Study of the processes $χ_{cJ}$ → $Ξ^–\overline{Ξ}^+$ and $Ξ^0 \overline{Ξ} ^0$

Using 448.1 x 10 6 $\psi$(3686) decays collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII $e^+e^-$ storage rings, the branching fractions and angular distributions of the decays $χ_{cJ}$ → $Ξ^–\overline{Ξ}^+$ and $Ξ^0 \overline{Ξ} ^0$ (J = 0, 1, 2) are measured based on a partial-reconstruction technique. The decays $χ_{c1}$ → $Ξ^0 \overline{Ξ} ^0$ and $χ_{c2}$ → $Ξ^0 \overline{Ξ} ^0$ are observed for the first time with statistical significances of 7σ and 15σ, respectively. The results of this analysis are in good agreement with previous measurements and have significantly improved precision.

Measurement of transverse polarization of Λ and hyperons inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

A surprisingly large transverse polarization of Λ hyperons in unpolarized hadron-nucleon/nucleus collisions has been observed for 50 years, and the origin of this polarization remains an important open question. Recently, theoretical frameworks have advanced in describing this puzzle with the polarizing fragmentation function (PFF). We report the first measurement of Λ and $\overline{Λ}$ transverse polarization inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions, which is directly attributed to the PFF. The polarization is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum, the fraction of the jet momentum carried by Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons, and the transverse momentum of Λ ($\overline{Λ}$) hyperons relative to the jet axis. Covering a wide jet-energy range, these data provide the first constraints on the gluon PFF and allow tests of TMD evolution and its universality.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of $D_s^+$ →$K^–K^+π^+π^+π^–$

Using $e^+e^–$ annihilation data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 6.32 fb –1 collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay $D_s^+$ →$K^–K^+π^+π^+π^–$ and determine the relative fractions and phases of different intermediate processes. Absolute branching fraction of $D_s^+$ →$K^–K^+π^+π^+π^–$ decay is measured to be (6.60 ± 0.47 stat. ± 0.38 syst. ) x 10 –3 . The dominant intermediate process is $D_s^+$ → $a_1$(1260) + $\phi, \phi$ → $K^–K^+ a_1$(1260) + → $ρπ^+$, $ρ → π^+π^–$, with a branching fraction of (5.15 ± 0.41 stat. ± 0.32 syst. ) x 10 –3 .

Cross section measurements of the processes $e^+e^–$ → $ωπ^0$ and $ωη$ at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV

The Born cross sections of the processes $e^+e^–$ → $ωπ^0$ and $e^+e^–$ → $ωη$ are measured at center-of-mass energies between 3.773 and 4.701 GeV using a total integrated luminosity of 22.7 fb –1 collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII collider. A simple $s^{-n}$ dependence for the continuum process can describe the measured Born cross sections. No significant contributions from the ψ(4160), Y(4230), Y(4360), ψ(4415), Y(4660) resonances are found, which indicates relative small branching fractions for these resonances into the $ωπ^0$ and $ωη$ final states.

Observation of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $D^+ → K^+π^0π^0$ and $D^+ → K^+π^0η$

By analyzing e + e - annihilation data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93 fb -1 collected at the center-of-mass energy of 3.773 GeV with the BESIII detector, we report the first observations of the doubly Cabibbo-suppressed decays D + → K + π 0 π 0 and D + → K + π 0 η. The branching fractions of D + → K + π 0 π 0 and D + → K + π 0 η are measured to be (2.1 ± 0.4 stat ± 0.1 syst ) x 10 -4 and (2.1 ± 0.5 stat ± 0.1 syst ) x 10 -4 with statistical significances of 8.8σ and 5.5σ, respectively. In addition, we search for the subprocesses D + → K * (892) + π 0 and D + → K * (892)+η with K * (892) + → K + π 0 . The branching fraction of D + → K * (892) + η is determined to be (4.4$^{+1.8}_{-1.5stat}$ ± 0.2 syst ) x 10 -4 , with a statistical significance of 3.2σ. No significant signal for D + → K * (892) + π 0 is found and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of this decay at the 90% confidence level to be 5.4 x 10 -4 .

