Medium-scale to large-scale implementation of cyber-physical human experiments in live traffic

Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) such as cars and trucks are being developed and tested as Cyber-Physical Human systems while the technology improves. Before these systems can achieve full autonomy, some serve as tools in the form of adaptive cruise control. The CIRCLES Consortium investigates the potential for AVs to increase fuel efficiency of highway traffic by smoothing “stop-and-go” traffic waves that result from normal human driving behavior in congestion. We have performed an experiment to evaluate the real world effects of implementing this strategy. A medium-scale experiment was performed on I-24 near Nashville, TN in August 2021. This was a precursor to a larger experiment that will take place November 2022. We examine how the human part of the experiment will change as we scale up from an 11 vehicle test (four AVs) to 100 AVs. There are many solutions to problems of the medium-scale experiment that would be inconvenient, complicate the experience, or not be practicable. The medium-scale experiment involved 11 cars of which four had a custom control algorithm installed to be engaged by the driver. The large-scale experiment will have 100 cars, all with custom control algorithm installed to act on traffic when the controller is engaged. We examine key choices made for the medium experiment, and how some will be different for the large experiment. Our experience performing the medium-scale experiment has made it clear that repeating our methods from this smaller one are inefficient or impossible if used for the large-scale experiment and will be improved.

Resilient Design of Continuous-time Distributed Optimization Algorithm in the Presence of Cyber-attacks

This paper presents a continuous-time resilient distributed optimization algorithm based on competitive interaction design method on connected graphs in the presence of adversaries. Here, the competitive interaction method allows us to design a network that protects the multi-agent systems from adversaries without requiring high network connectivity. In addition, the proposed algorithm does not require the global information about the number of adversaries. First, we show that the proposed distributed algorithm solves the resilient distributed optimization problem with no attack on the communication links. Second, we show that the proposed continuous-time distributed optimization algorithm on connected graphs converges to the small neighborhood of the optimal solution in the presence of cyber-attacks onto the communication channel. Simulations are presented to illustrate our theoretical results.

Man‐in‐the‐middle attacks and defence in a power system cyber‐physical testbed

Abstract Man‐in‐The‐Middle (MiTM) attacks present numerous threats to a smart grid. In a MiTM attack, an intruder embeds itself within a conversation between two devices to either eavesdrop or impersonate one of the devices, making it appear to be a normal exchange of information. Thus, the intruder can perform false data injection (FDI) and false command injection (FCI) attacks that can compromise power system operations, such as state estimation, economic dispatch, and automatic generation control (AGC). Very few researchers have focused on MiTM methods that are difficult to detect within a smart grid. To address this, we are designing and implementing multi‐stage MiTM intrusions in an emulation‐based cyber‐physical power system testbed against a large‐scale synthetic grid model to demonstrate how such attacks can cause physical contingencies such as misguided operation and false measurements. MiTM intrusions create FCI, FDI, and replay attacks in this synthetic power grid. This work enables stakeholders to defend against these stealthy attacks, and we present detection mechanisms that are developed using multiple alerts from intrusion detection systems and network monitoring tools. Our contribution will enable other smart grid security researchers and industry to develop further detection mechanisms for inconspicuous MiTM attacks.

PRIME: a real-time cyber-physical systems testbed: from wide-area monitoring, protection, and control prototyping to operator training and beyond

As the power grid continues to evolve with advanced wide-area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC) algorithms, there is an increasing need for realistic testbed environments with industry-grade software and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) to perform verification and validation studies. Such testbed environments serve as ideal platforms to perform WAMPAC prototyping, operator training, and also to study the impacts of different types of cyberattack scenarios on the operation of the grid. In this paper, we introduce PRIME (PNNL cybeR physIcal systeMs tEstbed): the testbed that integrates real-time transmission system simulator with commercial industry grade energy management system (EMS) software and remote hardware-in-the-loop (RHIL). PRIME is an end-to-end, modular testbed that allows high-fidelity RHIL experimentation of a power system. We present two detailed case studies (fault location and clearing in transmission system, and operator training) to showcase the capabilities of our PRIME testbed. Finally, we briefly discuss some of the potential limitations of our testbed in terms of scalability and flexibility to setup larger test systems and identify directions for future work to address those limitations.

