Charge exchange in zinc-neon

Excitation of the 4d and 5p levels of Zn+ by charge exchange bewteen Ne+ and Zn was investigated. From measured electron temperature and line intensity ratios it was concluded that charge exchange is the dominate mechanism for populating the 4d2D5/2 level of Zn+. Comparison of Zn-Ne and Zn-Ar results imply the same conclusion. No evidence for charge exchange as the dominant pumping mechanism for the 5p2Pl/2, 5p2P3/2, or 4d2D3/2 levels was obtained.

Variability of the Al-26 production rate in ordinary chondrites

Fifteen ordinary chondrites for which unusually high spallogenic Ne-22/Ne-21 or He-3/Ne-21 ratios had been reported and one meteorite with marked shock characteristics were selected in order to investigate the relations between Ne-22/Ne-21 ratios, Al-26 contents and depth. We report Al-26 and K contents of 13 samples from 11 of these and noble gas contents of 30 samples from all of these stones.

The solar wind as deduced from lunar samples

Lunar surface samples, which have been exposed to the solar wind, can be used to obtain information on the recent and past solar wind. Some of the more important conclusions reached are: The D/H ratio in the solar wind is smaller than 0.000003. The isotopic composition of C, Ar (except Ar-40), and Kr in the solar wind and on the earth are the same within approximately plus or minus 3%. Terrestrial Ne is enriched in the heavier isotopes relative to solar wind Ne. The average solar wind flux in the past was probably higher than at present. The average solar wind energy has varied in the past; however, no long time trend is apparent. Evidence for a secular decrease of the He-4/He-3 ratio with time exists.

76535 - An old lunar rock

Measurements of Rb-Sr systematics, K-Ar gas retention ages, and the isotopic compositions of He, Ne, and Ar have been performed for lunar troctolite 76535. Other investigators have presented evidence that this important rock formed as a cumulate at depth, which would make it an important link in the early chronology of the moon. Rb-Sr data do not define an isochron. Total Ar-40/K ages of whole rock and plagioclase range from 4.40-4.54 b.y. The trapped Ne and Ar in 76535 cannot be uniquely characterized as either 'planetary derived' or solar wind derived, but appear to have characteristics of both. The data suggest that 76535 formed 4.3-4.6 b.y. ago, and the accumulation process and/or subsequent annealing may have incorporated excess noble gases. Separation of radiogenic parents and daughters with incomplete isotopic equilibration may also have occurred during cooling or during a subsequent 'event'.

Physiological and biochemical characteristics of adrenergic receptors and pathways in brown adipocytes

Mechanisms involved in the thermogenic response of brown adipose tissue (BAT) to sympathetic nervous stimulation (e.g., by cold exposure) and to norepinephrine (NE) release are investigated. Three effects appear to play a role in the increased oxygen consumption (and heat production) of the adipocytes: increased membrane permeability, activation of the beta-adrenergic pathway, and enhancement of Na(+)/K(+) membrane pump activity. Increased passive influx of Na(+) and efflux of K(+) due to greater permeability raise the energy demands of the Na/K pump; the pump is also stimulated by increased cyclic AMP synthesis resulting from activation by NE of membrane-bound adenyl cyclase. Studies with inhibitors such as propanolol, phentolamine, and ouabain support this hypothesis.

Near threshold response of a wave shifted Cerenkov radiator to heavy ions

The response of Pilot 425 to heavy ions with energies less than 600 MeV/amu beta approximately 0.8 is examined both theoretically and experimentally. Measurements are presented from an experiment which employed a Ne-20 beam at many energies below 575 MeV/amu. The signal is assumed to come from three sources: (1) Cerenkov light from the heavy ion, (2) Cerenkov light from secondary electrons, and (3) scintillation of the radiator. It is found that the effective index of refraction is 1.518 and that scintillation is present at a level of approximately 2.7 percent of the Cerenkov signal for beta = 1 for Ne-20. The first of these values differs from values previously quoted in the literature.

