The effect of thermal exposure on the mechanical properties of aluminum-graphite composites

To promote the development of aluminum-graphite composites with improved properties for aerospace applications, composite samples were fabricated by solid-state diffusion bonding of liquid-phase Al-infiltrated Thornel 50 fibers, and their mechanical properties were measured at room temperature in the as-received condition, after temperature exposure and after thermal cycling. The interface structure in aluminum-graphite composites and its effect on the composite properties, the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile properties of the composites, and the characteristics of failures of the composites in tension is discussed. The studied composites exhibited tensile properties corresponding well with those predicted by the rule of mixtures. Thermal cycling between 20 C and 500 C, as well as the formation of the Al4C3 at the Al-graphite interfaces at temperatures above 500 C resulted in degradation of the composite strength. Scanning electron microscopy of fractured surfaces indicated that the relatively weak interface governs the mode of failure in tension.

Nongray radiative interactions in entry region flows with variable properties

The entrance region flow between parallel plates is investigated numerically and the variation of fluid properties with temperature is considered. The effect of variable properties for both laminar and turbulent flows is presented. Laminar flows are found to be affected to a larger extent than turbulent flows, as far as the effect of variable properties are concerned.

Stratospheric aerosols and climatic change

Stratospht1ic sulfuric acid particles scatter and absorb sunlight and they scatter, absorb and emit terrestrial thermal radiation. These interactions play a role in the earth's radiation balance and therefore affect climate. The stratospheric aerosols are perturbed by volcanic injection of SO2 and ash, by aircraft injection of SO2, by rocket exhaust of Al2O3 and by tropospheric mixing of particles and pollutant SO2 and COS. In order to assess the effects of these perturbations on climate, the effects of the aerosols on the radiation balance must be understood and in order to understand the radiation effects the properties of the aerosols must be known. The discussion covers the aerosols' effect on the radiation balance. It is shown that the aerosol size distribution controls whether the aerosols will tend to warm or cool the earth's surface. Calculations of aerosol properties, including size distribution, for various perturbation sources are carried out on the basis of an aerosol model. Calculations are also presented of the climatic impact of perturbed aerosols due to volcanic eruptions and Space Shuttle flights.

Structural, transport and microwave properties of 123/sapphire films: Thickness effect

The effect of thickness and growth conditions on the structure and microwave properties has been investigated for the 123/sapphire films. It has been shown that in the conditions of epitaxial growth the Al atoms do not diffuse from substrate into the film and the films with thickness up to 100 nm exhibit the excellent direct current (DC) properties. The increase of thickness of GdBaCuO films causes the formation of extended line-mesh defects and the increase of the surface resistance (R(sub S)). The low value of surface resistance R(sub S)(75 GHz, 77K) = 20 mOhm has been obtained for the two layer YBaCuO/CdBaCuO/sapphire films.

Integrated Modeling Approach for the Terrestrial Planet Finder Mission

Because of the complexity of the Terrestrial Planet Finder (TPF) design concepts, the project will rely heavily on the use of engineering and science simulations to predict on-orbit performance. Furthermore, current understanding of these missions indicates that the 3m to 8m class optical systems need to be as stable as picometers in wavefront and sub-milli arcsec in pointing. These extremely small requirements impose on the models a level of predictive accuracy heretofore never achieved, especially in the area of microgravity effects, material property accuracy, thermal solution convergence, and all other second order modeling effects typically ignored. New modeling tools and analysis paradigms are developed which emphasize computational accuracy and fully integrated analytical simulations. The process is demonstrated on sample problems using the TPF Coronagraph design concept. The TPF project is also planning a suite of testbeds through which various aspects of the models and simulations will be verified.

Effects of tetraamine crosslinking agents on the thermomechanical properties of PMR polyimide composites

The effects were investigated of partial substitution of tetraamine crosslinking agents for diamine reactants on the thermomechanical properties of PMR polyimide resins and graphite fiber-reinforced composites. The effect of tetraamine content on isothermal weight loss, glass transition, and softening temperatures of neat resin samples is discussed. Composites were fabricated using PMR methodology. Monomeric solution of various stoichiometric ratios was used to impregnate Hercules HTS graphite fiber. The mechanical property retention characteristics of the composites at 316 C (600 F) are described.