Hybrid Data-Driven Physics-Based Model Framework Implementation: Towards a Secure Cyber-Physical Operation of the Smart Grid

False data injection cyber-attack detection models on smart grid operation have been much explored recently, considering analytical physics-based and data-driven solutions. Recently, a hybrid data-driven physics-based model framework for monitoring the smart grid is developed. However, the framework has not been implemented in real-time environment yet. In this paper, the framework of the hybrid model is developed within a real-time simulation environment. OPAL-RT real-time simulator is used to enable Hardware-in-the-Loop testing of the framework. IEEE 9-bus system is considered as a testing grid for gaining insight. The process of building the framework and the challenges faced during development are presented. The performance of the framework is investigated under various false data injection attacks.

A Proactive Stochastic Framework for Cyber-Physical Power Systems Security

This paper presents a framework for cyberphysical power systems security in which defensive action is proactive, striving to mitigate the harm from strategic cyber attacks before they occur. The prospect is formulated in a previously-studied context of state estimation via the Kalman filter under false data injection attacks. Assuming a cognitive attacker who is both advanced and persistent, the proactive defense rests upon stochastically influencing the sensors, Phasor Measurement Units, such that subsequent falsification attacks are countered. Examples are crafted to illustrate both the efficacy of the proactive approach in ideal situations and the practical challenges implied by non-ideal situations.

Federated Learning for Efficient Condition Monitoring and Anomaly Detection in Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems

Detecting and localizing anomalies in cyber-physical systems (CPS) has become increasingly challenging as systems grow in complexity, particularly due to varying sensor reliability and node failures in distributed environments. While federated learning (FL) offers a foundation for distributed model training, existing approaches lack mechanisms to handle these CPS-specific challenges. This paper presents an enhanced FL framework that introduces three key innovations: adaptive model aggregation based on sensor reliability, dynamic node selection for resource optimization, and Weibull-based checkpointing for fault tolerance. Our framework enables reliable condition monitoring while addressing the computational and reliability challenges of industrial CPS deployments. Experiments on NASA Bearing and Hydraulic System Datasets demonstrate superior performance over state-of-the-art FL methods, achieving 99.5% AUC-ROC in anomaly detection and maintaining accuracy under node failures. Statistical validation using Mann-Whitney (U) test confirms significant improvements (p < 0.05) in both detection accuracy and computational efficiency across diverse operational scenarios.1

Impact of Open Communication Networks on Load Frequency Control with Plug-In Electric Vehicles by Cyber-Physical Dynamic Co-Simulation

With the increasing electrification of the transportation sector to achieve the carbon neutrality objective, despite the challenges of charging electric vehicles (EV), there are also opportunities through smart charging EVs to improve system frequency stability; however, EV control technologies might require nontraditional communication support. This paper investigates the impacts of communication variations of EV on power system load frequency control through a cyber-physical dynamic system (CPDS) co-simulation. Here, the CPDS is built upon our previously developed transmission-and-distribution dynamic co-simulation model with the added communication variation functions (i.e., delay and packet loss). The case studies consider multiple communication variation scenarios when the system experiences an N-1 generation trip contingency. The scenarios include communication delays and packet loss using both homogeneous and heterogeneous assumptions. The outcomes of this work can help improve EV frequency regulation services and provide robust and effective tests for different load frequency control algorithms of the future power systems.

Scalable Distributed Reachability Analysis for Cyber-Physical Networked Microgrids with Communication Latency

Due to the high penetration of power-electronic-interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs), a microgrid's inertia is significantly reduced, making it sensitive to cyberand physical operational changes. When multiple microgrids are interconnected to form networked microgrids for improving system's resilience, the changes of one microgrid can quickly escalate to the overall system. In cyber-physical networked microgrids, the communication latency varies a lot. To efficiently quantify the impact of the communication latency on the dynamics of networked microgrids, a scalable distributed reachability analysis approach is presented in this paper. Reachable sets are calculated for each microgrid and then composited for the overall system dynamics evaluation. Extensive tests in the full paper will demonstrate the influence of communication latency on system dynamics and validate reachable sets can bound a system's all dynamic trajectories subject to latency changes. The test results also offer an insight into designing and managing the communication network for enhancing the system's resilience.

