Monotonic multi-state quantum f -divergences

We use the Tomita–Takesaki modular theory and the Kubo–Ando operator mean to write down a large class of multi-state quantum f-divergences and prove that they satisfy the data processing inequality. For two states, this class includes the (α, z)-Rényi divergences, the f-divergences of Petz, and the Rényi Belavkin-Staszewski relative entropy as special cases. The method used is the interpolation theory of non-commutative Lωp spaces, and the result applies to general von Neumann algebras, including the local algebra of quantum field theory. We conjecture that these multi-state Rényi divergences have operational interpretations in terms of the optimal error probabilities in asymmetric multi-state quantum state discrimination.

Formula for the ionisation rate of an atom or ion in a strong electromagnetic field for numerical simulation

A formula is proposed for calculating the rate of field ionisation of an atom or ion, taking into account both tunnel ionisation and barrier suppression ionisation. Compared with the previous formula proposed in 2018, it more accurately describes the transition region between both ionisations and is determined mainly by two parameters: the ionisation potential of an atom or ion and the amplitude of an external electric field. This makes the presented formula suitable for use in numerical packages simulating the interaction of high-power laser radiation with matter by the particle-in-cell (PIC) method. (paper)

Violation of energy conditions and the gravitational radius of the proton

The energy-momentum tensor (EMT) of the proton encodes fundamental information about its mass, pressure, and shear distributions. Using recent lattice QCD data for the gravitational form factors, we show that the Breit-frame Wigner EMT may be of Hawking-Ellis type IV in the proton’s core. Such EMT violates all pointwise energy conditions and lacks a causal rest frame so that the usual mechanical picture fails at short distances. We define the —a new hadronic observable—marking the scale where the EMT becomes ordinary (type I) and the classical interpretation is restored. We also derive from the averaged null energy condition nonperturbative, model-independent quantum field theory constraints on gravitational form factors.

Using an Atom Interferometer to Infer Gravitational Entanglement Generation

If gravitational perturbations are quantized into gravitons in analogy with the electromagnetic field and photons, the resulting graviton interactions should lead to an entangling interaction between massive objects. We suggest a test of this prediction. To do this, we introduce the concept of interactive quantum information sensing. This novel sensing protocol is tailored to provable verification of weak dynamical entanglement generation between a pair of systems. We show that this protocol is highly robust to typical thermal noise sources. The sensitivity can moreover be increased both using an initial thermal state and/or an initial phase of entangling via a non-gravitational interaction. We outline a concrete implementation testing the ability of the gravitational field to generate entanglement between an atomic interferometer and mechanical oscillator. Preliminary numerical estimates suggest that near-term devices could feasibly be used to perform the experiment.

Measurement of the Kicker transient magnetic field in the Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermilab

The Muon g-2 experiment at Fermilab has the main goal to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_µ = \frac{g−2}{2}$ to a precision of 140 parts per billion (ppb), which means 4 times improvement in precision with respect to the final result from BNL: a µ (expt.B N L) = 11659208.0(6.3)×10 −10 (540 ppb) So far only RUN1 data have been analyzed showing the following improvement: a µ (expt.RU N1) = 116592061×10 −11 (465 ppb) In this report I summarize the work done at the g-2 experiment during my summer internship at Fermilab where I worked on the attempt to estimate the kicker transient field contribution in the Muon g-2 experiment.

The first measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment from the Fermilab Muon g-2 collaboration

This paper will cover the physics and methods behind Fermilab’s Muon g-2 Experiment, along with the long-awaited results from Run-1. The experiment was undertaken to resolve the tension between the Standard Model and the previous measurement taken at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The measured value of the muon magnetic anomaly is a µ (FNAL) = 116592040(54) × 10 -11 . This result is in good agreement with Brookhaven’s previous measurement. The new world average, a µ (Exp) = 116592061(41) × 10 -11 , shows a difference from the theoretical value of the Standard Model (SM), a µ (SM) = 116591810(43) × 10 -11 , of 4.2 standard deviations, strongly hinting at physics beyond the Standard Model. The experiment requires the simultaneous measurement of the muon precession frequency, the magnetic field, and the muons’ distribution in the field. All three of these measurements will be discussed in context, along with the main systematic corrections and uncertainties.

Discontinuity in RG flows across dimensions: entanglement, anomaly coefficients and geometry

We study the entanglement entropy associated with a holographic RG flow from AdS 7 to AdS 4 × $\mathbb{H}$ 3 , where $\mathbb{H}$ 3 is a 3-dimensional hyperbolic manifold with curvature κ. The dual six-dimensional RG flow is disconnected from Lorentz-invariant flows. In this context we address various notions of central charges and identify a monotonic candidate c-function that captures IR aspects of the flow. The UV behavior of the holographic entanglement entropy and, in particular its universal term, display an interesting dependence on the curvature, κ. We then contrast our holographic results with existing field theory computations in six dimensions and find a series of new corrections in curvature to the universal term in the entanglement entropy.

Transient phenomena in the axion assisted Schwinger effect

Particle production induced by a time-dependent background is well understood as the projection of the time-evolved initial state onto a set of final states. While the asymptotic initial and final states are well defined in the usual way, the definition of particles and antiparticles at intermediate times in the presence of external fields is ambiguous. These external fields moreover induce divergences which require regularization. In this paper we clarify some subtleties in the computation of transient effects in physical quantities for fermions in a homogeneous axion background, including Schwinger production in background electromagnetic fields. The presence of the axion requires particular care as well as knowledge of the UV theory when regulating the theory and computing the vacuum contribution to the fermion energy.

