Efficient Distance-based Global Sensitivity Analysis for Terrestrial Ecosystem Modeling

Sensitivity analysis in terrestrial ecosystem modeling is important for understanding controlling processes, guiding model development, and targeting new observations to reduce parameter and prediction uncertainty. Complex and computationally expensive terrestrial ecosystem models (TEM) limit the number of ensemble simulations, requiring sophisticated and efficient methods to analyze sensitivities of multiple model responses to different types of parameter uncertainties. In this study, we propose a distance-based global sensitivity analysis (DGSA) method. DGSA first classifies model response samples into a small set of discrete classes and then calculates the distance between parameter frequency distributions in different classes to measure the parameter sensitivity. The principle is that, if the parameter distribution is the same in each class, then the model response is insensitive to the parameter, while a large difference in the distributions indicates the parameter is influential to the response. Built on this idea, DGSA can be applied to analyze sensitivity of a single and a group of responses to different kinds of parameter uncertainties including continuous, discrete and even stochastic. Besides the main-effect sensitivity from a single parameter, DGSA can also quantify the sensitivity from parameter interactions. Additionally, DGSA is computationally efficient which can use a small number of model evaluations to obtain an accurate and statistically significant result. We applied DGSA to two TEMs, one having eight parameters and three kinds of model responses, and the other having 47 parameters and a long-period response. We demonstrated that DGSA can be used for sensitivity problems with multiple responses and high-dimensional parameters efficiently.

Cache management based on reuse distance

A cache of a processor includes a cache controller to implement a cache management policy for the insertion and replacement of cache lines of the cache. The cache management policy assigns replacement priority levels to each cache line of at least a subset of cache lines in a region of the cache based on a comparison of a number of accesses to a cache set having a way that stores a cache line since the cache line was last accessed to a reuse distance determined for the region of the cache, wherein the reuse distance represents an average number of accesses to a given cache set of the region between accesses to any given cache line of the cache set.

Ultra-Long Distance BOTDA Sensor System Employing Hybrid Amplification and Advanced Noise Reduction Techniques

Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) sensor systems play a pivotal role in distributed sensing, which enables precise measurements of strain and temperature across extensive fiber lengths. This research offers a comprehensive strategy to extend the sensing range of BOTDA systems beyond tens of kilometers while maintaining high spatial resolutions. Such enhanced sensing is realized through the integration of distributed Raman amplification, inline amplification using erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA), and advanced noise reduction techniques. Optimizing Raman pump and probe wave profiles ensures the robustness of Brillouin scattering signals, effectively countering attenuation-induced losses. Additionally, enhancing weak Brillouin signals by strategically placing EDFAs at optimal fiber locations keeps sensor sensitivity high. Leveraging inherent redundancy in measured data as a function of frequency and fiber distance, the non-local means (NLM) filter removes noise while preserving essential physical information. In summary, this research has shown a holistic exploration of extending BOTDA’s distance sensing capabilities up to 150 km with spatial resolutions of 8 meters.

Analysis of Line Distance Elements for Various Ibr Controllers and System Conditions

The large-scale penetration of inverter-based resources in power systems has challenged protection engineers because of the different fault behaviors these sources provide compared to conventional generation systems. The main challenges include a low level of fault current magnitude, unpredictable angles of sequence currents, and lack of inertia that can lead to maloperation of conventional phasor-based protection elements. This paper presents a sensitivity analysis of transmission line distance protection elements during phase-to-ground and phase-to-phase faults for different inverter controllers and power system conditions. It also summarizes which line protection elements remain secure near IBR terminations and identifies the ones affected by the inverter-based response. The paper concludes by highlighting that regulating negative-sequence current injection during the fault aids correct protection decisions, but does not address the entire challenge. Finally, alternative protection elements to those affected by the inverter fault response are discussed.

Development of the multi-purpose Cologne Compact Differential Plunger (CoCoDiff) for the measurement of nuclear level lifetimes with the Recoil Distance Doppler-shift method

Here, a new 3-foil plunger device, the Cologne Compact Differential (CoCoDiff) plunger has been built and commissioned. Due to its compact size, it can be used together with many different spectrometers and auxiliary detectors. As a commissioning experiment, level lifetimes of the $2^{+}_{1}$ and the $4^{+}_{1}$ excited states of 50 Cr have been measured, using the Differential Decay Curve method (DDCM). A derivation is given on how this method can be applied to a differential plunger measurement, in order to measure distances for lifetimes from two different regions of sensitivity at the same time. The commissioning experiment took place at the Cologne FN tandem accelerator, using the reaction 24 Mg( 32 S,4p2n) 50 Cr. Lifetimes, deduced from this measurement, agree well with literature values from earlier measurements.

