Alloying vanadium in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 for robust ferromagnetic coupling and quantum anomalous Hall effect

The intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) interlayer coupling in the two-dimensional magnetic topological insulator MnBi 2 Te 4 places a restriction on realizing a stable quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) [Y. Deng et al., Science 367, 895 (2020)]. Through density functional theory calculations, we demonstrate the possibility of tuning the AFM coupling to the ferromagnetic coupling in Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films by alloying about 50% V with Mn. As a result, the QAHE can be achieved without alternation with the even or odd septuple layers. This provides a practical strategy to get a robust QAHE in ultrathin Mn Bi 2 Te 4 films, rendering them attractive for technological innovations.

Three-dimensional ferromagnetism and magnetotransport in van der Waals Mn-intercalated tantalum disufide

Van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnets are an important class of materials for spintronics applications. The recent discovery of atomically vdW magnets CrI 3 and Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 has triggered a renaissance in the area of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Herein we systematically studied 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 single crystal, a 2D vdW ferromagnet with T c ~ 82.3K, and a large in-plane magnetic anisotropy. Mn K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy was measured to provide information on its electronic state and local atomic environment. The detailed magnetic isotherms measured in the vicinity of T c indicates that the spin coupling inside 2H-Mn 0.28 TaS 2 is of a 3D Heisenberg type coupled with the attractive long-range interaction between spins that decay as J(r) ≈ r –4.85 . Both resistivity ρ(T) and thermopower S(T) exhibit anomalies near T c , confirming that the hole-type transport carriers strongly interact with local moments. Furthermore, an unusual angle-dependent magnetoresistance is further observed, suggesting a possible field-induced novel magnetic structure.

Magnetic phase transition, magnetoresistance, and anomalous Hall effect in Ga-substituted Y Mn 6 Sn 6 with a ferromagnetic kagome lattice

The HfFe 6 Ge 6- type RMn 6 Sn 6 , a metallic system consisting of ferromagnetic kagome planes of Mn, has been recently shown to be a candidate hosting topological electronic properties. In this paper, we report magnetic and electronic properties in Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x single crystals via magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport, and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. We show that the magnetic ground state of Y Mn 6 Sn 6-x Ga x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.61 ) evolves from incommensurate antiferromagnet to ferromagnet with increasing Ga substitution x, a feature which is accompanied by the decrease in magnetoresistance. Furthermore, the topological Hall effect observed in the pristine compound is absent in the Ga-substituted ones; instead, the anomalous Hall effect persists which may be associated with the Berry curvature of gapped Dirac bands near the Fermi energy. These results suggest strong correlation between electronic properties and magnetism in this topological magnet that can be readily tuned via Ga substitution.

Neutron scattering study of the kagome metal Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5

Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 is a rare example of a correlated metal in which the Mn moments form a kagome lattice. The absence of magnetic ordering to the lowest temperatures suggests that geometrical frustration of magnetic interactions may lead to strong magnetic fluctuations. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on Sc 3 Mn 3 Al 7 Si 5 , finding that phonon scattering dominates for energies from ~20–50 meV. These results are in good agreement with ab initio calculations of the phonon dispersions and densities of states, and as well reproduce the measured specific heat. A weak magnetic signal was detected at energies less than ~10 meV, present only at the lowest temperatures. The magnetic signal is broad and quasielastic, as expected for metallic paramagnets.

Spin-phonon interaction and short-range order in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The vibrational properties of ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals are investigated using Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Eighteen Raman-active modes are identified, 14 of which are assigned according to the trigonal symmetry. Four additional peaks, obeying the A 1g selection rules, are attributed to the overtones. The unconventional temperature evolution of the A$^{5}_{1g}$ mode self-energy suggests a competition between different short-range magnetic correlations that significantly impact the spin-phonon interaction in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 . This research provides comprehensive insight into the lattice properties, studies their temperature dependence, and shows arguments for the existence of competing short-range magnetic phases in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 .

Multiple incommensurate magnetic states in the kagome antiferromagnet Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8

The kagome lattice can host exotic magnetic phases arising from frustrated and competing magnetic interactions. However, relatively few insulating kagome materials exhibit incommensurate magnetic ordering. Here, we present a study of the magnetic structures and interactions of antiferromagnetic Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 with an undistorted Mn 2+ kagome network. Using neutron-diffraction and bulk magnetic measurements, we show that Na 2 Mn 3 Cl 8 hosts two different incommensurate magnetic states, which develop at T N1 = 1.6 K and T N2 = 0.6 K. Magnetic Rietveld refinements indicate magnetic propagation vectors of the form q=(q x , q y , $\frac{3}{2}$), and our neutron-diffraction data can be well described by cycloidal magnetic structures. By optimizing exchange parameters against magnetic diffuse-scattering data, we show that the spin Hamiltonian contains ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor and antiferromagnetic third-neighbor Heisenberg interactions, with a significant contribution from long-ranged dipolar coupling. This experimentally determined interaction model is compared with density-functional-theory simulations. Using classical Monte Carlo simulations, we show that these competing interactions explain the experimental observation of multiple incommensurate magnetic phases and may stabilize multi-q states. Here, our results expand the known range of magnetic behavior on the kagome lattice.