Cosmogenic radionuclides in stone meteorites

This document presents the techniques and compilation of results of cosmogenic Al-26 measurements at Goddard Space Flight Center on 91 samples of 76 stone meteorites. Short-lived radionuclides, including Na-22, Sc-46, Mn-54, and Co-60, were measured in 13 of these meteorites. About one-third of these data has not previously been published. The results are discussed briefly in terms of (1) depletion of Al-26 and natural potassium due to weathering, (2) possible exposure of several chondrites to an unusually high cosmic-ray flux, (3) comparison of Al-26, Na-22, Sc-46, and Mn5-54 in chondrites with the spallation Ne-22/Ne-21 ratio as a shielding indicator, and (4) comparison of (Al-26)-(Ne-22)/Ne-21 data for achondrite classes with the chondrite trend.

Early irradiation of matter in the solar system - Magnesium /proton, neutron/ scheme

The occurrence of positive and negative Mg-26 anomalies in inclusions of the Allende meteorite is explained in terms of proton bombardment of a gas of solar composition. A significant fraction of Mg-26 in the irradiated gas is stored temporarily in the form of radioactive Al-26 by the reaction Mg-26(p, n)Al-26. Proton fluxes of 10 to the 17th power to 10 to the 19th power protons per square centimeter per year at 1 million electron volts are inferred. Aluminum-rich materials condensing from the gas phase have positive Mg-26 anomalies, whereas magnesium-rich materials have negative Mg-26 anomalies. The proton flux required to account for the observed magnesium anomalies is used to investigate possible isotopic anomalies in the elements from oxygen to argon. Detectable isotopic anomalies are predicted only for neon. The anomalous neon is virtually pure Ne-22 from Na-22 decay. The predicted amount of anomalous Ne-22 is about 10 to the -8th power cubic centimeter (at standard temperature and pressure) per milligram of sodium.

Charge exchange in zinc-neon

Excitation of the 4d and 5p levels of Zn(+) by charge exchange between Ne(+) and Zn was investigated. From measured electron temperature and line intensity ratios it was concluded that charge exchange is the dominant mechanism for populating the 4d 2D5/2 level of Zn(+). Comparison of Zn-Ne and Zn-Ar results imply the same conclusion. No evidence for charge exchange as the dominant pumping mechanism for the 5p 2P1/2, 5p 2P3/2, or 4d 2D3/2 levels was obtained.

Low energy particle composition

A review is given of current knowledge of low-energy cosmic ray particles produced in the solar system. It is argued that the notion that the sun alone can accelerate particles in the solar system must be abandoned in light of evidence that Jupiter and earth may be sources of observed low-energy particles. Measurements of the composition and energy spectra of low-energy particles during quiet times are examined, emphasizing the abundance of protons and helium and of anomalous N, O, and Ne. The abundance of heavy particles (B, C, N, O, Ne, Ca and Fe) of unknown origin in the earth magnetosphere is examined. Reported observations of Jovian electrons are discussed and solar particle events with anomalous compositions (He-3 rich events and Fe rich events) are treated in detail. Nuclear abundances of solar particles, emphasizing their temporal and spatial variations are considered together with the nature of nuclear reaction products in solar flares.

Cosmic ray measurements of light and medium nuclei using a new telescope

Three separate balloon flights provided with a new multielement cosmic ray telescope are used to collect data on the isotopic composition of cosmic rays of Z equals 3 to 10 in the energy range 150-450 MeV/nuc. The discussion covers Li, Be, B, C, N, and O. The data on Ne is a new finding that suggests a possible enhancement of Ne-22 in cosmic rays relative to the normally accepted universal abundances. Other data are presented which directly verify the expected geomagnetic cutoff effects on isotopes characterized by different charge-to-mass ratio.

