Design of a three-phase, 15-kilovolt-ampere static inverter for motor-starting a Brayton space power system

The design of a three-phase, 400-Hz, 15-kVA static inverter for motor-starting the 2- to 15-kWe Brayton electrical space power system is described. The inverter operates from a nominal 56-V dc source to provide a 28-V, rms, quasi-square-wave output. The inverter is capable of supplying a 200-A peak current. Integrated circuitry is used to generate the three-phase, 400-Hz reference signals. Performance data for a drive stage that improves switching speed and provides efficient operation over a range of output current and drive supply voltage are presented. A transformerless, transistor output stage is used.

Results of the Mariner 6 and 7 Mars occultation experiments

Final profiles of temperature, pressure, and electron density on Mars were obtained for the Mariner 6 and 7 entry and exit cases, and results are presented for both the lower atmosphere and ionosphere. The results of an analysis of the systematic and formal errors introduced at each stage of the data-reduction process are also included. At all four occulation points, the lapse rate of temperature was subdadiabatic up to altitudes in excess of 20 km. A pronounced temperature inversion was present above the surface at the Mariner 6 exit point. All four profiles exhibit a sharp, superadiabatic drop in temperature at high altitudes, with temperatures falling below the frost point of CO2. These results give a strong indication of frozen CO2 in the middle atmosphere of Mars.

Ion thruster thermal characteristics and performance.

Experimental and analytical studies of mercury-fed hollow cathode ion thrusters are presented. Pertinent thermal properties and plasma heating characteristics of the system have been determined through correlation and integration of temperature measurement data with a single stage Wiener-Kalman estimation technique. The resultant analytical network model is applied to predict the thermal performance of specified thruster systems under various operating conditions. The effects of solar intensity levels on the thruster thermal behavior, the dependency on the thruster dimension and multithruster design arrangements have been examined.

Lunar seismic profiling experiment

The Apollo 17 lunar seismic profiling experiment was conducted to record the vibrations of the lunar surface as induced by explosive charges, the thrust of the lunar module ascent engine, and the crash of the lunar module ascent stage. Analysis of the data obtained made it possible to determine the internal characteristics of the lunar crust to a depth of several kilometers. The test equipment used in the experiment is described. Maps showing the location of the geophones and the deployed explosive packages are provided. Samples of the seismic signals recorded by the lunar seismic profiling experiment geophones are included.

Petrographic and crystallographic study of silicate minerals in lunar rocks

Optical U-stage measurements, chemical microprobe data, and X-ray procession photographs of a bytownite twin group from rock 12032,44 are compared. Sharp but weak b and no c-reflections were observed for this An89 bytownite indicating a partly disordered structure. Euler angles, used to characterize the orientation of the optical indicatrix, compare better with values for plutonic than for volcanic plagioclase. This indicates that structural and optical properties cannot be directly correlated.

Seismic scattering and shallow structure of the moon in Oceanus Procellarum

Scattering in a high-Q medium has been the best hypothesis to date for explaining the observation of a long, reverberating train of waves in lunar seismographs. To test this hypothesis qualitatively, two experiments were devised which simulated this scattering and reproduced actual lunar seismographs. Pulses were propagated across a plate with grooves cut half-way through, and then were propagated along the edge of a plate with holes drilled within a skin depth of the edge. The seismographs of near impacts and moonquakes recorded by the Apollo 12 station in two frequency bands were studied. The impacts were those of S4B Saturn boosters and LM ascent stages. Interpretation of these data suggests the existence of a scattering layer 25 km thick with a Q of 5000. The density of the scatterers decreases with depth, suggesting that they are associated with cratering, or that they consist of cracks which anneal with depth.

An analysis of the rotor blade stresses of the three stage compressor of the Ames Research Center 11- by 11-foot transonic wind tunnel

The static and dynamic rotor blade stresses of the three stage compressor were measured. Data are presented in terms of total blade stress for the complete operational range of compressor speeds and tunnel total pressures. Modal frequencies and variations with tunnel conditions were measured. Phase angles and coherences between various gage combinations are also presented. Recommendations for improvements are given for future rotor blade experimental investigations.