Measurement of the phase between strong and electromagnetic amplitudes in the decay J/ψ → ϕη

The first direct measurement of the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes for a J/ψ decaying into a vector-pseudoscalar final state is performed using 26 energy points of e + e − annihilation data between 3.00 GeV and 3.12 GeV. The data sets were collected by the BESIII detector with a total integrated luminosity of 452 pb −1 . By investigating the interference pattern in the cross section lineshape of e + e − → ϕη, the relative phase between the strong and electromagnetic amplitudes of J/ψ decay is determined to be within [133°, 228°] at 68% confidence level.

Assessing compounding climate-related stresses and development pathways on the power sector in the central U.S.

Future configurations of the power system in the central region of the USA are dependent on relative costs of alternative power generation technologies, energy and environmental policies, and multiple climate-induced stresses. Higher demand in the summer months combined with compounding supply shocks in several power generation technologies can potentially cause a “perfect storm” leading to failure of the power system. Potential future climate stress must be incorporated in investment decisions and energy system planning and operation. We assess how projected future climate impacts on the power system would affect alternative pathways for the electricity sector considering a broad range of generation technologies and changes in demand. We calculate a “potential supply gap” metric for each pathway, system component, and sub-region of the US Heartland due to climate-induced effects on electricity demand and power generation. Potential supply gaps range from 5% in the North Central region under mild changes in climate to 21% in the Lakes-Mid Atlantic region under more severe climate change. We find increases in electricity demand to be more important in determining the size of the potential supply gap than stresses on power generation, while larger shares of renewables in the power system contribute to lower supply gaps. Our results provide a first step toward considering systemic climate impacts that may require changes in managing the grid or on potential additional capacity/reserves that may be needed.

MOF-Transformed In 2 O 3-x @C Nanocorn Electrocatalyst for Efficient CO 2 Reduction to HCOOH

For electrochemical CO 2 reduction to HCOOH, an ongoing challenge is to design energy efficient electrocatalysts that can deliver a high HCOOH current density (J HCOOH ) at a low overpotential. Indium oxide is good HCOOH production catalyst but with low conductivity. In this work, we report a unique corn design of In 2 O 3-x @C nanocatalyst, wherein In 2 O 3-x nanocube as the fine grains dispersed uniformly on the carbon nanorod cob, resulting in the enhanced conductivity. Excellent performance is achieved with 84% Faradaic efficiency (FE) and 11 mA cm –2 J HCOOH at a low potential of – 0.4 V versus RHE. At the current density of 100 mA cm –2 , the applied potential remained stable for more than 120 h with the FE above 90%. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the abundant oxygen vacancy in In 2 O 3-x has exposed more In 3+ sites with activated electroactivity, which facilitates the formation of HCOO* intermediate. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy also confirms In 3+ as the active site and the key intermediate of HCOO* during the process of CO 2 reduction to HCOOH.

Nanoarray-Based Monolithic Adsorbers for SO 2 Removal

Nanoarray-based monolithic catalysts have been developed for various applications, including CO oxidation, hydrocarbon combustion, lean NO x trapping, and low-pressure CO 2 hydrogenation. In this work, SO 2 adsorption properties have been explored and evaluated on the cordierite honeycomb monoliths grown with zinc oxide nanoarray (ZnO), zinc oxide nanoarray washcoated by BaCO 3 nanoparticles (ZnO/BaCO 3 ), and manganese oxide nanowire array with cryptomelane structure (MnO x ) at a temperature range from 50 to 425 °C. All samples show temperature-dependent SO 2 adsorption behaviors. The adsorption results reveal the performance order: MnO x > ZnO/BaCO 3 > ZnO, with ~ 90% SO 2 adsorbed in MnO x at 425 °C. Washcoated BaCO 3 contributes to the improvement of SO 2 adsorption in ZnO nanoarray, and the best performance displayed in MnO x may be attributed to their high specific surface area. After regeneration, nanoarrays all exhibit good thermal stability during test-regeneration cycles. No additional phase is formed in regenerated ZnO nanoarrays (ZnO-R), while BaCO 3 is converted to BaSO 4 in the regenerated ZnO/BaCO 3 nanoarrays (ZnO/BaCO 3 -R), and the sulfur species (possibly MnSO 4 ) and Mn 2 O 3 are found in regenerated MnO x nanoarrays (MnO x -R). It is noted that a small amount of sulfur species (possibly MnSO 4 ) may promote the SO 2 adsorption of MnO x -R at a lower temperature, while the formed Mn 2 O 3 contributes to the deactivation of MnO x -R.

