$K^0_S$ and $Λ(\overline{Λ})$ two-particle femtoscopic correlations in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02TeV

Two-particle correlations are presented for $K^0_S$, $Λ$, and $\overline{Λ}$ strange hadrons as a function of relative momentum in lead-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.607 nb -1 and was collected using the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. These correlations are sensitive to quantum statistics and to final-state interactions between the particles. The source size extracted from the $K^0_S$$K^0_S$ correlations is found to decrease from 4.6 to 1.6 fm in going from central to peripheral collisions. Strong interaction scattering parameters (i.e., scattering length and effective range) are determined from the $ΛK^0_S$ and $ΛΛ$ (including their charge conjugates) correlations using the Lednický–Lyuboshitz model and are compared to theoretical and other experimental results.

Observation of ψ(3686) → $$ {\varOmega}^{-}{K}^{+}{\overline{\Xi}}^0 $$ + c.c.

Abstract Using (27.12±0.14)×10 8 ψ(3686) events collected with the BESIII detector at BEPCII, the decay ofψ(3686)→$$ {\varOmega}^{-}{K}^{+}{\overline{\Xi}}^0 $$ Ω − K + Ξ ¯ 0 + c.c.is observed for the first time. The branching fraction of this decay is measured to be$$ {\mathcal{B}}_{\psi (3686)\to {\varOmega}^{-}{K}^{+}{\overline{\Xi}}^0+\textrm{c}.\textrm{c}.} $$ B ψ 3686 → Ω − K + Ξ ¯ 0 + c . c . = (2.78 ± 0.40 ± 0.18) × 10 −6 , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Possible baryon excited states are searched for in this decay, but no evident intermediate state is observed with the current sample size.

Production of $ {\textrm{K}}_{\textrm{S}}^0 $, Λ ($ \overline{\Lambda}$), Ξ ± , and Ω ± in jets and in the underlying event in pp and p–Pb collisions

The production of strange hadrons ($K^{0}_{S}$, Λ, Ξ ± , and Ω ± ), baryon-to-meson ratios (Λ/$K^{0}_{S}$, Ξ/$K^{0}_{S}$, and Ω/$K^{0}_{S}$), and baryon-to-baryon ratios (Ξ/Λ, Ω/Λ, and Ω/Ξ) associated with jets and the underlying event were measured as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The inclusive production of the same particle species and the corresponding ratios are also reported. The production of multi-strange hadrons, Ξ ± and Ω ± , and their associated particle ratios in jets and in the underlying event are measured for the first time. In both pp and p–Pb collisions, the baryon-to-meson and baryon-to-baryon yield ratios measured in jets differ from the inclusive particle production for low and intermediate hadron p T (0.6–6 GeV/c). Ratios measured in the underlying event are in turn similar to those measured for inclusive particle production. In pp collisions, the particle production in jets is compared with P YTHIA 8 predictions with three colour-reconnection implementation modes. None of them fully reproduces the data in the measured hadron p T region. The maximum deviation is observed for Ξ ± and Ω ± which reaches a factor of about six. The event multiplicity dependence is further investigated in p–Pb collisions. In contrast to what is observed in the underlying event, there is no significant event-multiplicity dependence for particle production in jets. The presented measurements provide novel constraints on hadronisation and its Monte Carlo description. In particular, they demonstrate that the fragmentation of jets alone is insufficient to describe the strange and multi-strange particle production in hadronic collisions at LHC energies.

The first field application of a low-cost MPC for grid-interactive K-12 schools: Lessons-learned and savings assessment

K-12 schools are the largest energy consumers in the public sector, with their HVAC energy consumption representing the largest portion of their total energy use. While transitioning these schools to grid-interactive HVAC system operation through advanced controls offers significant financial and environmental benefits, and model predictive control (MPC) has been identified as a promising solution to achieve that, very few MPCs are affordable and have been deployed in K-12 schools. This situation raises concerns about the unclear real-world benefits of MPC technology among facility managers and industries. To address this gap, this paper presents a low-cost MPC solution that requires minimal control infrastructure costs and a unique field demonstration at a K-12 school, conducted for both cooling and heating seasons. This work adopted a previously developed MPC and extended it for use in the school application. The MPC aims to coordinate multiple packaged units to eliminate unnecessary peaks and shift cooling or heating loads in response to grid signals based on load conditions, while maintaining thermostat temperatures within school-defined bounds. Throughout the field tests, the MPC achieved a 24% reduction in peak demand during the cooling season and shifted cooling or heating loads by up to 16% in response to the school's utility tariff, considering load conditions, while also allowing end-users to override thermostat setpoints. Further, the paper also discusses the limitations of this study and future research directions for better performance of the MPC at K-12 schools.

