What Was Learned in Predicting Slender Airframe Aerodynamics with the F-16XL Aircraft

The second Cranked-Arrow Wing Aerodynamics Project, International, coordinated project has been underway to improve high-fidelity computational-fluid-dynamics predictions of slender airframe aerodynamics. The work is focused on two flow conditions and leverages a unique flight data set obtained with the F-16XL aircraft for comparison and validation. These conditions, a low-speed high-angle-of-attack case and a transonic low-angle-of-attack case, were selected from a prior prediction campaign wherein the computational fluid dynamics failed to provide acceptable results. In revisiting these two cases, approaches for improved results include better, denser grids using more grid adaptation to local flow features as well as unsteady higher-fidelity physical modeling like hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes/large-eddy simulation methods. The work embodies predictions from multiple numerical formulations that are contributed from multiple organizations where some authors investigate other possible factors that could explain the discrepancies in agreement (e.g., effects due to deflected control surfaces during the flight tests as well as static aeroelastic deflection of the outer wing). This paper presents the synthesis of all the results and findings and draws some conclusions that lead to an improved understanding of the underlying flow physics, finally making the connections between the physics and aircraft features.

Lattice Boltzmann and Navier-Stokes Cartesian CFD Approaches for Airframe Noise Predictions

Lattice Boltzmann (LB) and compressible Navier-Stokes (NS) equations based computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches are compared for simulating airframe noise. Both LB and NS CFD approaches are implemented within the Launch Ascent and Vehicle Aerodynamics (LAVA) framework. Both schemes utilize the same underlying Cartesian structured mesh paradigm with provision for local adaptive grid refinement and sub-cycling in time. We choose a prototypical massively separated, wake-dominated flow ideally suited for Cartesian-grid based approaches in this study - The partially-dressed, cavity-closed nose landing gear (PDCC-NLG) noise problem from AIAA's Benchmark problems for Airframe Noise Computations (BANC) series of workshops. The relative accuracy and computational efficiency of the two approaches are systematically compared. Detailed comments are made on the potential held by LB to significantly reduce time-to-solution for a desired level of accuracy within the context of modeling airframes noise from first principles.

Parameterizations of Chromospheric Condensations in dG and dMe Model Flare Atmospheres

The origin of the near-ultraviolet and optical continuum radiation in flares is critical for understanding particle acceleration and impulsive heating in stellar atmospheres. Radiative-hydrodynamic (RHD) simulations in 1D have shown that high energy deposition rates from electron beams produce two flaring layers at T approximately 10 (exp 4) K that develop in the chromosphere: a cooling condensation (downflowing compression) and heated non-moving (stationary) flare layers just below the condensation. These atmospheres reproduce several observed phenomena in flare spectra, such as the red-wing asymmetry of the emission lines in solar flares and a small Balmer jump ratio in M dwarf flares. The high beam flux simulations are computationally expensive in 1D, and the (human) timescales for completing NLTE models with adaptive grids in 3D will likely be unwieldy for some time to come. We have developed a prescription for predicting the approximate evolved states, continuum optical depth, and emergent continuum flux spectra of RHD model flare atmospheres. These approximate prescriptions are based on an important atmospheric parameter: the column mass (m(sub ref)) at which hydrogen becomes nearly completely ionized at the depths that are approximately in steady state with the electron beam heating. Using this new modeling approach, we find that high energy flux density (>F11) electron beams are needed to reproduce the brightest observed continuum intensity in IRIS data of the 2014 March 29 X1 solar flare, and that variation in m(sub ref) from 0.001 to 0.02 g cm (exp -2) reproduces most of the observed range of the optical continuum flux ratios at the peak of M dwarf flares.

OVERFLOW Analysis of Supersonic Retropropulsion Testingon the CobraMRV Mars Entry Vehicle Concept

The CFD solver OVERFLOW was used to simulate the CobraMRV undergoing supersonic retropropulsion (SRP) in the Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel as part of a pre-test study. Aerodynamics of the CobraMRV are summarized and the sensitivity of vehicle loads to CFD parameters at a subset of operating conditions are investigated. Specific numerical methods, boundary conditions, and turbulence modeling options have been selected after considering the complex phenomena in SRP flows. Proper shock-capturing methods and dynamic grid adaption are necessary to correctly capture vehicle loads and dynamics. Present data indicates that at particular conditions, upstream asymmetries originating from the tunnel inflow plane contribute to measurable asymmetries on the CobraMRV heatshield.

Uncertainty Quantification of CFD Model Assumptions Against Sonic Boom Noise Prediction of a Commercial Supersonic Transport

This paper presents the results of uncertainty modeling of sonic boom noise generation from commercial supersonic transport considering the Spalart-Allmaras (SA) turbulence modeling parameters as well as Mach number, angle of attack and altitude. Sample generation and analysis for this uncertainty model was performed by UQPCE, which is a software package developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. To build the uncertainty model, 42 cases of sonic boom noise calculation were performed. Computation of the ground noise can be briefly summarized in two steps. First, the near field pressure waveforms are sampled from CFD calculation using the NASA Langley’s FUN3D solver. Second, this information is passed to an atmospheric propagation code, sBOOM, which solves an augmented Burger’s equation and simulates how the near field waveforms will change while passing through the atmosphere. The ground signature is further processed to obtain the perceived loudness, PLdB. Having a high spatial resolution near the shockwave in the CFD calculation is critical in sonic boom noise prediction. Because the variation in the input parameters for the current uncertainty quantification (UQ) study is likely to lead to change in shock location, angle and strength, the grid adaptation for shock capturing is independently applied for each condition. The final mesh used in the CFD calculation consists of approximately 420 million cells. The pressure signatures are sampled at three, four and five body lengths away from the aircraft to make sure the three dimensional effects around the aircraft are resolved. The results of the UQ analysis shows that within the three aleatory variables, the angle of attack had the most impact against ground noise, followed by the altitude and the Mach number. Between the two SA model parameters, the Kármán constant (𝜅) was significantly more important than the turbulent Prandtl number (𝜎), but these two parameters were only marginally significant in the overall prediction variance in ground noise. The UQ procedure explained in this paper can be widely applied to other model parameters.