User-Focused Tools to Enhance IT/OT Cyber Resilience within the Power Grid

The power grid is undergoing several changes that are increasing its complexity as nexuses between electric-gas, transmission-distribution, and energy-communications continue to become increasingly critical. This system is heavily dependent on communication infrastructure and controls, and it relies on humans in operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) roles to manage the increasing breadth, depth, and speed of data. Many technical challenges have presented themselves and will need to be addressed to provide reliable grid operations. With increased reliance on distributed controls and communication infrastructure, cybersecurity becomes an inherent requirement. When considering current cyber-physical security solutions for the power grid, one can notice a clear divide between information technology and operation technology networks. However, in real-life applications, these networks are interdependent. This work presents results of interviews with key utility cybersecurity personnel, analyzes the results, and makes recommendations towards solution of existing technical and operational challenges realized. Existing workflows are presented, wireframe interviews are discussed, and tool requirements are described. The existence of easy-to-implement solutions, based on existing energy management systems, highlight the potential for real-life applications.

Cyber Framework for Steering and Measurements Collection Over Instrument-Computing Ecosystems

We propose a framework to develop cyber solutions to support the remote steering of science instruments and measurements collection over instrument-computing ecosystems. It is based on provisioning separate data and control connections at the network level, and developing software modules consisting of Python wrappers for instrument commands and Pyro server-client codes that make them available across the ecosystem network. We demonstrate automated measurement transfers and remote steering operations in a microscopy use case for materials research over an ecosystem of Nion microscopes and computing platforms connected over site networks. The proposed framework is currently under further refinement and being adopted to science workflows with automated remote experiments steering for autonomous chemistry laboratories and smart energy grid simulations.

Cyber-Attack Identification of Synchrophasor Data Via VMD and Multifusion SVM

A large amount of synchrophasor data in the wide area measurement system (WAMS) needs to be collected and transmitted to the phasor data concentrator, thereby increasing the possibility of being attacked by hackers. The attacked data are therefore hidden into the normal synchrophasor data so that the synchrophasor data based application will be affected. To remedy this problem, an identification framework is proposed to detect the data cyber-attack in WAMS utilizing variational mode decomposition (VMD) and multifusion support vector machine (MSVM). First, VMD is used to transform the attacked data into multiple modal components. Thereafter, a novel MSVM is employed to classify the deterministic features using the proposed linear combined multikernel (LCM). Further, this LCM can fuse multiple types of features, including the time, frequency, and statistical domains of the synchrophasor data. Utilizing the actual data from FNET/GridEye, different experiments are conducted under multiple attack strengths and types. The results demonstrate that the identification framework has higher precision and robustness compared with other conventional classifiers.

Smart Mobility in the Cloud: Enabling Real-Time Situational Awareness and Cyber-Physical Control Through a Digital Twin for Traffic

This article presents the design, implementation, and use cases of the Chattanooga Digital Twin (CTwin) towards the vision for next-generation smart city applications for urban mobility management. CTwin is an end-to-end web-based platform that incorporates various aspects of the decision-making process for optimizing urban transportation systems in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to reduce traffic congestion, incidents, and vehicle fuel consumption. The platform serves as a cyberinfrastructure to collect and integrate multi-domain urban mobility data from various online repositories and Internet of Things (IoT) sensors, covering multiple urban aspects (e.g., traffic, natural hazards, weather, and safety) that are relevant to urban mobility management. The platform enables advanced capabilities for: (a) real-time situational awareness on traffic and infrastructure conditions on highways and urban roads, (b) cyber-physical control for optimizing traffic signal timing, and (c) interactive visual analytics on big urban mobility data and various metrics for traffic prediction and transportation performance evaluation. The platform is designed using a multi-level componentization paradigm and is implemented using modular and adaptive architecture, rendering it as a generalizable and extendable prototype for other urban management applications. We present several use cases to demonstrate CTwin's core capabilities for supporting decision-making in smart urban mobility management.

Stealthy Cyber Anomaly Detection On Large Noisy Multi-material 3D Printer Datasets Using Probabilistic Models

As Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) becomes pervasive in industry, its applications in safety critical component manufacturing are being explored and adopted. However, ALM's reliance on embedded computing renders it vulnerable to tampering through cyber-attacks. Sensor instrumentation of ALM devices allows for rigorous process and security monitoring, but also results in a massive volume of noisy data for each run. As such, in-situ, near-real-time anomaly detection is very challenging. The ideal algorithm for this context is simple, computationally efficient, minimizes false positives, and is accurate enough to resolve small deviations. In this paper, we present a probabilistic-model-based approach to address this challenge. To test our approach, we analyze current measurements from a polymer composite 3D printer during emulated tampering attacks. Our results show that our approach can consistently and efficiently locate small changes in the presence of substantial operational noise.