Compression behavior of lithium fluoride up to 80 GPa and 2300 K

Here, the high-temperature compression behavior of lithium fluoride (LiF) has been determined to ∼80 GPa and 2300 K by means of high-resolution synchrotron-based x-ray diffraction in a laser-heated diamond-anvil cell. The room-temperature Vinet equation of state (EOS) for LiF yields an isothermal room-temperature, ambient-pressure lattice parameter a 0 = 4.028 (±0.003) Å, volume V 0 = 65.35 (±0.03) Å 3 , bulk modulus K 0 = 67.57 (±0.34) GPa, and its pressure derivative K 0 ’ = 4.64 (±0.03). This expanded experimental dataset is in good agreement with the LiF thermal equation of state by Myint et al. (2019) up to ∼2300 K and 25 GPa. At higher pressures and temperatures our data shows reduced thermal expansion compared to the prediction and may be particularly important for experiments at more extreme conditions.

Search for K + decays into the π + e + e - e + e - final state

The first search for ultra-rare K + decays into the π + e + e - e + e - final state is reported, using a dataset collected by the NA62 experiment at CERN in 2017–2018. An upper limit of 1.4 x 10 -8 at 90% CL is obtained for the branching ratio of the K + → π + e + e - e + e - decay, predicted in the Standard Model to be (7.2 ± 0.7) x 10 -11 . Upper limits at 90% CL are obtained at the level of 10 -9 for the branching ratios of two prompt decay chains involving pair-production of hidden-sector mediators: K + → π + aa,a → e + e - and K + → π + S,S → A'A',A' → e + e - .

Probabilistic Prediction of Geomagnetic Storms and the K p index

Geomagnetic activity is often described using summary indices to summarize the likelihood of space weather impacts, as well as when parameterizing space weather models. The geomagnetic index K p in particular, is widely used for these purposes. Current state-of-the-art forecast models provide deterministic K p predictions using a variety of methods – including empirically-derived functions, physics-based models, and neural networks – but do not provide uncertainty estimates associated with the forecast. This paper provides a sample methodology to generate a 3-hour-ahead K p prediction with uncertainty bounds and from this provide a probabilistic geomagnetic storm forecast. Specifically, we have used a two-layered architecture to separately predict storm (K p ≥ 5 – ) and non-storm cases. As solar wind-driven models are limited in their ability to predict the onset of transient-driven activity we also introduce a model variant using solar X-ray flux to assess whether simple models including proxies for solar activity can improve the predictions of geomagnetic storm activity with lead times longer than the L1-to-Earth propagation time. By comparing the performance of these models we show that including operationally-available information about solar irradiance enhances the ability of predictive models to capture the onset of geomagnetic storms and that this can be achieved while also enabling probabilistic forecasts.

Multiparticle-hole excitations in nuclei near N = Z = 20: $^{41}$K

This experimental study of high-spin structure near the N = Z = 20 region focuses on 41 K and also reports three newly observed γ transitions in 41 Ca from the same reaction. High-spin states were populated using the 26 Mg( 18 O, p2nγ) 41 K and 26 Mg( 18 O, 3nγ) 41 Ca reactions at a beam energy of 50 MeV at the Florida State University John D. Fox Superconducting Linear Accelerator Laboratory, employing the FSU high-purity germanium detector array. The level scheme of 41 K was extended to 12325 keV, possibly up to J π = 25/2 − or 27/2 + , by means of 25 new γ-ray transitions, and that of 41 Ca to 9916 keV. Linear polarization and angular-distribution measurements were used to provide spin and parity information for several states in the 41 K decay scheme. The results are compared with spsdpf cross-shell shell-model calculations using the FSU interaction. Configurations involving zero or one nucleon promoted from the sd to the fp shell reproduce the energies of many known states reasonably well, while multi-particle excitations reveal a more complex interplay of single-particle motion, collective pairing, and deformation, posing an interesting challenge for future theoretical work.

Probing strangeness canonical ensemble with K - , Φ(1020) and Ξ - production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{^S{NN}}$ = 3 GeV

We report on the first multi-differential measurement of φ meson and Ξ - hyperon production as well as the φ/K - and φ/Ξ - ratio in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{^S{NN}}$ = 3 GeV with the STAR experiment under its fixed target configuration at RHIC. φ mesons and Ξ - hyperons are measured through their hadronic decay channels, φ → K+K - and Ξ - → Λπ - . The transverse kinetic energy spectra of K - , φ and Ξ - are presented in different centrality and rapidity intervals. The total production yields and the ratios within a 4π coverage are calculated and compared to thermal model predictions. A calculation within the grand canonical ensemble framework shows a clear discrepancy from our measurement. Our data favor the canonical ensemble approach employing local strangeness conservation with a small strangeness correlation length (r c ≤ 4.2 fm) in 0–10% central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{^S{NN}}$ = 3 GeV.