The mineralogy of global magnetic anomalies

The Curie Balance was brought to operational stage and is producing data of a preliminary nature. Substantial problems experienced in the assembly and initial operation of the instrument were, for the most part, rectified, but certain problems still exist. Relationships between the geology and the gravity and MAGSAT anomalies of West Africa are reexamined in the context of a partial reconstruction of Gondwanaland.

Experimental measurements of hydrodynamic stiffness matrices for a centrifugal pump impeller

The objective of the Rotor Force Test Facility at the California Institute of Technology is to artificially orbit the center of rotation of an impeller enclosed within a volute over a range of frequencies from zero to synchronous and to measure the resulting forces on the impeller. Preliminary data from the first stage experiments in which the shaft is orbited at low frequency is reported. Steady volute forces along with stiffness matrices due to the change in position of the rotor center are measured. Static pressure taps around the volute are used to obtain volute pressure distributions for various fixed positions of the impeller center and for various flow rates. Static pressure forces are calculated from these pressure distributions allowing a more complete analysis of the components of the impeller forces. Comparison is made with various existing theoretical and experimental results.

Rodent CNS neuron development: Timing of cell birth and death

Data obtained from a staged series of single paired injections of tritiated thymidine to pregnant Wistar rats or C57B16/j mice on selected embryonic days and several postnatal times are reported. All injected specimens were allowed to come to term, each litter culled to six pups and specimens were sacrificed on PN28, with fixation and embedding for paraffin and plastic embedding. The results are derived from serial paraffin sections of PN28 animals exposed to autoradiographic processing and plotted with respect to heavily labelled cell nuclei present in the selected brain stem nuclei and sensory ganglia. Counts from each time sample/structure are totalled and the percentage of cells in the total labelled population/structure represented by each injection time interval plotted.

A model of electronic map interpretation

This paper describes an experiment that provides data for the development of a cognitive model of pilot flight navigation. The model views navigation as a process involving the alignment of mental images with the perceptual view out of the cockpit. The data support a three stage model: (1) the perceptual encoding of the map display, (2) mental rotation of the mental image, and (3) comparison of the image to the environment. The variables that significantly influence the processes embodied in the model in decreasing importance are: speed of processing, display sequencing, map complexity, and rotation angle of the map. The model can be used as a preliminary computational tool in predicting the navigational component of pilot situational awareness.

Joint-transform correlator systems using deformable-mirror spatial light modulators

Two joint-transform correlator systems based on deformable-mirror-device (DMD) spatial light modulators and CCD video cameras are described. The system designs provide for real-time correlation between video-formatted input scenes and stored reference images. The DMD light modulators are used exclusively for inputting data in the optical stages of these systems, and the CCD cameras are used to provide the critical square-law detection required in joint-transform achitectures. Experimental verification of the functionality of these DMD/CCD joint-transform systems is also presented.

A fast 3-D object recognition algorithm for the vision system of a special-purpose dexterous manipulator

A fast 3-D object recognition algorithm that can be used as a quick-look subsystem to the vision system for the Special-Purpose Dexterous Manipulator (SPDM) is described. Global features that can be easily computed from range data are used to characterize the images of a viewer-centered model of an object. This algorithm will speed up the processing by eliminating the low level processing whenever possible. It may identify the object, reject a set of bad data in the early stage, or create a better environment for a more powerful algorithm to carry the work further.

Perpendicular heating of electrons by upper hybrid waves generated by a ring distribution

Satellite observations of electron conical distributions with enhanced fluxes just outside the loss cone suggest that telectrons have been heated perpendicularly to the magnetic field in the mid-altitude polar magnetosphere. To understand electron conical distributions, plasma simulations are conducted to examine an upper hybrid wave instability of a ring electron distribution perpendicular to the magnetic field in a cold electron background. The simulations indicate that both the cold and ring distributions are heated perpendicularly during the saturation stage. From the plasma data, a ring distribution can be identified as a trapped distribution function with an enhancement near 90-deg pitch angle in the phase space density plot. It is suggested that the ring distribution might provide an additional free energy source for generating upper hybrid waves associated with electron conical events.
