Crystal structure, magnetism, and specific heat of lightly depleted layered honeycomb oxides, Na$_2$(Ni$_{2-x}$D$_x$)TeO$_6$ ($D$ = Mg, Ga, Co; 0.10 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.25)

Layered oxides, in which transition metal atoms form a honeycomb lattice, are known for complex magnetic phase diagrams. In this work we study the doped compounds, Na$_2$(Ni$_{2-x}$D$_x$)TeO$_6$, $D$ = Mg, Ga, and Co (0.10 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.25), to understand how chemical dilution at the nickel site influences the stability of magnetic exchanges within the honeycomb layer of the parent, Na$_2$ Ni$_2$ TeO$_6$. Here, the studied compounds were found to crystallize in $P6_3/mcm$ space group common to P2 type layered oxides. In general, the lattice parameters and the unit cell volume expanded with increased doping. The oxidation states determined from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were consistent with bond valence sum estimates, that confirmed the presence of Ni$^{2+}$, Mg$^{2+}$, Ga$^{3+}$, Co$^{2+}$ in our samples. Irrespective of magnetic or non-magnetic doping, the magnetic phase transition temperature ($T_N$) of the doped compounds were reduced from that of Na$_2$ Ni$_2$ TeO$_6$ or Na$_2$ Co$_2$ TeO$_6$, and lay between 21.7 K and 26.8 K. The effective paramagnetic moments extracted from Curie–Weiss analysis were in the range 3.17 μ B to 3.84 μ B and the Weiss temperatures were between $-15$ K and $-25$ K, suggesting antiferromagnetism. Mg- and Ga-doped compounds showed free spin formation, indicated by Curie–Weiss tails in their magnetic susceptibility. Our results suggest emergence of short-range magnetic correlations in Na$_2$(Ni$_{2-x}$D$_x$)TeO$_6$, enhanced due to the depletion of the Ni honeycomb lattice.

Chemical Preparation, Crystal Structure Reinvestigation and Vibrational Study of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O and X-ray Characterization of the New Anhydrous Triphosphate CoNa 3 P 3 O 10

The triphosphate dodecahydrate of cobalt and sodium CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O was prepared by the ion exchange resin process. Its structure was studied by X-ray diffraction and determined in the monoclinic space group P12 1 /c1 with the unit-cell parameters a = 14.6650(5) Å, b=9.1916(3) Å, c = 15.0239(5) Å,β =90.2210(10)°, Z = 4 and V = 2025.13(12) Å 3 . The thermal dehydration of this compound was performed, leading to an anhydrous new form, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 , which was characterized by X-ray diffraction. The obtained CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 crystallized in monoclinic space group P21/n with the unit-cell parameters a=15,3774 Å, b=7,6988 A°, c=14,2832A°, β=92,9115°. The characteristic IR wavenumbers of the P 3 O 10 5- ions observed in the vibrational spectra were calculated using isotopic substitutions, which confirms the existence of these groups in the studied compound. A comparison between the IR and Raman wavenumbers of CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O, CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 and Na 5 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 was performed. A kinetic study was also made for CoNa 3 P 3 O 10 ·12H 2 O.

Symmetry-driven persistent spin texture for the two-dimensional nonsymmorphic CdTe and ZnTe crystal structures

In this paper, two nonsymmorphic two-dimensional structures of CdTe and ZnTe are modeled, and using state-of-the-art density functional theory with the group theory of solids, their symmetry-enforced electronic properties are studied. The in-plane ferroelectricity coupled with strong spin-orbit coupling induces a unidirectional out-of-plane Rashba spin-orbit field that can host a momentum-independent uniform spin configuration known as persistent spin texture (PST) at the Brillouin zone center. PST in these structures is found to be robust against external perturbations such as strain, structural distortion, and independent of layer thickness. These unprecedented intrinsic spin transport properties hold utmost importance in spintronics, as the experimental stringent condition of equal Rashba and Dresselhaus constants [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 146801 (2003)] is eliminated. The calculated persistent spin helix wavelength of <~5 nm paves the way for developing next-generation nanosized nonballistic spin field-effect transistors compared with micrometer-sized GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. Further, these materials exhibit finite spin Hall conductivity at the band edges and hence can be used in ferromagnet-free spin Hall transistors. Although CdTe and ZnTe systems have been widely studied for photocatalysis and solar cell applications over the past few decades, their potential application in spintronic devices has not been explored. Mono/few layers of CdTe and ZnTe synthesized from (110) facets of bulk zinc-blende crystals [Nat. Commun. 3, 1057 (2012)] satisfy all symmetry operations of the nonsymmorphic space group and hence can be considered ideal materials to verify our theoretical results experimentally.