Measurements of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ spectra in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at 13A to 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ produced in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$. The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm $/$\pi ^\pm $ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm $ transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $p+p$ and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

First Observation of Λπ + and Λπ - Signals near the $\bar{K}$N⁡(I=1) Mass Threshold in Λ$^+_c$ → Λ⁢π + ⁢π + π - Decay

Using the data sample of 980 fb -1 collected with the Belle detector operating at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider, we present the results of an investigation of the Λ⁢π + and Λ⁢π - invariant mass distributions looking for substructure in the decay Λ$^+_c$ → Λ⁢π + π + π - . We find a significant signal in each mass distribution. When interpreted as resonances, we find for the Λπ + (Λ⁢π - ) combination a mass of 1434.3 ± 0.6⁢(stat) ± 0.9⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 [1438.5 ± 0.9⁢(stat) ± 2.5⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 ], an intrinsic width of 11.5 ± 2.8⁢(stat) ± 5.3⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 [33.0 ± 7.5⁢(stat) ± 23.6⁢(syst) MeV/c 2 ] with a significance of 7.5⁢σ (6.2⁢σ). As these two signals are very close to the $\bar{K}N$ threshold, we also investigate the possibility of a $\bar{K}N$ cusp, and find that we cannot discriminate between these two interpretations due to the limited size of the data sample.

Search for the Lepton Flavor Violating Decays B + → K + τ ± ℓ ∓ ( ℓ = e , μ ) at Belle

We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decays B + → K + ⁢$\tau$ ±⁢ ℓ ∓ , with ℓ = (e,μ), using the full data sample of 772×10 6 B$\overline{B}$ pairs recorded by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e + ⁢e - collider. We use events in which one B meson is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode. We find no evidence for B ± → K ±⁢ $\tau$⁢ℓ decays and set upper limits on their branching fractions at the 90% confidence level in the (1 - 3) × 10 -5 range. The obtained limits are the world’s best results.

Decay spectroscopy of 160 Eu: Quasiparticle configurations of excited states and structure of K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd

Background: Detailed spectroscopy of neutron-rich, heavy, deformed nuclei is of broad interest for nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure. Nuclei in the r-process path and following freeze-out region impact the resulting r-process abundance distribution, and the structure of nuclei midshell in both proton and neutron number helps to understand the evolution of subshell gaps and large deformation in these nuclei. Purpose: We aim to improve the understanding of the nuclear structure of 160 Gd, specifically the K π = 4 + bands, as well as study the β decay of 160 Eu into 160 Gd. Methods: High-statistics decay spectroscopy of 160 Gd resulting from the β-decay of 160 Eu was collected using the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the TRIUMF-ISAC facility. Results: Two new excited states and ten new transitions were observed in 160 Gd. The β-decaying half-lives of the low- and high-spin isomers in 160 Eu were determined, and the low-spin state's half-life was measured to be t 1/2 = 26.0 (8) s, ≈ 16% shorter than previous measurements. Lifetimes of the two K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd were measured for the first time, as well as γ – γ angular correlations and mixing ratios of intense transitions out of those bandheads. Conclusions: Lifetimes and mixing ratios suggest that the hexadecapole phonon model of the K π = 4 + bandheads in 160 Gd is preferred over a simple two-state strong mixing scenario, although further theoretical calculations are needed to fully understand these states. Additionally, the 1999.0-keV state in 160 Gd heavily populated in β decay is shown to have positive parity, which raises questions regarding the structure of the high-spin β-decaying state in 160 Eu.

Observation of the singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Σ − K + π +

The singly Cabibbo-suppressed decay Λ c + → Σ − K + π + is observed for the first time with a statistical significance of 5.4 σ by using 4.5 fb − 1 of e + e − collision data collected at center-of-mass energies between 4.600 and 4.699 GeV with the BESIII detector at BEPCII. The absolute branching fraction of Λ c + → Σ − K + π + is measured to be ( 3.8 ± 1.2 stat ± 0.2 syst ) × 10 − 4 in a model-independent approach. This is the first observation of a Cabibbo-suppressed Λ c + decay involving Σ − in the final state. The ratio of branching fractions between Λ c + → Σ − K + π + and the Cabibbo-favored decay Λ c + → Σ − π + π + is observed to be ( 0.4 ± 0.1 ) s c 2 , where s c ≡ sin θ c = 0.2248 with θ c the Cabibbo mixing angle. ASb 3 Mn 9 O 19 (A = K or Rb): New Mn-Based 2D Magnetoplumbites with Geometric and Magnetic Frustration

