Lightweight porous plastic plaque

The porosity and platability of various materials were investigated to determine a suitable substrate for nickel-plated electrodes. Immersion, ultrasonics, and flow-through plating techniques were tried using nonproprietary formulations, and proprietary phosphide and boride baths. Modifications to the selected material include variations in formulation and treatment, carbon loading to increase conductivity, and the incorporation of a grid. Problems to be solved relate to determining conductivities and porosities as a function of amount of nickel plated on the plastics; loading; charge and discharge curves of electrodes at different current densities; cell performance; and long-term degradation of electrodes.

Internally folded expanded metal electrode for battery construction

A battery system is disclosed which includes folded grids of expanded metal inserted through non-conductive substrates and pasted with electrochemically active materials. In the most preferred embodiment, a frame is provided with a plastic insert, and slots are provided in the latter to receive the expanded metal grid. After suitable coinage of the grid and insertion through the plastic film, the grid is sealed and pasted on opposite sides with positive and negative active material. A battery is assembled using one or a plurality of the resulting electrode elements, with separators, to produce a high-power, lead-acid battery. The folded grid provides many of the design benefits of standard bipolar construction.

Energy-conversion research and development with diminiodes

Diminiodes are variable-gap cesium diodes with plane emitters and guarded collectors a few millimeters in diameter. This miniaturization allows the electrodes to be made of little pieces of rare materials like single crystals of unusual metals or metallides. In addition to smallness, diminiode advantages include simplicity, precision, fabrication ease, parts interchangeability, cleanliness, full instrumentation, ruggedness, and economy. The diminiode design also stresses effective, economical use with computers that control, collect, and correlate thermionic current and voltage data. Such diminiode tests completed recently for ultrapure metal electrodes produced relatively low, sharply defined ultimate power outputs.

Photoelectrochemical response of some layered chalcogenophosphate compounds /MPX3/

New photoelectrochemical results for the layered chalcogenophosphate compounds MPX3, FePS3, NiPS3, and SnPS3 are presented. The compounds were grown by iodine vapor transport in quartz ampules from a stoichiometric amount of the elements. Crystals of the layered type up to 10 mm x 10 mm x 0.1 mm were grown. The results of the layered compounds from the MPX3 series show good stability in acid solutions under photoelectrolysis condition. The relatively slow increase in the photocurrent with increasing electrode potential suggests high recombination rates for the photogenerated carriers in these layered materials. It is noted that improvements may be possible by, for example, optimizing the preparation of the crystals and the electrode surfaces.

Nafion(TM) Coats For Electrodes In Liquid-Feed Fuel Cells

Coating or impregnation with commercially available material enables oxidation of organic liquid fuels. Nafion(TM) investigated for use in application because of known combination of desirable characteristics: It is perfluorinated, hydrophilic, proton-conducting ion-exchange polymer exhibiting relatively high thermal and electrochemical stability and not detrimental to kinetics of electrochemical processes. Available in solubilized form and used to apply stable coats to surfaces of electrodes.

High efficiency thermionic converter studies

The objective is to improve thermionic converter performance by means of reduced interelectrode losses, greater emitter capabilities, and lower collector work functions until the converter performance level is suitable for out-of-core space reactors and radioisotope generators. Electrode screening experiments have identified several promising collector materials. Back emission work function measurements of a ZnO collector in a thermionic diode have given values less than 1.3 eV. Diode tests were conducted over the range of temperatures of interest for space power applications. Enhanced mode converter experiments have included triodes operated in both the surface ionization and plasmatron modes. Pulsed triodes were studied as a function of pulse length, pulse potential, inert gas fill pressure, cesium pressure, spacing, emitter temperature and collector temperature. Current amplifications (i.e., mean output current/mean grid current) of several hundred were observed up to output current densities of one amp/sq cm. These data correspond to an equivalent arc drop less than 0.1 eV.

Control system studies for thermionic reactors

In core thermionic reactor concepts are of interest for space missions that require electrical power in the range of a few tens of kilowatts up to several megawatts. The physical principle involved--thermionic direct conversion of heat to electricity at net efficiencies up to 15 percent--offers potential advantages when compared to other nuclear powerplant concepts. However, the integration of the thermionic diode electrode structure with high-temperature nuclear fuel materials presents new design problems and new reactor physical constraints. Among the topics that must be investigated are those associated with the control system. The results of analytical and simulation studies of thermionic reactor control performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory are discussed.