β -delayed neutron emission of Mn 64 , Cr 62 , and Fe 65

The β-decay properties of nuclei near the second nuclear “island of inversion” around neutron rich nuclei with neutron number 40 are important tests of nuclear structure models and interactions. In particular, the β-delayed neutron emission branch (Ρ n ), is useful for investigating β-strength and neutron-γ competition above the neutron separation energies of the daughter nuclei. We report new constraints for Ρ n values for three nuclei in the region: 62 Cr (Ρ n <1%), 64 Mn (Ρ n = 1.5⁢(6)%), and 65 Fe (Ρ n < 1%), measured with the Neutron Emission Ratio Observer (NERO) neutron long counter system and the Beta Counting Station (BCS) at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). Our results resolve the large discrepancy between previous direct and indirect measurements for 64 Mn and confirm the predictions of global theoretical models when a statistical treatment of the γ and neutron decays of the daughter states is included. Here we also obtain improved half-lives for 62 Cr [206(5) ms] and the short-lived isomer in the 62 Fe daughter [112(7) ms] from β-delayed γ emission data obtained in the same experiment with the Summing NaI (SuN) total absorption spectrometer. Finally, we use γ emission data to obtain a new upper limit for the 62 Cr β-decay population of the long-lived isomeric state in 62 Mn.

Tunable magnetic order in low-symmetry SeO 3 ligand linked TM 3 (SeO 3 ) 3 H 2 O ( TM =Mn , Co, and Ni) compounds

The ability to design crystal lattices with specific sublattice geometries has long been sought after especially in the context of harnessing magnetic frustration to elicit emergent physics. One approach which has seen some success recently is to design magnetic sublattices chemically through the use of nonmagnetic linker ligands as scaffolding for the magnetic ions. In this work we report the magnetic properties of one such family of materials, the transition metal (TM) selenite hydrates with chemical formula TM 3 (SeO 3 ) 3 H 2 O. These materials link highly distorted TMO 6 octahedra via nonmagnetic [SeO 3 ] 2+ linkers. Studying members with TM = Mn, Co, and Ni we use magnetic susceptibility and neutron powder diffraction to identify antiferromagnetic order in all three compounds with moderate frustration indexes. A comparison of the magnetic structures suggests that while the overall structure of the SeO 3 scaffolding remains unchanged the TM effects changes in the magnetic properties through tuning the internal bonding parameters and the single-ion physics. Changing from Mn to Co is found to be particularly consequential manifesting changes in both the ordered-moment direction and in the direction of the ordering vector. Field-dependent measurements of the susceptibility and heat capacity reveal metamagnetic transitions in both Mn 3 (SeO 3 ) 3 H 2 O and Co 3 (SeO 3 ) 3 H 2 O indicating nearby magnetic ground states accessible under relatively small applied fields. Density functional theory calculations broadly confirm these results, showing both a sensitivity of the magnetic structure to the TM and its local environment. Although no spin liquid behavior is achieved, these results suggest the fruitfulness of such synthesis philosophies and encourage future work to engender higher frustration in these materials via doping, field, pressure, or larger linker ligands.

Highly sensitive spin-flop transition in antiferromagnetic van der Waals material M PS 3 ( M = Ni and Mn)

Recent developments in two-dimensional (2D) magnetism have motivated the search for van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials to explore magnetic phenomena in the 2D limit. Metal thiophosphates, MPX 3 , are a class of magnetic vdW materials with antiferromagnetic ordering persisting down to the atomically thin limit. The magnetism in this material family has been found to be highly dependent on the choice of transition metal M. In this paper, we have synthesized the intermediate compounds Ni 1–x Mn x PS 3 (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) and investigated their magnetic properties. Our study reveals that the variation of Ni and Mn content in Ni 1–x Mn x PS 3 can efficiently tune the spin-flop transition, likely due to the modulation of the magnetic anisotropy. Such effective tuning offers a promising candidate to engineer 2D magnetism for future device applications.

