Layer-dependent spin-resolved electronic structure of ferromagnetic triple-layered ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10

High-resolution angle- and spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) of the triple-layered ruthenate Sr4Ru3O10 reveals features of the electronic structure that extend our understanding of the layered strontium ruthenates. The spectra near the Fermi energy are very different from the nonmagnetic analogues Sr2RuO4 and Sr3Ru2O7 with distinct Fermi surfaces for wide electronlike minority spin bands around the zone center and narrow holelike majority spin Fermi surface contours around the zone corners. The most dramatic results are two narrow spectral peaks ∼30 meV below the Fermi level, a spin-minority holelike band at the Brillouin zone center, and a spin-majority saddle-band van Hove singularity at the zone edge, which exhibits almost 100% spin polarization at low temperature, and a strong temperature dependent coherence-incoherence crossover attributed to Hund metal correlations. Quantitative comparison of the ARPES to spin-polarized density functional theory (DFT) calculations identify the specific antibonding and nonbonding orbital origins of the narrow bands, with a prediction of different spatial localization in the central and outer layers. This is shown to be consistent with experimental ARPES multizone matrix element intensity variations, and implicates outer-layer-specific control of the in-plane metamagnetism. The renormalization of the bands relative to the mean-field DFT, the demonstration of spin-polarized oxygen bands, and of spin-minority and spin-majority band-crossing hybridization provide a more complete picture of the magnetism which displays aspects of both delocalized and local moment behavior.

High‐Throughput Screening Assisted Discovery of a Stable Layered Anti‐Ferromagnetic Semiconductor: CdFeP 2 Se 6

Recent advances in 2D magnetism have heightened interest in layered magnetic materials due to their potential for spintronics. In particular, layered semiconducting antiferromagnets exhibit intriguing low-dimensional semiconducting behavior with both charge and spin as carrier controls. However, synthesis of these compounds is challenging and remains rare. Here, first-principles based high-throughput search is conducted to screen potentially stable mixed metal phosphorous trichalcogenides (MM ' P 2 X 6 , where M and M ' are transition metals and X is a chalcogenide) that have a wide range of tunable bandgaps and interesting magnetic properties. Among the potential candidates, a stable semiconducting layered magnetic material, CdFeP 2 Se 6 , that exhibits a short-range antiferromagnetic order at T N = 21 K with an indirect bandgap of 2.23 eV is successfully synthesized . This work suggests that high-throughput screening assisted synthesis can be an effective method for layered magnetic materials discovery.

Ultralow Voltage Manipulation of Ferromagnetism

Spintronic elements based on spin transfer torque have emerged with potential for on-chip memory, but they suffer from large energy dissipation due to the large current densities required. In contrast, an electric-field-driven magneto-electric storage element can operate with capacitive displacement charge and potentially reach 1-10 µJ cm -2 switching operation. In this paper, magneto-electric switching of a magnetoresistive element is shown, operating at or below 200 mV, with a pathway to get down to 100 mV. A combination of phase detuning is utilized via isovalent La substitution and thickness scaling in multiferroic BiFeO 3 to scale the switching energy density to ≈10 µJ cm -2 . This work provides a template to achieve attojoule-class nonvolatile memories.

Machine Learning for First Principles Calculations of Material Properties for Ferromagnetic Materials

The investigation of finite temperature properties using Monte-Carlo (MC) methods requires a large number of evaluations of the system’s Hamiltonian to sample the phase space needed to obtain physical observables as function of temperature. DFT calculations can provide accurate evaluations of the energies, but they are too computationally expensive for routine simulations. To circumvent this problem, machine-learning (ML) based surrogate models have been developed and implemented on high-performance computing (HPC) architectures. In this paper, we describe two ML methods (linear mixing model and HydraGNN) as surrogates for first principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations with classical MC simulations. These two surrogate models are used to learn the dependence of target physical properties from complex compositions and interactions of their constituents. We present the predictive performance of these two surrogate models with respect to their complexity while avoiding the danger of overfitting the model. An important aspect of our approach is the periodic retraining with newly generated first principles data based on the progressive exploration of the system’s phase space by the MC simulation. The numerical results show that HydraGNN model attains superior predictive performance compared to the linear mixing model for magnetic alloy materials.

From a conventional ferromagnetism to a frustrated magnetism: An unexpected role of Fe in Nd(Al 1-x Fe x ) 2 (x ≤ 0.2)

The structure and magnetic properties of Nd(Al 1-x Fe x ) 2 alloys with x = 0, 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2, which adopt cubic MgCu 2 -type structure with space group Fd3¯m, are studied using x-ray powder diffraction, static and dynamic magnetization, and calorimetric measurements. The lattice constant decreases linearly with increasing Fe content from 8.0106(4) Å to 7.9044(4) Å. Large thermal irreversibilities between zero-field-cooled and field-cooled conditions are observed for all substituted samples. Here, the magnetic transition temperatures exhibit a minimum for x = 0.1, and coercive fields at 2 K increase from 70 Oe for x = 0 to 6.3 kOe for x = 0.2. The absence of λ-type peak in the heat capacity data, frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibility, and memory effects indicate formation of a cluster-glass magnetic state when x ≥ 0.1.

Soliton motion induced along ferromagnetic skyrmion chains in chiral thin nanotracks

Using atomistic magnetic simulations we investigate the soliton motion along a pinned skyrmion chain containing an interstitial skyrmion. We find that the soliton can exhibit stable motion along the chain without a skyrmion Hall effect for an extended range of drives. Under a constant drive the solitons have a constant velocity. We also measure the skyrmion velocity–current curves and identify the signatures of different phases including a pinned phase, stable soliton motion, and quasi-free motion at higher drives where all of the skyrmions depin from the pinning centers and move along the rigid wall. In the quasi-free motion regime, the velocity is oscillatory due to the motion of the skyrmions over the pinning sites. For increasing pinning strength, the onset of soliton motion shifts to higher values of current density. We also find that for stronger pinning, the characteristic velocity–current shape is affected by the annihilation of single or multiple skyrmions in the drive interval over which the soliton motion occurs. Our results indicate that stable skyrmion soliton motion is possible and that the solitons could be used as information carriers instead of the skyrmions themselves for technological applications.