Formation Mechanisms, Crystal Structure, and Interfacial Reactivity of (Mixed) Metal Sulfide Nanoparticles Produced via Biological versus Abiotic Systems

The primary goals of this project were to understand the formation mechanisms and reactivity of mix-metal sulfide nanophases (Cu-Fe, Ni-Fe, Co-Fe sulfides) produced via biological and abiotic pathways that are relevant to low-temperature aqueous environments. These mix-metal sulfide nanophases have been identified in a range of natural and anthropogenic systems and are considered to play key roles in the biogeochemical cycling of elements, biomineralization, environmental remediation, resource recovery, eco-toxicity, and the origin and evolution of life. Using a comparative approach, we aimed to elucidate: (i) if these mix-metal sulfides tend to form nanoscale phases regardless of their formation pathways; (ii) what mechanisms are involved in the biological and abiotic crystallization processes; (iii) what phases form that have been otherwise expected; and (iv) if we can combine the experimental results with what we see and surmise from field studies to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding regarding the origin and biogeochemical roles of these mix-metal sulfides. Along a related pathway of electron transfer in nano-systems, in this case dealing with Fe-oxides instead of Fe-sulfides, we have continued to explore the reactions and solid products of heterogeneous catalytic oxidation of aqueous Mn(II) by dissolved oxygen in the presence of iron oxides (hematite) nanoparticles. The nano-Mn-oxides produced are known to be efficient sorbents of transition metal elements, including Cu, Ni, and Co studied in our sulfide work.

Valence State Partitioning of V between Pyroxene and Melt for Martian Melt Compositions Y 980459 and QUE 94201: The Effect of Pyroxene Composition and Crystal Structure

A spiked (with REE, V, Sc) martian basalt Y980459 composition was used to synthesize olivine, spinel, and pyroxene at 1200 C at 5 oxygen fugacities: IW-1, IW, IW+1, IW+2, and QFM. The high spike levels for REE were used for two specific reasons. First, we wanted to be able to analyze REE by both electron microprobe and ion probe. Second, we wanted the most important "Others" components, (i.e., those outside the pyroxene quadrilateral such as Al, Cr3+, Fe3+, REE3+, V3+, V4+, etc.) to be REE3+Mg (Si,Al)2O6. At the doped levels we used, the most important "Others" component is REE3+ in the M2 site coupled with Al in the tetrahedral site. The goal of this paper is to explain the significant increase in the value of D(sub V)(sup pyroxene/melt) with increased Wo content of the pyroxene. We compare augite (Wo approx. 33), pigeonite (Wo approx. 13) and orthopyroxene (Wo approx 3.8). We also show olivine for comparison. The crystal chemical factors which account for this remarkable increase of DV with Wo are twofold. First, with Ca in the M2 site (as in diopside, CaMgSi2O6) the site is large and 8-coordinated while Mg in the M2 site (as in enstatite, Mg2Si2O6) the site is smaller and 6- coordinated. Second, tetrahedral Al in the pyroxene chains provides charge balance and makes the M2 site larger and more compliant for the introduction of REE.

The first crystal structure of a xylobiose-bound xylobiohydrolase with high functional specificity from the bacterial glycoside hydrolase family 30, subfamily 10

Xylobiose is a prebiotic sugar that has applications in functional foods. This report describes the first X-ray crystallographic structure models of apo and xylobiose-bound forms of a xylobiohydrolase (XBH) from Acetivibrio clariflavus. This xylan-active enzyme, a member of the recently described glycoside hydrolase family 30 (GH30), subfamily 10, phylogenetic clade has been shown to strictly release xylobiose as its primary hydrolysis product. Inspection of the apo structure reveals a glycone region X-2-binding slot. When X-2 binds, the non-reducing xylose in the -2 subsite is highly coordinated with numerous hydrogen bond contacts while contacts in the -1 subsite mostly reflect interactions typical for GH30 and enzymes in clan A of the carbohydrate-active enzymes database (CAZy). This structure provides an explanation for the high functional specificity of this new bacterial GH30 XBH subfamily.

Crystal Structure of an i‐Motif from the HRAS Oncogene Promoter

Abstract An i‐motif is a non‐canonical DNA structure implicated in gene regulation and linked to cancers. The C‐rich strand of the HRAS oncogene, 5′‐CG CCC GTG CCC TGCG CCC GCAA CCC GA‐3′ (herein referred to as iHRAS), forms an i‐motif in vitro but its exact structure was unknown. HRAS is a member of the RAS proto‐oncogene family. About 19 % of US cancer patients carry mutations in RAS genes. We solved the structure of iHRAS at 1.77 Å resolution. The structure reveals that iHRAS folds into a double hairpin. The two double hairpins associate in an antiparallel fashion, forming an i‐motif dimer capped by two loops on each end and linked by a connecting region. Six C−C + base pairs form each i‐motif core, and the core regions are extended by a G−G base pair and a cytosine stacking. Extensive canonical and non‐canonical base pairing and stacking stabilizes the connecting region and loops. The iHRAS structure is the first atomic resolution structure of an i‐motif from a human oncogene. This structure sheds light on i‐motifs folding and function in the cell.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Physical Properties of BaSnS 2

Phase-pure BaSnS 2 , with space group P2 1 /c, is synthesized, and the structural and physical properties are investigated. We report thermal properties and optical measurements are reported for the first time. The Debye temperature and Sommerfeld coefficient are obtained from temperature-dependent heat capacity measurements, the latter indicating that BaSnS 2 is an electrical insulator. A direct bandgap of 2.4 eV is obtained from diffuse reflectance and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The findings herein lay the foundation for understanding the physical properties of this material and are part of a continuing effort to investigate previously unexplored ternary chalcogenides.
