labeling results from ECH reactions confirm that these aryl ethers undergo C–O cleavage via distinct paths. For the simple 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethane or its alcohol congener, 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol, the benzylic site is activated via Ni C–H insertion, followed by beta elimination of the phenoxide leaving group. But in the case of the ketone, 2-phenoxyacetophenone, the polarized carbonyl π system apparently binds directly with the electron rich Ni cathode surface without breaking the aromaticity of the neighboring phenyl ring, leading to rapid cleavage. Substituent steric and electronic perturbations across a broad range of β-O-4 type ethers create a hierarchy of cleavage rates that supports these mechanistic ideas while offering guidance to allow rational design of the catalytic method. Furthermore, on the basis of the new insights, the usage of cosolvent acetone is shown to enable control of product selectivity.

Nickel(II) Metal Complexes as Optically Addressable Qubit Candidates

The inherent atomic level structural control of synthetic chemistry enables the creation of qubits, the base units of a quantum information science system, designed for a target application. For quantum sensing applications, enabling optical read-out of spin in tunable molecular systems, akin to defect-based systems, would be transformative. This approach would bring together molecular tunability with optical read-out technology. In theory, nickel ions in octahedral symmetry meet all the criteria for optical readout of spin. Yet, to the best of our knowledge, there are no pulse EPR studies on Ni 2+ molecules. We identified two compounds featuring highly symmetric Ni 2+ centers, thereby engendering weak zero-field splitting to enable EPR addressability:[Ni(phen) 3 ](BF 4 ) 2 (1) and [Ni(pyr 3 ) 2 ](BF 4 ) 2 (2) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline; pyr 3 = tris-2-pyridyl-methane). Crucially, these complexes feature the requisite strong field ligands to enable emission for optical addressability. We extracted axial zero-field splitting parameters of D = +0.9 cm –1 and +2.7 cm –1 for 1 and 2, respectively, enabling pulse EPR measurements. Both compounds produce emission at λ max = 938–944 nm. Furthermore, the aggregate of these results expands the catalogue of qubit materials to Ni 2+ -based compounds and offers a future pathway for optical readout of these molecules.

Enantioselective C–H Amination Catalyzed by Nickel Iminyl Complexes Supported by Anionic Bisoxazoline (BOX) Ligands

The trityl-substituted bisoxazoline ( TrH BOX) was prepared as a chiral analogue to a previously reported nickel dipyrrin system capable of ring-closing amination catalysis. Ligand metalation with divalent NiI 2 (py) 4 followed by potassium graphite reduction afforded the monovalent (TrH BOX)Ni(py) (4). Slow addition of 1.4 equiv of a benzene solution of 1-adamantylazide to 4 generated the tetrazido ( TrH BOX)Ni(κ 2 -N 4 Ad 2 ) (5) and terminal iminyl adduct ( TrH BOX)Ni(NAd) (6). Investigation of 6 via single-crystal X-ray crystallography, NMR and EPR spectroscopies, and computations revealed a Ni(II)-iminyl radical formulation, similar to its dipyrrinato congener. Complex 4 exhibits enantioselective intramolecular C–H bond amination to afford N-heterocyclic products from 4-aryl-2-methyl-2-azidopentanes. Catalytic C–H amination occurs under mild conditions (5 mol % catalyst, 60 °C) and provides pyrrolidine products in decent yield (29%–87%) with moderate ee (up to 73%). Substrates with a 3,5-dialkyl substitution on the 4-aryl position maximized the observed enantioselectivity. Kinetic studies to probe the reaction mechanism were conducted using 1H and 19F NMR spectroscopies. A small, intermolecular kinetic isotope effect (1.35 ± 0.03) suggests an H-atom abstraction step with an asymmetric transition state while the reaction rate is measured to be first order in catalyst and zeroth order in substrate concentrations. Enantiospecific deuterium labeling studies show that the enantioselectivity is dictated by both the H-atom abstraction and radical recombination steps due to the comparable rate between radical rotation and C–N bond formation. Furthermore, the competing elements of the two-step reaction where H-removal from the pro-R configuration is preferred while the preferential radical capture occurs with the Si face of the carboradical likely lead to the diminished ee observed, as corroborated by theoretical calculations. Furthermore, based on these enantio-determining steps, catalytic enantioselective synthesis of 2,5-bis-tertiary pyrrolidines is demonstrated with good yield (50–78%) and moderate ee (up to 79%).

