Validation of Atmospheric Correction of Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) Radiance Data Based on Radiative Transfer Modeling

An evaluation of atmospheric correction of AVIRIS data using radiative transfer codes LOWTRAN7 and MODTRAN is presented. The algorithm employed is based on a simple model of radiance L at each wavelength at the sensor that can be written approximately LAV=Lp+Tp, where subscript AV referes to AVIRIS, Lp is the path radiance and Tp is the diffuse + direct transmitted radiance of the atmosphere at AVIRIS.

X-Ray, EUV, UV and Optical Emissivities of Astrophysical Plasmas

This grant primarily covered the development of the thermal X-ray emission model code called APEC, which is meant to replace the Raymond and Smith (1977) code. The new code contains far more spectral lines and a great deal of updated atomic data. The code is now available (http://hea-www.harvard.edu/APEC), though new atomic data is still being added, particularly at longer wavelengths. While initial development of the code was funded by this grant, current work is carried on by N. Brickhouse, R. Smith and D. Liedahl under separate funding. Over the last five years, the grant has provided salary support for N. Brickhouse, R. Smith, a summer student (L. McAllister), an SAO predoctoral fellow (A. Vasquez), and visits by T. Kallman, D. Liedahl, P. Ghavamian, J.M. Laming, J. Li, P. Okeke, and M. Martos. In addition to the code development, the grant supported investigations into X-ray and UV spectral diagnostics as applied to shock waves in the ISM, accreting black holes and white dwarfs, and stellar coronae. Many of these efforts are continuing. Closely related work on the shock waves and coronal mass ejections in the solar corona has grown out of the efforts supported by the grant.

Method and apparatus for a single channel digital communications system

A method and apparatus are described for synchronizing a received PCM communications signal without requiring a separate synchronizing channel. The technique provides digital correlation of the received signal with a reference signal, first with its unmodulated subcarrier and then with a bit sync code modulated subcarrier, where the code sequence length is equal in duration to each data bit.

Boundary layer integral matrix procedure code modifications and verifications

A summary of modifications to Aerotherm's Boundary Layer Integral Matrix Procedure (BLIMP) code is presented. These modifications represent a preliminary effort to make BLIMP compatible with other JANNAF codes and to adjust the code for specific application to rocket nozzle flows. Results of the initial verification of the code for prediction of rocket nozzle type flows are discussed. For those cases in which measured free stream flow conditions were used as input to the code, the boundary layer predictions and measurements are in excellent agreement. In two cases, with free stream flow conditions calculated by another JANNAF code (TDK) for use as input to BLIMP, the predictions and the data were in fair agreement for one case and in poor agreement for the other case. The poor agreement is believed to result from failure of the turbulent model in BLIMP to account for laminarization of a turbulent flow. Recommendations for further code modifications and improvements are also presented.

The ergodic decomposition of stationary discrete random processes

The ergodic decomposition is discussed, and a version focusing on the structure of individual sample functions of stationary processes is proved for the special case of discrete-time random processes with discrete alphabets. The result is stronger in this case than the usual theorem, and the proof is both intuitive and simple. Estimation-theoretic and information-theoretic interpretations are developed and applied to prove existence theorems for universal source codes, both noiseless and with a fidelity criterion.

Symbol synchronization in convolutionally coded systems

Alternate symbol inversion is sometimes applied to the output of convolutional encoders to guarantee sufficient richness of symbol transition for the receiver symbol synchronizer. A bound is given for the length of the transition-free symbol stream in such systems, and those convolutional codes are characterized in which arbitrarily long transition free runs occur.

Maintenance of NASTRAN (R) as a state-of-the-art computer program

The maintenance requirements for a large, general purpose, finite element computer program are presented. The program is maintained as state-of-the-art on three computer systems (IBM, CDC, and UNIVAC) with respect to both finite element and computer technology. There are four primary areas involved in the maintenance effort: (1) error correction; (2) incorporation of advances in technology; (3) documentation; and (4) new level generation. The complexity of the maintenance effort is compounded by the sizes of the program (400,000 lines of code) and the documentation (7000 pages divided into seven manuals).

