DOE WPTO FY2021 Seedling End Report: Coupling Soil-Foundation Models to MHK Device Dynamic Models to Tighten the Design Envelope

The purpose of this Seedling project is to couple a marine renewable energy (MRE) dynamics simulation software with the soil-foundation models in the OC6 Phase II project [Bergua et al., 2021] and evaluate the software’s performance. This is a first step to accurately evaluating soil-foundation impacts on other types of MRE, like wave or current energy converters (WECs, CECs). OC6 Phase II compares offshore wind turbine (OWT) simulations using several different soil-foundation models to identify and fill key gaps in soil-foundation analyses. WEC-Sim was chosen to model the OC6 Phase II offshore wind turbine and various load cases because of its adaptability, accuracy of hydrodynamic loads, and ability to apply an arbitrary wind loading. Of the four methods used in OC6, the apparent fixity soil-foundation method was coupled with WEC-Sim. Technical challenges with flexible hydrodynamic bodies, added mass and external function libraries inhibited the ability to compare the WEC-Sim results to other OC6 participants. These challenges required that the WEC-Sim model of the OC6 OWT use a combination of rigid and flexible bodies to ensure a numerically stable solution. The rigid monopile creates a more stiff system and causes smaller amplitude motion under hydrodynamic loading and higher dominant frequency of motion under wind loading. These discrepancies are expected based on the increased stiffness of the WEC-Sim case.

A Proposed Geospatial Data Preservation Strategy for DOE's Office of Legacy Management

Identifying and planning preservation and curation activities associated with geospatial data will improve the ability of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management (LM) to support their core mission of protecting human health and the environment. This report documents the development LM's strategy for preserving and curating geospatial data within the context of LM's data-lifecycle-management framework. The strategy consists of preservation and curation elements, specific activities, and key enabling factors that ensure LM's geospatial data is maintained. Preservation elements enable the effective preservation of LM's geospatial data and recognizes that strategies need to be flexible to adapt to ongoing changes in scale, technology, and standards. Key enabling factors are intended to highlight critical data management responsibilities that must be addressed by LM to meet its preservation and curation objectives. A summary of best practices for geospatial data preservation is provided as part of the strategy.

Composite Analysis Vadose Zone Transport of Selected Radionuclides Released from DOE O 435.1 Sources.

The main objectives of the composite analysis (CA) compliance case vadose zone (VZ) facet are to simulate transport of radionuclide releases from the surface to the water table, and to provide radionuclide transfer rates to groundwater for inclusion into the Plateau-to-River (P2R) saturated zone (SZ) model (CP-57037, Model Package Report: Plateau to River Groundwater Model, Version 8.3). The parallel exascale version of the Subsurface Transport Over Multiple Phases (eSTOMP1) simulator is used to simulate flow and transport for the CA VZ models. The CA compliance case approach to address the scale and distribution of contaminant sources in the VZ facet is to subdivide the Hanford Site Central Plateau into 26 models that contain contaminant sources and liquid discharges likely to commingle during migration through the VZ to the water table.

Phase I DOE DE-SC0021823 Entitled “Changing the Design Rules of Rubber to Create Lighter Weight, More Fuel Efficient Tires” Final Technical Report 04/08/2022

Molecular Rebar Design, LLC has successfully developed new rubber composites with individualized carbon nanotubes called MOLECULAR REBAR® (MR), improving tire tread compound performance for use with electric vehicles (EVs). Through the iterative nature of the Phase I experimentation, MRD developed a novel carbon nanotube material that disperses well with other typical tire compound fillers and can be chemically functionalized for unique material property benefits. The new MR material is a chemically functionalized, discrete multi-wall carbon nanotube that binds into the rubber compound using silane technology. This Molecular Rebar based tire tread material drastically improves DIN abrasion resistance 25%+ (correlating to improved tire life), reduces tread weight by 6-7%, and reduces rolling resistance 20%+ (correlating to improved energy efficiency), as compared to an in-use, state-of-the-art, silica-silane tread compound. The formulations can be adjusted to maximize energy efficiency, to maximize wear or to have a blend of improvement depending on the tire performance needs of end use customers.

DOE Laboratory Support for DER and Inverter-Based Resource Integration Standards (ACCEL II) (Final Report)

This report documents efforts under a project that followed work completed under Accelerating Systems Integration Standards (ACCEL). In this continuation, the project team provided support for updates to critical standards for interconnection and interoperability of distributed energy resources at the distribution level. In addition, the project contributed to development of guidance for operational best practices of the bulk power system with high levels of DERs. Additional goals of the project were to inform and develop improved recommended practices and certification standards for end-to-end interoperability of DERs, utilizing Sandia laboratory assets when needed.

Mapping the Opportunity Space to Model the Circular Economy Using Tools Funded by the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

An increasing rate of material consumption and a growing population mean that the Earth's supply of natural resources is witnessing an unsustainable and unprecedented demand. This forces us to find solutions that ensure the availability of resources for sustenance of our society in the years to come. Actors from various backgrounds are addressing these challenges from their own perspectives: engineers are developing efficient manufacturing processes, designers are creating lightweight and durable products, educators are incorporating sustainable thinking in their curricula, policymakers are finding interdisciplinary solutions that benefit society at large, etc. Circular economy (CE) is one such approach to resource use that aims to move away from the linear material use framework of "take-make-waste" to a more circular and interdependent system where product, material and resource use is maximized to avoid unnecessary social, economic, and environmental costs. The purpose of this report is to explain how to approach evaluating the circular economy and to help researchers identify existing tools that can be used or that can serve as starting points for their research needs.