Formation of Surface Impurities on Lithium–Nickel–Manganese–Cobalt Oxides in the Presence of CO 2 and H 2 O

Surface impurities involving parasitic reactions and gas evolution contribute to the degradation of high Ni content LiNi x Mn y Co z O 2 (NMC) cathode materials. The transient kinetic technique of Temporal Analysis of Products (TAP), density functional theory, and infrared spectroscopy have been used to study the formation of surface impurities on varying nickel content NMC materials (NMC811, NMC622, NMC532, NMC433, NMC111) in the presence of CO 2 and H 2 O. CO 2 reactivity on a clean surface as characterized by CO 2 conversion rate in the TAP reactor follows the order: NMC811 > NMC622 > NMC532 > NMC433 > NMC111. The capacity of CO 2 uptake follows a different order: NMC532 > NMC433 > NMC622 > NMC811 > NMC111. Moisture pretreatment slows down the direct CO 2 adsorption process and creates additional active sites for CO 2 adsorption. Electronic structure calculations predict that the (012) surface is more reactive than the ($10\bar{1}4$) surface for CO 2 and H 2 O adsorption. CO 2 adsorption leading to carbonate formation is exothermic with formation of ion pairs. The average CO 2 binding energies on the different materials follow the CO 2 reactivity order. Water hydroxylates the (012) surface and surface OH groups favor bicarbonate formation. Water creates more active sites for CO 2 adsorption on the ($10\bar{1}4$) surface due to hydrogen bonding. The composition of surface impurities formed in ambient air exposure is dependent on water concentration and the percentage of different crystal planes. Different surface reactivities suggest that battery performance degradation due to surface impurities can be mitigated by precise control of the dominant surfaces in NMC materials.

New Compounds and Phase Selection of Nickel Sulfides via Oxidation State Control in Molten Hydroxides

Molten salts are promising reaction media candidates for the discovery of novel materials; however, they offer little control over oxidation state compared to aqueous solutions. Here, we demonstrated that when two hydroxides are mixed, their melts become fluxes with tunable solubility, which are surprisingly powerful solvents for ternary chalcogenides and offer effective paths for crystal growth to new compounds. We report that precise control of the oxidation state of Ni is achievable in mixed molten LiOH/KOH to grow single crystals of all known ternary K-Ni-S compounds. It is also possible to access several new phases, including a new polytope of β-K 2 Ni 3 S 4 , as well as low-valence KNi 4 S 2 and K 4 Ni 9 S 11 . KNi 4 S 2 is a two-dimensional low-valence nickel-rich sulfide, and β-K 2 Ni 3 S 4 has a hexagonal lattice. Moreover, using KNi 4 S 2 as a template, we obtained a new layered binary Ni 2 S by topotactic deintercalation of K. The new binary Ni 2 S has a van der Waals gap and can function as a new host layer for intercalation chemistry, as demonstrated by the intercalation of LiOH between its layers. The oxidation states of low-valence KNi 4 S 2 and Ni 2 S were studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Density functional theory calculations showed large antibonding interactions at the Fermi level for both KNi 4 S 2 and Ni 2 S 2 corresponding to the flat-bands with large Ni-d$_{x^2}$$_{y^2}$ character.

