Hard X-ray properties of cataclysmic variables

A brief summary is presented of results for AM Her, EX Hya, SS Cyg, and U Gem obtained with the high-energy detectors of the HEAO A2 experiment from 2-60 keV and the Solid State Spectrometer Experiment with the Monitor Proportional Control on the Einstein Observatory. It is found that the magnetic variable AM Her and the dwarf novae are similar in having bremsstrahlung of similar luminosity with temperatures for the dwarf novae that can approach that for AM Her and in flickering on a time scale of 5-15 min. But in general these dwarf novae temperatures are about 2-10 times lower. Only in Am Her is there evidence in the spectrum and eclipses for a small spot very close to the white dwarf surface. Most of the hard X-rays in SS Cyg, EX Hya, and U Gem are not pulsed, and the hard X-ray fluxes observed have never been significantly absorbed or degraded.

Phase 1 of the First Small Power System Experiment (engineering Experiment No. 1). Volume 2: System Concept Selection

The development of a modular solar thermal power system for application in the 1 to 10 MWe range is presented. The system is used in remote utility applications, small communities, rural areas, and for industrial uses. Systems design and systems optimization studies are conducted which consider plant size, annual capacity factors, and startup time as variables. Investigations are performed on the energy storage requirements and type of energy storage, concentrator design and field optimization, energy transport, and power conversion subsystems. The system utilizes a Rankine cycle, an axial flow steam turbine for power conversion, and heat transfer sodium for collector fluid.

Viking lander imaging investigation during extended and continuation automatic missions. Volume 2: Lander 2 picture catalog of experiment data record

Images returned by the two Viking landers during the extended and continuation automatic phases of the Viking Mission are presented. Information describing the conditions under which the images were acquired is included with skyline drawings showing the images positioned in the field of view of the cameras. Subsets of the images are listed in a variety of sequences to aid in locating images of interest. The format and organization of the digital magnetic tape storage of the images are described. A brief description of the mission and the camera system is also included.

Spacelab 2 Upper Atmospheric Modification experiment over Arecibo. I - Neutral gas dynamics

The Orbital Maneuvering Subsystem engines of the Space Shuttle were used to inject H2, CO2, H2O and other combustion products into the upper atmosphere over the Arecibo Observatory. Images of the airglow enhancements that resulted from chemical reactions between the exhaust gases and the F-layer plasma showed that the exhaust vapor trail came to rest 80 km downstream from the center of the burn. A computer simulation of the gas dynamics shows that the region of the burn was dominated by a 'snow plow' effect sweeping out a corridor in the atmosphere and collisionally heating the injected vapors.

Flash melting of chondrule precursors in excess of 1600 C. Series 1: Type 2 (B1) chondrule composition experiments

Several questions in chondrule production remain an enigma despite years of experiments. What were the melting temperatures experienced by chondrules? What were the physical characteristics of chondrule precursors? How and why did volatile elements (i.e. Na) found within chondrules survive the formation process? We present the initial results of a series of experiments designed to investigate the above questions by using flash melting to duplicate the melting stage of chondrule formation.

Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) catalog of observations. Volume 3: Experiments 63058-99771 (February 1988 - November 1989)

A catalog of a observations (experiments) obtained by the Ultraviolet Spectrometer and Polarimeter (UVSP) on the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) from Nov. 1980 to Nov. 1989 is provided. The information for each entry includes the time of each observation, the observed position of the Sun, the spacecraft roll angle, the slit used, and instrument parameters such as raster size, pixel spacing, wavelength, polarimeter usage, gate time, etc. The document is split into three volumes: Volume 1 contains experiments 1-30719 (Feb. 1980 - Apr. 1985); Volume 2 contains experiments 30720-63057 (Apr. 1985 - Feb. 1988); and Volume 3 contains experiments 63058-99771 (Feb. 1988 - Nov. 1989).

High Reynolds Number Hybrid Laminar Flow Control (HLFC) Flight Experiment: Aerodynamic Design - Report 2

This document describes the aerodynamic design of an experimental hybrid laminar flow control (HLFC) wing panel intended for use on a Boeing 757 airplane to provide a facility for flight research on high Reynolds number HLFC and to demonstrate practical HLFC operation on a full-scale commercial transport airplane. The design consists of revised wing leading edge contour designed to produce a pressure distribution favorable to laminar flow, definition of suction flow requirements to laminarize the boundary layer, provisions at the inboard end of the test panel to prevent attachment-line boundary layer transition, and a Krueger leading edge flap that serves both as a high lift device and as a shield to prevent insect accretion on the leading edge when the airplane is taking off or landing.