The effects of small ice crystals on the infrared radiative properties of cirrus clouds

The effects of nonspherical small ice crystals on the IR radiative properties of cirrus clouds are investigated utilizing light scattering properties of spheroidal particles. Employing the anomalous diffraction theory for spheres and results from the exact spheroid scattering program, efficient parameterization equations are developed for calculations of the absorption and scattering properties for small ice crystals. Parameterization formulas are developed for large ice crystals employing results computed from the geometric ray-tracing method and the Fraunhofer diffraction theory for hexagonal crystals and spheroids.

Cloud-Type Mean Cloud Properties and Associated Cloud Radiative Effects in the Tropical “Chimney” Zones Using 20 Years High-Resolution CERES Satellite Data

It has been well known that convection tends to be more intense over land than over ocean and continental convection generally contains wider cores that are protected from entrainment than their oceanic counterparts. How does this difference in convective intensity impact the rest of cloud types and associated cloud radiative effects (CREs)? We select five regions in the tropical “chimney” zones, with two regions over land (Africa and Amazon) and three regions over ocean (eastern and western Pacific, and Atlantic) to understand the differences in the cloud-type mean cloud properties and associated CREs using 20-years high-resolution (2x2 km2) CERES satellite data. The cloud types are based upon the ISCCP classification using the joint cloud-top pressure and cloud optical depth distribution. These five regions are compared to the entire tropics (25°S to 25°N). First, we compare the frequencies of occurrence of cloud types among the regions. Compared to the entire tropics, the “chimney” zones are cloudier, particularly, for cloud types with moderate cloud optical depths in the middle and upper troposphere. Except for the eastern Pacific region, the low-level cloud types are less abundant over land (due to higher boundary layers) and ocean (due to weaker lower-tropospheric subsidence). Over Africa, upper-level clouds are scarcer, due perhaps to weak production of convective anvils related to the drier atmosphere. Second, liquid water path (LWP) and ice water path (IWP) are compared among the regions. Compared to the entire tropics, mean LWPs for moderate cloud optical depths are higher for oceanic regions but lower for Africa while they are slightly lower in the lower troposphere but slightly higher in the middle troposphere for Amazon. Not surprisingly, mean IWPs are higher over land than over ocean, which is directly related to the difference in convective intensity. That is, the explanations to this result are the relatively weak convective intensity over the eastern Pacific and the abundance of anvil clouds over the western Pacific. Both reduce the mean IWPs. The CRE results are still being analyzed because the totally-clear grids (1° x 1°) of the CERES data product should be removed before taking a regional mean of clear-sky fluxes, which cause the wrong signs of CREs for a few cloud types.

Effect of Sintering on Mechanical and Physical Properties of Plasma-Sprayed Thermal Barrier Coatings

The effect of sintering on mechanical and physical properties of free-standing plasma-sprayed ZrO2-8 wt% Y2O3 thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) was determined by annealing them at 1316 C in air. Mechanical and physical properties of the TBCs, including strength, modes I and II fracture toughness, elastic modulus, Poisson s response, density, microhardness, fractography, and phase stability, were determined at ambient temperature as a function of annealing time ranging from 0 to 500 h. All mechanical and physical properties, except for the amount of monoclinic phase, increased significantly in 5 to 100 h and then reached a plateau above 100 h. Annealing resulted in healing of microcracks and pores and in grain growth, accompanying densification of the TBC s body due to the sintering effect. However, an inevitable adverse effect also occurred such that the desired lower thermal conductivity and good expansivity, which makes the TBCs unique in thermal barrier applications, were degraded upon annealing. A model was proposed to assess and quantify all the property variables in response to annealing in a normalized scheme. Directionality of as-sprayed TBCs appeared to have an insignificant effect on their properties, as determined via fracture toughness, microhardness, and elastic modulus measurements.

Effect of halogenation on the nonlinear optical properties of porthyrin and substituted porphyrins

The effect that fluorine and chlorine substitution has on the nonlinear optical properties of porphyrin, tetramethylporphyrin and tetraphenylporphyrin has been theoretically studied. The calculations of nonlinear optical properties have been obtained by performing finite-field calculations on structures determined by semiempirical methods. In addition, tetra(p-chlorophenyl)porphyrin and tetra(p-bromophenyl)porphyrin were synthesized by the condensation of pyrrol and the appropriate aldehyde. Thin films of polymethylmethacrylate were obtained containing these materials, by spin coating onto glass substrates. The films were characterized by third-harmonic generation. It was determined that the experimental conditions enhance the third-order polarizability of the tetraphenylporphyrins by a factor of about 1.6.