Revealing the Dynamics and Roles of Iron Incorporation in Nickel Hydroxide Water Oxidation Catalysts

We report the surface of an electrocatalyst undergoes dynamic chemical and structural transformations under electro-chemical operating conditions. There is a dynamic exchange of metal cations between the electrocatalyst and electrolyte. Understanding how iron in the electrolyte gets incorporated in the nickel hydroxide electrocatalyst is critical for pinpointing the roles of Fe during water oxidation. Here, we report that iron incorporation and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are highly coupled, especially at high working potentials. The iron incorporation rate is much higher at OER potentials than that at the OER dormant state (low potentials). At OER potentials, iron incorporation favors electrochemically more reactive edge sites, as visualized by synchrotron X-ray fluorescence microscopy. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations, we show that Fe incorporation can suppress the oxidation of Ni and enhance the Ni reducibility, leading to improved OER catalytic activity. Our findings provide a holistic approach to understanding and tailoring Fe incorporation dynamics across the electrocatalyst-electrolyte interface, thus controlling catalytic processes.

Polymorphism in the Ruddlesden–Popper Nickelate La 3 Ni 2 O 7 : Discovery of a Hidden Phase with Distinctive Layer Stacking

We report the discovery of a novel form of Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) nickelate that stands as the first example of long-range, coherent polymorphism in this class of inorganic solids. Rather than the well-known, uniform stacking of perovskite blocks ubiquitously found in RP phases, this newly discovered polymorph of the bilayer RP phase La 3 Ni 2 O 7 adopts a novel stacking sequence in which single-layer and trilayer blocks of NiO 6 octahedra alternate in a “1313” sequence. Crystals of this new polymorph are described in space group Cmmm, although we note evidence for a competing Imam variant. Transport measurements at ambient pressure reveal metallic character with evidence of a charge density wave transition with an onset at T ≈ 134 K. In conclusion, the discovery of such polymorphism could reverberate to the expansive range of science and applications that rely on RP materials, particularly the recently reported signatures of superconductivity in bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 with T c as high as 80 K above 14 GPa.

Surface Hydration of Porous Nickel Hydroxides Facilitates the Reversible Adsorption of CO 2 from Ambient Air

Direct air capture (DAC) under humid ambient conditions typically requires the use of organic components, with sorbents that are purely inorganic in composition for the most part operating hundreds of degrees above room temperature. In this work, we report porous metal hydroxides as a novel class of water-tolerant, oxidatively and hydrothermally stable low-temperature sorbents that exhibit competitive DAC working capacities of 1.25 mmol/g over 5 consecutive temperature swing adsorption–desorption cycles in the presence of steam and oxygen. Aqueous miscible organic solvent treatments are used to create highly porous structures with surface areas exceeding 700 m 2 /g that capture CO 2 in the form of bicarbonates under dry conditions, and carbonates under wet conditions. Water exerts a facilitative rather than an inhibiting effect on CO 2 binding, and the presence of hydrating multilayers serves to stabilize carbonate species akin to moisture swing adsorbents except for the fact that solvation results in a remarkable (upto 10-fold) increase, not decrease, in DAC capacity. High-valent doping with cerium is used to improve DAC capacities by amplifying surface basicity, evidencing porous nickel hydroxides specifically (and porous metal hydroxides more generally) as a novel class of robust, earth-abundant DAC sorbents.

Single-Atom Nickel Dispersed on Mo 2 TiC 2 T x MXene for Upcycling of Polyolefins via Catalytic Hydropyrolysis for Fuels and Lubricants

Plastic waste has been a major social and environmental problem. Chemical upcycling of plastic waste into transportation fuels or lubricant oil has emerged as an attractive and promising approach to convert plastic waste into valuable products. However, conventional catalyst systems often require high-pressure hydrogen, prolonged residence time, and the use of noble metal catalysts. Here, we present zero-valent nickel single atoms on Mo-based MXenes (Ni/Mo 2 TiC 2 T x ) for effective hydrogenation of polyolefins. In situ spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations demonstrate the formation of Ni–Mo and Ni–C bonds at a low Ni loading, resulting in the formation of dispersed intercalated Ni atoms. The catalysts were then employed to convert polyethylene into fuels and lubricant molecules under atmospheric hydrogen pressure, short vapor residence time (τ < 1 s), and mild reaction temperature (300 °C). We further demonstrated the possibility of tuning the Ni structure by changing the Ni loading, attributed to the strong metal–support interactions (MSIs) with the Mo 2 TiC 2 T x support. Under optimized conditions, 22.5 C% gasoline, 12.0 C% diesel, 19.2 C% jet fuel (JP-8), and 37.4 C% lubricant were produced over 0.5% Ni/Mo 2 TiC 2 T x . This work highlights the potential of utilizing MSIs of Mo 2 TiC 2 T x MXenes to synthesize single-atom catalysts (SACs) for upcycling plastic waste into higher-value products.