Cosmic dust detection with large surface piezoceramics

Piezoelectric transducers mounted on targets made out of metal plates or plastic foils have been used in many former space missions to detect impacting dust particles and to determine some of their parameters (e.g., momentum). The proposed detector is based on a large disc made out of piezoceramic material. Dust particles impacting on the detector will cause electrical charge pulses due to the piezoelectric nature of the target material. These charge pulses are measured on the electrodes of the disc and transformed with a charge sensitive amplifier (CSA) to voltage pulses. Counting the number of pulses leads to the dust-flux impacting on the detector. Additionally the amplitude and the rise time of the pulse slopes are determinated to evaluate the momentum and the size of the dust particles. Due to the high charge production rate per force unit of piezoceramics and momentum transfer without loss the sensivity of this acoustic sensor is very high. A method to derive size and momentum from the rising slope of an acoustic signal is described.

Advanced technology for extended endurance alkaline fuel cells

Advanced components have been developed for alkaline fuel cells with a view to the satisfaction of NASA Space Station design requirements for extended endurance. The components include a platinum-on-carbon catalyst anode, a potassium titanate-bonded electrolyte matrix, a lightweight graphite electrolyte reservoir plate, a gold-plated nickel-perforated foil electrode substrate, a polyphenylene sulfide cell edge frame material, and a nonmagnesium cooler concept. When incorporated into the alkaline fuel cell unit, these components are expected to yield regenerative operation in a low earth orbit Space Station with a design life greater than 5 years.

Asymmetric Dielectric Elastomer Composite Material

Embodiments of the invention provide a dielectric elastomer composite material comprising a plurality of elastomer-coated electrodes arranged in an assembly. Embodiments of the invention provide improved force output over prior DEs by producing thinner spacing between electrode surfaces. This is accomplished by coating electrodes directly with uncured elastomer in liquid form and then assembling a finished component (which may be termed an actuator) from coated electrode components.

Nickel-hydrogen battery self-discharge mechanism and methods for its inhibition

A review of our studies on the elucidation of the self-discharge mechanism of the Ni/H2 battery and methods to inhibit this phenomena is presented. The results show that (1) the rate of heat generation from nickel hydroxide powders and from electrodes increases with increase of hydrogen pressure, simultaneously, the open-circuit potential of the nickel hydroxide electrode is shifted in a negative direction more rapidly, indicating the transformation of NiOOH to Ni(OH)2; (2) heat generation rates measured in the microcalorimeter are considerably faster for electrolyte starved electrodes than for electrolyte-flooded electrodes; (3) there is a good correlation between the extent of self-discharge, as determined by heat generation in microcalorimetric measurement and capacity change; and (4) the self-discharge in Ni/H2 battery occurs via direct reduction of the active material by pressurized hydrogen. The addition of cadmium to the electrode reduces the self-discharge.

Apparatus for Screening Multiple Oxygen-Reduction Catalysts

An apparatus that includes an array of multiple electrodes has been invented as a means of simultaneously testing multiple materials for their utility as oxygen-reduction catalysts in fuel cells. The apparatus ensures comparability of test results by exposing all the catalyst-material specimens to the same electrolytic test solution at the same potential. Heretofore, it has been possible to test only one specimen at a time, using a precise rotating disk electrode that provides a controlled flux of solution to the surface of the specimen.

Thin film ferroelectric electro-optic memory

An electrically programmable, optically readable data or memory cell is configured from a thin film of ferroelectric material, such as PZT, sandwiched between a transparent top electrode and a bottom electrode. The output photoresponse, which may be a photocurrent or photo-emf, is a function of the product of the remanent polarization from a previously applied polarization voltage and the incident light intensity. The cell is useful for analog and digital data storage as well as opto-electric computing. The optical read operation is non-destructive of the remanent polarization. The cell provides a method for computing the product of stored data and incident optical data by applying an electrical signal to store data by polarizing the thin film ferroelectric material, and then applying an intensity modulated optical signal incident onto the thin film material to generate a photoresponse therein related to the product of the electrical and optical signals.

Screenable silver and base metal solar cell contacts

The metallurgical soundness of the all-metal screenable thick film electrode system is established for silver and copper electrodes. Silver fluoride was identified as a successful etchant material and is found most effective in the liquid phase (435-460 C). Best results were achieved with the eutectic alloys of dopants and semiconductors. The air-fired silver inks were strongly adherent, rugged, and solderable, whereas the hydrogen-fired silver inks had very poor adhesion. A two-step firing process was devised in which copper inks containing silver fluoride were activated in a nitrogen atmosphere, with sintering done at the same or higher temperatures in hydrogen. Good solar cells were made using the copper paste back contacts demonstrating that the electrodes are not the limiting factors in efficiency.