Helical versus collinear antiferromagnetic order tuned by magnetic anisotropy in polar and chiral (Ni,Mn) 3 TeO 6

In this work, polar and chiral Ni 3 TeO 6 was found to exhibit a colossal magnetoelectric (ME) effect associated with collinear antiferromagnetic order. We have investigated the evolution of its magnetic state with the substitution of the Ni 2+ spins by isotropic Mn 2+ spins, namely (Ni, Mn) 3 TeO 6 (NMTO). The ground state of NMTO maintains an Ising nature, but a new phase with XY-type magnetic anisotropy is discovered at an intermediate temperature range. Neutron powder diffraction experiments reveal that (1) Mn ions tend to occupy a specific transition-metal site, consistent with the first-principle calculation, and (2) the intermediate phase is an incommensurate (IC) helical magnetic state propagating along the $\textit{c}$ axis with $\vec q_{\text{IC}}$ = (0, 0, 1.5 ± δ). We also found that the balance between these two magnetic states can be readily manipulated with magnetic fields, which results in significant ME effects. This selective site occupancy of NMTO allows for a unique competition between collinear and helical magnetic structures with minimal chemical disorder. Thus, NMTO serves as a model system to study site-specific chemical control of noncollinear magnetism and ME coupling.

Impurity induced confinement effects in size-separated Mn-doped CsPbCl 3 nanocrystals

Beyond quantum confinement, impurity doping of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) offers a degree of control over their optical and electronic properties, which are of interest for potential applications. Manganese (Mn)-doped CsPbCl 3 NCs, for example, show synergistic effects in the visible, with large enhancements in both blue (exciton) and red (dopant) emission over a narrow range of dopant concentration. Although Mn concentration is the primary parameter, NC size offers an additional degree of control over the number of dopants per NC. Size-resolved CsPbCl 3 NCs prepared in the limit of strong Mn doping highlight the emergence of defective NCs with deviations from anticipated confinement trends. In conclusion, the transition correlates with a redshift and increase in the amplitude of dopant emission, and we discuss these observations in the context of atomistic simulations of Ruddlesden-Popper defects in CsPbCl 3 .

Slow ferromagnetic fluctuations in the kagome metal Sc 3 ⁢ Mn 3 ⁢Al 7 ⁢ Si 5 revealed by 27 Al NMR

Static and dynamical magnetic and electronic properties of the kagome metal Sc 3 ⁢Mn 3 ⁢ Al 7⁢ Si 5 have been investigated by 27 Al nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. Two distinct 27 Al -NMR signals with two different values of quadrupolar frequencies of 𝜈 Q = 1.55(2) and 1.07(2) MHz are observed, which are assigned to Al(1) and Al(2), respectively. From the detailed NMR spectrum measurements under three different magnetic field directions and the density functional theory calculations, the principal axes of the electric field gradient for each Al site have been determined. The temperature dependence of Knight shift (𝐾) shows a similar temperature dependence of the DC magnetic susceptibility 𝜒 except for the low-temperature region below ∼50 K where 𝐾 is almost constant while 𝜒 keeps increasing, which suggests that the increase in 𝜒 at low temperatures is not intrinsic. 27 Al spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature (1/𝑇 1 ⁢𝑇) is found to be constant, confirming the metallic state of Sc 3 ⁢Mn 3 ⁢ Al 7⁢ Si 5 from a microscopic point of view. Based on a Korringa ratio analysis using the 𝑇 1 and 𝐾 data, ferromagnetic fluctuations are found to dominate in Sc 3 ⁢Mn 3 ⁢ Al 7⁢ Si 5 . In conclusion, these fluctuations are suggested to be very slow with frequencies on the order of kilohertz or lower.

Cluster spin glass correlations and dynamics in Zn 0.5⁢ Mn 0.5⁢ Te

Here, we present a combined magnetometry, muon spin-relaxation (𝜇⁢SR), and neutron-scattering study of the insulating spin glass Zn 0.5 ⁢Mn 0.5 ⁢Te, for which magnetic Mn 2+ and nonmagnetic Zn 2+ ions are randomly distributed on a face-centered cubic lattice. The magnetometry and 𝜇⁢SR results confirm a spin freezing transition around 𝑇 𝑓 ≈ 23 K, with the spin-fluctuation rate decreasing gradually and somewhat inhomogeneously through the sample volume as the temperature decreases toward 𝑇 𝑓 . Characteristic spin-correlation times well above 𝑇 𝑓 are on the order of 10 −10 s, much slower than typically observed in canonical spin glasses but in line with expectations for a cluster spin glass. Using magnetic pair distribution function (mPDF) analysis and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modeling of the magnetic diffuse neutron-scattering data, we show that the spin-glass ground state consists of clusters of spins exhibiting short-range-ordered type-III antiferromagnetic correlations with a locally ordered moment of 3.1⁢(1)⁢𝜇 B between nearest-neighbor spins. The type-III correlations decay exponentially as a function of spin separation distance with a correlation length of approximately 5 Å. The diffuse magnetic scattering and corresponding mPDF show no significant changes across 𝑇 𝑓 , indicating that the dynamically fluctuating short-range spin correlations in the paramagnetic state retain the same basic type-III configuration that characterizes the spin-glass state; the only change apparent from the neutron-scattering data is a gradual reduction of the correlation length and locally ordered moment with increasing temperature. Taken together, these results paint a unique and detailed picture of the local magnetic structure and dynamics in Zn 0.5 ⁢Mn 0.5⁢ Te and provide strong evidence that this material is best described as a cluster spin glass. In addition, this work showcases a statistical method for extracting diffuse scattering signals from neutron powder diffraction data, which we developed to facilitate the mPDF and RMC analysis of the neutron data. This method has the potential to be broadly useful for neutron powder diffraction experiments on a variety of materials with short-range atomic or magnetic order.