Mutual modulation between surface chemistry and bulk microstructure within secondary particles of nickel-rich layered oxides

Abstract Surface lattice reconstruction is commonly observed in nickel-rich layered oxide battery cathode materials, causing unsatisfactory high-voltage cycling performance. However, the interplay of the surface chemistry and the bulk microstructure remains largely unexplored due to the intrinsic structural complexity and the lack of integrated diagnostic tools for a thorough investigation at complementary length scales. Herein, by combining nano-resolution X-ray probes in both soft and hard X-ray regimes, we demonstrate correlative surface chemical mapping and bulk microstructure imaging over a single charged LiNi 0.8 Mn 0.1 Co 0.1 O 2 (NMC811) secondary particle. We reveal that the sub-particle regions with more micro cracks are associated with more severe surface degradation. A mechanism of mutual modulation between the surface chemistry and the bulk microstructure is formulated based on our experimental observations and finite element modeling. Such a surface-to-bulk reaction coupling effect is fundamentally important for the design of the next generation battery cathode materials.

Coordination environment tuning of nickel sites by oxyanions to optimize methanol electro-oxidation activity

To achieve zero-carbon economy, advanced anode catalysts are desirable for hydrogen production and biomass upgrading powered by renewable energy. Ni-based non-precious electrocatalysts are considered as potential candidates because of intrinsic redox attributes, but in-depth understanding and rational design of Ni site coordination still remain challenging. Here, we perform anodic electrochemical oxidation of Ni-metalloids (NiP x , NiS x , and NiSe x ) to in-situ construct different oxyanion-coordinated amorphous nickel oxyhydroxides (NiOOH-TO x ), among which NiOOH-PO x shows optimal local coordination environment and boosts electrocatalytic activity of Ni sites towards selective oxidation of methanol to formate. Experiments and theoretical results demonstrate that NiOOH-PO x possesses improved adsorption of OH* and methanol, and favors the formation of CH 3 O* intermediates. The coordinated phosphate oxyanions effectively tailor the d band center of Ni sites and increases Ni-O covalency, promoting the catalytic activity. This study provides additional insights into modulation of active-center coordination environment via oxyanions for organic molecules transformation.

Reliable bi-functional nickel-phosphate /TiO2 integration enables stable n-GaAs photoanode for water oxidation under alkaline condition

Abstract Hydrogen is one of the most widely used essential chemicals worldwide, and it is also employed in the production of many other chemicals, especially carbon-free energy fuels produced via photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. At present, gallium arsenide represents the most efficient photoanode material for PEC water oxidation, but it is known to either be anodically photocorroded or photopassivated by native metal oxides in the competitive reaction, limiting efficiency and stability. Here, we report chemically etched GaAs that is decorated with thin titanium dioxide (~30 nm-thick, crystalline) surface passivation layer along with nickel-phosphate (Ni-Pi) cocatalyst as a surface hole-sink layer. The integration of Ni-Pi bifunctional co-catalyst results in a highly efficient GaAs electrode with a ~ 100 mV cathodic shift of the onset potential. In this work, the electrode also has enhanced photostability under 110 h testing for PEC water oxidation at a steady current density J ph > 25 mA·cm −2 . The Et-GaAs/TiO 2 /Ni-Pi║Ni-Pi tandem configuration results in the best unassisted bias-free water splitting device with the highest J ph (~7.6 mA·cm −2 ) and a stable solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency of 9.5%.