Magnetoplumbites are one of the most broadly studied families of hexagonal ferrites, typically with high magnetic ordering temperatures, making them excellent candidates for permanent magnets. However, magnetic frustration is rarely observed in magnetoplumbites. Herein, the discovery, synthesis, and characterization of the first Mn-based magnetoplumbite, as well as the first magnetoplumbite involving pnictogens (Sb), ASb 3 Mn 9 O 19 (A = K or Rb) are reported. The Mn 3+ ( S = 2) cations, further confirmed by DC magnetic susceptibility and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, construct three geometrically frustrated sublattices, including Kagome, triangular, and puckered honeycomb lattices. Magnetic properties measurements revealed strong antiferromagnetic spin–spin coupling as well as multiple low-temperature magnetic features. Heat capacity data does not show any prominent λ-anomaly, suggesting minimal associated magnetic entropy. Moreover, neutron powder diffraction (NPD) implied the absence of long-range magnetic ordering in KSb 3 Mn 9 O 19 down to 3 K. However, several magnetic peaks are observed in RbSb 3 Mn 9 O 19 at 3 K, corresponding to an incommensurate magnetic structure. Interestingly, strong diffuse scattering is seen in the NPD patterns of both compounds at low angles and is analyzed by reverse Monte Carlo refinements, indicating short-range spin ordering related to frustrated magnetism as well as 2D magnetic correlations in ASb 3 Mn 9 O 19 (A = K or Rb).

Graphene K‐Tape Meshes for Densely Distributed Human Motion Monitoring

Abstract Wearable sensors that measure parameters associated with physical activity and bodily motions have been regarded as an indispensable tool for assessing personal wellness. Recent advances in nanocomposite strain sensors have been successfully used for monitoring skin strains and other strain‐derived physiological parameters. This study complements the existing body of work and presents a flexible, self‐adhering, fabric‐based wearable sensor for measuring skin strains and human motions. Graphene nanosheet thin films are directly spray‐coated onto kinesiology tape (K‐Tape) to obtain a self‐adhering strain sensor of high sensitivity and linearity. Their stable sensing performance and high repeatability are verified, while human subject tests confirm that they adequately capture muscle engagement during functional movements. In addition, densely distributed strain monitoring can be achieved using an electrical impedance tomography measurement approach and algorithm. Spatial strain sensing is successfully demonstrated using a single strip of piezoresistive K‐Tape, as well as when a K‐Tape network or mesh pattern is formed. The results show promise for using graphene K‐Tape meshes to measure how specific major muscle groups engage during different physical activities.

Surface Amorphization of Vanadium Dioxide (B) for K-ion Battery

Given the merits of low cost, fast ionic transport in electrolyte, and high operating voltage, potassium ion batteries (PIBs) are promising alternatives to lithium-ion batteries. However, developing suitable electrode materials that can reversibly accommodate large potassium ions is a great challenge. In this paper, guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is demonstrated that the strategy of interfacial engineering via surface amorphization of VO 2 (B) nanorods (SA-VO 2 ), which results in the formation of a crystalline core/amorphous shell heterostructure, enables superior K + storage performance in terms of large capacity, outstanding rate capability, and long cycle stability working as an anode for PIBs. DFT calculations reveal that the created crystalline/amorphous heterointerface in SA-VO 2 can substantially lower the surface energy, narrow the band gap, and reduce the K + diffusion barrier of VO 2 (B). These conditions enable enhanced K + storage capacity and rapid K + /electron transfer, which result in large capacity and outstanding rate capability. Using in situ X-ray diffraction and in situ transmission electron microscopy complemented by ex situ microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, it is unveiled that the superior cycling stability originates from the excellent phase reversibility with negligible strain response and robust mechanical behavior of SA-VO 2 upon (de)potassiation.

Clathrate XI K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 : A New Branch on the Clathrate Family Tree

Abstract The compositional screening of K‐Zn‐Sb ternary system aided by machine learning, rapid exploratory synthesis using KH salt‐like precursor and in situ powder X‐ray diffraction yielded a novel clathrate type XI K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 . This clathrate consists of a 3D Zn‐Sb framework hosting K + ions inside polyhedral cages, some of which are reminiscent of known clathrate types while others are unique to this structure type. The complex non‐centrosymmetric structure in the tetragonal space group was solved by means of single crystal X‐ray diffraction as a 6‐component twin due to pseudocubic symmetry and further confirmed by high‐resolution synchrotron powder X‐ray diffraction and state‐of‐the‐art scanning transmission electron microscopy. The electron‐precise composition of this clathrate yields narrow‐gap p ‐type semiconductor with extraordinarily low thermal conductivity due to displacement or “rattling” of K cations inside oversized cages and as well as to twinning, stacking faults and antiphase boundary defects.