Quantum interference in gravitational particle production

Previous numerical investigations of gravitational particle production during the coherent oscillation period of inflation displayed unexplained fluctuations in the spectral density of the produced particles. We argue that these features are due to the quantum interference of the coherent scattering reactions that produce the particles. We provide accurate analytic formulae to compute the particle production amplitude for a conformally- coupled scalar field, including the interference effect in the kinematic region where the production can be interpreted as inflaton scattering into scalar final states via graviton exchange.

On causality conditions in de Sitter spacetime

We carefully consider the Shapiro time delay due to black holes and shockwaves in de Sitter spacetime and study the implications for causality. We discuss how causality conditions of AdS and flat spacetime can be applied in de Sitter spacetime, using spatial shifts measured on the boundary to define 'fastest null geodesics' and taking into account the 'stretching' of the de Sitter Penrose diagram. We consider the propagation of a massless spin-1 field with a non-minimal coupling in a de Sitter shockwave background as an illustrative example. Here, we also briefly discuss connections to the average null energy condition.

Energizing charged particles by an orbit instability in a slowly rotating magnetic field

In this work, the stability of charged particle motion in a uniform magnetic field with an added spatially uniform transverse rotating magnetic field (RMF) is studied analytically. It is found that the stability diagram of a single particle's orbit depends critically on the chosen boundary conditions. We show that for many boundary conditions and wide regions in the parameter space, RMFs oscillating far below the cyclotron frequency can cause linear instabilities in the motion which break μ invariance and energize particles. Such energization may appear at odds with the adiabatic invariance of μ; however, adiabatic invariance is an asymptotic result and does not preclude such heating by magnetic fields oscillating at slow frequencies. This mechanism may contribute to heating in the edge plasma of field-reversed configurations (FRCs) in rotamak-FRC experiments. Furthermore, these RMF-driven instabilities may significantly enhance azimuthal current drive during the formation of FRCs in such devices.

Charge response and energy calibration of ProtoDUNE-

ProtoDUNE-SP is a test bed liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) for the far detector of the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). This LArTPC was calibrated using cosmic-ray cathode-crossing muons, electric field maps, and purity-monitor data to correct for nonuniformities in the detector response and cosmic-ray stopping muons to perform the absolute energy scale calibration for further physics analysis.

Dynamic Aperture of the PIP-II Accumulator Ring (PAR)

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) will include a superconducting linear accelerator which will accelerate H- ions to 800MeV, at an intensity never seen before. A proposed PIP-II Accumulator Ring (PAR) can reduce the injection losses to the booster, enhance the ramp up of the Long Baseline Neutrino Facility (LBNF) and support experiments in Dark Sector Physics. When the beam is circulating in PAR at its full intensity, it will then be transferred to the Booster via single turn injection. Strong PAR focusing results in larger phase advances, shorter focal lengths and higher machine tunes, which creates robust beam envelope control. Particles will be able to survive modest excursions from the elliptical phase-space trajectories of linear optics, and any loss of particles would be due to reduced dynamic aperture. The values for tunes and chromaticities are flexible and will continue to evolve as the lattice matures. Since there will be non-linear terms impacting the particles’ trajectories, tracking will include realistic magnetic field errors and installation alignment errors to determine the dynamic aperture as a function of the machine tunes. This will allow us to determine the optimum operating point in phase-space.

Lattice field theory beyond the standard model

We conducted theoretical studies in high energy physics beyond the standard model, using lattice gauge theory techniques, with a particular emphasis on supersymmetric fields theories. There are many reasons for formulating and studying such theories using this first principles approach, with the goal in mind of repeating the successes of lattice quantum chromodynamics—which are quite substantial.

Dark matter decay signals in cosmic filaments

Cosmic filaments form the backbone of the cosmic web, yet their properties and evolution remain uncertain. Using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate the dark matter density profiles in filaments and their implications for dark matter decay signals. We show that GeV-scale dark matter particles decaying into electron-positron pairs can produce detectable radio synchrotron emission. By leveraging stacked filament radio data, we place stringent constraints on the dark matter decay lifetime, improving existing limits by up to two orders of magnitude for strong filamentary magnetic fields.

The inflated Chern-Simons number in spectator chromo-natural inflation

The chromo-natural inflation (CNI) scenario predicts a potentially detectable chiral gravitational wave signal, generated by a Chern-Simons coupling between a rolling scalar axion field and an SU(2) gauge field with an isotropy-preserving classical background during inflation. However, the generation of this signal requires a very large integer Chern-Simons level, which can be challenging to explain or embed in a UV-complete model. We show that this challenge persists in the phenomenologically viable spectator field CNI (S-CNI) model. Furthermore, we show that a clockwork scenario giving rise to a large integer as a product of small integers can never produce a Chern-Simons level large enough to have successful S-CNI phenomenology. We briefly discuss other constraints on the model, both in effective field theory based on partial-wave unitarity bounds and in quantum gravity based on the Weak Gravity Conjecture, which may be relevant for further explorations of alternative UV completions.

Large U(1) charges from flux breaking in 4D F-theory models

We study the massless charged spectrum of U(1) gauge fields in F-theory that arise from flux breaking of a nonabelian group. The U(1) charges that arise in this way can be very large. In particular, using vertical flux breaking, we construct an explicit 4D F-theory model with a U(1) decoupled from other gauge sectors, in which the massless/light fields have charges as large as 657. This result greatly exceeds prior results in the literature. We argue heuristically that this result may provide an upper bound on charges for light fields under decoupled U(1) factors in the F-theory landscape. We also show that the charges can be even larger when the U(1) is coupled to other gauge groups.