Reflex limb dilatation following norepinephrine and angiotensin II in conscious dogs

The extent to which norepinephrine (NE) and angiotensin II (AN) constrict the mesenteric, renal, and iliac beds in conscious dogs is evaluated with a view to elicit opposing reflex actions tempering the vasoconstriction in the limb of the animals tested. The afferent and efferent mechanisms mediating this reflex are analyzed. It is shown that intravenous NE and AN cause striking reflex iliac dilatation in the limb of the conscious dog. The afferent arc of this reflex involves both arterial baroreceptor and vagal path-ways, whereas the efferent mechanism involves an interaction of alpha-adrenergic and histaminergic receptors.

Noble gases and shock effects in the Odessa octahedrite

Noble gas contents and shock effects have been studied in 21 Odessa irons from known geographic locations. Cosmogenic He-3, Ne-21, Ar-38 contents and He-3/Ne-21 ratios vary by factors of 62, 91, 68, and 1.55, respectively, while Ne-22/Ne-21 ratios are virtually constant at 1.07. The samples fall into two groups differing by a factor of 4.1 in exposure age, 1000 in source mass, or some combination of these. Three samples show significant shock effects, two of them to above 130 kbar, probably arising during terrestrial impact from the crater-forming explosion. As in Canyon Diablo plains specimens, noble gas contents do not correlate with siting or shock.

Dimensional stability of fused silica, Invar, and several ultralow thermal expansion materials

A method is developed for testing the long-term dimensional stability of an iodine-stabilized He-Ne laser, using a technique whereby thermal expansion coefficients are measured by forming a Fabry-Perot etalon from the sample and monitoring the optical resonant frequencies with tunable sidebands impressed on a laser beam from a frequency-stabilized He-Ne laser. A change of 1 ppm over a 3-yr period on the part of fused silica dimensions and the differential thermal expansion of Invar LR-35 and Super Invar materials are noted. The method is of interest for the metrology of extremely stable structures such as telescopes and optical resonators.

Al-26 in Kenna and other ureilites

A description is presented of the results of a nondestructive analysis conducted with a 42-g slice of the Kenna ureilite. The sample was analyzed in a gamma-gamma coincidence counting system, using a dual-parameter, 4096-channel pulse height analyzer. Data concerning Al-26 and Ne-22/Ne-21 in ureilites and Chassigny are presented in a table. A graph shows the ratio of measured Al-26 activity to that calculated from elemental production rates vs spallation Ne-22/Ne-21 for ureilites and Chassigny. The significance of the data with respect to findings reported by Wilkening et al. (1973) is discussed.

Diogenite exposure ages

He, Ne and Ar isotopes have been measured in six, and Al-26 in two diogenites. Cosmic-ray exposure ages corrected for shielding effects using Ne-22/Ne-21 ratios are generally concordant. Five diogenites have a group age of 14 Myr and three others may have a group age of 24 Myr, implying that two collisions may have produced 8 of the 9 diogenites.

Measurement techniques for analysis of fission fragment excited gases

Spectroscopic analysis of fission fragment excited He, Ar, Xe, N2, Ne, Ar-N2, and Ne-N2 have been conducted. Boltzmann plot analysis of He, Ar and Xe have indicated a nonequilibrium, recombining plasma, and population inversions have been found in these gases. The observed radiating species in helium have been adequately described by a simple kinetic model. A more extensive model for argon, nitrogen and Ar-N2 mixtures was developed which adequately describes the energy flow in the system and compares favorably with experimental measurements. The kinetic processes involved in these systems are discussed.

Recent nuclear pumped laser results

Recent direct nuclear pumped laser research has concentrated on experiments with three gas mixtures (Ne-N2, He-Ne-O2, and He-Hg). One mixture has been made to lase and gain has been achieved with the other two. All three of these mixtures are discussed with particular attention paid to He-Hg. Of interest is the 6150-angstroms ion transition in Hg(+). The upper state of this transition is formed directly by charge transfer and by Penning ionization.