Artificial Intelligence for the Electron Ion Collider (AI4EIC)

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a state-of-the-art facility for studying the strong force, is expected to begin commissioning its first experiments in 2028. This is an opportune time for artificial intelligence (AI) to be included from the start at this facility and in all phases that lead up to the experiments. The second annual workshop organized by the AI4EIC working group, which recently took place, centered on exploring all current and prospective application areas of AI for the EIC. This workshop is not only beneficial for the EIC, but also provides valuable insights for the newly established ePIC collaboration at EIC. This paper summarizes the different activities and R&D projects covered across the sessions of the workshop and provides an overview of the goals, approaches and strategies regarding AI/ML in the EIC community, as well as cutting-edge techniques currently studied in other experiments.

In situ and ex situ studies of anomalous eutectic formation in undercooled Ni–Sn alloys

Anomalous eutectic formation in undercooled Ni-Sn alloys was investigated by in situ X-ray diffraction and ex situ remelting and annealing experiments. Dynamic recrystallization and partial remelting of primary solids followed by repeated nucleation and growth of eutectic grains in the mushy zone were revealed by time-resolved X-ray diffraction. Ex situ experiments demonstrated that partial remelting of near-equilibrium solidified alloys of eutectic or near-eutectic composition can convert regular lamellar eutectic into anomalous eutectic, whereas high-temperature annealing of splat-quenched alloys of similar composition can convert eutectic or two-phase dendrites into anomalous eutectic. It is concluded that compared to ripening in solid-states, partial remelting of eutectic or two-phase dendrites in a mushy zone provides a more realistic mechanism for anomalous eutectic formation in undercooled solidification of Ni-Sn eutectic alloys. Coupled effect of Cr and Al on interactions between a prismatic interstitial dislocation loop and an edge dislocation line in Fe-Cr-Al alloy

Segregation of alloying elements to a prismatic dislocation loop under irradiation is an important phenomenon in understanding the role of loops in radiation effects in alloys. In this work, various segregation sequences of Cr and Al atoms to a $\langle$100$\rangle$ and a 1/2 $\langle$111$\rangle$ prismatic dislocation loop in a Fe-Cr-Al alloy are explored using molecular dynamics method and ab initio energy calculation. Here, the results reveal that Cr can readily segregate to the loops while Al atoms cannot by themselves, but the segregated Cr atoms are able to promote Al segregation at the loops, defined as a coupled segregation of Cr and Al. After interacting with Cr and Al, a previously mobile 1/2 $\langle$111$\rangle$ loop becomes sessile. Al segregation through the coupled segregation process can further affect the pinning behavior of a dislocation loop to an edge dislocation motion. By varying the Al fraction in the segregated solutes, a nonlinear dependence of the pinning effect on dislocation motion is determined. At lower fractions, the pinning strength increases with the increasing Al fraction until Al fraction reaches a critical value of about 19%, above which the pinning strength decreases with further increase of Al fraction. All these results suggest that, in addition to the effect of Al on the surface resistance to oxidation, Al effect on the dislocation loop behavior is important to optimize the composition of Fe-Cr-Al alloys for their applications in accident tolerant fuel concepts.
