We present a laser-assisted electron injection scheme for beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. The laser is collinear with the driver and triggers the injection of hot electrons into the plasma wake by interaction with a thin solid target. We present a baseline case using the AWAKE Run 2 parameters and then perform variations on key parameters to explore the scheme. It is found that the trapped witness electron charge may be tuned by altering laser parameters, with a strong dependence on the phase of the wake upon injection. Normalized emittance settles at the order of micrometres and varies with witness charge. The scheme is robust to misalignment, with a 1/10th plasma skin-depth offset ( 20 μ m for the AWAKE case) having a negligible effect on the final beam. The final beam quality is better than similar existing schemes, and several avenues for further optimization are indicated. The constraints on the AWAKE experiment are very specific, but the general principles of this mechanism can be applied to future beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator experiments. We report on the study of electron kinetics induced by intense femtosecond (fs) laser excitation of electrons in the 5d band of Au. Changes in the electron system are observed from the temporal evolution of ac conductivity and conduction electron density. The results reveal an increase of electron thermalization time with excitation energy density, contrary to the Fermi-liquid behavior of the decrease of thermalization time associated with the heating of conduction electrons. This is attributed to the severe mitigation of photoexcitation by Auger decay. The study also uncovers the shortening of 5d hole lifetime with the increase of photoexcitation rates. Overall, these unique findings provide valuable insights for understanding electron kinetics under extreme nonequilibrium conditions.

The LCOE Content Model provides data submitters with an easy and consistent means of uploading data that can be used to calculate the levelized cost of energy for MHK devices. These data are important to DOE and will be used to develop data products that provide quantitative information to guide and support programmatic decisions. Data will also be used to evaluate MHK products and determine costs and can help data users compare the combination of capital costs and operations and maintenance over time. The ultimate goal is to use these data to perform research and tailor programs to best benefit the industry.

X-pinches are a pulsed power wire-array configuration that produce nanosecond and micron-scale X-ray sources with numerous applications. The earliest embodiment of the X-pinch inspired its name, as it is typically composed of two or more fine (5-50 µm) wires crossed into the shape of an X (Fig. 1a). The ‘X’ ablates when subjected to large (10 1 -10 4 kA), fast-rising (~1 kA/ns) currents, and extreme magnetic pressure at the cross-point constricts the ablated plasma, which develops instabilities and then pinches to near-zero radius, localized ‘hot spots’, emitting X-rays from a sub-nanosecond and 1 µm scale source characteristic of a hot (~1 keV), dense (10% solid density) plasma. A subsequent gap forms where the hot spot(s) occurred, across which substantial potential accelerates electron beams (e-beams) that generate larger, longer-lasting X-ray bursts composed of harder X-rays.

The mission for our work is to develop high-density, monolithic U-Mo fuel for research reactor conversions. Current reactors use HEU dispersion fuels. Both domestic and abroad, programs are converting to a monolithic LEU-10Mo fuel source.