Coding for Single-Line Transmission

Digital transmission code combines data and clock signals into single waveform. MADCODE needs four standard integrated circuits in generator and converter plus five small discrete components. MADCODE allows simple coding and decoding for transmission of digital signals over single line.

Stability analysis of Centaur-in-Shuttle composite corrugated adapters

This paper evaluates analytically the structural integrity of discretely-loaded, graphite-epoxy, corrugated adapters for the Centaur-in-Shuttle, where combined compression and shear are the critical loads involved. With normal build-ups in the thickness at load introduction boundaries, the structural integrity for both compression and shear buckling was little (or not al all) affected by the discrete load introductions. The analytical tool employed was the STAGSC computer code, and both bifurction buckling and nonlinear collapse options were used; the latter option was limited to shear since postbuckling strength in compression for plate-type structures is governed by crippling strengths, which is not attainable by existing computer codes.

Transonic solutions for a multielement airfoil using the full-potential equation

Transonic flow solutions are obtained over a multielement airfoil (augmentor-wing) using the full-potential equation. Solutions obtained for a subcritical case and a strong shock case show good quantitative agreement with experiment in regions not dominated by viscous effects. In those regions where viscous effects are dominant, the results are still in good qualitative agreement. For the strong shock case, Mach number and angle-of-attack corrections were necessary to match experimental coefficient of lift. Typical results from the transonic augmentor-wing Potential Code on the Cray-1S computer require about 10 sec of CPU time for a three-order-of-magnitude drop in the maximum residual. The speed with which solutions can be generated, and the associated low cost, will make this code a practical tool for the design aerodynamicist.

A three-dimensional axisymmetric calculation procedure for turbulent flows in a radial vaneless diffuser

An analytical model is proposed to calculate the three-dimensional axisymmetric turbulent flowfield in a radial vneless diffuser. The model assumes that the radial and tangential boundary layer profiles are approximated by power law profiles. Then, using the integrated radial and tangential momentum and continuity equations for the boundary layer and corresponding inviscid equations for the core flow, there results six ordinary differential equation in six unknowns which are easily solved using a Runge-Kutta technique. A model is also proposed for fully developed flow. The results using this technique were compared with the results from a three-dimensional viscous, axisymmetric duct code and with experimental data and good quantitative agreement was obtained.

Laser anemometer measurements in a transonic axial-flow fan rotor

Laser anemometer surveys were made of the 3-D flow field in NASA rotor 67, a low aspect ratio transonic axial-flow fan rotor. The test rotor has a tip relative Mach number of 1.38. The flowfield was surveyed at design speed at near peak efficiency and near stall operating conditions. Data is presented in the form of relative Mach number and relative flow angle distributions on surfaces of revolution at nine spanwise locations evenly spaced from hub to tip. At each spanwise location, data was acquired upstream, within, and downstream of the rotor. Aerodynamic performance measurements and detailed rotor blade and annulus geometry are also presented so that the experimental results can be used as a test case for 3-D turbomachinery flow analysis codes.

Gas flows in elliptical galaxies

In preparation for the next generation of x ray telescopes, researchers have begun a program investigating the evolving x ray properties of elliptical galaxies. Their galaxy models consist of a modified King profile for the luminous portion of the galaxy and can include an isothermal dark halo comprising 90 percent of the total mass. The stellar population is assumed to form at a rate which decreases exponentially on a dynamical time scale with a Salpeter initial mass function. Stellar mass loss occurs instantaneously as stars evolve off the main sequence. All stars more massive than 8 solar mass produce type II supernovae, while less massive stars loss mass through a planetary nebulae. The evolving rate of type I supernovae is normalized to a fraction, gamma sub sn I, of Tammann's (1974) value. All of this information is then incorporated into a one-dimensional hydrodynamics code to determine the evolving dynamical state of the interstellar medium.

Frame error rate of the NASA concatenated coding system

For a concatenated coding system, the effect of interleaving depth on interleaved frame-error rate is compiled by simulation. Comparisons are made for three different inner convolutional codes; all three systems have a (255,223) 8-bit Reed-Solomon code as an outer code. For all the inner convolutional codes tested, an interleaving depth smaller that 4 causes substantial loss.