Doping topological Dirac semimetal with magnetic impurities: Electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3 ⁢As 2

The prospect of transforming a Dirac topological semimetal (TSM) into a Weyl TSM phase, following doping by magnetic impurities, is central to TSM applications. The magnetic field from polarized 𝑑 levels of magnetic impurities produces a field with a sharp local structure. To what extent magnetic impurities act in the same manner as an applied field and what are the effects of such a field on the electronic structure of a Dirac TSM are the subject of this paper. We present electronic structure calculations of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 with substitutional doping of Mn impurities in the dilute alloy range. Quasiparticle 𝐺⁡𝑊 (QS⁢𝐺⁡𝑊) ab initio electronic structure calculations are used in conjunction with 𝑘 · 𝑝 model Hamiltonian calculations. As expected, we observe the splitting of the Dirac points into pairs of Weyl points following the doping with Mn. We also show that the electronic structure of Mn-doped Cd 3⁢ As 2 can be emulated by the electronic structure of pristine Cd 3⁢ As 2 with an appropriate external magnetic field. Some properties of the conductivity of bulk Cd 3 ⁢As 2 for different magnetic field orientations are also investigated. Our results inform future opportunities for unique device functionality based on band structure tuning not found in conventional magnetic Weyl TSM.

Effect of Mg Content in Melt-Spun Mn–Bi–Mg–Sb–In Alloys on the Structure and Properties of Field-Annealed Magnets

Mn-Bi alloys modified with Mg and other elements were recently developed into promising rare-earth-free permanent magnets through successive melt-spinning, warm compaction, and short magnetic-field annealing. This letter reports herein on the crystal structures, texture, and magnetic properties observed in Mn 50 Bi 49-x Mg x Sb 0.5 In 0.5 alloys (x = 0, 1.5, 3.0, 4.5) throughout these processing steps. The Mg substitution favors MnBi-based intermetallic phases over the Bi- and Mn-based solid solutions and the stable α intermetallic phase over the metastable β' intermetallic phase. Magnesium increases the c/a ratio of the α phase lattice parameters for all studied x values and it increases the degree of the field-annealing-induced texture for x ≤ 3. The effect of Mg on coercivity is explained as combination of a positive one via the α phase magnetocrystalline anisotropy and a negative one via the development of texture. The effect of the substitution on the maximum energy product additionally involves the decreasing density of the alloys; the optimum x is found to be ≈3. Additionally reported are the thermal properties of selected alloys. The mechanism of field-annealing effect on the coercivity is briefly discussed.

A far‐red‐emitting (Gd,Y) 3 (Ga,Al) 5 O 12 :Mn 2+ ceramic phosphor with enhanced thermal stability for plant cultivation

Abstract As for plants, far‐red (FR) light with wavelength from 700 nm to 740 nm is critical for processes of photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis. Light‐controlled development depends on light to control cell differentiation, structural and functional changes, and finally converge into the formation of tissues and organs. Phosphor converted FR emission under LED excitation is a cost‐effective and high‐efficient way to provide artificial FR light source. With the aim to develop an efficient FR phosphor that can promote the plant growth, a series of gadolinium yttrium gallium garnet (GYGAG) transparent ceramic phosphors co‐doped with Mn 2+ and Si 4+ have been fabricated via chemical co‐precipitation method, followed sintered in O 2 and hot isostatic pressing in this work. Under UV excitation, the phosphor exhibited two bright and broadband red emission spectra due to Mn 2+ : 4 T 1 → 6 A 1 spin‐forbidden transition, and one of which located in the right FR region. And then, Ce 3+ ions were co‐doped as the activator to enhance the absorption at blue light region and the emission of Mn 2+ . It turns out that the emission band of GYGAG transparent ceramic phosphors matches well with the absorption band of phytochrome P FR , which means they are promising to be applied in plant cultivation light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) for modulating plant growth. Besides, the thermal stability of this material was investigated systematically, and an energy transferring model involves defects was also proposed to explain the phenomenon of abnormal temperature quenching.
