Characteristics of locational uncertainty marginal price for correlated uncertainties of variable renewable generation and demands

With the rapid increase of variable renewable energy sources in power systems, how to manage and price the uncertainty of renewable resources’ power outputs is becoming an urgent issue. Current market designs considering the uncertainties are mainly based on the probabilistic scenario set of demand and renewable energy resources power outputs. This consideration makes market designs vulnerable to three significant challenges when put into practice. First, the accurate probability distribution of renewable generation is hard to obtain in real-time. Second, it is challenging to clear the market timely with many scenarios to guarantee accuracy. Third, generation cost recovery cannot be guaranteed for some scenarios. To overcome these challenges, this paper proposes a locational uncertainty marginal price model to price the uncertainty explicitly based on a scenario-free stochastic market-clearing model. Instead of using the probabilistic scenario set, the uncertainty of renewable energy sources and loads is modeled with distributionally-robust chance constraints. The correlation of uncertainties can be endogenously modeled in both the market-clearing and the locational uncertainty marginal price formation. Furthermore, this paper proves that generation cost recovery, revenue adequacy, and partial market equilibrium can be achieved using the locational uncertainty marginal price model. Numerical results from both the small and large systems simulations validate that the generation cost recovery is maintained no matter the generation participates in uncertainty mitigation or not. The transmission congestion surplus is also allocated appropriately among loads, renewable energy sources, and financial transmission right owners.

Robust trajectory-constrained frequency control for microgrids considering model linearization error

Grid supportive modes integrated within inverter-based resources can improve the frequency response of renewable-rich microgrids. The synthesis of grid supportive modes to guarantee frequency trajectory constraints under a predefined disturbance set is challenging but essential. To tackle this challenge, a numerical optimal control (NOC)-based control synthesis methodology is proposed. Without loss of generality, a wind-diesel fed microgrid is studied, where we aim to design grid supportive functions in the wind turbine. In the control design, linearized models are used, and the linearization-induced errors are quantitatively analyzed by reachability and interval arithmetics and represented in the form of interval uncertainties. Then, the NOC problem can be formulated into a robust mixed-integer linear program. The control structure is strategically configured into two levels to realize online deployment. The proposed control is verified on the modified 33-node microgrid with a full-order three-phase nonlinear model in Simulink. In conclusion, the simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control paradigm and the necessity of considering linearization-induced uncertainty.

The microstructure of a selective laser melting (SLM)-fabricated NiTi shape memory alloy with superior tensile property and shape memory recoverability

A selective laser melting (SLM)-fabricated NiTi with superior tensile property and shape memory recoverability was obtained by using a unique stripe rotation scanning strategy. Here, the alloy characteristics, formation mechanisms and evolution in terms of twins, dislocations and precipitations of the alloy were systematically studied. Compared to the conventional smelting-followed-by-machining, the SLM fabrication process involves rapid solidification and repeated heating, which confer distinctive characteristics to the microstructures of SLM-fabricated NiTi alloys. Rapid solidification promotes the formation of a supersaturation solid solution matrix containing a high concentration vacancies, which in turn aggregate to generate a high density of dislocations. During subsequent repeated heating stages, these dislocations occur thermal motion along three directions of <001 > , <111> and <110 >, leading to the formation of thermal kinks, helical dislocations and wave morphology. Simultaneously, precipitated particles Ti 3 Ni 4 repeatedly nucleate and heterogeneous grow with the movement of dislocation. Such precipitation behavior, termed repeated precipitation, has not been previously reported in the conventional NiTi alloys, suggesting that it could be a unique characteristic of such alloy. After martensitic transformation, only two twins, {1 1¯ 1} type I twin and compound twin, are detected. The twinning lamellae of these two twins, where precipitation and dislocation pile-ups exist, often have uneven thickness and chaotic arrangement. Besides, the unique self-accommodated microstructures, such as secondary {1 1¯ 1} type I twin and compound twin with “herring-bone’’ lamellae, which often appear in the deformed or nanocrystalline NiTi, can also be observed. These unique microstructures may confer the distinctive properties to the SLM-fabricated NiTi.

A self-healing liquid metal anode with PEO-Based polymer electrolytes for rechargeable lithium batteries

In this study, a Ga-Sn liquid metal alloy material is demonstrated as a self-healing anode system due to its fluidity via operando synchrotron-based transmission X-ray microscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments. Cracks formed due to volume expansions can be recovered by the fluidity of the liquid metals. By incorporating with a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based electrolyte at 60°C, the Ga-Sn anode shows a reversible lithium insertion and extraction process with a high initial discharge specific capacity of 682 mAh g -1 , followed by delivering a capacity of 462 mAh g -1 in the second cycle at C/20 rate. Furthermore, compared with its solid counterparts, the Ga-Sn liquid metal anode demonstrates a better capability to maintain its mechanical integrity and better contact with PEO solid electrolytes due to its advantageous features of the liquid. This study suggests a potential strategy to use liquid metal alloys with polymer solid electrolyte to solve the anode challenges in rechargeable lithium batteries.

Visual Brick model authoring tool for building metadata standardization

In this study, the Brick ontology is a unified semantic metadata standard for building assets and their relationships, serving as a key enabler for effective interoperability and automation of building systems and analytics. However, creating a Brick model, in other words, standard semantic metadata based on the Brick ontology for a building dataset, can be a complex task. This paper presents two case studies of the creation of Brick models for real-world residential and commercial building datasets, highlighting the challenges during the Brick model creation process. Additionally, the paper introduces VizBrick, an interactive authoring tool for creating semantic building metadata. VizBrick facilitates the creation of Brick models by providing an intuitive visual interface and interactive capabilities, such as keyword search, automatic mapping suggestions, and recommendations. The use of VizBrick is shown to significantly reduce the time and effort required during the Brick model creation process.

A combination of deep eutectic solvent and ethanol pretreatment for synergistic delignification and enhanced enzymatic hydrolysis for biorefinary process

Here, a novel pretreatment system containing deep eutectic solvents and ethanol (DES-E) for synergistic carbohydrate conversion and delignification was reported in this study. The DES-E pretreatment resulted in an enhanced glucose yield compared to individual DES and ethanol pretreatment for the three tested biomass, including Broussonetia papyrifera, corn stover and pine. To further explore the delignification mechanism, the solubilized lignin and residual lignin from Broussonetia papyrifera was recovered and extracted, then thoroughly characterized. The highest total OH content was found in the DES-E solubilized lignin, which could be used as antioxidant. The presence of ethanol in pretreatment liquor could protect the β-O-4 substructure from breakage and reduce lignin condensation, which favors the subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. Comparable glucose yield and delignification performance was achieved by recycled DES. DES-E pretreatment offers a promising method for lignin isolation and cellulose digestibility improvement simultaneously.
