Thermodielectric radiometer

Radiometer measures microsecond pulses of radiant flux in the presence of electromagnetic noise. It consists of a charged capacitor that delivers a voltage pulse proportional to the thermally induced depolarization of its polymeric dielectric.

Remote atmospheric probing by ground to ground line of sight optical methods

The optical effects arising from refractive-index variations in the clear air are qualitatively described, and the possibilities are discussed of using those effects for remotely sensing the physical properties of the atmosphere. The effects include scintillations, path length fluctuations, spreading of a laser beam, deflection of the beam, and depolarization. The physical properties that may be measured include the average temperature along the path, the vertical temperature gradient, and the distribution along the path of the strength of turbulence and the transverse wind velocity. Line-of-sight laser beam methods are clearly effective in measuring the average properties, but less effective in measuring distributions along the path. Fundamental limitations to the resolution are pointed out and experiments are recommended to investigate the practicality of the methods.

Conceptual design study of a six-man solid electrolyte system for oxygen reclamation

A six-man solid electrolyte oxygen regeneration system (SEORS) that will produce 12.5 lbs/day of oxygen has been designed. The SEORS will simultaneously electrolyze both carbon dioxide and water vapor and be suitable for coupling with a carbon dioxide concentration system of either molecular sieve, solid amine or hydrogen depolarized electrochemical type. The total system will occupy approximately 19 cu ft (34.5 in. x .26 in. x 36 in. high) and will weigh approximately 500 pounds. It is estimated that the total electrical power required will be 1783 watts. The system consists of three major components; electrolyzer, hydrogen diffuser, and carbon deposition reactor. There are 108 electrolysis stacks of 12 cells each in the electrolyzer. Only 2/3 of the 108 stacks will be operated at a time; the remainder will be held in reserve. The design calls for 96 palladium membranes for hydrogen removal to give 60 percent redundancy. Four carbon deposition reactors are employed. The iron catalyst tube in each reactor weighs 7.1 lb and 100 percent redundancy is allowed.

Raman scattering studies of pollutant systems.

Results and techniques for laboratory measurements of Raman scattering cross sections and depolarization ratios of atmospheric gases as a function of the incident photon energy are discussed. Referred to N2, the cross section of H2O changes by a factor of 2 as the incident photon energy is changed by 5%. Less striking results are obtained for SO2, NO and other atmospheric gases. Tentative results are given for spectral features of scattering from polluted air-water interfaces. Raman lidar is assessed as a potentially useful aid in remote sensing of atmospheric and water-borne pollution distributions at least in near-source concentrations.

Lunar reflectivity at 0.86-centimeter wavelength.

Measurement of backscattering of 0.86-cm circularly polarized radiation by 29 regions on the moon. Both circular polarizations were received. At a given angle of incidence, power received in the 'expected' polarization was greater for the highland regions than for the seas by roughly 1 dB. For moderately large angles of incidence phi, this return diminishes more rapidly than cosine phi, although perhaps not as rapidly as it does at longer wavelengths. The cross section of the whole moon is 5 plus or minus 2% of the geometric cross section; about 80% of the cross section is ascribable to diffuse scattering. The polarization ratio for the echoes varies smoothly with the angle of incidence, from 0.7 at the subradar point to 0.4 at 70 deg. The depolarization is the same for marial and highland regions, and at large angles of incidence it is the same as has been found at 23 and 68 cm by other workers.

Atmosphere revitalization in the space station prototype.

The atmosphere revitalization group (ARG) for the space station prototype (SSP) environmental/thermal control and life support system (ETC/LSS) has been designed to meet a comprehensive set of requirements and constraints for a flight type mission. Design definition is for a modular vehicle temperature and humidity control subsystem, contaminant control equipment, a hydrogen depolarized cell CO2 concentrator, a water electrolysis oxygen generation subsystem, CO2 reduction equipment, and a pressure and composition control subsystem. Performance requirements are for support of a crew of six. Realistic leakage rates and metabolic activity cycles, cabin temperature selectability, and controlled cabin relative humidities are specified for the design. Operational aspects of the subsystem are discussed with emphasis given to the influence of a 180-day, maintainable requirement on system design. Consideration of flight vehicle type packaging, in flight maintenance, data management systems interface and fault detection capability, and electrical supply constraints is covered.

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

A program for the measurement and analysis of the depolarization and differential attenuation that occur when millimeter wave signals propagate through rain is described. Initial data are taken along a 1.43 km path at 17.65 GHz and a supporting theoretical model is developed to relate the propagation effects to rainfall rate and wind velocity. A block diagram of the overall experiment is included. It consists of: (1) an RF system (millimeter wave transmitter and receiver), (2) transmitting and receiving antennas, (3) a weather system with rain gauges, wind sensors, and drop counters, and (4) a digital control, processing, and data storage system.

Cost analysis of carbon dioxide concentrators

A methodology is developed to predict the relevant contributions of the more intangible cost elements encountered in the development of flight-qualified hardware and is used to predict the costs of three carbon dioxide concentration systems. The cost and performance data from Gemini, Skylab, and other programs are utilized as a basis for establishing the cost estimating relationships. The concentration systems analyzed are the molecular sieves C02 concentrator, the hydrogen-depolarized concentrator, and the regenerable solid desiccant concentrator. Besides the cost estimates for each system, their comparative criteria including relative characteristics, operational differences, and development status are considered.

Bidirectional reflectance of zinc oxide

This investigation was undertaken to determine original and useful information about the bidirection reflectance of zinc oxide. The bidirectional reflectance will be studied for the spectra between .25-2.5 microns and the hemisphere above the specimen. The following factors will be considered: (1) surface conditions; (2) specimen preparation; (3) specimen substrate, (4) polarization; (5) depolarization; (6) wavelength; and (7) angles of incident and reflection. The bidirectional reflectance will be checked by experimentally determined angular hemispherical measurements or hemispherical measurements will be used to obtain absolute bidirectional reflectance.

Net-field polarization in a magnetically biased plasma.

Systematic treatment of the net-field polarization of a plane wave propagating in a magnetically biased cold plasma. Polarization transformations under quasi-longitudinal conditions are examined. The wide variety of polarization transformations available suggests the usefulness of slabs of magnetically biased plasma to synthesize microwave polarizers and depolarizers.

Electrochemical carbon dioxide concentrator: Math model

A steady state computer simulation model of an Electrochemical Depolarized Carbon Dioxide Concentrator (EDC) has been developed. The mathematical model combines EDC heat and mass balance equations with empirical correlations derived from experimental data to describe EDC performance as a function of the operating parameters involved. The model is capable of accurately predicting performance over EDC operating ranges. Model simulation results agree with the experimental data obtained over the prediction range.

The influence of polarization on millimeter wave propagation through rain

The measurement and analysis of the depolarization and attenuation that occur when millimeter wave radio signals propagate through rain are described. Progress was made in three major areas: the processing of recorded 1972 data, acquisition and processing of a large amount of 1973 data, and the development of a new theoretical model to predict rain cross polarization and attenuation. Each of these topics is described in detail along with radio frequency system design for cross polarization measurements.