New World Meteorological Organization Certified Megaflash Lightning Extremes for Flash Distance (709 km) and Duration (16.73 s) Recorded From Space

Identification and validation of atmospheric extremes are essential to monitoring climate change, to addressing engineering and safety concerns, and to promoting technological advancement. An international World Meteorological Organization evaluation committee has critically adjudicated and recommended acceptance of two lightning megaflash events (horizontal mesoscale lightning discharges of >100 km in length) as new global extremes using analysis of Geostationary Lightning Mapper data. The world's greatest extent for an individual lightning flash is a single flash that covered a horizontal distance of 709 ± 8 km (441 ± 5 mi) across parts of southern Brazil on 31 October 2018. Furthermore, the greatest duration for a single lightning flash is 16.730 ± 0.002 s from a flash that developed continuously over northern Argentina on 4 March 2019.

Differentiable Earth mover’s distance for data compression at the high-luminosity LHC

Abstract The Earth mover’s distance (EMD) is a useful metric for image recognition and classification, but its usual implementations are not differentiable or too slow to be used as a loss function for training other algorithms via gradient descent. In this paper, we train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to learn a differentiable, fast approximation of the EMD and demonstrate that it can be used as a substitute for computing-intensive EMD implementations. We apply this differentiable approximation in the training of an autoencoder-inspired neural network (encoder NN) for data compression at the high-luminosity LHC at CERN The goal of this encoder NN is to compress the data while preserving the information related to the distribution of energy deposits in particle detectors. We demonstrate that the performance of our encoder NN trained using the differentiable EMD CNN surpasses that of training with loss functions based on mean squared error.

Voyager 1 and 2 Observations of a Change in the Nature of Magnetic Fluctuations in the VLISM with Increasing Distance from the Heliopause

Voyager 2 (V2) crossed the heliopause at 119.0 au on 2018 day 309, after which it observed compressive (longitudinal) magnetic field fluctuations along the average magnetic field direction in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) at distances from 119.00 to 121.48 au and latitudes 32.°2 to 32.°4 S in heliographic inertial coordinates from 2018 day 309 to 2019 day 230. This result confirms the observations of longitudinal magnetic field fluctuations by Voyager 1 (V1) between 124.14 and 128.71 au at 34.°6N (∼2–7 au upwind of the heliopause) from 2013 day 133 to 2014 day 235. V1 crossed the heliopause at 121.58 au and 34.°5N on 2012 day 238. It came as a surprise to find it seemed that V1 observed transverse (Alfvénic) fluctuations of B between 131.40 and 135.98 au at latitude 34.°6–34.°7N (∼10–14 au upwind of the heliopause) from 2015 day 145 to 2016 day 248. The most recent V1 observations show the possible presence of transverse fluctuations of B in the VLISM from 141.44 to 146.01 au at 34.°7–34.°8N (∼20–24 au from the heliopause) between 2018 day 75 and 2019 day 178. Together, these observations show that longitudinal (compressive) magnetic field fluctuations are transmitted through the heliopause from the heliosheath into the VLISM, and are then converted into transverse (Alfvénic) fluctuations at ∼130 au (∼8 au from the heliopause) that are observed out at 146 au (∼24 au from the heliopause).

Relative size perception at a distance is best at eye level

Relative size judgments were collected for two objects at 30.5 m and 23.8 from the observer in order to assess how performance depends on the relationship between the size of the objects and the eye level of the observer. In three experiments in an indoor hallway and in one experiment outdoors, accuracy was higher for objects in the neighborhood of eye level. We consider these results in the light of two hypotheses. One proposes that observers localize the horizon as a reference for judging relative size, and the other proposes that observers perceive the general neighborhood of the horizon and then employ a height-in-visual-field heuristic. The finding that relative size judgments are best around the horizon implies that information that is independent of distance perception is used in perceiving size.

Prediction-Based Approaches for Generation of Noise-Power-Distance Data with Application to Urban Air Mobility Vehicles

In contrast to most commercial air traffic today, vehicles serving the urban air mobility (UAM) market are anticipated to operate within communities and be close to the public at large. The approved model for assessing environmental impact of air traffic actions in the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Aviation Environmental Design Tool (AEDT), does not directly support analysis of such operations due to a combined lack of UAM aircraft flight performance model data and aircraft noise data. This paper addresses the latter by offering two prediction-based approaches for generation of noise-power-distance (NPD) data for use within AEDT. One utilizes AEDT’s fixed-wing aircraft modeling approach and the other utilizes the rotary-wing aircraft modeling approach.
